有機EL素子における陽極としては、仕事関数の大きい(4eV以上)金属、合金、電気伝導性化合物及びこれらの混合物を電極物質とするものが好ましく用いられる。このような電極物質の具体例としてはAu等の金属、CuI、インジウムチンオキシド(ITO)、SnO2、ZnO等の導電性透明材料が挙げられる。また、IDIXO(In2O3−ZnO)等非晶質で透明導電膜を作製可能な材料を用いてもよい。陽極は、これらの電極物質を蒸着やスパッタリング等の方法により、薄膜を形成させ、フォトリソグラフィー法で所望の形状のパターンを形成してもよく、あるいはパターン精度をあまり必要としない場合は(100μm以上程度)、上記電極物質の蒸着やスパッタリング時に所望の形状のマスクを介してパターンを形成してもよい。この陽極より発光を取り出す場合には、透過率を10%より大きくすることが望ましく、また、陽極としてのシート抵抗は数百Ω/□以下が好ましい。さらに膜厚は材料にもよるが、通常10〜1000nm、好ましくは10〜200nmの範囲で選ばれる。
B)下記一般式(3)で表される部分構造を有する化合物またはその互変異性体を含有することを特徴とする有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子。
C)前記Mで表される金属が、イリジウム、白金またはオスミウムであることを特徴とする前記A又はBに記載の有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子。
《有機EL素子の作製》
陽極として、ガラス上にITO(インジウムチンオキシド)を厚さ150nmで成膜した基板(NHテクノグラス社製:NA−45)にパターニングを行った後、このITO透明電極を設けた透明支持基板を、i−プロピルアルコールで超音波洗浄し、乾燥窒素ガスで乾燥し、UVオゾン洗浄を5分間行った。
以上のようにして作製した各有機EL素子を、温度23度の乾燥窒素ガス雰囲気下で10V直流電圧印加による連続点灯を行い、点灯開始時の発光輝度(L)(cd/m2)、外部取り出し量子効率(η)及び輝度が半減するまでの時間(半減寿命:τ)を測定した。また、点灯開始時の色度を測定し、CIE色度図上での色名を評価した。なお、上記各測定において、発光輝度は、有機EL素子OLED1−1を100とした時の相対値で表し、外部取り出し量子効率(η)は有機EL素子OLED1−1を100とした時の相対値で表し、輝度の半減する時間(半減寿命:τ)は、有機EL素子OLED1−1の輝度が半減する時間を100とした相対値で表した。
《多色表示装置の作製》
(青色発光素子の作製)
ガラス基板上にITOを膜厚200nmで蒸着して陽極(シート抵抗30Ω/□)を形成した。この陽極上にシャドーマスクをかけ、化合物1を膜厚60nmに真空蒸着して正孔輸送層とした。その上にTCTAと例示化合物2−2(TCTA:2−2=93:7)を共蒸着して、膜厚40nmの青色発光層とした。更に、化合物2を蒸着して膜厚30nmとし、正孔阻止層の役割も兼ねた電子輸送層を設けた。その上に、さらに、Alq3を膜厚20nmに真空蒸着し電子輸送層とした。これを青色発光素子とした。
次に、シャドーマスクを横にずらし、陽極上に化合物1を膜厚30nmに真空蒸着して正孔輸送層とした。その上にTCTAと例示化合物2−20(TCTA:2−20=93:7)を共蒸着して、膜厚20nmの緑色発光層とした。更に、化合物2を蒸着して膜厚30nmとし、正孔阻止層の役割も兼ねた電子輸送層を設けた。その上に、さらに、Alq3を膜厚20nmに真空蒸着し電子輸送層とした。これを緑色発光素子とした。
更に、シャドーマスクを横にずらし、陽極上に化合物1を膜厚40nmに真空蒸着して正孔輸送層とした。その上にTCTAと例示化合物5−2(TCTA:5−2=93:7)を共蒸着して、膜厚30nmの赤色発光層とした。更に、化合物2を蒸着して膜厚30nmとし、正孔阻止層の役割も兼ねた電子輸送層を設けた。その上に、さらに、Alq3を膜厚30nmに真空蒸着し電子輸送層とした。これを赤色発光素子とした。
以下のようにして、図3に記載の層構成の多色表示装置を作製した。

- 発光層が、前記一般式(5)で表される部分構造を有する化合物またはその互変異性体を含有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子。
- 請求項1または2に記載の有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子を有することを特徴とする表示装置。
