【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to information reproduction systems. Furthermore, the present invention relates to time shifting of media programs.
[0002]
Background of the Invention
Many information forms available through many media types are available for delayed playback. For example, video cassette recorders (VCRs), laser diodes and digital versatile discs (DVDs) allow time shifts in audio / visual (A / V) programs. Audio playback systems include devices such as cassette tape players and compact disc (CD) players. Audio content stored and played back on these devices typically includes music, audio books and radio program or lecture recordings. Other media will be available or will be available for time shifts of various program types.
[0003]
One drawback of these conventional playback devices is that they are not entirely adaptable. For example, it may have parts distributed across several storage components. A single audio book or series of lectures requires multiple cassettes or CDs to fully cover the audio. Audio / visual programs such as movies also require a large number of storage components. Another drawback is that cassettes (video or audio) and optical media (CD, DVD, etc.) write new content when the user exits the original content leading to a surge in storage media to be treated or stored. It is not possible. Although there is a technique for rewriting the original material, there is almost no opportunity to obtain new content and overwrite it on the original content purchased by the user.
[0004]
The prior art also includes a digital playback device that stores audio content in a rewritable memory such as a flash memory. Although it is convenient to obtain and use program content using such devices, there is typically no applicability with respect to storage and use of program content. For example, a playback device stores a time limited portion of some audio content. The user needs to listen to the finished part before storing the next part of the audio content or a different selection. Prior art digital playback devices typically store a large selection of programs and cannot use selections at different rates. Therefore, there is a need for an improved playback device that provides personalized and time-shifted programs.
[0005]
Summary of the Invention
A method and apparatus for a personalized, time-shifted program is described. Digital content is read from the library and stored for subsequent playback. A subset of the content is stored in the playback device and is automatically selected to update the consumed content according to the user's predetermined specifications.
[0006]
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals refer to like elements, without limitation.
[0007]
Detailed description
A method and apparatus for a personalized, time-shifted audio program is described. In the following description, for the purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other words, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring the present invention.
[0008]
Although the term digital audio program is generally described, the present invention is not limited to personalization and time shifting of audio content. The present invention is equally applicable to media such as video, audio / video (A / V) and other media or media combinations. The present invention can be used with devices having limited storage resources, such as the amount of memory on a fixed board. The invention consumes program content (by listening to audio content, watching video content) and having content that is automatically updated in a manner consistent with user content consumption. Is acceptable. The present invention also allows the user to maintain multiple program selections in a single storage device and consume multiple selections at different rates. Multiple program selections may be updated in different ways depending on the type of content and user preferences.
[0009]
In summary, with respect to audio content, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for searching for audio contacts as well as time shifting and personalization of playback. In one embodiment, digital audio content is retrieved from, for example, a digital audio library. Once retrieved, the audio content is stored, for example, in a personal computer or other storage device. All or a part of the stored audio content is transferred to the playback device so that the user can listen to the audio content on the playback device.
[0010]
In one embodiment, the user specifies a portion of the playback time provided by the playback device for various audio selections. For example, with a playback device that provides two hours of audio content, a user may want to listen to 30 minutes of daily news, a 30 minute comedy series, and an hour of audio books. In such a case, the user assigns a 15 minute playback time to each news and comedy and a 30 minute playback time to the audio book.
[0011]
In one embodiment, the present invention provides different automatic update techniques for playback devices selected by the user based on how the audio content is to be used. For example, the news part may be the latest hourly news available from a particular source. The comedy series may be the oldest unconsumed episode in the series. The audio book portion prepares one hour of audio book from the most recent stop location each time the playback device is coupled to the library reading device. Of course, other combinations and scenarios may be made.
[0012]
Overview of the structure for providing personal program content
FIG. 1 illustrates one embodiment of a block diagram of components that provide a personal and time-shifted audio program. The embodiment of FIG. 1 is described by a personal computer, the Internet, and a web server, but can be configured with other components. The components of FIG. 1 can be modified to provide personal time-shifted programming for media other than audio.

[0024]
Although the present invention has been described as pulling content from a library to a playback device, the concept of the present invention is similar to pushing content from a library to a playback device or playback storage device. Applicable to. The content push is performed according to the specific user's specifications regarding what content is desired and how it should be stored and updated. The content is pushed randomly to the user or the user to push the content is selected based on the revealed or recognized preferences. The revealed preferences can be gained through registration or other processes (where the user receives a series of questions) and other ways of obtaining information from responses generated by the user. Acknowledged preferences are those that can be obtained (acknowledged) through observation of the type of content selected by the user. For example, sports content is pushed to users who have previously consumed other sports content.

The player 300 includes
[0027]
In summary, the player 300 includes a processor having a random access memory (RAM) therein. A normal read only memory (ROM) and a memory storage device such as a flash memory are provided outside the processor. The ROM stores operating software, and the flash memory (or other memory storage device) stores audio data.
[0028]
Player 300 may include an interface for receiving removable media storing media content. For example, a flash memory card that stores audio content can be inserted into the player 300. Audio content stored on the removable media can be played directly from the removable media, and can also be stored on the player 300 by copying from the removable media (for later playback).
[0029]
Time-shifting audio programs for personal use
The present invention, as a whole, provides intelligent use of the frame area and used area of the memory of a playback device and provides the user with seamless (seamless) playback of program content. Furthermore, the present invention provides for individually playing various programs, such as news programs, audio books, entertainment, etc., at different speeds.
[0030]
FIG. 4 shows an example of allocation of playback time of audio contents that can be provided. Although an example for an audio program is shown in FIG. 4, the storage and playback concepts can be applied to other forms of programs such as video and audio / visual.
[0031]
In the example shown in FIG. 4, the playback time is 2 hours. The first 30 minutes will provide the latest financial news, and the next 30 minutes will provide episodes from the interview series. The last hour is provided with the audio novel selected by the user. Of course, it is possible to provide a playback time longer or shorter than two hours.
[0032]
The three audio selections shown in FIG. 4 are updated in three different ways in one embodiment.
[0033]
In one embodiment, playback times that have not yet been allocated can be used to extend playback times that have already been specified. For example, if the user has allocated 30 minutes for a series and 30 minutes for an audio book, the unallocated playback time can be used for the audio book. Alternatively, in the example of FIG. 4, if the next interview episode is not yet available, the 30 minutes designated for the Interview Series will be used for the audio book until it is available. it can.
[0034]
FIG. 5 is an embodiment of a flow diagram that automatically provides the newest audio content. The method of updating audio content described in connection with FIG. 5 is used, for example, for audio content that changes frequently and that the listener desires to listen to the latest edition. Examples of such content include, but are not limited to, economic news, world news, sports scores and the like.
[0035]
The steps of FIG. 5 are performed, for example, by a computer system coupled to the Internet that accesses a digital audio library.
[0036]
FIG. 5 begins at step 500. During step 500, the playback device may or may not have the desired edition of the audio content. An audio content edition is a large segment of audio content. For example, an interview series may be audio content with each interview being an edition series or episode. If the playback device does not have any edition of the desired audio content, the latest available edition is retrieved and stored.
[0037]
If the playback device currently stores an edition of the desired audio content,
[0038]
In
[0039]
The retrieved edition is stored in the library access device or playback device. Once stored on the library access device, all or part of the retrieved edition will later be stored on the playback device.
[0040]
FIG. 6 is a flow diagram for automatically providing an episode of a series of episodes. The update method described in connection with FIG. 6 is used, for example, when a user is interested in listening to a series and wants to listen to the latest edition of that series.
[0041]
Like the steps of FIG. 5 described above, the steps of FIG. 6 are performed, for example, by a computer system coupled to the Internet that accesses a digital library. The computer system automatically retrieves audio content for the playback device regardless of whether the playback device is currently coupled to the computer system.
[0042]
The method begins at
[0043]
In
[0044]
Of course, the steps described with respect to FIG. 6 may be modified to search from the series after the user has listened to the already searched edition. A new edition may also be retrieved and stored by the library access device and stored on the playback device after the old edition has been used.
[0045]
In other embodiments, a portion of the next episode may be stored in memory allocated for the series. For example, when a user listens to 10 minutes of a 30 minute episode and is assigned 30 minutes to store an episode, the playback device stores the 20 minutes after that episode and
[0046]
FIG. 7 is an embodiment of a flow diagram that automatically and seamlessly updates until all audio content is updated. The method described with respect to FIG. 7 is used, for example, when a listener listens to an audio book. Suppose a listener stores an audio book of one hour on a playback device and listens to the audio book for 25 minutes before the playback device is disconnected from the library access device. When the listener joins the playback device to the library access device, it stores the next 25 minutes following the one hour previously stored in the playback device at the location of the previously heard 25 minutes. Therefore, the playback device stores one hour of the audio book that the listener wants to listen to.

In this way, the audio selection is seamlessly updated without the user being aware of the memory limitations of the playback device. When the playback device is coupled to the library access device after the listening session, the used content of the playback device is replaced with new content from the library access device or other source.
[0053]
Thus, it is possible to provide the user with a mobile playback device that provides and updates audio according to the user's specifications. The user specifies the time allotted to play one or more audio selections. The user specifies how to update each of the audio selections. In this way, the user can personalize and time shift the audio program according to the predetermined usage.
[0054]
As described above, the present invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments. However, it is possible to modify the present invention without departing from the broad spirit and scope of the present invention. The specification and drawings are, accordingly, to be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.
