本発明は、表示画面に画像を表示する画像表示システム、例えば、室内で用いられる小型の画像表示装置や、ビルの側壁に配置される大型の画像表示装置などの表示画面と描画装置とから構成される画像表示システムに関する。

【従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする課題】
現在、画像を表示する装置が、あらゆる用途に用いられている。例えば、液晶表示装置などである。しかしながら、従来より存在する画像表示装置では、一般的に、各画素に表示を行わせるために各画素に画素データを送るためのラインが必要であり、このラインがあるために画像表示装置の構成が複雑になってしまうといった問題があった。特に、画像表示装置をビルの壁など画素データや電力の供給が難しい場所に設ける場合には、配線作業が困難であり、このような問題は顕著であった。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明に係る画像表示システムは、カプセル内に帯電粒子を配置して形成された電子インクを一対の電極により挟み表示セルとし、前記表示セルを複数配列して構成した画像表示装置を含む画像表示システムにおいて、画素データがレーザ特性に変換されたレーザを各表示セルに照射する信号送信手段と、外部側の電極の外側に配置されて照射されたレーザを受ける、フォトダイオードからなる信号受信部と、前記信号受信部が受けたレーザのレーザ特性に応じて前記電極に電圧を印加する表示制御部と、を備えるものである。ここで、レーザ特性とは、レーザの様々な特性であり、例えばレーザの強度、波長、又はレーザがパルス波である場合にはパルス間隔などである。このような構成とすることにより、各表示セルに表示画面にデータを送信するための配線が不要となり、表示画面を簡略化された構成とすることができる。また、画素データがレーザ特性に変換されたレーザを、前記各表示セルの信号受信部に照射する信号送信手段を備えることで、画像データを表示画面上に正確に描くことができる。

以下に、図面を参照して、本発明の好適な実施形態について説明する。

図1に、本発明の画像表示システム40の概略構成を示す。画像表示システム40は、大別して、描画装置42と、表示画面60とで構成される。

まず、表示画面60の構成について説明する。表示画面60は、表示セル10が格子状に2次元配列されて構成されている。なお、図1に示す表示画面60は模式図であり、実際には表示画面60に対する表示セル10の大きさはより細かく、分解能の高い表示が可能である。表示画面60の断面を図2に示す。この図2では、表示セル10が横に3つ並んでいる。各表示セル10は、紙、プラスチックなどの薄膜上に一対の外部電極20と内部電極22、及び発色素子12を配置して形成されている。この発色素子12は、略球形であり透明なカプセル14内に、透明な封入液体と、プラス電荷を持った白色の微粒子16、及びマイナス電荷を持った黒色の微粒子18とを配置して構成される。この発色素子12は一般的に電子インクと呼ばれるものを採用している。外部電極20は、透明な電極であり、各発色素子12の画像が表示される表示面側に配置される。また、内部電極22は、発色素子12の表示面と反対の面側に配置される。発色素子12は、これらの一対の外部電極20及び内部電極22により、挟まれた位置に配置されている。この表示セル10において、外部電極20の電位を高くし、内部電極22の電位を低くすると、電界が発生し、マイナス電荷を持った黒色微粒子18は液体中を外部電極20側に電気泳動により移動し、プラス電荷を持った白色微粒子16は内部電極22側に移動する。逆に、内部電極22の電位を高くし、外部電極20の電位を低くすると、マイナス電荷を持った黒色微粒子18は液体中を内部電極22側に電気泳動により移動し、プラス電荷を持った白色微粒子16は外部電極20側に移動する。したがって、外部電極20の電位を内部電極22の電位より高くすると、その区画では黒色に表示され、また、外部電極20の電位を内部電極22の電位より低くすると、その区画では白色に表示される。なお、各微粒子16,18は、一度電圧が印加された後は電圧印加を止めても、封入液体の粘性により、その位置が変動しないため、表示の維持に電力を必要としない。

また、外部電極20の外側には、フォトダイオードなどで構成された透明な信号受信部24が設けられており、内部電極22の下には、表示制御部28、電源制御部26、電位センサ30が設けられている。信号受信部24は、レーザビームを受光してレーザビームの強度を検出し、この検出値を表示制御部28に出力する。表示制御部28は、入力されたレーザビーム強度の検出値からレーザビームの特性を判別し、この特性に応じて外部電極20及び内部電極22に電圧を印加して電位差を発生させ、発色素子12に色を表示させる。また、信号受信部24は、レーザビームを受光し、光電変換により表示セル10の動作用の起電力を発生する。電源制御部26は、この発生した電力を制御し、電源制御部26、表示制御部28、電位センサ30に電力を配分する。また、電源制御部26は蓄電池を備え、光電変換により得られた電力を蓄積している。電位センサ30は、外部電極20と内部電極22の各電位を計測し、2つの電極20,22の電位差を計測するセンサである。表示制御部28は、電位センサ30による電位差の計測値に基づき、発色素子12が表示する色を判別する。なお、図示していないが、各部は電気的に接続されている。

なお、上記説明した本実施形態の表示セル10は、いわゆる電子インクを発色素子12として用いているが、発色素子12はこのような小さなものに限られず、大きなものを用いてもよい。ビルの側壁などに設置される表示画面では、大きな発色素子12を用いて表示セル10を大きなものとしても、十分な解像度を得ることができる。また、本実施形態では、1つの表示セル10内に1つの発色素子12が備えられた構成であるが、発色素子12は1つの表示セル10内に複数設けられていてもよい。また、隣接する複数の表示セル10の外部電極20を一枚の同電位の電極として、共通化してもよい。

次に、画像表示システム40の描画装置42の構成について説明する。描画装置42が、本実施形態において信号送信手段に該当する。描画装置42には、システム制御部44、画像処理回路46、レーザ制御回路48、レーザ発生装置54、反射板制御回路52、反射板装置46が設けられている。各部の動作について、以下に説明する。

描画装置42にはシステム制御部44が設けられ、このシステム制御部44が、表示される画像データを蓄積したり、画像書き換えのタイミングや、各部への電源の供給などの状態管理を行う。なお、画像データとは、画像を細分化した画素に対応する複数の画素データが含まれたデータである。画素データは、画素の輝度、色などの情報を含んだデータである。

画像処理回路46は、システム制御部44から画像データが入力されると、この画像データから画素データと、この画素データが表示されるべきアドレスデータを抽出する。そして、画素データをレーザ制御回路48に向けて出力し、また、アドレスデータを反射板制御回路52に向けて出力する。レーザ制御回路48と反射板制御回路52は、この対となる画素データとアドレスデータに基づいて同時に次に説明する処理を行う。

反射板制御回路52は、レーザ発生装置54が発生したレーザを表示画面60上のアドレスデータに対応した位置に照射するための処理を行う。具体的には、反射板制御回路52は、画素のアドレスデータが入力されると、このアドレスデータに基づき、レーザの方向を調節するための反射板装置46が備える反射板の姿勢を調節してレーザが進行する方向を制御する。この処理により、レーザは表示画面60上のアドレスデータに対応した位置に照射される。本実施形態では、反射板装置46は、画像データ内における画素データの配列順序に対応して、レーザビームを画面上部から横にスキャンして照射している。なお、本実施形態の反射板装置46はマイクロマシン技術により製造され、シリコンマイクロオプティカルスキャナーとして構成されている。また、反射板制御回路52は、反射板の姿勢を好適に調節するために、表示画面60と反射板の相対位置の情報をメモリに記憶していてもよい。

次に、レーザ制御回路48が画素データをレーザ特性に変換してレーザビームを発生させてから、表示画面60の各表示セル10がレーザ特性に応じた表示を行うまでの一連の動作について説明する。

レーザ制御回路48は、画素データが示す色が白である場合には、レーザのパルス周期を高い周期から低い周期に変更する。また、画素データが示す色が黒である場合には、逆に、レーザのパルス周期を低い周期から高い周期に変更する。このレーザビームのパルス周期の変化の様子を図3(a)に示す。これらのパルス周期の変更は、レーザ制御回路48と反射板制御回路52が同時に処理を行うため、レーザビームが画素データに対応する画素に照射されている間に行われる。

表示セル10の信号受信部24は、このレーザパルスを受信し、レーザの強度の検出値を表示制御部28に出力する。表示制御部28は、レーザの強度の検出値を所定の閾値を基準として判別して2値化する(図3(b))。表示制御部28は、さらにこの2値化されたレーザ強度から、レーザパルスのパルス周期を求め、周期が所定の閾値以上となったときを1と判別し、閾値以下となったときを0と判別する(図3(c))。

そして、表示制御部28は、この判別された値と、電位センサ30による電極20,22間の電位差の検出値出力とに基づき、電極20,22に電圧を印加するか否かを決定し、電圧を印加する。具体的には、電位センサ30の出力に基づき外部電極20の電位が内部電極22の電位よりも高い(現状の表示色:黒)と判別された状態において、周期が1から0に変化(画素データ:白)したことが判別されると電極20,22に電圧を印加して、発色素子12を白く表示させる。一方、周期が0から1に変化(画素データ:黒)したことが判別されると、電極20,22に電圧を印加しない。

また同様に、電位センサ30の出力に基づき外部電極20の電位が内部電極22の電位よりも低い(現状の表示色:白)と判別された状態において、周期が1から0に変化(画素データ:白)したことが判別されると電極20,22に電圧を印加しない。一方、周期が0から1に変化(画素データ:黒)したことが判別されると、電極20,22に電圧を印加して、発色素子12を黒く表示させる。以上に説明した一連の処理が各表示セル10に対して行われることにより、表示画面60に画像が表示される。

上述した本実施形態の特徴的事項は、画像表示システム40の表示画面60が、発色素子12、電極20,22、信号受信部24、及び表示制御部28を備えた表示セル10を複数配列して構成されたことである。このように表示画面60が構成されたため、表示画面60に画素データを送信するためのラインを接続する必要がなくなり、表示画面60を簡略化された構成とすることができる。例えば、ビルの側面などの屋外広告、ポスターなど、大きな表示画面を構成する際には、ラインがないことにより、画面の設置作業が容易になり、非常に大きな効果を得ることができる。また、回路基板上に複数の表示セル10を配置してパネルとして構成し、このパネルを組み合わせて表示画面60を構成することによっても、表示画面60の設置は容易となる。

また、前記各表示セル10は、前記発色素子12の表示色を検出する手段である電位センサ30を備えており、表示制御部28は、信号受信部24が受信したレーザビームが示す色と、電位センサ30の検出値が示す色が同じ場合には、電極20,22に電圧を印加しない。即ち、表示色は変更されない。これにより、表示セル10は、表示色を変更する必要があるときのみ、電極20,22に電圧を印加して表示色を変更するので、電力の消費を削減できる効果がある。

また、表示色を変更する必要のない表示セル10には、レーザを照射しないよう制御してもよい。つまり、画像処理回路46が、次回表示される画像データを現在表示されている画像データと比較する。この比較では、次回表示される画像データの各画素データと、現在表示されている画像データの該各画素データと同じ位置に表示されるの画素データとが比較され、画素データが同一か否かが判定される。この比較の結果、同じ位置に表示される画素データが異なる場合には、画像処理回路46は、レーザ制御回路48と反射板制御回路52に指令を出力し、その位置にレーザビームを照射して表示セル10の表示色を変更する。また、同じ位置に表示される画素データが同じ場合には、その位置に対してはレーザビームの照射を停止する。このように処理すると、無駄なレーザビームが照射されず、描画装置40の電力の消費を削減できる。

以上、本発明の好適な実施形態について説明したが、本発明は上記実施形態に限定されるものではなく、等価な範囲で様々な変形が可能である。例えば、上述の実施形態では、描画装置42を用いて表示画面60にレーザビームを照射したが、別の実施形態では、ユーザが小型のレーザ発生装置を手に持ち、表示画面60にレーザビームを照射してもよい。上述の実施形態の説明では、表示画面60にモノクロ表示する例について説明したが、表示画面60にカラーフィルタ等を装着することでカラー表示させてもよい。
