Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device used in a portable device such as a watch, a mobile phone, an audio, and a portable electronic device.
In recent years, liquid crystal display elements having a thin and light feature have been widely used in portable devices and the like. In particular, since display elements used in mobile phones are required to be small and light, liquid crystal display elements are used in most mobile phones. However, since the liquid crystal display element is a light receiving type, there is a problem in visibility in a dark place required for a mobile phone. Therefore, an illuminating device is often installed on the front or back surface of the liquid crystal display element. In general, the former lighting device is called a front light, and the latter is called a backlight.
FIG. 5 schematically shows a cross section of a front light type display device. As illustrated, the front light includes a
However, in the liquid crystal display device using the light guide sheet (columnar lens sheet) of
In addition, many portable devices often view images displayed on a liquid crystal display device from an oblique viewing angle, and the conventional liquid crystal display device that irradiates diffused light almost directly above the liquid crystal display device has poor visibility. Had the problem of becoming.
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, it is composed of a plurality of columnar lenses that are oriented on the outside of the polarizing plate disposed on the liquid crystal panel so as to be inclined in the viewing angle direction with reference to the direction of the perpendicular standing on the surface of the columnar lens sheet. In addition, it is possible to efficiently scatter light from the lighting device in the viewing angle direction by arranging the columnar lens sheet, and even with the liquid crystal display device of the present invention in a portable device, it is possible to display a bright image with good visibility. It can be.
Further, even when a front light is used as the lighting device, it is possible to obtain a bright image display with good visibility.
That is, the liquid crystal display device of the present invention is refracted from a liquid crystal display element having a liquid crystal panel in which a liquid crystal layer is disposed between substrates facing each other, a polarizing plate provided at least on the display observation surface side, and a surrounding region. A plurality of columnar lenses in which high-rate regions are continuously formed in the thickness direction are arranged in a plane, and the columnar lens has a function of guiding light in the thickness direction. The columnar lens is a surface of the columnar lens sheet. It is inclined in the viewing angle direction with reference to the direction of the perpendicular line.
Furthermore, the inclination angle of the columnar lens was set to 10 to 45 degrees with respect to a perpendicular line standing on the surface of the columnar lens sheet. Here, the liquid crystal display element includes a pair of polarizing plates provided so as to sandwich the liquid crystal panel and a reflection plate provided behind the polarizing plate, and the columnar lens sheet is disposed outside the display observation surface of the liquid crystal display element. Is provided. Alternatively, the liquid crystal display element is provided behind the first polarizing plate provided on the display observation surface side of the liquid crystal panel, the second polarizing plate provided on the back side of the liquid crystal panel, and the second polarizing plate. The columnar lens sheet is provided between the second polarizing plate and the reflecting plate. Alternatively, the liquid crystal panel is a reflective liquid crystal panel having a reflective layer on the inner surface, and a columnar lens sheet is provided outside the display observation surface of the liquid crystal display element. Further, a front light type illumination device that irradiates light to the liquid crystal panel from the display observation surface side is provided.
According to the present invention, a thin and lightweight liquid crystal display device having good luminance and visibility can be provided, so that not only the display quality of the liquid crystal display device is improved, but also the thin and light weight of the liquid crystal display device can be realized. It has the effect.
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view schematically showing an example of the configuration of a liquid crystal display device according to the present invention. The liquid crystal display device shown in FIG. 1 includes a
The columnar lens sheet 2 has a configuration in which a plurality of minute columnar regions are arranged in a plane. The columnar region is formed with a higher refractive index than the outer peripheral region surrounding it. Therefore, the columnar lens sheet has a function of guiding light in the thickness direction. Here, a columnar region having a higher refractive index than the surroundings is referred to as a columnar lens. That is, a graded index columnar lens whose refractive index continuously increases toward the center, or a step index having a two-layer structure in which the refractive index of the central portion is higher than the refractive index of the outer peripheral region surrounding it. It has a film structure in which a plurality of mold columnar lenses are arranged in a plane.
FIG. 7 schematically shows the structure of the columnar lens sheet. FIG. 7A is a schematic cross-sectional view of a columnar lens sheet. As shown in the drawing, in the columnar lens sheet, columnar high
In both the graded index columnar lens and the step index columnar lens, the direction of the optical axis of the columnar lens constituting them is referred to as the orientation direction of the columnar lens. The columnar lens sheet 2 used in the present invention is formed so that the orientation direction of the columnar lens is inclined with reference to the direction of the perpendicular line standing on the surface of the columnar lens sheet. If the angle formed by the orientation direction with respect to the direction of the perpendicular line standing on the surface of the columnar lens sheet is called an inclination angle, the inclination angle is in the range of 10 to 45 degrees.
At this time, as shown in FIG. 7A, the light 22 entering from the direction opposite to the orientation direction of the columnar lens is linearly transmitted through the columnar lens sheet. On the other hand, the light 23 that has entered from the orientation direction of the columnar lens is guided through the columnar lens and scattered and emitted. In this way, the incident angle of light scattered and emitted is a predetermined angle depending on the refractive index distribution method of the columnar lens, the refractive index difference between the high refractive index region and the low refractive index region, the thickness of the columnar lens sheet, etc. Determined by the range. Here, the incident angle of light scattered and emitted is referred to as a scattering incident angle. In addition, the incident angle of light that is linearly transmitted through the columnar lens sheet is referred to as a linear transmission angle. The scattering incident angle of the columnar lens sheet can have an arbitrary value of ± 10 to 45 degrees with respect to the optical axis of the columnar lens.
FIG. 7B shows a schematic plan view of the columnar lens sheet. As shown in the figure, the columnar lens sheet has a high
Returning to FIG. 1 again, the columnar lens sheet 2 may be disposed by being bonded to the first polarizing plate 3a by a bonding layer (not shown) or may be disposed without being bonded. As the bonding layer, an ordinary optical adhesive layer such as an epoxy adhesive or an acrylic adhesive may be used, but it is easy to use an ordinary film adhesive.
In FIG. 1, incident light 13 incident from an illumination device such as an external environment or a front light is obliquely incident on a liquid crystal display device as shown. Since the orientation direction of the columnar lens sheet 2 is formed so as to be inclined in the direction of the viewpoint with respect to a perpendicular line standing on the columnar lens sheet, incident light incident from the opposite side enters the columnar lens sheet 2 at a linear transmission angle. Will be transmitted linearly. Then, after sequentially passing through the first polarizing plate 3 a, the
As described above, the tilt angle can be arbitrarily set to 10 to 45 degrees and the scattering incident angle can be set to an angle of ± 10 to 45 degrees. Therefore, by adjusting the tilt angle to the viewpoint, a liquid crystal display device with the brightest viewpoint direction can be configured. Also, the more the columnar lens sheet having a smaller scattering incident angle is used, the higher the directivity of the emitted light, and a bright liquid crystal display device can be obtained.
Next, FIG. 2 shows a liquid crystal display device having a configuration in which the columnar lens sheet 2 is disposed between the second polarizing plate 3 b and the reflection plate 4. Since the operation is the same as that shown in FIG. 1, the description thereof is omitted, but with such a configuration, a bright image display can be obtained at an easy-to-see viewpoint position. As shown in the figure, when a columnar lens sheet is disposed behind the second polarizing plate 3b, the light incident on the
As the columnar lens sheet, a columnar lens array sheet having a lens diameter of 0.2 to 250 μm and a lens height (columnar lens sheet layer thickness) of 10 to 200 μm can be used. However, considering the production yield, light utilization efficiency, ease of handling, etc., it is preferable that the lens diameter is 0.5 μm to 100 μm and the lens height is 20 μm to 80 μm. In addition, a columnar lens having a refractive index difference of 0.01 to 0.05 can be used. Further, the tilt angle of the columnar lens can be 10 to 70 degrees, but it is preferable to use the tilt angle of 10 to 45 degrees because a bright image can be obtained at an angle that is easier to see.
Next, FIG. 3 schematically shows a configuration using a liquid crystal panel having an internal reflection layer inside. In such a configuration, the second polarizing plate is not necessary, and the configuration is simplified. Further, by using such a liquid crystal panel, blurring of an image due to parallax is eliminated, and a clearer image can be displayed. As the internal reflection layer 5, a metal electrode can be used as a drive electrode formed on the lower substrate of the
Next, FIG. 4 schematically shows a configuration when the front light is used in the lighting device. The front light 6 has a function of irradiating the
In the liquid crystal display device having such a configuration, the columnar lens sheet 2 is disposed between the front light 6 and the first polarizing plate 3a. The illumination light from the front light 6 is obliquely incident on the columnar lens sheet 2 at an angle opposite to the viewpoint 11, so that it passes through the columnar lens sheet 2 and reaches the
FIG. 8 shows the light transmission characteristics of the columnar lens sheet used in the present invention. In FIG. 8, the horizontal axis represents the incident angle of light on the columnar lens sheet, and the vertical axis represents the light transmission intensity. In the figure, a
In the case of the
On the other hand, the
Examples of the present invention will be specifically described below.
液晶パネルとしては、単純マトリックス型のSTN(Super−Twisted−Nematic)液晶パネルを用いた。
A liquid crystal display device of the present invention having the configuration shown in FIG. 1 was produced. As a columnar lens sheet, a graded index type with a scattering incident angle of 30 degrees and a tilt angle of 0 degrees is used as a comparative sample, and a graded index type having a scattering incident angle of 30 degrees and a tilt angle of 15 degrees. A sample in which columnar lenses were uniformly arranged was used as this sample. The thickness of the columnar lens sheet was 70 μm, and the columnar lens diameter was 30 μm. A simple matrix STN (Super-Twisted-Nematic) liquid crystal panel was used as the liquid crystal panel. FIG. 9 shows the luminance measured by changing the incident angle of the illumination light from the illumination light source while fixing the photodetector by tilting 15 degrees in the alignment direction of the columnar lens from directly above the manufactured liquid crystal display device. In FIG. 9, the result for this sample is represented by a
For this sample, an incident angle of 15 degrees corresponds to the case where the incident angle of the illumination light coincides with the alignment direction of the columnar lens, and an incident angle of -15 degrees corresponds to the case where the illumination light is incident at a symmetrical position. . As can be seen from this result, it can be seen that there are two luminance peaks at incident angles of -15 degrees and 15 degrees. The peak when the incident angle is -15 degrees is a peak generated because the light incident on the columnar lens sheet is scattered and incident on the liquid crystal panel side, and the peak when the incident angle is 15 degrees returns from the liquid crystal panel side to the columnar lens sheet. This is a peak caused by scattered light being scattered and emitted. For this sample, it was found that the luminance when the columnar lens orientation direction of the columnar lens sheet was directed to the detector side was improved by about 4 times compared to the case where the columnar lens was disposed in the opposite direction.
In addition, the brightness of the comparative sample was highest when irradiated with light from directly above, but only about half the brightness of the maximum peak of this sample was obtained. Furthermore, it was found that the brightness in the vicinity of the maximum peak of this sample was improved in a wider angle range than in the vicinity of the maximum peak of the comparative sample.
From this result, it was found that a brighter and wider display is possible by aligning the orientation direction of the columnar lens of the columnar lens sheet with the direction of the viewpoint in the configuration of FIG.
In the arrangement shown in FIG. 2, the same measurement as shown in Example 1 was performed. A prism sheet was not used. As a result, in the case of the comparative sample and the case of the present sample, the luminance was reduced by about 20% as a whole as compared with the result obtained in Example 1, but the same result was obtained, and the columnar shape was obtained in the configuration of FIG. It was found that a brighter and wider display is possible by aligning the orientation direction of the columnar lenses of the lens sheet with the direction of the viewpoint.
A liquid crystal display device having the configuration shown in FIG. 4 was produced. As the liquid crystal panel, a reflective TFT (Thin-Film-Transistor) liquid crystal panel using a Cr electrode as an internal reflection layer was used. As the columnar lens sheet, those having an inclination angle of 0 degree, 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees were used.
FIG. 10 shows the result of measuring the luminance by changing the angle of the measuring instrument at a position 50 cm away from the constructed liquid crystal display device. FIG. 10 shows luminance curves 34, 35, 36, 37, and 38 when columnar lens sheets having inclination angles of 0 degrees, 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees are used, respectively. In any case, it can be seen that the luminance is higher when the tilt angle is given than when the columnar lens sheet is vertically oriented.
It can also be seen that all of the columnar lens sheets with an inclination angle have a peak at a position corresponding to the measurement angle of 0 degree and the inclination angle. The peak at the position corresponding to the tilt angle is due to the scattered light component, but the peak at the measurement angle of 0 degree is considered to be a peak due to the linear transmission component. When a columnar lens sheet having an inclination angle of 15 degrees is used, it can be seen that the peak at the position of 0 degree in 35 includes both a linear transmission component and a scattering component.
From the results shown in FIG. 10, it can be seen that a sufficiently high luminance can be obtained by using a columnar lens sheet having an inclination angle of 15 to 45 degrees, and a wide viewing angle because of having a sufficient scattered light component. It can be seen that a liquid crystal display device can be obtained. Further, even when the inclination angle is 45 degrees or more, higher luminance can be obtained than in the case of using a vertically aligned columnar lens sheet, but since the angle of the luminance peak is increased, the light utilization efficiency reaching the viewpoint is lowered. Further, it has been found that the effects shown in this example can be obtained by using a columnar lens sheet having an inclination angle of 10 degrees. From the above results, it was found that the inclination angle of the columnar lens sheet is preferably 10 to 45 degrees.
