Description
The present invention relates to a line liquid crystal optical shutter array, a liquid crystal printer head, and the like.
Conventional optical shutters using liquid crystals are disclosed in, for example,
The liquid crystal optical shutter disclosed in
The liquid crystal optical shutter disclosed in
In the initial state where no voltage is applied to any of the two liquid crystal layers (state 1), linearly polarized light incident on the first liquid crystal layer via the polarizing plate on the first liquid crystal layer side is converted to elliptically polarized light. The elliptically polarized light emitted from the first liquid crystal layer and incident on the second liquid crystal layer is converted into linearly polarized light and emitted from the second liquid crystal layer. The polarization direction of the linearly polarized light emitted from the second liquid crystal layer is the same as the polarization direction of the linearly polarized light when incident on the first liquid crystal layer. Since the transmission axes of the pair of polarizing plates are arranged so as to be orthogonal to each other, the linearly polarized light that has passed through the second liquid crystal layer is absorbed by the polarizing plate on the second liquid crystal layer side. Therefore, light does not transmit in state 1 (CLOSE state 1).
When a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer along the direction of the electric field, so that outgoing light having the same polarization state as the incident light can be obtained.
When a sufficient voltage is applied to only one of the two liquid crystal layers (second liquid crystal layer) (state 2), the linearly polarized light incident on the first liquid crystal layer to which no voltage is applied is converted into elliptically polarized light and second The light enters the liquid crystal layer and the elliptically polarized light having the same polarization state as the elliptically polarized light is emitted from the second liquid crystal layer. Since the elliptically polarized light emitted from the second liquid crystal layer is transmitted through the polarizing plate on the second liquid crystal layer side, light is transmitted in state 2 (OPEN state).
When a sufficient voltage is applied to both of the two liquid crystal layers (state 3), the same linearly polarized light as the linearly polarized light incident on the first liquid crystal layer is emitted from the second liquid crystal layer. Since the transmission axes of the pair of polarizing plates are arranged so as to be orthogonal to each other, the linearly polarized light that has passed through the second liquid crystal layer is absorbed by the polarizing plate on the second liquid crystal layer side. Therefore, in
However, in the optical shutter of

The phase difference control element 16 further includes, for example, a drive circuit 40, and each of the first
In the liquid crystal
Since the 90 ° twisted TN liquid crystal can switch the polarization direction of light in two directions orthogonal to each other according to the applied voltage HIGH / LOW, the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer whose twist directions are opposite to each other. When the predetermined polarized light is passed through the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer in this order, light having the same polarization state as that of the incident light with respect to the first liquid crystal layer is transmitted from the second liquid crystal layer. Can be emitted.

Hereinafter, an example of the operation of the liquid crystal
As described above, in the liquid crystal
As shown in FIG. 4, the polarization state when passing through the first
Here, in the case where the polarization plane of the light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer can take two states that differ by 90 ° due to the voltage HIGH / LOW applied to the liquid crystal layer, a HIGH voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, and a predetermined straight line When the polarized light can be emitted, it is referred to as “the liquid crystal layer (or liquid crystal cell) is in an on state”. Then, when a voltage sufficiently smaller than the magnitude (absolute value) of the voltage necessary to bring the liquid crystal layer into the “on state” is applied to the liquid crystal layer, and as a result, the liquid crystal layer is in the “on state” When light having a plane of polarization substantially orthogonal to the plane of polarization of the emitted light obtained is emitted from the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystal layer (or liquid crystal cell) is said to be in the off state.
In order to put the liquid crystal layer in the “off state”, the magnitude of the voltage (LOW) applied to the liquid crystal layer may be set to zero. However, when the liquid crystal layer is set to the “off state”, a voltage (offset voltage) having a non-zero value (for example, 2.5 volts) may be applied.
The applied voltage “HIGH” used in the present specification is a voltage that can turn the liquid crystal layer “on”, and the applied voltage “LOW” is a voltage that can turn the liquid crystal layer “off”. It is. When a TN liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy Δε is used, the “on-state” liquid crystal aligns the liquid crystal molecules in the direction of the electric field, and the “off-state” liquid crystal is twisted by about 90 °. It is in. On the other hand, when a TN liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy Δε is used, the “on-state” liquid crystal is twisted by about 90 °, and the “off-state” liquid crystal aligns liquid crystal molecules in one direction. I am letting. In the present specification, the invention will be described centering on the case where a liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy Δε is used, but the present invention can also be realized using a liquid crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy Δε.
In addition, the liquid crystal layer that can be emitted as linearly polarized light substantially orthogonal to each other according to the applied voltage can be used, for example, an ECB mode liquid crystal layer or an OCB mode liquid crystal layer. Further, a retardation plate may be combined.

As shown in FIG. 4D, for example, the voltage applied to the first

The linearly polarized light in the vertical direction that has passed through the second
Hereinafter, the
In the
The response speed to this voltage application can be evaluated, for example, by arranging a pair of orthogonally arranged polarizers before and after the liquid crystal layer and measuring the temporal change in light transmittance. The time from when the HIGH voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer in the off state to when the liquid crystal layer reaches the on state is referred to as “rising response time τr of the liquid crystal layer”, and the LOW voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer in the on state. The time from when the liquid crystal layer reaches the OFF state is referred to as “liquid crystal layer fall response time τd”. The rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer is relatively short, but the fall response time τd of the liquid crystal layer is relatively long.
In
Even if the period of state 4 (FIG. 4 (d)), that is, the time (τd) required for the transition from state 3 (FIG. 4 (c)) to the state (FIG. 4 (a)) is long, such During the transition period, linearly polarized light can be continuously emitted from the second liquid crystal layer 30a. At this time, since the direction of polarized light emitted from the second liquid crystal layer 30a does not rotate, the falling response time τd of the liquid crystal layer has no influence on the rotation of the polarization plane (the electric field vector oscillation plane of the incident linearly polarized light).
On the other hand, when the state changes from the state 1 (FIG. 4A) to the state 2 (FIG. 4B) and from the state 2 (FIG. 2B) to the state 3 (FIG. 4C). When changing, the plane of polarization rotates 90 °. Since the speed of these state changes is determined by the rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer, it is relatively fast.

FIG. 6A shows a waveform of a voltage applied commonly to the first liquid crystal regions 520a1 and 520a2 of the row phase
Hereinafter, the voltage applied to the first liquid crystal regions 520a1, 520a2 of the first
As shown in FIG. 6A, the voltage applied to the

Hereinafter, the first row phase
Hereinafter, the operation of the line liquid crystal
In the initial state, the applied voltage to the
Next, as shown in FIG. 6A, the voltage applied to the
On the other hand, since the applied voltage to all the
Next, within a period in which the applied voltage to the
For example, as shown in FIG. 6B, after a time T2_1 from the time of STEP1, the voltage applied to the segment electrode 532a1 is changed from LOW to HIGH (STEP2_1), so that the liquid crystal region 530a1 is changed from the OFF state to the ON state. .
Further, as shown in FIG. 6C, the voltage applied to the segment electrode 532a2 adjacent to the segment electrode 532a1 is changed from LOW to HIGH after a time T2_2 from the time of STEP1 (STEP2_2), thereby adjacent to the liquid crystal region 530a1. The liquid crystal region 530a2 to be turned is turned from the off state to the on state.
Further, as shown in FIG. 6D, the voltage applied to the segment electrode 532a3 adjacent to the
As described above, by setting the applied voltage to each
The time from when the applied voltage applied to the liquid crystal region is changed from LOW to HIGH until the liquid crystal region is changed from the OFF state to the ON state is relatively fast because it is determined by the rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer. Therefore, the OPEN times of the liquid crystal light shutter portions corresponding to the segment electrodes 532a1, 532a2, and 532a3 are substantially equal to T2_1, T2_2, and T2_3.
By adjusting the timing at which the voltage applied to the
In the example shown in FIG. 6, the time during which the liquid crystal light shutter unit can transmit light can be changed from zero to the maximum time T1. Thus, by controlling the voltage applied to each electrode as described above, the amount of light transmitted through each liquid crystal light shutter unit can be arbitrarily controlled.
Here, T1 is set to be equal to or greater than the sum of the maximum exposure time and the rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer. From the viewpoint of minimizing the operation time, it is preferable to set T1 to be equal to the sum of the maximum exposure time and the rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer. T3 is set longer than the fall time Td of the liquid crystal layer. In addition, when the liquid crystal optical shutter units are opened (time T2_1, T2_2 and T2_3 from the time of STEP1), for example, when used as a printer head, according to image information (character information) to be printed, It is set so that the amount of light to expose the photosensitive paper (printing paper) can be obtained. At this time, parameters such as the exposure sensitivity of the photographic paper, the intensity of light to be exposed, and the transmittance of the liquid crystal light shutter are taken into consideration.
Next, the voltage applied to the
As described above, the time until the liquid crystal layer in the on state completely reaches the off state is determined by the fall response time τd of the liquid crystal layer, and τd is later than the rise response time τr of the liquid crystal layer. Further, it cannot function as a liquid crystal light shutter until the liquid crystal layer is completely turned off.
After the transition period during which the liquid crystal layer changes from the on-state to the off-state, after the first and second liquid crystal regions of the first row phase
In addition to the first row liquid crystal optical shutters 501ah, 501bh,... (Corresponding to the first row phase difference control element 501), the line liquid crystal
That is, by simultaneously changing the applied voltage to the first and second liquid crystal regions included in the phase difference control element unit of the first row phase
Hereinafter, the operation of the line liquid crystal
As shown in FIG. 7, in the line liquid crystal
When the first row phase
Therefore, the optical shutter can be changed to the OPEN state by changing the other second row phase
More specifically, as shown in FIG. 6, a voltage is applied to the plurality of phase difference
Although the optical shutter remains in the CLOSE state, the second row phase
As described above, in the liquid crystal
The line liquid crystal optical shutter array of this embodiment may include three or more row phase difference control elements.

A liquid crystal printer can be configured using the liquid crystal

The line liquid crystal
As described above, the line liquid crystal
Therefore, the time for the
The line liquid crystal
Next, an example of the operation of the
First, after the R color light source of the
After a predetermined exposure time has elapsed, the first row liquid crystal light shutter is closed. That is, while maintaining the one liquid crystal region in the on state in the on state and changing the other liquid crystal region from the off state to the on state, both the one liquid crystal region and the other liquid crystal region are both in the on state. By setting (FIG. 4C), the shutter is brought into the CLOSE state.
After setting the shutter to the CLOSE state, the R color light source is turned off. Further, a LOW voltage that turns off each of the one and the other liquid crystal regions that are both turned on is simultaneously applied to transition from
Through the series of operations described above, red information for one line is printed in a direction substantially perpendicular to the moving direction of the photographic paper 603 (direction A in FIG. 8). Since the second row liquid crystal light shutter is closed during the lighting period of the R color light source, as described above, even if the first row liquid crystal light shutter and the second row liquid crystal light shutter are both irradiated with the R color light. However, the first color liquid crystal light shutter may be selectively irradiated with R color light. In addition, if the liquid crystal light shutter row to be irradiated for each color light is selectively changed, it is possible to eliminate the need to control the turning on / off of the color light source.

Next, the first liquid crystal layer (or the first liquid crystal cell) and the second liquid crystal layer (or the second liquid crystal cell) included in each of the row phase difference control elements of the line liquid crystal
When the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer are TN liquid crystals, the polarization state of incident light with respect to the first liquid crystal layer when predetermined polarization is passed through the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer in this order. In order for light having the same polarization state to be emitted from the second liquid crystal layer, that is, for the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell to cancel each other in retardation (refractive index anisotropy), the following conditions must be satisfied: That's fine.
Regarding the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell other than the twist angle (twist angle) determined by, for example, the alignment film and the natural chiral pitch length of the liquid crystal (for example, the film thickness of the liquid crystal layer and the tilt angle of the liquid crystal with respect to the alignment film) Are subject to equal construction. In addition, it is a condition that the twist angles (twist angles) of the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer are opposite to each other. Furthermore, the absolute value of the natural chiral pitch length of the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer is the same, but the temperature dependence (dP / dT) of the pitch is opposite (positive and negative). .
However, when the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell are actually manufactured so as to satisfy all of the above conditions, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, the twist angle of the liquid crystal layer, the tilt angle of the liquid crystal with respect to the alignment film, and the first liquid crystal An error occurs in various configuration parameters of the liquid crystal cell such as the overlay accuracy of the layer and the second liquid crystal layer, and mismatch occurs between the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell.

As shown in FIG. 10 (a), in the initial state before time t0, no voltage is applied to either the first liquid crystal cell or the second liquid crystal cell, so the

As described above, as shown in FIGS. 10 to 16, if the first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell are manufactured so as to satisfy the above inequalities (1) to (5), the amount of leakage light in the
As described above, the liquid crystal optical shutter of the present invention is suitably used for a liquid crystal printer. If the intensity (illuminance) of light applied to the photographic paper can be maintained below the minimum intensity (threshold value) to which the photographic paper is exposed, the print quality is not adversely affected. Conversely, if light having an intensity of about 100 times the minimum intensity is used, the photographic paper can be exposed in a sufficiently short time. Therefore, the liquid crystal optical shutter capable of maintaining the transmittance in the closed state at 1% or less is suitably used for the application of the liquid crystal printer.
In the above description, the case where the row phase difference control element has two liquid crystal cells including a liquid crystal layer and a substrate having electrodes has been described. However, the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer having a predetermined relationship are provided. If so, the configuration of the row phase difference control element is not limited to this.
In the above description, the case where the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer are TN mode liquid crystal layers is exemplified, but the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer may be ECB mode liquid crystal layers. Since the response time to voltage is faster than that of the TN mode liquid crystal layer, a higher speed optical shutter can be manufactured. The first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer may be OCB mode liquid crystal layers. The OCB mode liquid crystal layer has a faster response time to voltage than the ECB mode liquid crystal layer. The alignment directions of the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer are set to be orthogonal to each other, for example.
The liquid crystal optical shutter array of the present invention is widely applicable to liquid crystal printers capable of full color printing.
