Description
The present invention relates to a multi-material, multi-part metal wood golf club head.
The shape of golf clubs has changed significantly from the wood wood clubs of the bushes to today's extremely large head size metal wood. This change is made possible only by high-strength metal materials. The increase in the inertia of the club head and the coefficient of restitution makes it possible to fly the golf ball farther and straighter.
In particular, titanium alloys are light (specific gravity is 4.5 to 5.0), and this development can significantly increase the head size, resulting in an increase in the actual shaft length of the golf club. Specifically, a large moment of inertia can be realized using a large club head, and the area for realizing a high speed in the club surface is increased by the large moment of inertia. For this reason, a club head of a larger size is always required. However, increasing the club head increases the weight at the same time. Most shell thicknesses of metal wood clubs manufactured today are thin enough to meet manufacturing limits. As a result, materials having a specific gravity smaller than that of titanium have been studied. Golf club manufacturers are seeking solutions that can employ lighter and stronger materials. In some cases, there is a need for a material that partially replaces titanium. This is relatively expensive and requires considerable work for forming and casting.
More important in club head design are loft, lie, face angle, horizontal face bulge, vertical face roll, center of gravity, inertia, material selection, and overall head weight. This basic set of criteria is generally a key part of golf club technology, but several other aspects should also be considered. Depending on the internal design of the club head, specific performance characteristics can be achieved, for example, by enclosing a hosel or shaft, or by employing a weight member.
The United States Golf Association (USGA), an organization that has established rules for golf in the United States, defines specifications for the performance of golf clubs and golf balls. Golf clubs are limited to a coefficient of restitution of 0.83. One rule of the USGA is that the initial velocity of a golf ball after a predetermined impact is 250 feet / second + -2% (or the maximum initial velocity is 255 feet / second). In order to increase the flight distance of the golf ball, it is necessary to maximize the ball speed after impact and the coefficient of restitution of the ball / club impact while observing the above rules.
The present invention has been made in consideration of the above-described circumstances, and an object thereof is to improve the characteristics of a golf club by selecting materials and structures of a plurality of parts.
The present invention relates to a multi-material, multi-part metal wood golf club head, wherein the center of gravity is at least 6 mm below the geometric face center of the front face, and the maximum coefficient of restitution (COR) is less than 2 mm below the geometric center. I try not to be down.
One embodiment is shown as a club head and includes a first body portion, a first body portion, and a hosel member. The first body portion includes a face portion on the cup, a sole portion, and a through hosel tube. The second body portion includes at least a crown portion and most of a skirt portion (also referred to as a peripheral portion), and the density thereof is smaller than that of the first body portion. The density of the second body portion can be from about 0.1 g / cc to about 4.0 g / cc.
The material constituting the first body portion may be a stainless steel alloy, but is preferably a titanium alloy. Magnesium is preferred for the second body portion, but the composite or other lightweight metal, such as aluminum, or a thermoplastic material may be substituted for magnesium. However, each performance characteristic is different. The third body portion is a hosel portion, which is a lightweight metal or thermoplastic material, such as nylon, composite, or aluminum material.
The club head of the present invention has a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than 0.80, and a COR gradient is generated on the front face. The thickness of the face is preferably gradually increased along the direction from the crown portion to the sole portion. This is advantageous in design because the center of gravity of the club head is at the bottom, and if the face thickness of the sole portion is increased, the COR moves toward the center of the face.
By adopting a low specific gravity material for the second main body portion and the hosel member to reduce the weight, the weight can be rearranged in the club head. In the present invention, a horseshoe-shaped weight member is generally disposed on the inner surface of the sole portion at a position close to the connecting portion of the sole / skirt portion. This lowers the center of gravity of the club head and is farther from the face, preferably at least 12 mm from the shaft axis centerline.
Another embodiment of the invention utilizes at least two body portions, and the lightweight second portion integrally includes a crown portion and a hosel member.
According to the present invention, by selecting materials and structures of a plurality of parts, for example, the COR maximum point can be brought close to the geometric face center while moving the center of gravity downward, and the characteristics of the golf club can be improved.
The golf club according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention is a multi-material, multi-part hollow club head.
As shown in FIGS. 3 to 8, the

The material constituting the first body portion may be stainless steel, pure titanium, or a titanium alloy. A more preferable material is a titanium alloy, for example, a titanium 6-4 alloy or an SP-700 titanium alloy. The former contains 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium and is commercially available from NKK (Japan), the latter is 4.7% aluminum and 2.9% vanadium, 2.0% molybdenum and 2.1% % Iron and is commercially available from RTI International Metas (Niles, Ohio). The
By adopting magnesium for the second main body portion, a certain amount of weight can be rearranged on the
Three embodiments of the club head design of the present invention have been tested with a conventional club. The conventional club is a Titleist ™ 983K driver and is very similar in appearance, size, and shape to the embodiment of the present invention. ing. The three embodiments are the same in all respects except for the constituent materials of the

Titelist(商標)983K(チタン製のクラウンおよびスカート部を有する)のテスト結果によれば、983Kの重心はその幾何学フェース中心より2.29mm上であった。 According to the embodiment A of the present invention, the center of gravity C is moved to a position at least 6 mm below the geometric face center X. Actual test results indicate that the center of gravity C is 7.88 mm below the geometric face center X. According to the test results of Titleist ™ 983K (with titanium crown and skirt), the center of gravity of 983K was 2.29 mm above the geometric face center. In the test data of Examples B and C, an equivalent shift of the center of gravity C can be seen.
The titlist ™ 983K has a capacity of 363 cc, and a striking face is manufactured by stamping with titanium SP700, and its thickness is about 0.122 inch. Unlike the present invention, 983K has a
図14および図15は、従来のTitelist(商標)983Kおよび実施例A(マグネシウム製の第2の本体部分32)の打ち出し角度を示すデータをそれぞれ表す。 FIG. 14 and FIG. 15 represent data indicating the launch angle of the conventional Titleist ™ 983K and Example A (magnesium second body portion 32), respectively. Due to the low center of gravity C of Example A, the launch angle in Example A is 1.5 ° higher than the conventional 983K (13 ° vs. 11.5 °).
FIG. 16 shows the spin rate characteristics of a conventional 983K club head, and FIG. 17 shows the magnesium crown of Example A. At the geometric head center of the club head (indicated by 0.00 in the XY coordinates) this invention results in a backspin that is almost 500 rpm lower than the conventional 983K.
The significant improvement in ball speed over the conventional 983K of this invention is shown in FIGS. The maximum ball speed of the conventional club head is achieved at a point about 0.20 inches above the geometric face center (FIG. 18), whereas the magnesium crown club head of the present invention has a maximum ball speed of almost geometric. Realized at or below the academic centre. This position of maximum speed is the position where the coefficient of restitution is maximum, and golfers often refer to them as “sweet spots”.
The final test results (total flight distance) are shown in FIGS. Data is taken at the geometric center in both club heads. FIG. 21 shows that the total flight distance is increased by 7.5 yards from the conventional example by the club head of the present invention.
These figures show the initial velocity when a club moving at about 110 mph hits a Titleist ™ PRO V1 ball. The striking angle is about 2 ° and the effective loft angle is about 12 °. The club is attached to a robot and driven to hit the ball at the desired club speed. Robots are either True Temper Corporation or Wilson ™ Sporting Goods Co. Commercially available. Ball impact positions were distributed over a rectangular area of 0.5 inches vertically and 1.0 inches horizontally. The driver mechanism can repeatedly hit the ball at any desired position on the hitting face. The ball speed was measured with a launch monitor. Any suitable launch monitor can be used. Examples of the launch monitor include those described in US Pat. Nos. 6,533,674, 6,650,0073, 6,488,591, 6,285,445, 6,241,622, 5,803,823, 5,471,383, and the like.
Preferably, the
An alternative example of the
USGA Procedure for measuring the Velocity Ration of a Club Head for Conformance to Rule 4−1e,Appendix II, Revision 1(1998年8月4日)およびRevision 0(1998年7月6日)に示され、これはUSGAから入手可能である。 Standard USGA conditions for measuring coefficient of restitution are USGA Procedure for measuring the Velocity Relation of a Club Head for Conformance to Rule 4-1e, Appendix II, Revision 1 (August 1998 1998) July 6), which is available from the USGA. Such a test measures the COR from the resiliency of the ball. COR is the ratio of the rebound velocity to the incident velocity. In this model, COR was determined using the following equation:
(Vclub−post−Vball−post)/(Vclub−pre−Vball−pre)
Vclub−post
Vball−post
Vball−pre
(V club-post -V ball-post ) / (V club-pre -V ball-pre )
However,
V club-post is the speed of the club after the collision V ball-post is the speed of the ball after the collision V club-pre is the speed of the club before the collision (this value is zero under USGA COR conditions)
V ball-pre is the velocity of the ball before the collision
COR generally depends on the shape and material properties of the impactor. In perfect elastic collision, the COR is 1.0, indicating no energy loss. On the other hand, in a completely inelastic body, i.e., a completely plastic collision, the COR is 0.0, meaning that the collision bodies do not leave after a collision, resulting in maximum energy loss. As a result, if the value of COR is large, it means that the ball speed and the flight distance are large.
The
The alternative embodiment shown in FIGS. 9-12 and referenced by the
