Description
表示の観察側の前面とその反対側の後面とにそれぞれ前側偏光板と後側偏光板とが配置され、光の透過を制御する複数の画素が行及び列方向に配列された画面エリアを有し、前記複数の画素に画像データが書込まれ、その画像データに応じた画像を表示する液晶表示素子と、
前記液晶表示素子の後側に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の画面エリアの全域に向けて、前記液晶表示素子の後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に直交する偏光面をもった直線偏光からなる第1の照明光と、前記後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に平行な偏光面をもった直線偏光からなる第2の照明光とを選択的に照射する面光源と、
前記面光源と前記液晶表示素子との間に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の画面エリアを選択された複数行の画素に対応する第1の画面領域と、その他の行の画素に対応する第2の画面領域とに区分したいずれか一方の画面領域に向かう前記第1の照明光と前記第2の照明光の偏光面を実質的に90°回転させる偏光制御素子と、
1画面の画像を表示するための1フレーム毎に、前記液晶表示素子の複数の画素に行毎に順次画像データを書込み、前記第1の画面領域の各行の画素へ前記画像データを書込む期間に、前記面光源から前記第1と第2の照明光の一方を照射させ、前記第2の画面領域の各行の画素へ前記画像データを書込む期間に、前記面光源から前記第1と第2の照明光の他方を照射させる駆動手段と、
を備えることを特徴とする。
Claims (5)
- 表示の観察側の前面とその反対側の後面とにそれぞれ前側偏光板と後側偏光板とが配置され、光の透過を制御する複数の画素が行及び列方向に配列された画面エリアを有し、前記複数の画素に画像データが書込まれ、その画像データに応じた画像を表示する液晶表示素子と、
前記液晶表示素子の後側に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の画面エリアの全域に向けて、前記液晶表示素子の後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に直交する偏光面をもった直線偏光からなる第1の照明光と、前記後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に平行な偏光面をもった直線偏光からなる第2の照明光とを選択的に照射する面光源と、
前記面光源と前記液晶表示素子との間に配置され、前記液晶表示素子の画面エリアを選択された複数行の画素に対応する第1の画面領域と、その他の行の画素に対応する第2の画面領域とに区分したいずれか一方の画面領域に向かう前記第1の照明光と前記第2の照明光の偏光面を実質的に90°回転させる偏光制御素子と、
1画面の画像を表示するための1フレーム毎に、前記液晶表示素子の複数の画素に行毎に順次画像データを書込み、前記第1の画面領域の各行の画素へ前記画像データを書込む期間に、前記面光源から前記第1と第2の照明光の一方を照射させ、前記第2の画面領域の各行の画素へ前記画像データを書込む期間に、前記面光源から前記第1と第2の照明光の他方を照射させる駆動手段と、
を備えることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記偏光制御素子は、前記第1の画面領域と前記第2の画面領域とのいずれか一方に対応する領域に配置され、前記面光源からの前記第1と第2の照明光の偏光面に対してそれぞれ実質的に45°の角度方向に遅相軸を有し、透過光の常光と異常光との間に1/2波長の位相差を与えるλ/2位相差膜からなっていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記偏光制御素子は、前記液晶表示素子の画面エリアの全域に対応する透明フィルムと、この透明フィルムの前記第1と第2の画面領域のいずれか一方に対応する部分に、直線偏光からなる前記第1、第2の照明光の偏光面を実質的に90°回転させる偏光制御膜とから形成された光学フィルムからなっていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記面光源は、前記液晶表示素子に対応する領域の少なくとも一端に、前記液晶表示素子の法線方向に対して実質的に直交する方向から光を入射させるための入射部を有し、前記液晶表示素子に対応する領域に、前記入射部から入射した光を前記液晶表示素子に向けて反射する反射面が形成された導光手段と、前記導光手段の入射部に対向させて配置され、選択的に点灯される第1と第2の発光素子と、前記液晶表示素子の後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に直交する透過軸を有し、前記第1の発光素子と前記導光手段の入射部との間に配置された第1の偏光素子と、前記液晶表示素子の後側偏光板の透過軸と実質的に平行な透過軸を有し、前記第2の発光素子と前記導光手段の入射部との間に配置された第2の偏光素子とを備えていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記面光源は、前記第1の発光素子及びそれに対応する前記第1の偏光素子と、前記第2の発光素子及びそれに対応する前記第2の偏光素子との間を仕切る遮光板をさらに備えていることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の液晶表示装置。
