Description
The present invention relates to medical imaging. The present invention is particularly concerned with the correction of medical images to the non-uniform sensitivity of image detectors used in medical imaging.
In the field of digital imaging, a wide variety of image acquisition techniques have been developed that represent digital presentations of medical images.
Among such techniques are computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultrasound, detection of radiation with a CCD sensor or video camera, radiographic film scanning. scanning, direct radiography techniques using radiation sensitive detector elements and others.
In yet another technique, a radiation image, eg, an x-ray image of an exposed object (such as a patient's body) is stored in a photostimulable phosphore screen. . Such a light-excited phosphorescent screen includes a layer of a photostimulable luminescent material and a binder. The photoexcited luminescent material is, for example, europium-activated barium fluoro-halide phosphor or Cs-phosphor.
The phosphor can be energized to the excited state by X-rays and then excited by light in the first wavelength range, and can be excited by the emission of light in the second wavelength range. state).
In order to read the image stored in the screen to be exposed, the screen is scanned two-dimensionally with stimulating light.
The light emitted during excitation is directed to an opto-electric transducer {or transducer array} that converts the detected light into a digital image representation.
There are systems that provide improved image quality through double sided read out of the exposed screen.
In particular, in the field of medical imaging, where a patient body radiation image is used by a doctor to make a diagnosis, all imaging defects that may affect the diagnosis are detected and corrected. Is extremely important.
It is known in the state of the art to correct the radiation image read out of a light-excited phosphorescent screen for detector non-uniformity. According to this method, a planar field exposure of the detector is performed prior to exposure and readout of the diagnostic image. An image corresponding to the planar field exposure is read and stored.
When a diagnostic image is read, this image is also stored. Next, both images are retrieved into memory for correction, and each of the pixels of the diagnostic image is the corresponding {in register} pixel of the image corresponding to the planar field exposure. Corrected by value.
In the case of double-sided readout, this procedure is applied to the readout signal on each side of the detector. Each of the read 'partial image representations' on one side of the detector is modified with a correction signal representing the image obtained by planar field exposure on the relevant side of the detector.
In either case, this correction consists of pixel-by-pixel correction (division or multiplication over two image pixels per side) that needs to be retrieved from memory. As such, the operation is time consuming and negatively impacts the throughput of the system.
This throughput reduction is twice as important due to the two side readings.
It is an aspect of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the prior art.
The object of the invention is achieved by a method for modifying the signal representation of a radiation image of a subject,
-Storing a matrix of correction values in a memory device, said correction values being stored in a radiation detector subjected to a flat field exposure; Obtained by readout, the method also comprising: exposing the radiation detector to a radiation image of an object;
Generating a digital signal representation of the pixel value for each pixel of the radiation image of the object;
Immediately following the generation of the digital pixel value, the pixel value is applied to a processing unit;
Simultaneously a correction value for the pixel is read from the memory and applied to the processing unit;
The pixel value is modified in the processing unit by the modified value;
The correction can be done by dividing each pixel value by the corresponding correction value. Instead, each pixel can be multiplied by the reciprocal of the corresponding correction value, and the reciprocal can be pre-calculated before storing it in the memory device.
In a preferred embodiment, the image corresponding to the planar field exposure is filtered with a digital filter to remove high frequencies. This embodiment is advantageous in that the noise present in the planar field image is reduced so that the signal-to-noise ratio is not adversely affected by the correction.
In certain embodiments, the memory capacity required to store the correction value is reduced by not necessarily determining the pixel value of the planar field image for every pixel. For example, pixel values are stored every 10 rows, 20 rows, 30 rows, etc., and every 10 columns, 20 columns, and 30 columns. The electronic signal processing module then generates a number of values that are identical to the determined values in order to fill the missing pixel values.
The phrase 'generate a digital signal representation of the pixel value for each pixel of the radiation image of the object' is interpreted as including a situation where the detector is subjected to a double-sided read out. It should be.
In this case, the digital signal representation of the pixels obtained from each side can be modified by a correction value obtained by reading the image stored on the relevant side of the radiation detector subjected to plane field exposure. .
−第1及び第2入力(a first and a second input)を有するハードウエア信号処理ユニット(hard ware signal processing unit)とを具備しており、
Another aspect of the invention relates to an apparatus for generating a radiation image of an object, the apparatus comprising:
Image acquisition means for detecting a radiation image of the object by a radiation detector and for generating an electric signal representation of pixel values of the radiation image;
A memory means for storing a matrix of correction values obtained by reading out a radiation image stored in a radiation detector subjected to a planar field exposure;
-A hardware signal processing unit having a first and a second input;
The first input is connected to the image acquisition means for continuously receiving an electrical signal representation of individual pixel values of the radiation image of interest immediately following the generation of the electrical signal representation; and A second input is connected to the memory device for simultaneously receiving corresponding correction values retrieved from the memory device;
The hardware signal processing unit corrects the pixel value received at the first input with the corresponding correction value received simultaneously at the second input;
Since the pixel-by-pixel readout of the detector is performed simultaneously with the pixel-by-pixel correction of the image, no additional time is required for the correction and thus the throughput of the system is not affected.
In a particular embodiment, a filter may be provided for low pass filtering the correction value matrix.
It is also possible to reduce the required storage capacity of the memory by not necessarily determining the pixel value of the planar field image for every pixel. For example, the pixel values are stored every 10 rows, 20 rows, 30 rows, one for every other row, and one for every 10, 20, or 30 columns. The electronic signal processing module is then deployed to generate a number of values identical to the determined value so as to fill the missing pixel value.
In the case of dual-sided reading of a detector, eg, a light-excited phosphor screen, separate hardware processing units (separate hardware processing units) are used to modify the images read from both sides of the detector. processing units) may be provided.

Initially, a radiation image of interest is detected in the readout device 1 and an electrical signal representation is generated. For example, the radiation image is read out from a light-excited phosphor screen, which scans the screen with excitation radiation and detects the light modulated into an image expression that is emitted upon stimulation, and the image By converting the optically modulated light into an analog signal representation.
