Description
【0001】
この種の画像生成装置は、通常、三次元物体300に関する画像情報を記憶するVRAM(Video Random Access Memory)を備えている。

【0050】
この画像生成装置は、図1に示すように、制御部1,ディスプレイ2,ROM(Read-Only Memory)3,RAM(Random Access Memory)4,DMA(Direct Memory Access Channel)コントローラ5,ディスクコントローラ6,及びディスク装置7,VRAM(メモリ領域)8を主たる構成要素としている。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
This type of image generation apparatus normally includes a VRAM (Video Random Access Memory) that stores image information regarding the three-
In this VRAM, a memory area is divided according to the type of information to be stored. For example, a frame buffer for storing an image to be displayed on a display and a Z buffer for storing depth information of a three-
[0005]
By the way, in recent years, user requirements for image quality, such as higher image quality and an increase in the number of simultaneous colors, have become stricter. However, in the program design stage, the allocation of VRAM (for example, 4 MB for game devices) with a limited storage capacity to each of the frame buffer, Z buffer, and texture buffer is fixedly determined. In some cases, there is a gap between the image quality required by the designer and the image quality that can be displayed within the usable capacity of each buffer designed by the designer.
In addition, since the usable capacity of each buffer is fixed at the program design stage and cannot be changed at the time of use, for example, when used in a game device rich in scene change, the memory area in the VRAM However, it was not necessarily used efficiently.
[0006]
For example, for a Z buffer that stores depth information (so-called Z value), an appropriate bit length can be selected from 8, 16, 24, and 32 bits for one pixel. The higher the accuracy (the longer the bit length, the longer the bit length), the greater the required capacity of the Z buffer. Therefore, if the required bit length per pixel for depth information is fixed at 32 bits at the design stage. As long as there is an upper limit on the VRAM capacity, the result is that the usable capacity of the frame buffer and texture buffer is compressed.
[0007]
However, if the required bit length of depth information is set short in the design stage, the calculation result at the time of depth determination is likely to include an error, and this causes a decrease in depth determination accuracy.
For example, for an indoor stage, a required bit length per pixel for depth information of 16 bits is sufficient. Is not sufficient unless it is 24 or 32 bits.
[0008]
However, there are cases where the Z buffer is not necessary in a scene where the drawing order of a three-dimensional object to be displayed on the display is predetermined or only a two-dimensional object is displayed, such as a character selection screen.
In such a case, if the Z buffer capacity can be reduced and the usable capacity of the texture buffer can be increased accordingly, a high quality texture can be stored in the VRAM, and a high quality image can be displayed. become.
[0009]
Also, in the case where full color (for example, 256 colors in 8 bits) is not used as in the case of expressing a gray scale world, the capacity of the frame buffer can be reduced, and the capacity of other buffers can be increased accordingly. .
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and an object thereof is to effectively utilize a limited image display memory area.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, the following means were adopted.
Book The present invention is an image generation apparatus for displaying an image obtained by perspective projection conversion of a three-dimensional display object on a projection plane of a viewpoint coordinate system on a display, and a frame buffer for storing an image to be displayed on the display, A memory area shared by at least two of the Z buffer for storing depth information of the three-dimensional display object and the texture buffer for storing texture data used for texture mapping is provided, and the capacity allocated to these shared buffers is variable. It is said that it is said.

At least two of the frame buffer for storing the image, the Z buffer for storing the depth information of the 3D display object, and the texture buffer for storing the texture data used for texture mapping share the memory area. The step of variably controlling the allocated capacity is provided.
[0013]
With the above configuration, the usable capacity allocated to at least two shared buffers among the frame buffer, Z buffer, and texture buffer is not fixed to the capacity at the time of design. Therefore, the usable capacity allocated to each shared buffer can be increased or decreased according to the capacity required for each shared buffer, so that the image display memory area can be efficiently used.

As is clear from the above description, according to the present invention, the following effects can be obtained.
(1) Since the usable capacity allocated to each shared buffer can be increased or decreased according to the capacity required for each shared buffer for the image displayed on the display, the image display memory area is efficiently utilized. be able to.
[0088]
(2) The required capacity of the frame buffer and the Z buffer can be reduced by reducing the required number of pixels for display display according to the required display area of the display, thereby increasing the usable capacity of the texture buffer. Therefore, a high quality texture can be mapped to a polygon.
[0089]
(3) The required capacity of the frame buffer and Z buffer is reduced by shortening the required bit length for one pixel of the display according to the required number of simultaneous color developments and the required depth judgment accuracy, so that the texture buffer can be used Since the capacity can be increased, a high-quality texture can be mapped to a polygon.
