【従来の技術】
月桃（ゲットウ）は、ショウガ科（Gingiberaceae Alpinia)のハナミョウガ属（Alpinia)に属し、鹿児島県佐多岬を北限とし、沖縄、小笠原、台湾、東南アジアに自生する多年生植物で、熱帯・亜熱帯の生産性の高いバイオマスである。従来、その葉体は独特の芳香を有し、葉体から精油を抽出してダニやカビなどの防虫、防黴剤として用いられてきた。又、特開平７−３２４０３７号公報には月桃の葉体から有機溶媒で抽出する血小板凝集抑制物質の製造法が開示されている。
しかし、月桃の抽出物を用いた育毛剤についての記載はない。
一方、頭髪の脱落、矮化は、外見上はっきりと分かるため、個人の生活の質に大きく影響する。長寿化による老齢化に伴う自然禿のみならず、ストレス等何らかの原因による脱毛が増大しており、その予防・改善の方策が強く求められている。
上記目的には、例えば特開平１−９６１２６号公報に示される抗男性ホルモン活性物質等の技術が、特開平７−５３３３６号公報には合成化合物を有効成分とする育毛剤がそれぞれ開示されている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
脱毛防止治療に関する従来技術では未だその効果は充分ではなく、更に安全で長期に亘って利用できる強力な養毛又は育毛の方法が望まれている。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明は養毛、育毛活性を有する物質を求めて各種検討を重ねた結果、古来様々に利用され、各種安全性についても検討されている月桃抽出物、特に月桃精油に強い育毛活性があることを見出し、本発明を完成させたものである。更に本発明は、該月桃精油を含有する育毛又は発毛剤を用いて、毛髪の育成、養生、脱毛の防止等に使用する方法を提供する。

【発明の実施の形態】
本発明でいう月桃は、ショウガ科のAlpinia 属植物であって、月桃（Alpinia speciosa K. Schum.）、タイリン月桃（Alpinia urarensis Hay.) 、フイリ月桃（Alpinia sanderae Sand.) 、ヤクチ（Alpinia oxyphylla L.）、タイワン月桃（Alpinia sp.)から選ばれる植物である。
本発明における月桃精油とは、上記月桃から選択される植物の葉を水蒸気蒸留して得られる精油分である。本発明における月桃抽出物には、例えば上記月桃から選択される植物の葉を水蒸気蒸留した月桃精油、茎葉を搾汁後抽出したもの、根や種子を粉砕後抽出したもの等が挙げられ、茎葉根等の搾汁物そのものを抽出物として用いることもできるが、入手の容易性からは、市販の月桃精油を用いるのが簡便である。抽出物の製造における抽出は、必要に応じて有機溶剤等を用いて実施することもできる。抽出に際して植物体は、そのままでも乾燥粉砕して用いても良い。本発明の有効成分である月桃の抽出物、例えば月桃精油を抽出するための溶剤は特に限定されるものではないが、例えばメタノール、エタノール等のアルコール類、ヘキサン、ブタン等の脂肪族炭化水素類、酢酸エチル等のエステル類、アセトン等のケトン類又は水等を使用することができ、これらの溶剤は単独でも二種以上混合して使用することもできる。又、抽出物は粗抽出物を用いても良く、更に精製したものを用いることもできる。

月桃抽出物を有効成分として含有する育毛又は発毛剤（化粧品等に用いられる場合の養毛、育毛料を含む。）は人間や動物の禿、薄毛、脱毛等の予防、治療をするのに有用なものであり、休止期にある毛根を活性化させる『発毛剤』としての活性も有するものである。脱毛の原因には様々の原因が推定されている。即ち、男性ホルモンの活性化、ホルモンのバランスの乱れ、頭皮血行不良、着帽等によるの皮膚の蒸れ又は洗浄不良等により頭皮の異常、毛根が皮脂等により詰まり呼吸が不十分になる、毛母細胞の血流が不充分になる、又は様々のストレスによるホルモン・栄養バランスの不良を原因とする説等がある。
本発明の月桃抽出物を有効成分として含有する育毛又は発毛剤は、上記原因等にかかわらず使用することができ、人間のみならず、動物に対しても適用することもでき、例えば剃毛後の動物の育毛又は発毛等の増強にも用いることができる。かかる動物、特に毛を採取する目的を有する動物としては各種哺乳動物があり、例えば羊等の偶蹄類、ウサギ類、ミンク、キツネ等の食肉類等の動物が例示でき、その使用量は、通常、人間の場合、例えば成人１人１日当たり、有効成分量として０．０１ｇ〜２．５ｇ程度の範囲の使用量であり、動物の場合、体の大小、塗布面積等により一定しないが、有効成分量として０．０１ｇ〜１０ｇの範囲から適宜選択して使用すれば良い。
