Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, a magnetic recording medium, and a magnetic recording / reproducing apparatus.
In recent years, with respect to magnetic recording media such as hard disks used for external storage devices for computers, with the increase in the amount of stored information, there has been a demand for higher density of signals recorded per unit area. It is coming. In order to improve such a surface recording density, it is necessary to improve both or one of the linear recording density and the track recording density.
In recent years, as one effective method for improving the linear recording density, a perpendicular magnetic recording comprising a CoCr-based magnetic recording layer having magnetic anisotropy in the vertical direction of the substrate and a soft magnetic layer such as permalloy. A so-called perpendicular magnetic recording method has been proposed in which recording is performed by a single pole head using a medium.
On the other hand, as one effective method for improving the track recording density, the use of a discrete track type magnetic recording medium in which the magnetic track is magnetically separated prevents the occurrence of fringing noise during recording or reproduction. A method has been proposed.
In the former case, since there is no magnetic layer in the recess, the recorded data is magnetically separated, and a sufficient S / N ratio for positioning by the servo can be obtained, but the dry etching time for removing the magnetic layer is obtained. General mass production technology that requires a high yield because it is difficult to shorten the process time, and it is necessary to accurately remove only the necessary amount of the magnetic layer, and it is difficult to set and control conditions. As such, there is a problem that it is unsuitable.
On the other hand, in the latter case, the same medium manufacturing method as in the conventional method can be applied except that a substrate with a concavo-convex process is used. There is a problem that the separation is weak, the S / N ratio of the servo signal is small, and the head cannot be positioned sufficiently.
For this reason,
Accordingly, the present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, a magnetic recording medium, and a magnetic recording capable of manufacturing a discrete type magnetic recording medium simply and at low cost. Hereinafter, a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, a magnetic recording medium, and a magnetic recording / reproducing apparatus to which the present invention is applied will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
(Magnetic recording medium)
First, a magnetic recording medium to which the present invention is applied will be described.
FIG. 1 is a schematic sectional view showing the structure of a magnetic recording medium to which the present invention is applied.
A magnetic recording medium to which the present invention is applied is a discrete magnetic recording medium (magnetic disk) used in a magnetic recording / reproducing apparatus such as a hard disk drive (HDD) as shown in FIG. At least a
On the main surface of this magnetic recording medium,
The
The
The
Further, the thickness of the
The
The
(Method of manufacturing magnetic recording medium)
Next, a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium to which the present invention is applied will be described.
FIG. 2 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing the manufacturing process of the magnetic recording medium shown in FIG.
As shown in FIG. 2, the manufacturing method of the magnetic recording medium to which the present invention is applied is as follows. After the processing medium 1A having the
Specifically, when manufacturing the magnetic recording medium shown in FIG. 1 described above, first, as shown in FIG. 2A, a
Next, as shown in FIG. 2B, a
Next, as shown in FIG. 2C, a
Thereby, it is possible to obtain a processed medium 1Aa in which the
Next, as shown in FIG. 2D, the
As shown in FIG. 3, the
The
Then, as shown in FIG. 2 (d) described above, after the
At this time, the
When glass is used as the
Next, as shown in FIG. 2E, the
As described above, according to the present invention, it is possible to form a higher-density
By the way, as shown in FIG. 4 described above, the
Thus, when the shape of the
On the other hand, in the case of R <0.75 W, since a flat portion is formed at the
The depth of the
On the other hand, when the depth of the
The thickness of the
The heating temperature at the time of transfer is preferably not less than the above-mentioned substrate material shape maintenance temperature and less than the melting point, and by setting this range, deformation due to transfer of the
On the other hand, when the heating temperature at the time of transfer is lower than the shape maintaining temperature of the substrate material, the surface of the

In this case, since the transfer process is performed after the
In the present invention, although the film such as the
On the other hand, in the present invention, the
In this case, if the transfer process is performed before the
Furthermore, in the present invention, the

As a result of incorporating the magnetic recording medium of Comparative Example 3 in the magnetic recording / reproducing apparatus and performing recording / reproducing, it was confirmed that the magnetic head positioning operation and the data recording / reproducing operation were appropriate.
As the magnetic head, a GMR head using a GMR element on the reading side and a single pole type on the writing side was used. The head positioning signal was observed with an oscilloscope. The recording / reproducing characteristics were evaluated at a linear recording density of 960 kFCI, and an error rate of 1 × 10 −4.2 was obtained.
The head positioning and R / W characteristic (error rate) evaluation results of Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 to 3 are shown in Table 1 below. In Table 1, ◯ indicates a case where the head positioning is good, and x indicates a case where the head positioning is poor.
From the evaluation results shown in Table 1, it can be seen that in Example 1, the head can be positioned and the error rate is superior to those of Comparative Examples 1 to 3. Specifically, compared with Comparative Example 1, Example 1 obtains an error rate superior to that of Comparative Example 1 because the magnetic characteristics are not deteriorated by processing of the magnetic layer. Further, since the head positioning of the first embodiment is better than that of the second comparative example, the error rate can be measured with high accuracy. Further, in Example 1, compared with Comparative Example 3, since noise derived from the track edge is small, a better error rate can be obtained.
Next, for Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 to 3, samples with different track pitches were prepared, and the results of comparing the servo signal strength are shown in FIG. The servo signal intensity shown in FIG. 8 shows a value normalized with a medium having a track pitch of 260 nm manufactured by the method of Comparative Example 3 as 1.
Moreover, about Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1-3, the sample which changed the track pitch was produced, and the result of having compared the error rate is shown in FIG.
From the results shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, it can be seen that Example 1 can obtain a good servo signal intensity even when the track pitch is 180 nm or less, and that the error rate is hardly deteriorated even at a track pitch of 160 nm.
Next, for Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2, the throughput was calculated based on the data when 5000 magnetic recording media were produced. Note that the throughput ranged from substrate fabrication (cleaning or molding) to lubrication layer coating and then servo area formatting. The throughputs of Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 are shown in Table 2 below.
From the results shown in Table 2, it can be seen that Example 1 has better productivity than Comparative Examples 1 and 2. On the other hand, in Comparative Example 1, it takes time to process the magnetic layer, and the throughput cannot be achieved. Moreover, since the comparative example 2 requires the format of the servo area (magnetization in the reverse direction with the unevenness) after the medium is manufactured, the throughput is lowered.
Next, with respect to Example 1, a medium in which the unevenness of the unevenness is changed and the servo signal strengths are compared are shown in FIG. Note that the servo signal intensity shown in FIG. 10 shows a value normalized with a medium having a track pitch of 260 nm manufactured by the method of Comparative Example 3 as 1.
From the results shown in FIG. 10, good servo signal intensity can be obtained when the unevenness of the unevenness is in the range of 10 to 100 nm, and more preferably in the range of 50 to 100 nm. When the unevenness level difference is less than 10 nm, the servo signal strength is significantly reduced. On the other hand, when it exceeds 100 nm, the servo signal strength is increased, but the amplitude of the signal strength per track is increased. At 150 nm, the signal could not be measured with high accuracy. Further, if the thickness exceeds 180 nm, the signal itself cannot be obtained due to the contact between the head and the medium. This is considered to be a result of the head flight altitude being lowered in the servo region and the flight stability of the head being impaired. Therefore, the flight stability of the head can be ensured by setting the height difference of the unevenness to 100 nm or less.
Next, with respect to Example 1, a medium in which the unevenness of the unevenness is changed is produced, and the measurement result obtained by measuring the workability of the medium is shown in FIG. FIG. 11 shows the ratio (%) of a disk having a portion lacking in the pattern when 100 magnetic recording media of Example 1 were produced. From the results shown in FIG. 11, it can be seen that when the height difference of the unevenness exceeds 100 nm, the incidence of pattern processing defects increases.
Next, FIG. 12 shows the result of measuring the error rate of the magnetic recording medium manufactured by the manufacturing method of Example 1 using a stamper with a rounded tip at the convex portion and changing the track pitch. The error rate shown in FIG. 12 is based on the error rate when data is recorded on a specific track at 960 kFCI, and after the same data is written on the track adjacent in the radial direction, the error of the previous specific track is recorded. The rate is measured and set as a ratio to the error rate before data is recorded on the reference adjacent track.
From the measurement results shown in FIG. 12, if the tip shape of the convex portion of the stamper is 0.75 W ≦ R when the curvature radius of the curved surface of the convex portion is R and the width of the convex portion is W, the adjacent track It can be seen that there is little degradation of the error rate due to data recording. On the other hand, when 0.75 W> R, when the track pitch was narrowed, the error rate was significantly deteriorated due to data recording on the adjacent track due to the fringe.
Next, for Example 1, media in which the remaining thickness of the
The error rate shown in FIG. 13 is based on the error rate when data is recorded on a specific track at 960 kFCI, and after the data is similarly written on the track adjacent in the radial direction, the error rate of the previous specific track And the ratio to the error rate before recording data on the adjacent track as a reference.
Further, the remaining thickness of the
From the results shown in FIG. 13, it can be seen that the deterioration of the error rate due to fringing is reduced by setting the remaining thickness of the
Next, Table 3 shows the measurement results of the stamper life. Table 3 shows the number of sheets produced when the same stamper was used and the shape of the concave portion of the pattern formed on the magnetic recording medium was deformed by 10% from the initial shape. Note that the upper limit of the number of manufactured sheets is 5000, and portions where no numerical value is entered indicate that no shape deterioration was observed.
From the measurement results shown in Table 3, it is sufficient that the tip shape of the convex portion of the stamper is R ≦ 1.25 W when the curvature radius of the curved surface of the convex portion is R and the width of the convex portion is W. It can be seen that it has a lifetime. On the other hand, when R> 1.25W, the life is shortened due to the deterioration of the tip shape.
