【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、液晶モジュールのアレイ基板の端部に用いるトランスファパッドなどの配線端子に関する。

【従来の技術】
図3に示すように、液晶セル40は、アレイ基板28とカラーフィルター基板26とを隙間を有して対向させ、その隙間に液晶を封入したものである。液晶モジュールは、液晶セル40にバックライトやドライバーなどを装着した表示装置である。アレイ基板28の端部でカラーフィルター基板26が対向していない箇所には、ドライバーなどを接続するためのOLB(Outer Lead Bonding)パッド42が設けられている。アレイ基板28とカラーフィルター基板26がトランスファパッド11で接続される。トランスファパッド11は、図3に示すように、カラーフィルター基板26の端部において複数箇所に設けられる。トランスファパッド11は、カラーフィルター基板26がアレイ基板28と共通電位を得るための配線端子である。

周知のOLBパッド42は、図4に示すように、金属パターン12上にITOパターン14bを設けた構造をとっている。周知のトランスファパッド11は、図5に示すように、カラーフィルター基板26のITOパターン18と金属パターン12上にITOパターン14bとが、トランスファ20を介して接続される。

なお、図4と図5において封止24を挟んで金属パターン12の反対側に液晶が封入されたり、マトリックス状の配線が施されたりする。

モバイル製品の軽量化はビジネス上重要な要素であり、特に液晶セル11の重量の大部分を占めているアレイ基板28やカラーフィルター基板26のガラス基板を研磨することは、製品の軽量化にとって最も重要な要素である。軽量化の手法として、例えば、液晶を封入した状態の液晶セル40をラッピングと呼ばれる荒削り、およびポリッシングをおこなうメカニカル研磨方法がある。

上記研磨工程で、例えば、水にランタン系、セリウム系、アルミニウム系などの硬い微粒子を含ませた研磨混合水により液晶セル40の両表面を削る。その際、セル封止24より外部にあるOLBパッド42、トランスファパッド11などの金属パターン12に研磨混合水が付着し、腐食が発生する。そのため、通常のむき出しているOLBパッド42には、図4に示すように、保護材44を塗布し研磨作業中に研磨混合水が付着しないよう処理を行う。しかし、図5に示すように、トランスファパッド11はアレイ基板28とカラーフィルター基板26とが対向し、かつ封止24の外部にあるため、研磨混合水に対する保護処理ができず腐食を発生させる。

トランスファパッド11の腐食のメカニズムについて説明する。(A)、液晶セル40を研磨するときに、液晶セル40の内部に電荷が溜まる。液晶セル40内部は内蔵ショートリングにより液晶駆動用電極が一枚板となるため、外部に対して1つの大きなコンデンサーとなる。ショートリングは、静電気などによって液晶モジュールに過電流が発生したときにアースに接続するためのスイッチである。(B)、(A)の状態でOLBパッド42を保護材44で保護すると、トランスファパッド11が電荷放出場所になる。(C)、(B)の状態でトランスファパッド11が研磨混合水にふれると、液晶セル40内の電荷はトランスファパッド11を経由して流れ出し、研磨混合水中のイオンと電荷のやりとりをするために、急激な電池効果によりトランスファパッド11の腐食反応が進む。

電池効果について説明する。この電池効果の説明において金属パターン12はAl系金属を使用し、Alパターン12とする。研磨中、上述したように液晶セル40には電荷が溜まる。また、研磨混合水のH2O成分はH+とOH−とに分解される。H+はAlパターン12を介して電子のやりとりをおこないH2となる。電子を失ったAlパターン12は、イオン化してAl+となり、OH−と結びついてAl(OH)3となる。以上より、Alパターン12が溶ける。言い換えるとAlパターン12が腐食する。以上が液晶セル40の研磨時に発生する電池効果である。

トランスファパッド11の腐食による製品への影響は次の通りである。(1)トランスファパッド11は、カラーフィルター基板26に共通電位の供給をおこなう起点となっているため、腐食により数カ所あるトランスファパッド11のいくつかが機能しなくなり、共通電位の供給不足をまねき、フリッカー不良、クロストーク不良などの画質不良が起きる。(2)トランスファパッド11の接続された配線にも腐食が進行すると、液晶セル40内を腐食し、液晶セル40内に気泡が発生する。

腐食の発生しにくいMo(モリブデン)やW(タングステン)などを含む合金材料でトランスファパッド11を構成することが考えられる。しかし、液晶モジュールの高解像度化にともない、トランスファパッド11に低抵抗金属であるAl系金属を使用する機会が多い。

積極的に腐食を発生させて電極を保護する配線端子が特許文献1に開示されている。特許文献1は、1枚の金属配線膜上に保護膜が設けてあり、その保護膜に電気接続をおこなうための接続孔と大気暴露部が設けてある。大気暴露部で腐食を発生させ、カソード防食によって接続孔のある金属配線を保護している。しかし、1枚の金属配線膜に腐食を発生させる箇所と電極になる箇所があるため、大気暴露部の面積が小さく、大気暴露部と接続孔との距離が短いと、接続孔の金属配線膜まで腐食が進行する危険性がある。

本発明の目的は、水などの付着による腐食から保護可能な構造を有する配線端子を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明の配線端子の要旨は、配線が敷設された基板の端部に設けられる配線端子であって、前記配線に接続された電極と、電池効果による腐食で前記電極を保護する避雷針パッドと、前記電極と避雷針パッドを接続し、前記避雷針パッドの腐食を遮断する導電膜と、を含む。避雷針パッドが電池効果によって腐食し、電極が保護される。避雷針パッドに発生した腐食は導電膜によって電極に進行することが遮断され、電極が確実に保護される。

【発明の実施の形態】
本発明の配線端子の実施形態について、図面を使用して説明する。配線端子は、アレイ基板とカラーフィルター基板とが対向した位置に設けられるトランスファパッドである。

図1に示すように、本発明のトランスファパッド10は、アレイ基板28の配線に接続された金属パターン12と、電池効果による腐食で金属パターン12を保護する避雷針パッド16と、金属パターン12と避雷針パッド16を接続し、避雷針パッド16の腐食が金属パターン12に到達するのを遮断する導電膜14aと、を含む。金属パターン12は、アレイ基板28の配線の端部に設けられる電極であり、Alなどで形成する。避雷針パッド16は、例えばAlなどの腐食が発生する材質で形成する。

金属パターン12と避雷針パッド16とは導電膜14aによって接続され、金属パターン12と避雷針パッド16とで電子のやりとりをおこなうことができる。導電膜14aは例えばITO(Indium Tin Oxide)を使用する。ITOは耐腐食性の導電膜であり、避雷針パッド16の腐食が金属パターン12まで進行するのを遮断する。導電膜14aは、耐腐食性の導電体であれば、ITO以外のものでも良い。また、導電膜14aを支えるための絶縁膜22を設ける。

カラーフィルター基板26の電極18はトランスファ20によってアレイ基板28側の導電膜14aと接続され、カラーフィルター基板26に共通電位を供給する。カラーフィルター基板26の電極18はITOで構成する。

従来のトランスファパッド11は、従来技術の説明において電池効果による腐食が発生することを説明した。発明に至る種々の実験結果からトランスファパッドの腐食は次のような特徴がある。(a)、研磨処理時の帯電量がトランスファパッド腐食に影響を及ぼす。(b)、数カ所あるトランスファパッドの内、最も研磨混合水の付着しやすい場所に集中して発生する。(c)、腐食される総面積はプロセス条件の変更によらずほぼ一定となる。

以上より、避雷針パッド16は金属パターン12から十分に距離をとる。避雷針パッド16と金属パターン12との距離は例えば0.3mmとする。最も研磨混合水の付着しやすい液晶セル40の外端部に図1に示すように避雷針パッド16を配置する。液晶セル40の外端部であれば、液晶セル40の研磨の際に研磨混合水が付着しやすく、優先的に腐食を発生させることができる。想定される腐食面積以上の面積の避雷針パッド16とする。避雷針パッド16の面積は例えば0.8mm2とする。

以上の構成にすることにより、液晶セル40を研磨混合水で研磨するときに、避雷針パッド16に研磨混合水が付着し、電池効果によって腐食する。避雷針パッド16で電池効果が発生するため、金属パターン12に研磨混合水が付着しても金属パターン12は腐食が発生せず、金属パターン12を腐食より守ることができる。したがって、カラーフィルター基板26に対して共通電位の供給不足が発生することはなく、フリッカー不良やクロストーク不良などの画質不良を引き起こすことはない。また、腐食が液晶セル40内部まで進行して液晶セル40内部に気泡を発生させることはない。引用文献1は大気暴露部と接続孔の金属配線膜が同じ金属配線膜で繋がっていた。本願発明は引用文献1と異なり金属パターン12と避雷針パッド16とが分離され、耐腐食性のITOで接続されているため、避雷針パッド16の腐食が金属パターン12まで到達する恐れはない。

保護材を塗布することができないトランスファパッド10について説明したが、保護材を塗布することが可能なOLBパッドについても上記の避雷針パッド16を設け、導電膜14aで金属パターン12と避雷針パッド16とを接続しても良い。保護材を塗布せずに研磨しても水の付着による腐食から金属パターン12を保護することができる。

また、特許文献1に示したような金属配線膜上に保護膜を設けた態様であっても、本願発明の技術思想における配線端子30は、図2に示すように、基板32上の金属配線膜34a,34bを分離した構成にする。分離された金属配線膜34a,34bをITOなどの導電膜14cで接続する。金属配線膜34a,34b上の保護膜36には窓38a,38bが設けてあり、電気接続をおこなったり腐食を発生させたりする。腐食が発生するのは大気暴露部の金属配線膜34aであり、ITOによって腐食が接続孔の金属配線膜34bまで進行することはない。

以上、本発明の実施の形態を説明したが、本発明は上記の実施の形態に限定されることはない。その他、本発明は、主旨を逸脱しない範囲で当業者の知識に基づき種々の改良、修正、変更を加えた態様で実施できるものである。

【発明の効果】
本発明の配線端子は、液晶セルを研磨するときに電極を腐食より守ることができる。したがって、カラーフィルター基板に対して共通電位の供給不足が発生することはなく、フリッカー不良やクロストーク不良などの画質不良を引き起こすことはない。また、腐食が液晶セル内部まで進行して液晶セル内部に気泡を発生させることはない。引用文献1と異なり電極と避雷針パッドとが分離され、耐腐食性のITOで接続されているため、避雷針パッドの腐食が電極まで到達する恐れはない。
