BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical fiber amplifier.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An optical fiber amplifier using a rare earth element-doped fiber is widely known as an optical direct amplification device. Such an optical fiber amplifier generally includes a signal light input unit, a pumping light source, a wavelength multiplexer, a rare earth element doped fiber, and an amplified signal light output unit, and the signal light input from the outside to the signal light input unit and the pumping light source The excitation light from the light is input to the wavelength combiner and the combined light is output, and the combined light is input to the rare earth element-doped fiber and output as amplified signal light, which is output from the amplified signal light output unit to the outside. It is the structure which outputs to.
[0003]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 10-154840 connects a portion on the signal light input side from the wavelength multiplexer and a portion on the amplified signal high output side from the rare earth element doped fiber via an optical bandpass filter. An optical fiber amplifier provided with a formed feedback loop is disclosed. With such a configuration, spontaneous emission light emitted from a rare earth element-doped fiber circulates in the feedback loop, and the feedback loop operates as a ring laser. Since the gain of the feedback loop is 1, the gain of the rare earth element doped fiber is determined to be a value that compensates for the loss of the loop, so that the rare earth element is used regardless of the magnitude of the input signal light power. Dope phiBaIt is described as being fixed at a certain gain.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
By the way, a laser diode or the like is used as a pumping light source of such an optical fiber amplifier, but it is necessary even without controlling the power of pumping light emitted from the pumping light source (in the case of LD, controlling the pumping LD current). Such control is not performed from the viewpoint that the gain of the rare earth element doped fiber can be obtained.
[0005]
The present invention has been made in view of such points, and an object thereof is to provide an optical fiber amplifier that operates in a low noise figure state by controlling the power of pumping light emitted from the pumping light source. There is to do.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present invention is formed by bypassing a rare earth element-doped fiber amplifier by bypassing a portion on the signal light input side from the wavelength multiplexer and a portion on the amplified signal high output side from the rare earth element doped fiber through an optical filter. An automatic gain control loop is provided, the power of the oscillation light circulating through the automatic gain control loop is monitored, and the power of the excitation light from the excitation light source is controlled based on the monitored oscillation light power. It is.
[0007]
Specifically, the present invention provides:
A signal light input unit to which signal light is input from the outside;
An excitation light source that emits excitation light;
A wavelength multiplexer that receives the signal light from the signal light input unit and the excitation light from the excitation light source, and combines them;
A rare earth element-doped fiber for amplifying the signal light, into which the signal light and the excitation light from the wavelength multiplexer are combined, and
An amplified signal light output unit that outputs the amplified signal light amplified by the rare earth element-doped fiber to the outside,
An optical filter that transmits only light of a specific wavelength is interposed between the signal light input unit and the wavelength multiplexer in the amplifier body circuit and between the rare earth element-doped fiber and the amplified signal light output unit. The spontaneous emission light generated from the rare earth element-doped fiber is oscillated light that returns to the rare earth element doped fiber and circulates again through the wavelength multiplexer and the optical filter. In an optical fiber amplifier provided with an automatic gain control loop configured so that the gain of the rare earth element doped fiber becomes constant when the oscillation light power is saturated by being repeatedly amplified by the rare earth element doped fiber,
The power of the oscillating light circulating through the automatic gain control loop is monitored, and based on the monitored oscillating light power, the oscillating light power becomes a critical state or a non-saturated state between a saturated state and a non-saturated state.And the gain of the rare earth element-doped fiber is substantially the same as the gain when the oscillation light power is saturated.As described above, an excitation light source control unit that feedback-controls the power of excitation light from the excitation light source is provided.
[0008]
When the input signal light power is small and the small signal is input, the amplified signal light power is not saturated and the oscillation light power is saturated, the gain of the rare earth element-doped fiber is constant, and the oscillation light power is constant. Is also constant. In addition, when the input signal light has a large power, the amplified signal light power is saturated and the oscillation light power is non-saturated, and the gain of the rare earth element doped fiber is smaller than when the small signal is input. The oscillation light power becomes a constant value smaller than that when a small signal is input, and the output power of the amplified signal light becomes a constant value smaller than that when a small signal is input. In the transition between the small signal input and the large signal input, both the amplified signal light power and the oscillation light power are in a non-saturated state, and the rare earth element-doped fiber becomes closer to the large signal input from the small signal input. The gain of the laser beam gradually decreases and the oscillation light power also gradually decreases. According to the above configuration of the present invention, a small signal input state where the oscillation light power is in a critical state between a saturated state and a non-saturated state or a non-saturated state, a critical time in a transient state, or a transient state or a large signal input state is realized. As described above, the pump light power from the pump light source is feedback-controlled, that is, the pump light power is set so that the oscillating light power is equal to or less than that at the time of small signal input based on the monitored oscillating light power. Since the optical fiber amplifier is controlled, the optical fiber amplifier operates in a low noise figure region, and a low noise optical fiber amplifier is configured.Further, in the conventional optical fiber amplifier, since the pumping light power was not controlled, the pumping light power more than necessary was consumed in some cases. However, according to the above configuration, the oscillation light power is saturated. And a state where the gain of the rare earth element doped fiber becomes substantially the same as the gain at the time of small signal input, that is, at the critical state or at the time of transient The pumping light power is controlled so that a state close to that at the time of small signal input is realized, and the gain of the rare earth element-doped fiber almost the same as that at the time of small signal input can be obtained with the minimum necessary pumping light power. Thus, it is possible to achieve power saving of the excitation light source as compared with the conventional case. In addition, if the oscillation light power is controlled so that a critical state between a saturated state and a non-saturated state, that is, a critical state between a small signal input and a transient state is realized, the effect of power saving of the pumping light source can be obtained. It will be the largest. Here, that the gain of the rare earth element-doped fiber is “substantially the same” means that the gain difference is within 1 dB.
[0009]
As the rare earth element-doped fiber, an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) having a core doped with erbium (Er) is preferably used, but praseodymium (Pr), ytterbium (Yb), or neodymium (Nd) is doped. It may be a thing. The rare earth element-doped fiber is controlled to be constant at a gain corresponding to the loop loss by an automatic gain control loop when the oscillation light power is saturated. In order to set the gain to a predetermined value, the attenuator is used. Or an optical attenuating element such as a circulator may be provided in the automatic gain control loop.
[0010]
The pumping light source controller is preferably configured to monitor the oscillation light power from a bypass path in the automatic gain control loop. For example, if the automatic gain control loop is configured to monitor the oscillation light in the portion between the wavelength multiplexer and the rare earth element doped fiber, the amplified signal light is also transmitted through that portion, so the oscillation light is monitored. In this case, the signal light may be adversely affected. However, according to the above configuration, the oscillation light can be monitored without adversely affecting the amplified signal light.
[0011]
Further, the excitation light source control unit is converted by the branch coupler that branches out the oscillation light from the automatic gain control loop, the photoelectric conversion element that converts the oscillation light extracted by the branch coupler into an electrical signal, and the photoelectric conversion element. It is preferable to include a control unit main body that controls the power of the excitation light from the excitation light source based on the electrical signal. If a oscillating light is extracted by a spectroscope or a filter and feedback controlled, a complicated device is required. However, according to such a configuration, it is very easy to perform analog processing based on an electric signal converted by a photoelectric conversion element. The excitation light source can be controlled. Here, examples of the photoelectric conversion element include a photodiode and a phototransistor.
[0012]
Then, the signal light from the signal light input unit is input to the wavelength multiplexer and the oscillation light that circulates through the automatic gain control loop is input to the optical attenuator at the branch portion of the bypass path in the amplifier body circuit. A first circulator for transmission to the amplifier circuit, and the amplified signal light from the rare earth element doped fiber is output from the amplified signal light output unit and circulates in the automatic gain control loop at the junction of the bypass path in the amplifier body circuit It is preferable that a second circulator is provided that transmits the oscillation light to be input to the rare earth element-doped fiber. According to such a configuration, the input signal light from the signal light input unit and the amplified signal light from the rare earth element doped fiber are all transmitted to the wavelength multiplexer and the amplified signal light output unit without being transmitted to the optical filter side, respectively. Since transmission is performed, loss of the input signal light and the amplified signal light is prevented. Further, since the oscillation light circulates through the automatic gain control loop in the direction opposite to the path of the signal light, the oscillation light is not output from the amplified signal light output unit. Here, the first circulator and the second circulator may be configured separately or may be configured by one circulator. A similar effect can be obtained even if an isolator is provided in the automatic gain control loop.
[0013]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, when the oscillation light power is in a critical state between a saturated state and a non-saturated state or in a non-saturated state, a critical time in a transient state or a transient state or a large signal input state Since the power of pumping light from the pumping light source is feedback-controlled so that the optical fiber amplifier is operated in a low noise figure region, a low-noise optical fiber amplifier can be configured. it can.

First, the target value (Po) of the oscillation light power set in S1 is read. This target value of the oscillating light power is to realize a transient state very close to a low signal input in which both the amplified signal light power and the oscillating light power are not saturated. Next, the oscillation light power (P) is monitored in S2. Subsequently, it is determined whether or not the oscillation light power (P) monitored in S3 is equal to the set oscillation light power (Po). If YES, the process proceeds to S4, the pumping LD current is held, and the process proceeds to S2. Return. If NO, the process proceeds to S5. <Experiment method>
For the three level variables of the pumping light emitted from the pumping LD of 24.23 dBm, 20.07 dBm and 15.49 dBm, the loop loss of the automatic gain control loop is about 10 dB, about 20 dB, about 30 dB and 70 dB for each pumping light power. In each case described above, gain and loss index data were collected when the signal light power was varied from −40 dBm to −2 dBm. At this time, the excitation LD was not controlled.
[0050]
Further, the operation of the optical fiber amplifier was started with the input optical power set to -15 dBm, and the control of the pump LD was started 2 seconds after the start of the operation. The gain and loss index at this time were collected over time.
[0051]
<Experimental result>
4A to 4C show the relationship between signal light power and gain. According to the figure, when the loop loss of the automatic gain control loop is about 10 dB, about 20 dB and about 30 dB, the gain shows a constant value regardless of the signal light power, and the gain increases as the signal light power increases. A characteristic having three parts, that is, a decreasing region and a portion showing the same gain regardless of the value of the loop loss is shown. The region where the gain shows a constant value regardless of the signal light power is when a small signal is input, in which automatic gain control is functioning effectively when the oscillation light power is saturated. In the region where the gain decreases as the input signal light power increases, the input signal light power is large, so the oscillation light power becomes unsaturated, and the automatic gain control is not fully functioning. It's time. The portion showing the same gain regardless of the value of the loop loss is at the time of large signal input in which the amplified signal light power is saturated. When the loop loss is 70 dB or more, the above three parts are not clear. This is because the gain of the EDF that is made constant by the automatic gain control is determined corresponding to the loop loss of the automatic gain control loop, but the gain inherent to the EDF is smaller than the gain determined corresponding to the loop loss of 70 dB or more. It is thought that automatic gain control did not function effectively.
[0052]
4A to 4C, it can be seen that the range of the signal light power subjected to the automatic gain control becomes wider as the pumping light power is increased. Therefore, for example, when the signal light power is −15 dBm, the same gain can be obtained regardless of whether the pump light power is 24.23 dBm or 20.07 dBm. If the control for reducing the pumping light power to the minimum necessary level is performed (so that a state in the vicinity of the critical point between the small signal input and the transient state is always realized), the power consumption of the pumping LD can be reduced.
[0053]
5A to 5C show the relationship between the signal light power and the noise figure. According to the figure, regardless of the data of the loop loss of the automatic gain control loop, the noise figure is lower in the portion where the signal light power is large than in the portion where the signal light power is small. This can be correlated such that the noise figure is relatively high when a small signal is input, and the noise figure is relatively low when a transient signal and a large signal are input. Therefore, the noise figure can be kept low by performing control so that a critical state at the time of small signal input and a transient state or a state at the time of transient or large signal input is realized.
[0054]
6 extracts gain and noise figure data when the signal light power is −5 dBm, −10 dBm, −15 dBm, and −20 dBm when the loop loss of the automatic gain control loop is about 20 dB from FIGS. And the pumping light power. According to the figure, it can be seen that both the gain and the noise figure decrease as the pumping light power decreases. When the signal light power is −5 dBm, when the pump light power is decreased from 25 dBm to 20 dBm, the gain is decreased only slightly, while the noise figure is decreased by 1 dB. Therefore, it can be said that the noise figure can be reduced while maintaining a high EDF gain by setting the pumping light power in consideration of the balance between the reduction in gain and the reduction in noise figure.
[0055]
FIG. 7 shows the relationship between the elapsed time from the start of operation of the optical fiber amplifier and the gain and loss index. According to the figure, the excitation LD control is started 2 seconds after the start of operation, and after 2 seconds (4 seconds from the start of operation), the noise figure decreases and decreases from about 7 dB to over 6 dB, while the gain is It can be seen that there is almost no change. That is, the gain of the EDF made constant by automatic gain control is controlled by controlling so that the transient state is very close at the time of low signal input in which both the amplified signal light power and the oscillation light power become non-saturated. The noise figure can be reduced while maintaining the same EDF gain, and the pumping light power can be operated at a minimum, so that the power consumption of the pumping LD can be reduced. Was confirmed.
