【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、電気泳動現象を利用した電気泳動表示装置、電気泳動表示装置の製造方法、電子機器、マイクロカプセル、マイクロカプセルの製造方法に関する。

【従来の技術】
電気泳動現象とは、帯電粒子が、電界によって受ける力を駆動力として、自身の有する電荷とは逆極性を有する電極側に泳動する現象である。
このような現象を利用した電気泳動表示装置(電気泳動ディスプレイEPD:Electrophoretic Display)は、構成の簡便さ、広視野角、低消費電力、並びに表示画像保持性能(以下、メモリー性と称す)などの利点により、新しいディスプレイに好適な電気光学装置として注目されている。

上記電気泳動表示装置の一例として、帯電粒子と分散媒とからなる電気泳動分散液を複数のマイクロカプセルに封入し、このマイクロカプセルを一対の基板間に収容してなるマイクロカプセル型電気泳動ディスプレイが知られている。ここで、このマイクロカプセル型電気泳動ディスプレイを構成するマイクロカプセルとしては、例えば、ゼラチンなどを含むポリカチオン性材料と、アラビアゴムなどを含むポリアニオン性材料との混合物からなる一層構造を有するものが広く知られている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、上記マイクロカプセル型電気泳動ディスプレイにおいては、ディスプレイの製造過程において、基板にコーティング (塗布)或いはラミネート (圧着)を行う際に、マイクロカプセルを構成する膜の強度が十分でないことなどにより、マイクロカプセルの一部が破壊され、マイクロカプセルに内包された電気泳動分散液が漏れだしてしまうということがあった。

また、良好なメモリー性を得るために、一般に用いられるマイクロカプセルの構成材料としてゼラチンなどは、生分解性であるため、微生物により分解されてしまうということがあった。そこで、本発明は、上記事情に鑑みてなされたものであり、良好なメモリー性を確保しつつ、良好な強度及び低生分解性を有するマイクロカプセルを利用して優れた電気泳動表示装置、電気泳動表示装置の製造方法を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
このような課題を解決するために、本発明の電気泳動表示装置は、帯電粒子を内包させた複数のマイクロカプセルを備えてなる電気泳動表示装置において、前記マイクロカプセルが、内層がポリカチオン性材料とポリアニオン性材料との混合物からなり、外層が、水溶性樹脂からなる多層構造から構成されていることを特徴としている。

本発明の電気泳動表示装置における内層と外層とは、少なくとも外層が内層の外側に積層されているのであれば、この内層と外層との間に他の層が介層されていても構わない。

ここで、本発明の電気泳動表示装置において、内層を構成するポリカチオン性材料とポリアニオン性材料との混合物としては、その組成比X(=ポリカチオン性材料/ポリアニオン性材料)が、X=1.00である混合物や、0.25≦X<1.00、或いは、1.00<X≦4.00の範囲である混合物などから構成することができる。

また、外層を構成する水溶性樹脂としては、ホルマリンレゾルシノール樹脂、ポリビニルアルコール、ポリウレタン樹脂、アクリル酸樹脂、ポリメチルーγ−メチル−L−グルタメート、メラミン、メタクリル酸樹脂、ホルムアルデヒド樹脂、ポリビニルピロリドン樹脂、フッ素系樹脂から選択することができる。また、外層を構成する水溶性樹脂として、ポリビニルベンジルジメチル−n−オクチルアンモニウムクロリド、ポリ−2−メタクリロキシエチルジメチル−n−ヘキサデシルアンモニウムクロリドから選択される一種或いはこれらの共重合物から構成することもできる。

また、本発明の電気泳動表示装置において、ポリカチオン性材料として、ゼラチンを含むものを使用するようにしてもよい。さらに、本発明の電気泳動表示装置において、ポリアニオン性材料として、アラビアゴム、アルギン酸ナトリウム、カラギーナン、カルボキシメチルセルロース、寒天、ポリビニルベンゼンスルホン酸、ポリビニルエーテル無水マレイン酸から選択された少なくとも一つの化合物を含むものを使用するようにしてもよい。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の一実施の形態について、図面を参照して説明する。
( 第一実施形態)
図1は、本発明の電気泳動表示装置の一例として、電気泳動パネルを示す断面図である。なお、図1における電気泳動パネルは、一画素分を示している。

電気泳動パネル(電気泳動表示装置)10は、図1に示すように、透明基板1と、この透明基板1に対向配置される対向基板6との間に、帯電粒子4aと分散媒4bとからなる電気泳動分散液4を内包する構造体として機能するマイクロカプセル3がバインダー5によって封入された構成をしており、透明基板1の内側(図1における下面側)には透明電極2が形成され、対向基板6の内側(図1における上面側)には対向電極7が形成されている。この電気泳動パネル10は、透明基板1側が表示面となっており、帯電粒子4aは、正極性に帯電させている。

透明基板1及び対向基板6は、ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)やポリエーテルサリフォン(PES)などの樹脂フィルム、或いはガラス、石英などの無機材料から形成される。ここで、少なくとも表示面側の透明基板1は、光透過性を有するものを用いるようにする。
透明電極2及び対向電極7は、いずれも、金属材料としてAl、Au、Pt、Ag、Ni、Ti、Crなどを用いることができ、少なくとも表示面側の透明電極2は、ITO(Indium Tin Oxide)、ZnO、SnO2 などの金属酸化物透明材料を用いるようにする。

帯電粒子4aは、絶縁性の分散媒4b中で帯電しうる材料が用いられ、本質的に正か負かのいずれかに帯電させている。この帯電粒子4aは、凝集や比重を下げるために界面活性剤または分散剤などで被覆する表面処理が施されているものが好ましい。また、その色は材料自身の色でも、着色材を添加したものでも、或いは、粒子表面に他の材料を積層、混合したものであってもよい。その形成材料として、例えば、材料自身の色を利用する酸化チタン(白色)や酸化アルミニウム(白色)、或いは着色剤を混合して利用するポリエチレン、ポリスチレン、アクリル酸樹脂などが挙げられる。ここで、着色剤としては、アニリンブラック、カーボンブラック等の黒色顔料や、亜鉛華、三酸化アンチモン等の白色顔料や、モノアゾ、ジスアゾン、ポリアゾ等のアゾ系顔料や、イソインドリノン、黄鉛、黄色酸化鉄、カドミウムイエロー、チタンイエロー、アンチモン等の黄色顔料や、キナクリドンレッド、クロムバーミリオン等の赤色顔料や、紺青、群青、コバルトブルー等の青色顔料、フタロシアニングリーン等の緑色顔料や、フタロシアニンブルー、インダスレンブルー、アントラキノン系染料などのいずれか一種、 或いは二種以上が挙げられる。なお、これらの顔料には、必要に応じて、金属石鹸、樹脂、ゴム、油、ワニス、コンパウンド等の粒子からなる荷電制御剤や、チタン系カップリング剤、アルミニウム系カップリング剤、シラン系カップリング剤等の分散剤や、電解質や、界面活性剤や、潤滑剤や、安定化剤等を添加するようにしても構わない。

分散媒4bは、帯電粒子4aが良好且つ安定に帯電することができる絶縁性液体、つまり、実質的に水に不溶の有機溶媒から形成される。例えば、ドデカノール、ウンデカノール等の長鎖アルコール系溶媒や、ジブチルケトン、メチルイソブチルケトン等の多炭素ケトン類や、ペンタン、ヘキサン、オクタン等の脂肪族炭化水素や、シクロヘキサン、メチルシクロヘキサン等の脂環指揮炭化水素や、ベンゼン、トルエン、キシレン、ヘキシルベンゼン、ヘブチルベンゼン、オクチルベンゼン、ノニルベンゼン、デシルベンゼン、ウンデシルベンゼン、ドデシルベンゼン、トリデシルベンゼン、テトラデシルベンゼン等の長鎖アルキル基を有するベンゼン類等の芳香族炭化水素や、塩化メチレン、クロロホルム、四塩化炭素、1,2−ジクロロエタン等のハロゲン化炭化水素や、シリコンオイル、オリーブオイル等の種々の油類のいずれか単体、或いはこれらの混合物が挙げられる。この分散媒4bは、染料などの着色剤を溶解又は分散させることで着色されているとともに、イオン性界面活性剤が混合されている。

マイクロカプセル3は、帯電粒子と相接する第一層(内層)3Aと、この第一層3Aの表面に形成される第二層 (外層)3Bとが異なる成分からなる二層構造を有している。
ここで、第一層3Aは、ゼラチンなどのポリカチオン性材料と、アラビアゴム、アルギン酸ナトリウム、カラギーナン、カルボキシメチルセルロース、寒天、ポリビニルベンゼンスルホン酸、ポリビニルエーテル無水マレイン酸などのポリアニオン性材料との混合物から構成されている。

第二層3Bは、水溶性樹脂から構成され、例えば、ホルマリンレゾルシノール樹脂、ポリビニルアルコール、ポリウレタン樹脂、アクリル酸樹脂、ポリメチルーγ−メチル−L−グルタメート、メラミン、メタクリル酸樹脂、ホルムアルデヒド樹脂、ポリビニルピロリドン樹脂、フッ素系樹脂などが挙げられる。
バインダー5は、例えば、シリコン系樹脂、アクリル系樹脂、ウレタン系樹脂などから構成される。

上記構成の電気泳動パネル10の製造方法について、図2を参照して説明する。図2は、本発明の電気泳動パネルの製造工程のうち、マイクロカプセルの製造工程を示す説明図である。
第一に、図2におけるA〜Iに示すように、マイクロカプセル3の第一層3Aを形成する。

まず、帯電粒子4aとなるチタニア粒子CR−90(石原産業株式会社製)50g、チタネート系カップリング剤KR−TTS(味の素株式会社製)2.3g、アルミニウム系カップリング剤AL−M(味の素株式会社製)1g、分散媒4bとなるドデシルベンゼン(関東化学株式会社製)300gを、500mlフラスコに取り、攪拌と超音波印加によりチタニア粒子を分散する。そして、分散された分散液を100g分取し、この分散液にアントラキノン系青色染料(中央合成化学社製)1.8gを溶解し、白色を有する帯電粒子4aと、青色に着色された分散媒4bとからなる電気泳動分散液4として、チタニア分散液を形成する。

次いで、500mlのビーカーに、ゼラチン粉末(関東化学株式会社製)を5.5gと、アラビアゴム粉末(関東化学株式会社製)を5.5gとを量り取り、水60gに溶解する(A)。
次いで、この溶解液を、回転速度250rpmで攪拌しながら、この溶解液内にチタニア分散液を滴下する(B)。滴下後、回転速度を1300rpmに上げ、さらに1時間の攪拌を行う。

次いで、1時間の攪拌後、回転速度を500rpmに落とし、溶解液内に温水300mlを添加する(C)。そして、同様の回転速度によって、さらに30分の攪拌を行う。
次いで、30分の攪拌後、 溶解液内に10%酢酸溶液11mlを滴下する(D)。そして、溶解液全体を0℃に冷却しながら、回転速度500rpmで2時間攪拌を続行する(E)。

次いで、2時間の攪拌後、溶解液内にホルマリン溶液(関東化学株式会社製)を2.7ml添加する(F)。さらに、この溶解液内に10%炭酸ナトリウム溶液22mlを滴下する(G)。
次いで、この溶解液全体を室温に戻し(H)、攪拌を一夜続行することで、水溶液中には、帯電粒子4aであるチタニア粒子と分散媒4bであるドデシルベンゼンとからなる電気泳動分散液4を、ゼラチンとアラビアゴムとから構成された第一層3Aで内包させたマイクロカプセル3が形成される(I)。

ここで、マイクロカプセル3が分散された水溶液を、遠心分離・透析することによって、マイクロカプセル3を精製する。このとき、このマイクロカプセル3のうち、大きな粒子のマイクロカプセル3はふるいなどで除去し、小さな粒子のマイクロカプセル3は分液ロートなどを用いて除去することで、マイクロカプセル3の粒径を40〜60μmにそろえておく。

第二に、図2におけるJ〜Nに示すように、マイクロカプセル3の第一層3Aの表面に第二層3Bを形成する。
まず、マイクロカプセル3を20g量り取り、100mlの水溶液に分散させる(J)。
次いで、この分散液(J)を50℃に加熱し、レゾルシノール3.3gを加える(K)。

次いで、10%炭酸ソーダ溶液を加え、微アルカリ性としたのち(L)、攪拌させながら、37%ホルマリン溶液を1ml加える(M)。
次いで、10%酢酸溶液を加え、pH3.5とすると、付加縮合反応を起こし、第一の層3Aであるマイクロカプセル上に、ホルマリンレゾルシノール樹脂からなる第二の層3Bを析出させる(N)。

次いで、このマイクロカプセル3の分散した水溶液を、ブフナーロートなどに通し、溶解液内に約60%のマイクロカプセル3が含有されるように、マイクロカプセル3を濃縮する。
次いで、このマイクロカプセル3の分散した溶解液と、エマルジョン状態のシリコン系バインダーPOLON−MF−40(信越化学工業株式会社製)5とを、乾燥後の最終重量比が5:1となるように混合する。

次いで、シリコン系バインダー5と混合したマイクロカプセル3を、コータなどを用いて、予め対向電極7としてITOが形成されている対向基板6であるPETフィルムに150μmの膜厚となるように塗布し、90℃で20分間乾燥を行う。
次いで、このマイクロカプセル3が上面に形成された対向基板6であるPETフィルムの上面に、透明電極2としてITOが形成されている透明基板1として機能するPETフィルムを重ねて、ラミネータを通してラミネートすることによって、透明基板1と対向基板6との間に一層のマイクロカプセル3を封入してなる電気泳動パネル10を完成させる。

さらに、上記電気泳動パネル10における透明電極2と対向基板7とに配線を介して駆動回路20を接続させることで、表示体として電気泳動パネル10を備えた電気泳動ディスプレイ(表示装置)100を形成することができる。
このような電気泳動ディスプレイ100の一駆動例について、図3を参照して説明する。図3は、本発明の電気泳動ディスプレイの一駆動例を示す説明図である。ここで、図3の電気泳動パネル10においては、一画素分を示している。

電気泳動ディスプレイ100は、図3(A)に示すように、透明電極2及び対向電極7に電圧を印加していない状態の時は、マイクロカプセル3に内包された帯電粒子4aは重力に従って、図中下方に位置した状態にある。つまり、表示面となる透明基板1側には、分散媒4bが認識されるため、表示面には分散媒4bの色である青色が表示されている。

この状態から、図3(B)に示すように駆動回路20を接続し、透明電極2に負電荷、 対向電極7に正電荷を誘導すると、正極性に帯電した帯電粒子4aは負電荷に誘導された透明電極2側に泳動する。つまり、表示面となる透明基板1側には、帯電粒子4aが認識されるため、表示面には帯電粒子4aの色である白色が表示されるようになる。

この状態から、図3(C)に示すように、駆動回路20を開放状態に切り替えると、透明電極1上には電荷が保持されるため、この電極保持電荷のクーロン力で帯電粒子4aは、 透明電極2側に吸着された状態となる。つまり、一切エネルギーを供給していない状態で、表示面となる透明電極2側に帯電粒子4aが吸着した状態を保持し、表示面には帯電粒子4aの色である白色が表示され続けるようになる。

そして、この状態から、図3(D)に示すように、透明電極2に正電荷、対向電極7に負電荷を誘導するように駆動回路20を接続すると、帯電粒子4aは、透明電極2における保持電荷のクーロン力の束縛から開放され、対向電極7側に泳動する。つまり、表示面となる透明基板1側には、分散媒4bが認識されるため、表示面には分散媒4bの色である青色が表示されるようになる。

このような構成を有する電気泳動ディスプレイ100において、マイクロカプセル3を多層構造から構成し、電気泳動分散液4と相接する第一の層3Aをポリカチオン性材料とポリアニオン性材料との混合物から構成し、バインダーと相接する第二の層3Bを、ホルマリンレゾルシノール樹脂などの水溶性樹脂から構成したことによって、マイクロカプセル3の強度を向上させることが可能となる。よって、マイクロカプセル3を対向基板6などに塗布する際やラミネートする際に、マイクロカプセル3の一部が破壊し、 内部の電気泳動分散液4が流出することを抑制することができる。

また、マイクロカプセル3を構成する第二の層3Bの形成材料によって、材料特有の特性を付与することが可能である。例えば、第二の層3Bを、高い硬度を有し、可撓性を有するポリビニルアルコールで形成することによって、強度をさらに付与することが可能となる。また、第二の層3Bを、双極子モーメントを有するポリウレタン樹脂で形成することによって、電圧印加時に双極子モーメントが変化するため、マイクロカプセル3の強度向上のみならず、電気泳動パネル10のメモリー性も向上させることが可能となる。さらに、第二の層3Bを、パーフルオロスルホニルエトキシビニルエーテルなどのフッ素系樹脂で形成することによって、帯電粒子4aのマイクロカプセル3への付着を抑制するため、優れた表示応答性を確保することが可能となる。

なお、本実施形態においては、第一層3Aとして、ポリカチオン性材料とポリアニオン性材料との組成比X(=ポリカチオン性材料/ポリアニオン性材料)が、1.00である混合物から構成したが、組成比はこれに限らず、例えば、組成比Xが、0.25≦X<1.00、或いは、1.00<X≦4.00の範囲で混合させた混合物から構成するようにしても構わない。
(第一実施形態の変形例)
第一実施形態におけるマイクロカプセル3の第二層3Bを、ポリビニルベンジルジメチル−n−オクチルアンモニウムクロリドから構成している。

このように、マイクロカプセルの第二層3Bを、微生物に対して耐性を備えた樹脂から形成することによって、第一層3Aをゼラチンとアラビアゴムとからなる天然素材の材料で形成したとしても、微生物の攻撃を抑制することが可能となる。
ここで、第二層3Bをポリビニルベンジルジメチル−n−オクチルアンモニウムクロリドから形成したが、微生物に対する耐性を備えたものであれば、例えば、ポリー2−メタクリロキシエチルジメチル−n−ヘキサデシルアンモニウムクロリドで構成するようにしてもよいし、上述のポリビニルベンジルジメチル−n−オクチルアンモニウムクロリドとポリー2−メタクリロキシエチルジメチル−n−ヘキサデシルアンモニウムクロリドとの共重合物などで構成するようにしてもよい。
(第二実施形態)
本実施形態における電気泳動パネル10Aは、第一実施形態で説明した電気泳動パネル10のマイクロカプセルの第一層3Aが、組成比X(ゼラチン/アラビアゴム)として、0.25≦X<1.00、或いは、1.00<X≦4.00の範囲で混合されたポリカチオン性材料であるゼラチンと、ポリアニオン性材料であるアラビアゴムとの混合物から構成されている。また、第二層3Bが、組成比Xとして、0.25≦X<1.00、或いは、1.00<X≦4.00の範囲で、第一層3Bとは異なる組成比Xで混合されたポリカチオン性材料であるゼラチンと、ポリアニオン性材料であるアラビアゴムとの混合物から構成されている
次に、上記構成を有する電気泳動パネル10Aの製造方法について、図4を参照して説明する。図4は、本発明の電気泳動パネルの製造工程のうち、他のマイクロカプセルの製造工程を示す説明図である。

第一に、マイクロカプセル3の第一層3Aを、図2におけるA〜Iと同様の工程で形成する。
ここで、本実施形態においては、図2におけるAの工程において、500mlのビーカーに、ゼラチン粉末(関東化学株式会社製)を6.0gと、アラビアゴム粉末(関東化学株式会社製)を4.0gとを量り取り、水60gに溶解している。

第二に、図4におけるO〜Tに示すように、マイクロカプセル3の第一層3Aの上面に第二層3Bを形成する。
まず、マイクロカプセル3を20g量り取り、30mlの水溶液に分散させる(O)。
次いで、この分散液(O)を50℃に加熱し、ゼラチン粉末を4.0gと、アラビアゴム粉末を6.0gとを加える(P)。

このような構成を有する電気泳動パネル10Aにおいて、マイクロカプセル3の第一層3Aと第二層3Bとを、それぞれ組成比の異なるゼラチンとアラビアゴムとの混合物から構成したことによって、第一層3Aと第二層3Bとの帯電状態が異なるようになるため、電解印界時において二層間に双極子モーメントを誘起し、帯電粒子4aが固定されやすくなる。よって、電気泳動パネル10におけるメモリー性及び表示応答性を向上させることが可能となる。
(第二実施形態の変形例)
第二実施形態で示した電気泳動パネル10Aは、以下の方法で形成することも可能である。
