Description
液晶表示装置の液晶パネルは、マトリックス形態で画素パターンが形成された基板とそれに対向する基板とで構成される。前記二つの基板の間には、異方性誘電率を有する液晶物質が注入される。前記二つの基板の間に電界が印加され、この電界の強度を調節することによって、基板に透過される光の量が制御され、所望の画像が表示される。
図1のデータ信号は、電圧レベルによって表示情報を示す信号であり、液晶表示装置のデータ駆動ICから液晶パネル上の画素に印加される。ロード信号は、データ駆動ICから液晶パネルへデータ信号を印加するタイミングを制御する信号である。図1に点線で示される区間は、1水平走査期間であり、Nは液晶パネル上のN番目の画素ラインにデータ信号が印加されることを意味する。例えば、ロード信号のパルスが発生すれば、該パルスに応答して、液晶表示装置のデータ駆動ICからはデータ信号が、液晶パネル上の対応するデータラインに出力される。
図1に示すように、液晶パネル上の画素に印加されるデータ信号の極性は、共通電圧Vcomに対し、2画素ライン毎に反転される。
前記のような本発明の目的、技術的構成及びその効果に関して、実施例の説明によってより明確にする。
本発明の実施例による液晶表示装置及びその駆動方法について図面を参照して詳細に説明する。
図2に示されるように、本発明による液晶表示装置は、液晶パネル10、ゲート駆動部20、データ駆動部30、電圧発生部40、及びタイミング制御部50を含む。
第1の方法は、任意のラインの画素表示のために、データ駆動部30から液晶パネル10上の各データラインにデータ信号が出力された後に、その次のラインの画素表示のためにデータ信号が出力されるとき、各データラインに提供されるデータ信号を予め設定されたレベルの電圧にバイアスするものである。これは、液晶パネル上の各データラインの電荷量を同じ値にする電荷共有方式である。このようにして、極性反転があるラインの画素にデータ信号が印加された後、極性反転がないラインの画素にデータ信号が印加されるとき、液晶パネル上の全データラインの電圧が中間レベルに変換された後に、印加されたデータ信号によって充電される。したがって、極性反転がないラインの画素においても、中間レベルから目標電圧に到達するのに遷移時間がかかるので、極性反転があるラインの画素と極性反転がないラインの画素とにおける電圧充電量の差が減少される。本発明では、各データラインの電圧を中間レベルであるグラウンド電位に変換する方法を用いているが、本発明の技術的範囲はこれに限定されるわけではない。当該分野の技術者であれば、中間レベルをデータ信号の極性毎に設定することができ、例えば、正極性の第1中間電圧と負極性の第1中間電圧が、データラインをバイアスする中間レベルとして用いられる。
図3のブロック図は、図2のデータ駆動部30を構成する各データ駆動ICの内部を詳細に示したものである。
前記データ駆動部30の各データ駆動ICは、シフトレジスタ31、デジタル/アナログ(D/A)変換部32、ラッチ33及びデータラインバイアス回路34を含む。各データ駆動ICは、液晶パネル10の所定数のデータライン毎に一つずつ割当てられている。
Claims (6)
- 複数のゲートラインと、前記ゲートラインに交差する複数のデータラインと、前記各ゲートラインとデータラインの交差点に形成された画素からなる液晶パネル、
外部のグラフィックソースから提供される画像データと同期信号を受信して、前記液晶パネルの駆動に必要な制御信号の生成及び前記画像データのフォーマット変換を行うタイミング制御部、
前記液晶パネルの駆動に必要な階調電圧及びゲート電圧を生成する電圧発生部、
前記ゲート電圧を利用して前記液晶パネルの各ゲートラインを1水平走査期間単位で順次に走査するゲート駆動部、及び、
前記液晶パネル上のデータラインに対応する、前記タイミング制御部から提供された画像データを配列し、前記画像データに合う階調電圧を選択し、前記選択された電圧を各データラインを通じて、前記走査されたゲートラインに接続された画素に印加するデータ駆動部
を含み、
前記データ駆動部は、液晶パネル上の2ライン以上の所定数の走査ライン単位で前記各データラインに印加される階調電圧の極性を反転させ、前記走査されたライン各々の画素に階調電圧を出力する前に、各データラインを所定レベルの電圧にバイアスする
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記データ駆動部は、極性反転があるラインの画素に階調電圧を印加する時間が、極性反転がないラインの画素に階調電圧を印加する時間よりも長いように制御することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記データ駆動部は、前記液晶パネル上の所定数のデータライン毎に一つずつ割当てられた複数のデータ駆動ICからなり、
前記各データ駆動ICは、
前記タイミング制御部から提供される画像データを順次にシフトさせて、前記所定数のデータラインに対応して画像データを配列するシフトレジスタ、
前記所定数のデータライン毎に配列された画像データに該当するアナログ階調電圧を選択するデジタル/アナログ変換部、
前記デジタル/アナログ変換部で選択された階調電圧を、所定の制御信号に従って前記液晶パネルに出力するラッチ部、及び
前記ラッチ部から前記液晶パネルに階調電圧が出力されるたびに、前記液晶パネル上の前記所定数のデータラインの電圧を所定レベルの電圧にバイアスするデータラインバイアス回路
を含むことを特徴とする請求項1または請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記所定レベルの電圧は、グラウンド電位であることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記所定レベルの電圧は、正極性及び負極性に対し、別途設定される所定の電圧であることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記所定の制御信号は、データ駆動部から液晶パネル上のデータラインに階調電圧を印加するタイミングを制御するロード信号であり、前記ロード信号のパルスタイミングは、前記タイミング制御部で決定されることを特徴とする請求項3に記載の液晶表示装置。
