Description
【0001】
これら信号電極15は、例えば透明なITO(indium tin oxide)で形成されている。

[0004]
As an electronic apparatus using such a liquid crystal display panel, for example, there is an apparatus that includes an input unit such as a keyboard or a numeric keypad and displays data on the liquid crystal display panel in accordance with an input operation to the input unit.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in such a liquid crystal device and an electronic apparatus using the liquid crystal device, the display area of the liquid crystal display panel becomes smaller as the lightness and thickness are reduced and the portability is pursued, resulting in a decrease in visibility. It is. In particular, portable information terminals such as mobile phones and pocket-sized personal computers that place importance on portability have a problem that the amount of display information is reduced by downsizing. As a measure for this, it is conceivable to provide two liquid crystal display panels as shown in FIG. 8 so that they can be spread. However, in this case, the number of driver ICs and the number of wires increase, so the thickness dimension of the casing is reduced. There are problems such as increase in cost and cost.

A first flexible printed wiring board connecting one end of the liquid crystal panel and the second liquid crystal panel; a second flexible printed wiring board connected to the other end of the first liquid crystal panel; And a driver IC mounted on the second flexible printed wiring board, and the scanning electrodes or the signal electrodes of the first liquid crystal panel and the second liquid crystal panel are connected via the first flexible printed wiring board. And connected to the driver ICIn the liquid crystal device, the first liquid crystal panel and the second liquid crystal panel are housed in a casing that can be pivoted via the hinge portion, and the first flexible printed wiring board is positioned at the hinge portion. It is characterized by doing.
[0008]
According to the present invention having such a configuration, the first and second liquid crystal panels are connected by the first flexible printed wiring board, so that the liquid crystal panels are pivoted by bending the first flexible printed wiring board. The liquid crystal panels can be overlapped or arranged on a plane. Therefore, a liquid crystal device having a large display area can be provided in a state where the liquid crystal panels are widened so that they can be spread apart. Even if each liquid crystal panel is small, the display area as a whole can be enlarged, so that highly visible display can be performed.
[0009]
In the present invention, the scanning electrodes or the signal driver ICs corresponding to the respective liquid crystal panels are connected to each other by connecting the corresponding scanning electrodes or the corresponding signal electrodes among the plurality of liquid crystal panels with the first flexible printed wiring board. It is no longer necessary to have For example, when the scan electrodes are connected by the first flexible printed wiring board, one or a set of scan driver ICs may be connected by the first and second liquid crystal panels, and the signal electrodes are connected to each other. When connected by the first flexible printed wiring board, one or a set of signal driver ICs may be connected to the entire first and second liquid crystal panels. For this reason, even if the number of liquid crystal panels increases, the number of driver ICs does not increase, and the cost can be reduced.
[0011]
In the present invention, the scanning electrode or the signal electrode connected by the first flexible printed wiring board is on the other end side where the first flexible printed wiring board is not provided on the substrate constituting the liquid crystal panel. It is connected to a second flexible wiring board on which a driver IC is mounted. In the present invention having such a configuration, since the driver IC is not mounted on the first flexible printed wiring board, the bending radius of the first flexible printed wiring board can be further reduced, and the liquid crystal panel (an enclosure including the liquid crystal panel) It has the effect that the space between the pivot parts can be saved.
[0012]
In the present invention, the scanning electrode may be formed on one of the pair of substrates, and the signal electrode may be formed on the other substrate. In the present invention having such a configuration, the area of the entire display region of a liquid crystal device including a plurality of passive matrix liquid crystal panels and active matrix liquid crystal panels using two-terminal nonlinear elements can be increased. it can.
[0013]
Furthermore, the present invention can be configured such that the scanning electrode and the signal electrode are formed on the same substrate side. According to the present invention having such a configuration, the area of the entire display region of a liquid crystal device including a plurality of active matrix driving type liquid crystal panels using TFTs (thin film transistors) as switching elements can be increased.
[0014]
Further, according to the present invention, a plurality of liquid crystal panels are respectively housed in a casing that exposes a display area of the liquid crystal panel, and these casings are provided so as to be pivotable via hinge portions, and the flexible printed wiring board is positioned at the hinge portions. It is preferable to adopt a configuration to do so.
[0015]
In the present invention having such a configuration, since the flexible printed wiring board having flexibility is located in the hinge portion, the connection state of the liquid crystal panels can be maintained even if the casings pivot through the hinge portion. it can. For this reason, a large display area can be formed in a state where the casings in which the liquid crystal panels are stored are opened, and the display image has an effect of improving the visibility. An electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes a liquid crystal device and an input unit that inputs data to the liquid crystal device, wherein the liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal sealed between a pair of opposing substrates, and the pair of substrates A plurality of scan electrodes parallel to a predetermined direction are formed on the opposite inner side surface of one substrate, and parallel to the opposite inner side surface of one substrate or the other substrate along the direction intersecting the scan electrode. A plurality of liquid crystal panels on which a plurality of signal electrodes are formed are provided, and corresponding scanning electrodes of the liquid crystal panels or corresponding signal electrodes are connected to each other through a flexible printed wiring board.
[0016]
According to the present invention having such a configuration, since a plurality of liquid crystal panels are connected by a flexible printed wiring board, the liquid crystal panels can be pivoted by bending the flexible printed wiring board, and the liquid crystal panels are stacked. It is possible to align and arrange the liquid crystal panels side by side on a plane. For this reason, it can be set as an electronic device with a large display area in the state which expanded and arranged liquid crystal panels. Even if each liquid crystal panel is small, the display area as a whole can be enlarged, so that highly visible display can be performed. With the configuration of the present invention, for example, a display area of a mobile phone or the like can be substantially enlarged, and the amount of data that can be displayed can be increased.
[0017]
In the present invention, corresponding scanning electrodes or corresponding signal electrodes are connected by a flexible printed wiring board between a plurality of liquid crystal panels, so that each liquid crystal panel needs to have a scanning driver IC or a signal driver IC. There is no. For example, when the scanning electrodes are connected by a flexible printed wiring board, one or a set of scanning driver ICs may be connected to the entire liquid crystal panels, and the signal electrodes are connected by a flexible printed wiring board. In such a case, it is sufficient that one or one set of signal driver ICs are connected to the entire liquid crystal panels. For this reason, even if the number of liquid crystal panels increases, the number of driver ICs does not increase, and the cost can be reduced. Thus, since a driver IC is not required for each liquid crystal panel, it is not necessary to provide a printed circuit board on which various electronic components are mounted for each liquid crystal panel, and the electronic device can be made thin.
