Claims (14)
- 第1光吸収軸を有する上部偏光板と、上部電極および上部配向膜を含む上部基板と、第1光吸収軸と軸方向が実質的に平行な第2光吸収軸を有する下部偏光板と、下部電極及び配向膜を含む下部基板と、前記上部配向膜と前記下部配向膜の中、いずれか一つに形成された強誘電性液晶層及び、前記上部配向膜と前記下部配向膜の中、いずれか一つと前記強誘電性液晶層の間に形成されるネマチック系液晶層とを備えることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
- 前記ネマチック系液晶層は前記強誘電性液晶層により実質的に平面で駆動することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記上部及び下部電極は透明電極であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記強誘電性液晶層の自発分極の方向は、前記強誘電性液晶層が形成される前記上部基板と前記下部基板の中いずれか一つに向かうことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記強誘電性液晶層の自発分極の方向は、前記ネマチック系液晶層に向かうことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 第1光吸収軸を有する上部偏光板を上部基板上で形成する段階と、前記第1光吸収軸と軸方向が実質的に平行な第2光吸収軸を有する下部偏光板を下部基板上で形成する段階と、前記上部基板上で上部電極と上部配向膜を形成して前記下部基板上で下部電極と下部配向膜を形成する段階と、
前記上部配向膜と前記下部配向膜の中、いずれか一つに強誘電性液晶層を形成する段階と、前記上部配向膜と前記下部配向膜の中、いずれか一つと前記強誘電性液晶層の間にネマチック系液晶層を形成する段階とを含むことを特徴とする液晶表示装置の製造方法。 - 前記強誘電性液晶層を形成する段階は、強誘電性液晶を溶媒に混合して強誘電性液晶溶液を形成する段階と、前記溶液を前記上部基板と前記下部基板の中、少なくともいずれか一つに塗布する段階と、前記基板を加熱して前記溶液内の溶媒を蒸発させる段階と、前記強誘電性液晶の自発分極の方向を特定の一方向に整列させる段階とを含むことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記溶液は、約93wt%乃至97wt%の間の前記強誘電性液晶と、約3wt%乃至7wt%の間の前記溶媒とを含むことを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 強誘電性液晶の自発分極の方向を整列する段階は、極性を有する媒体に強誘電性液晶を露出させる段階と、電界を強誘電性液晶に印加する段階及び、磁界を強誘電性液晶に印加する段階の中、いずれか一つの段階を含むことを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 強誘電性液晶層を形成する段階は、強誘電性液晶と光重合モノマーとを混合することによって強誘電性液晶溶液を形成する段階と、少なくとも一つの上部基板及び下部基板上に前記溶液を塗布する段階と、前記強誘電性液晶の自発分極の方向を特定の一方向に整列させる段階及び紫外線を前記溶液に照射することによって前記光重合モノマーを重合させる段階とを含むことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記溶液は、約95wt%乃至99wt%の間の前記強誘電性液晶と、約1wt%乃至5wt%の間の前記溶媒とを含むことを特徴とする請求項10に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 強誘電性液晶の自発分極の方向を整列する段階は、極性を有する媒体に強誘電性液晶を露出させる段階と、電界を強誘電性液晶に印加する段階及び、磁界を強誘電性液晶に印加する段階の中、いずれか一つの段階を含むことを特徴とする請求項10に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記強誘電性液晶層の自発分極の方向を、前記強誘電性液晶層が形成される基板に向かうように整列する段階を更に含むことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
- 前記強誘電性液晶層の自発分極の方向を、前記ネマチック系液晶層に向かうように整列する段階を更に含むことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置の製造方法。
