Description
A I Morozov, Yew V Esipchuk, A N Kapulkin, V A NevrovakiiおよびV A Smirnovによる論文である。

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a Hall effect plasma accelerator, sometimes known as a closed electron drift accelerator. The present invention was born when considering the design of such an accelerator for use as a reaction propulsion engine (thruster) on a satellite or other spacecraft. However, the present invention is applicable to other applications, such as plasma etching and processing workpieces in vacuum.
Background of the invention A conventional Hall effect reaction propulsion engine (thruster) comprises an annular acceleration channel extending circumferentially about the axis of the propulsion engine and extending axially from a closed end to an open end. is doing. Usually, the anode is located at the closed end of the channel and the cathode is located outside the channel, close to its open end. Means are provided for introducing a propellant (eg, xenon gas) into the channel, often through a passage formed in or near the anode itself. The magnetic system moves the electrons emitted from the cathode in a circumferential direction around the channel by applying a radial magnetic field across the channel. Some, but not all of the electrons emitted from the cathode are drawn through the channel toward the anode. The radial magnetic field deflects the electrons in the circumferential direction, so that the electrons move in a spiral trajectory and accumulate energy when they gradually drift toward the anode. The electrons collide with the propellant atoms in a region close to the anode, causing ionization. The resulting positively charged ions are accelerated by the electric field toward the open end of the channel and are ejected at a high speed from the open end to produce a desired thrust. Since these ions have a much larger mass than electrons, they are not immediately affected by the magnetic field, and their acceleration direction is not the circumferential direction of the channel but mainly the axial direction of the channel.
In this specification, the terms “upstream” and “downstream” are used for convenience to describe the direction of movement of ions within the channel.
Conventionally, the required radial magnetic field is applied across the channel by using an electromagnet having a yoke of magnetic material. The yoke constitutes both poles on either side of the channel (ie, one is radially inward of the channel and the other is radially outward of the channel). An example is given in European patent specification 0 463 408. This specification includes a single cylindrical portion that passes through the center of the annular channel and is provided with a single magnetized coil; many spaced apart on the outer periphery of the acceleration channel and provided with its own
Much theoretical work has been done on the best magnetic field distribution inside the acceleration channel in Hall effect accelerators. For example, see the paper by AN Bishaev and V Kim published in September 1978 in Soviet physics and applied physics 23 (9) entitled “Local plasma characteristics in a full current accelerator with a long acceleration zone” Is done. Another related paper was published in Soviet physics and applied physics 26 (4) published in April 1981, entitled “Magnetic field characteristics versus ion current parameters at the accelerator output with closed electron drift. This is a paper by VN Gavryushin and V Kim entitled “Influence”. Other related papers are articles by AI Morozov, Yew V Esipchuk, AN Kapulkin, VA Nevrovakii and VA Smirnov, published in Zhurnal Tekhnleheakoi Fiziki vol. 42 no.3. One conclusion reached in these theoretical studies is that it is desirable to minimize the magnetic field, and it is desirable to maximize the magnetic field gradient in the acceleration region close to the open end of the acceleration channel. . To achieve this effect, Hall effect plasma accelerators have been manufactured to incorporate magnetic screens inside and outside the annular channel in the anode region. These magnetic screens are usually formed by cylindrical walls extending from the back plate described above. The use of such a magnetic screen is described in European patent application 0 541 309.
The requirement to achieve the optimum magnetic field distribution in the channel, as well as the requirement to keep the accelerator weight to a minimum, has traditionally been the relative dimensions of the accelerator, in particular the ratio of its diameter to its axial length. Have imposed strict restrictions on
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a Hall effect accelerator in which magnetic bodies forming magnetic poles on opposite sides of a channel are substantially separated.
In accordance with the present invention, by using a separated magnetic body, sufficient or even improved characteristics can be achieved using a wide range of relative dimensions (especially the axial length relative to the diameter of the acceleration channel). Was found.
An inner magnetic body, preferably a spool-shaped central core extending in an axial direction; a distal piece at a downstream end of the central core and extending radially outward toward the channel to form a first magnetic pole; A second magnetic pole located at the upstream end of the central core and extending radially outward and extending axially downstream to form a second magnetic pole positioned axially between both ends of the internal magnetic body; And an end piece. Since the second end piece extends axially toward the first end piece, it acts as a magnetic screen and forms an anode region area with little or no magnetic field present. This is needed to give optimal efficiency.
Preferably, the outer magnetic body is generally a cylindrical wall of magnetic material; and a first end piece extending radially inward to form a magnetic pole opposite in polarity to the first magnetic pole of the inner magnetic body; A second end piece upstream and extending radially inward and then back and extending axially downstream and terminating at another pole. This end piece portion extending in the axial direction likewise serves as a magnetic screen for reducing the magnetic field in the anode area.
While it may be possible for the magnetic material to be permanently magnetized, it is preferable to include a separate magnetic field source (hereinafter referred to as a “magnetic source”). These magnetic sources can be coils, ie electromagnets. Alternatively, a permanent magnet may extend around the central core of the inner magnetic body so as to be partially enclosed between the central core and the “screen” portion of the second end piece extending in the axial direction. Preferably, the outer magnetic body has associated therewith a second magnetic source coaxial with the axis of the accelerator partially enclosed between the cylindrical wall and the associated “screen”. Yes.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION Reference is first made to Fig. 1, which shows a known device in a very schematic form. Here, the
An apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, which is also very schematically illustrated in FIG. 2, includes a satellite 1A having a
Referring now to FIGS. 3 and 4, the propulsion engine is generally symmetric about axis XX. It comprises an
At the upstream end of the channel, a hollow anode 24 having a square cross section with a groove extending continuously around it is arranged. The
As will be described later, the

The
FIG. 4 shows the magnetic field lines when current passes through the
The operation of the illustrated propulsion engine is as follows. Electrons are emitted from the
The resulting ions (positively charged) are accelerated downstream by an electric field generated by a potential difference of about 300 volts between the anode and the cathode. Propellant ions are not significantly affected by magnetic fields because their mass is relatively high compared to the mass of electrons. However, some have this effect, and the gradient characteristics of the magnetic field between the
It has already been mentioned that the electrons emitted from the
An important feature of the magnetic bodies 30a and 30b is that they are magnetically separated and each constitutes a separate electromagnet having its own north and south poles. Therefore, it is possible to obtain necessary magnetic characteristics even in an acceleration channel in which the overall dimensions of the magnetic system are different from those shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 and have a wide range of different dimensions. For example, it is anticipated that for a given output, it would be possible to produce a hall effect propulsion engine that is axially short and large (or vice versa). Thus, the propulsion engine can be designed to make good use of the space available on the satellite or rocket.
In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the
It will be understood that the specific embodiments of the invention shown in the drawings are described by way of example only and that the invention is not limited to the specific features of the examples. For example, the present invention is also applicable to so-called anode layer propulsion engines. When a configuration similar to the illustrated configuration is used, various design changes are possible. For example, the steering effect can be improved by dividing the
