このような高速応答の液晶は例えば強誘電液晶、反強誘電液晶、OCB(Optically Compensated Bend)液晶などが挙げられる。
このような高速応答の液晶は例えば強誘電液晶、反強誘電液晶、OCB(Optically Compensated Bend)液晶などが挙げられる。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a display device using a spatial light modulator (SLM) or a light valve that is driven at a very high speed, and performs color display in a time-division and color-sequential manner.Color sequential color display device using color wheel unitIt is about.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Large screen displays such as home theaters and presentations have attracted attention in recent years. Recently, liquid crystal panels (LCOS: Liquid Crystal On Silicon) and DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) in which switching elements and reflective electrodes are made on a silicon substrate are attracting attention. A projector that obtains a large-screen display image by using a small reflective light valve and enlarging and projecting a display image with a projection lens or the like has been commercialized.
[0003]
DMD is one type of SLM, and is mainly used as a projection display. The DMD has hundreds of thousands or one million or more extremely small mirrors on one chip, and each mirror corresponds to one pixel. The on / off state is controlled by tilting the mirror and changing the emission angle of the light beam incident on the mirror. To that end, each mirror is attached to one or more hinges attached to a support post and is separated by an air gap onto the underlying control circuit. This control circuit applies an electrostatic force that selectively tilts each mirror. For display applications, the image data is loaded into the DMD memory cell and the mirror is either selected to reflect light in the on direction or tilt away from the on direction.
[0004]
There are mainly a single-plate type and a three-plate type when classified by the number of SLMs required for the projector. As an example of a three-plate projector, there is a method in which each color light subjected to color separation is modulated by a corresponding SLM, and then color-combined and simultaneously projected onto a screen. This is because three SLMs are used in parallel, each for red (R), green (G) and blue (B). In comparison, a single-plate projector uses only one SLM, and the R, G, and B lights are modulated in sequence by a single-plate DMD, either in time series or spatially in regions or pixel units. The 3-plate projectorInThe need for three SLMs triples the hardware requirements associated with that SLM compared to a single-panel projector. This applies to all color display displays using the SLM, regardless of the projector.
[0005]
As an example of the single-plate projector, there is a color sequential method using color mixture by time division. With color sequential, each pixel has red, green, and blue values, and during each frame, the pixels in that frame are addressed sequentially with red, blue, and then green data. Is done. On the other hand, when these same color filters are configured in a disc and a color wheel with at least three different color regions is synchronized to this data, so that the data for each color is displayed by the SLM, the SLM The light incident on the light is band-controlled by the color wheel. As described above, color display is possible by time division, and if the time division rate becomes faster than the standard display speed of 60 images per second, the eyes perceive the image as having an original color.
[0006]
In such a time-division color sequential type color display device, the color wheel is preferably arranged at a position where the light beam is most condensed. This is because the SLM needs to be turned off to prevent color mixing while the color wheel rotates and the light flux spot passes through the boundary of different color filters. The shorter the off time, the higher the time aperture ratio and the brighter display possible That's why. Therefore, in order to reduce the size of the color wheel, it is preferable that the light beam spot on the color filter is small. Otherwise, a color wheel having a large outer diameter is required, and the overall size of the system becomes very large.
[0007]
FIG. 18 shows an example of a conventional color sequential color display apparatus using a color wheel. As described above, since the color wheel can be brighter when it is arranged at a position where the light beam is most condensed, a method of arranging the color wheel immediately after the emission of the lamp as shown in FIG. 18 is general. Specifically, the concave mirror shape of the lamp is changed to an elliptical shape, and the lamp position is adjusted so that the light beam emitted from the lamp is condensed at the focal position. The system configuration is such that the color wheel is arranged so that the filter of the color wheel comes to this focal position. However, in such a configuration, the color wheel receives radiant heat due to its proximity to the lamp and becomes high temperature. Furthermore, the color filter of the color wheel is very hot because the light is condensed.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
On the other hand, since the thin glass filter rotates at a very high speed, the color wheel is desirably housed in a case for safety. Furthermore, since the color filter of the color wheel is made of a glass plate, even if it is broken, the risk of scattering is reduced if it is in the case. However, when the color wheel is placed in the case, the color wheel case itself rises in temperature due to radiation heat from the lamp, absorption of unnecessary light, etc., and it becomes difficult to cool the color wheel and the motor. In that case, a decrease in reliability due to temperature rise of the color wheel and the motor becomes a problem.
[0009]
Further, since the color wheel is preferably arranged at a position where the light beam is most condensed, it is placed in the immediate vicinity of the lamp box. Therefore, the temperature rises due to the radiant heat of the lamp. Furthermore, since the light is focused on a small spot on the color wheel, it becomes extremely hot locally. As described above, the color wheel is easily affected by heat, and the temperature immediately rises to 70 ° C. or higher.
[0010]
Further, as described above, since the color wheel rotates the color filter made of glass at a high speed, the color wheel is easily charged with static electricity due to friction with air. When the color filter is charged, dust in the air is adsorbed, the transmittance of the filter is lowered, and the light output of the set is lowered. Even when the color wheel is placed in the case, wind pressure is generated by the rotation of the color wheel, and air flows in and out frequently through the gaps in the case. In particular, when it is put in a case, it is necessary to provide an opening for entering and exiting light, and the entrance and exit of air from this opening causes dust to be trapped.
[0011]
Further, since the color wheel rotates at a high speed, a wind noise is generated when the thin glass filter scrapes off the air, which becomes a large noise generation source together with the electromagnetic noise of the motor. In particular, when it is put in a case, an air flow is generated by the wind pressure generated by the rotation of the color wheel from the opening provided for light entering and exiting, and the air entering and exiting from the opening causes noise.
[0012]
The present invention has been made in view of the above-mentioned problems, and particularly when the color wheel is sealed in a container in order to reduce danger and noise, the flow of air is cut off and thus the generated heat is reduced. An object of the present invention is to provide a color wheel unit and a color sequential color display device using the same, which can solve the problem that the temperature rises markedly in the container.
[0013]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve this object, the present inventionA color wheel divided into a plurality of color regions and a motor for rotating the color wheel are housed in a color wheel case, and a color wheel unit having a heat radiating fin portion on the outer surface is provided, and the color wheel is condensed with a lamp. A color sequential color display device disposed between a lens and a cooling unit filled with a cooling liquid between the lamp and the condenser lens, and the color wheel unit disposed within the cooling unit. It is characterized by.

[0022]
Since the color wheel for sequentially switching colors rotates at a very high speed as described above, there is a high possibility that a safety problem will occur if the color wheel is exposed in the color sequential display device. Further, since the color filter is made of glass, there is a risk that the glass will be broken into pieces and scattered in the apparatus if it should break. Further, when the glass rotates at high speed, static electricity is generated due to friction with air, and the glass is charged. At that time, dust in the atmosphere is adsorbed, and the filter is gradually soiled, resulting in a decrease in transmittance and a decrease in display luminance.

In the present invention, such a problem is solved by accommodating the color wheel in the color

In the example shown in FIG.161 is the color wheel unit shown in FIG. 1, 162 is an LCOS, 163 is a lamp, 164 is a projection lens, and 165 is a screen. LCOS 162 is one of the SLMs,siliconIt has matrix-like reflective pixels formed on a substrate, and display can be switched at a high speed by a video signal. In order to display a video rate moving image, it is necessary to be able to display 60 frames of video in one field. For this purpose, the response speed of the liquid crystal is required to be at least 1/60 = 16.7 milliseconds or less. Preferably, a response speed of 5.6 msec is required in order to display RGB three colors during this period. Examples of such a fast response liquid crystal include a ferroelectric liquid crystal, an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, and an OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) liquid crystal. In the present invention, a ferroelectric liquid crystal is used to realize a high-speed response on the order of microseconds. However, on-off binary display is required, and pulse width modulation is required for gradation display.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the color sequential color display device using the color wheel unit of the present invention, the color wheel divided into a plurality of color regions and the motor for rotating the color wheel are accommodated in the color wheel case. A color sequential color display device comprising a color wheel unit provided with a heat radiating fin portion on an outer surface, and the color wheel disposed between a lamp and a condenser lens, wherein the color wheel is disposed between the lamp and the condenser lens. The cooling unit filled with the cooling liquid is arranged, and the color wheel unit is arranged in the cooling unit, and the color wheel unit is directly cooled by air or water to realize further cooling and sound insulation effect. is there. Also,Even if the color wheel and the motor rotate at high speed, safety is ensured, and the risk of the filter glass scattering even if it is broken is reduced. On the other hand, it is possible to effectively cool the color wheel case that easily rises in temperature due to radiation heat from the lamp, absorption of unnecessary light, etc., and to improve the reliability of the color wheel and the motor.
[0066]
In addition, in the event of a failure such as damage to the color wheel, abnormal rotation speed of the motor, abnormal noise, etc., maintenance can be easily performed by simply removing and replacing the color wheel unit.
[0067]
Furthermore, when the color wheel is rotated at a high speed, the color filter made of glass is charged by friction with air and adsorbs dust in the air, the filter transmittance decreases, and the light output of the display device decreases. The problem is also solved.
[0068]
In addition, since the color wheel rotates at high speed, noise sources such as wind noise generated when a thin glass filter scrapes air and electromagnetic noise of a motor can be blocked. In particular, when a color wheel and a motor are placed in a case as in the present invention, wind pressure is generated by the rotation of the color wheel, and air flows in and out frequently through a gap in the case or an opening for entering and exiting light. For this reason, a noise insulation effect can be expected with respect to noise due to the entry and exit of air from the opening by the cushioning material provided at the joint between the case and the motor and the transparent member provided at the light entrance / exit opening.
[0069]
In addition, vibrations caused by unbalanced rotation of the color wheel and motor are also absorbed by the shock absorbing material provided at the joint between the case and the motor and the shock absorbing material provided at the fixing part for fixing the color wheel unit body to the chassis. I can expect.
