BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an engine capable of performing compression auto-ignition operation with a lean air-fuel ratio.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Gasoline engines usually use spark plugs to perform spark ignition operation, but in recent years, a combustion system that causes the gasoline engine to self-ignite an air-fuel mixture (also called a “premixed self-ignition combustion system”) Is being studied (for example, Patent Document 1 below). In this self-ignition combustion method, for example, gasoline is premixed with intake air, and self-ignition is performed by compression. The use of such self-ignition combustion has the advantage that the fuel efficiency is improved and the amount of air pollutants (especially NOx) can be greatly reduced.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The compression self-ignition operation is usually performed at a very lean air-fuel ratio (for example, an A / F value of about 25 to 40). For this reason, when the compression auto-ignition operation is performed at a low load, the exhaust gas temperature tends to decrease and the exhaust gas purification catalyst bed temperature tends to decrease. Therefore, if the compression self-ignition operation is continued at a low load, there is a problem that the oxidation activity of the catalyst is lowered and the exhaust gas cannot be sufficiently purified.
[0005]
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described conventional problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a technique capable of promoting the activation of a catalyst in an engine capable of compression auto-ignition operation.
[0006]
[Means for solving the problems and their functions and effects]
In order to achieve at least a part of the above object, an engine of the present invention is an engine capable of compression auto-ignition operation at a lean air-fuel ratio,
A combustion chamber composed of a cylinder and a piston;
A fuel supply unit for supplying fuel introduced into the combustion chamber;
An intake valve and an exhaust valve provided in the combustion chamber;
A variable valve mechanism capable of changing the operation timing of at least one of the air supply valve and the exhaust valve;
An exhaust passage for exhaust gas discharged from the combustion chamber;
An exhaust purification catalyst provided in the exhaust passage;
A catalyst state determination unit for determining whether or not the catalyst is in a predetermined inactive state;
Residual gas remaining in the combustion chamber after the exhaust period of the combustion chamber by changing the operation of the variable valve mechanism for activating the catalyst when it is determined that the catalyst is in the inactive state A catalyst activation operation for increasing the amount is performed, thereby setting the air-fuel ratio of the combustion chamber to a richer side and increasing the carbon monoxide gas in the exhaust gas discharged from the combustion chamber to the exhaust passage A catalyst activation control unit,
Equipped with a,
The catalyst activation control unit intermittently executes the catalyst activation operation a plurality of times when it is determined that the catalyst is in the inactive state .
[0007]
According to this engine, the residual gas amount is increased by the catalyst activation operation, the air-fuel ratio of the combustion chamber is set to a richer side, and the carbon monoxide gas in the exhaust gas is increased. The temperature can be raised. As a result, activation of the catalyst can be promoted even under operating conditions where the catalyst becomes inactive. Further, by performing the catalyst activation operation intermittently, the activation of the catalyst can be promoted without excessively deteriorating the fuel consumption.
[0008]
The catalyst activation control unit may set the air-fuel ratio of the combustion chamber to a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or a value slightly leaner than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio by the catalyst activation operation.
[0009]
According to this configuration, the carbon monoxide gas can be further increased, and the exhaust gas temperature can be increased, so that the activation of the catalyst can be further promoted.
[0010]
The catalyst activation control unit may further perform at least one of an increase in fuel amount and a decrease in air supply amount as the catalyst activation operation.
[0011]
According to this configuration, the air-fuel ratio can be further reduced, and the activation of the catalyst can be further promoted.
[0012]
The catalyst activation control unit intermittently executes the catalyst activation operation a plurality of times when it is determined that the catalyst is in the inactive state. At this time, as the catalyst activation operation, the fuel amount It is also possible to suppress a change in the output torque of the engine accompanying the catalyst activation operation by performing both the increase in the air flow rate and the decrease in the air supply amount.
[0013]
According to this configuration, by performing the catalyst activation operation intermittently, the activation of the catalyst can be promoted without excessively deteriorating the fuel consumption, and at this time, the fluctuation of the output torque is suppressed. it can.
[0014]
The engine has a plurality of combustion chambers;
When the catalyst activation control unit determines that the catalyst is in the inactive state, the catalyst activation control unit performs the catalyst activation operation for some of the plurality of combustion chambers, For the combustion chamber, the air-fuel ratio may be set to be leaner than the catalyst activation operation without performing the catalyst activation operation.
[0015]
According to this configuration, it is possible to suppress deterioration in fuel consumption associated with the catalyst activation operation.
[0016]
The catalyst state determination unit may estimate the temperature of the catalyst and determine that the catalyst is in the inactive state when the estimated temperature is equal to or lower than a predetermined temperature.
[0017]
The catalyst state determination unit may determine that the catalyst is in the inactive state when the engine continues to operate at a low load within a predetermined range.
[0018]
Alternatively, the catalyst state determination unit may determine that the catalyst is in the inactive state when the engine is in a predetermined low load operation state after starting.
[0019]
The present invention can be realized in various modes, for example, an engine, an engine control method or device, an engine exhaust purification method and device, and a function of the method or device. The present invention can be realized in the form of a computer program, a recording medium on which the computer program is recorded, or the like.

As shown in the map of FIG. 2C, the
[0031]
FIG. 2C shows an example of a so-called road load RL (trajectory traced as the vehicle travels). The point A on the load load RL is an operation condition of relatively low rotation and low load in the self-ignition combustion region. Further, point B on the load load RL is an operation condition of relatively high rotation and high load in the self-ignition combustion region. When the speed of the vehicle is increased, the points A and B are traced in this order, and then the operation is performed in the spark ignition combustion region. Since the point A is a low load, the exhaust temperature is low, and the temperature of the
[0032]
2A and 2B show valve timings at points A and B, respectively. Among these, the valve timing at point B corresponds to the valve timing in a typical lean self-ignition operation. In FIG. 2B, the valve opening timing INO of the
[0033]
In the valve timing at the point A shown in FIG. 2A, the negative overlap amount is increased compared to the point B, and is set to about 160 ° CA. Thus, the point A has a larger amount of negative overlap than the point B, and therefore the amount of internal EGR is also large. As a result, as will be described below, the amount of carbon monoxide discharged from the combustion chamber increases and the exhaust temperature rises.
[0034]
FIG. 3 is a graph showing changes in exhaust characteristics depending on the air-fuel ratio (A / F). Here, it is assumed that the fuel injection amount is constant. Increasing the internal EGR amount decreases the air-fuel ratio. This is because increasing the internal EGR reduces the amount of fresh air. In this embodiment, the air-fuel ratio is determined by the valve timing, and the air-fuel ratio and the internal EGR amount have a substantially direct correlation.
[0035]
The CO concentration becomes minimum on the lean side of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (stoichiometric), and rapidly increases as the air-fuel ratio decreases near the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. The HC concentration (unburned fuel component concentration) becomes minimum near the theoretical air-fuel ratio, and when it becomes excessively rich, it rapidly increases as the air-fuel ratio decreases. The exhaust temperature rises as the air-fuel ratio decreases.
[0036]
The amount of negative overlap at point A is significantly greater than that at point B, thereby increasing the amount of internal EGR as well. As a result, as shown in FIG. 3, the air-fuel ratio at the point A becomes a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or a value slightly leaner than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, and the CO concentration is significantly increased compared to the point B. As the internal EGR amount increases, the exhaust temperature rises and the exhaust amount flowing through the
[0037]
In this specification, the compression auto-ignition operation performed at a relatively rich air-fuel ratio like the operation at the point A is called “rich self-ignition operation”, and the lean auto-ignition operation like the operation at the point B is performed. The compression self-ignition operation performed at the fuel ratio is called “lean self-ignition operation”. The operation for performing the rich self-ignition operation is referred to as “catalyst activation operation”.
[0038]
Note that the air-fuel ratio during the rich self-ignition operation is preferably set to a value at which the CO concentration is higher than the value during the lean self-ignition operation and the HC concentration is equal to or less than the value during the lean self-ignition operation. Usually, it is more preferable to set the air-fuel ratio at the time of rich self-ignition operation to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or a value slightly leaner than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. As the “value slightly leaner than the theoretical air / fuel ratio”, for example, a value that is larger than the theoretical air / fuel ratio and smaller than about 1.1 times the theoretical air / fuel ratio can be adopted.
[0039]
FIG. 4 is a flowchart showing a control procedure of catalyst activation in the first embodiment. This procedure is repeated at regular intervals. In step S1, the catalyst state determination unit 44 (FIG. 1) acquires operating conditions (accelerator opening θac, engine rotational speed Ne, etc.), and whether or not the

It is possible to set the air-fuel ratio to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio without reducing the air supply amount or increasing the fuel injection amount. However, if the air supply amount is decreased and the fuel injection amount is increased, the change in torque during the catalyst activation operation period and the other period (lean self-ignition operation period) can be suppressed, and the torque is greatly increased. Generation of a step can be prevented.
[0049]
Instead of executing both the decrease in the air supply amount and the increase in the fuel injection amount, only one of them may be performed. If either of these is performed, the air-fuel ratio can be changed more significantly than when the air-fuel ratio is changed only by the valve timing, and the activation of the
