【0026】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a matrix type comprising a plurality of light emitting elements formed at each intersection of a predetermined number of anode lines and cathode linesOrganic ELDisplay device driving method andAndThe present invention relates to a driving device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
FIG. 6 shows a conventional driving method of an organic EL display device. This driving method is called a simple matrix driving method. Here, an organic EL display device in which light emitting elements (pixels) are formed at the intersections of the anode lines A1 to AN and the cathode lines B1 to BM arranged in a matrix form. An example of a drive target is shown. In this case, one of the anode lines A1 to AN and the cathode lines B1 to BM (in the example of FIG. 6, the cathode lines B1 to BM) are sequentially selected and scanned at a constant time interval, and the other is synchronized with this scanning cycle. (Anode lines A1 to AN in the example of FIG. 6) are driven by outputs from current sources 1-1 to 1-N which are driving sources, thereby causing a light emitting element at a desired intersection position to emit light. .
[0003]
The cathode lines B1 to BM are connected to scanning switches 2-1 to 2-M for selecting a power supply voltage (+ Vcc) or a ground potential (0 V) which is a reference potential in order to perform the sequential scanning. By scanning these scan switches 2-1 to 2-M while sequentially switching from the power supply terminal side to the ground terminal side at a constant cycle, the ground potential (0 V) is sequentially applied to the cathode lines B1 to BM. . On the other hand, the anode lines A1 to AN are connected to current switches 1-1 to 1-N fed from the power supply terminals or drive switches 3-1 to 3-N for selecting the ground potential (0 V). . These drive switches 3-1 to 3 -N are selectively turned on / off in synchronization with the scanning cycle of the scan switches 2-1 to 2 -M, so that the
[0004]
For example, when the light emitting elements E1,1 and E1,2 are caused to emit light, as shown in FIG. 6, only the scanning switch 2-1 is switched to the ground terminal side to scan the cathode line B1 to the ground potential. The drive switches 3-1 and 3-2 are switched to the current source side, and the anode lines A2 and A3 are connected to the current sources 1-1 and 1-2, respectively. Then, as indicated by the arrows in the figure, only the light emitting elements E1,1 and E1,2 are supplied with drive current to emit light. By repeating such scanning and driving operations at high speed, it is possible for the human eye to recognize that the light emitting elements E1,1 and E1,2 are simultaneously emitting light due to the afterimage phenomenon. Incidentally, by applying a reverse bias voltage (+ Vcc) having the same potential as the power supply voltage to the unselected cathode lines B2 to BM, erroneous light emission of the light emitting elements corresponding to the cathode lines B2 to BM is prevented. Then, by selectively performing such scanning and driving control for the scanning switches 2-1 to 2-N and the driving switches 3-1 to 3-M, the light emitting elements at arbitrary positions are caused to emit light in the same manner. Can do.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the conventional driving method, the cathode lines B1 to BM, which are scanning lines, are scanned with a duty ratio of 1 / M every scanning period. Accordingly, the display luminance Ld [cd / m required for the organic EL display device]2], Each light emitting element has Ld × M [cd / m when the corresponding cathode line is scanned.2It must emit light with high brightness. For this reason, even when the display luminance Ld is constant, when the number of scanning lines M increases, that is, when the
[0006]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and is a matrix type.Organic ELMatrix type that suppresses deterioration of luminance over time even when the number of scanning lines in the display device increases, and can achieve a luminance life equivalent to that of a display device with a small number of scanning linesOrganic ELAn object of the present invention is to provide a display device driving method and a driving device.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In the driving method of the matrix type organic EL display device according to
[0010]
Such claims1When using the described drive method,in frontThe display brightness in the normal display mode can be relatively lowered, and the display brightness in the partial display mode can be relatively increased.
According to this driving method, in the partial display mode in which the display brightness is relatively high., AboveFor the same reason as the case, the drive duty ratio of the scanning line to be scanned is increased, and the level of the drive signal necessary for obtaining the necessary luminance can be reduced. Further, even in the normal display mode in which full screen display is performed, the display luminance is relatively low, so that the level of the drive current applied to the light emitting element during scanning line scanning can be suppressed. In other words, in any of the normal display mode and the partial display mode, the driving current of the light emitting element is reduced, so that a decrease in luminance with time is suppressed.RukaTherefore, it is useful for extending the luminance life.
According to another aspect of the present invention, the maximum driving current of each light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the partial display mode and the maximum driving current of each light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the normal display mode are obtained. May be equal.
According to the third aspect of the present invention, the one horizontal scanning period for scanning the scanning line group in the partial display mode may be set to M / m times (M> m) the one horizontal scanning period in the normal display mode. Good.
[0011]
RunBy setting the light emission luminance of the light emitting element at the time of the scanning scan to be equal between the normal display mode and the partial display mode, the display luminance in the normal display mode is relatively lowered, and in the partial display mode. Even if you control the display brightness to be relatively highGood. Also in this caseAs a whole, the luminance life can be improved.
[0017]
According to the drive device of the matrix type organic EL display device according to claim 4, the control circuit gives a current signal to a desired signal line while periodically scanning the scanning line group, so that the scanning line and the signal are supplied. Control is performed to cause the light emitting element formed at the intersection of the lines to emit light. In this case, as a display mode of the matrix type organic EL display device, the control circuit scans all scanning lines (M lines) to display the entire screen, and a specific scanning line group (m lines, M>). m) Set the partial display mode in which only the predetermined range is scanned by scanning only. The control circuit includes an image memory and a determination unit, and the determination unit reads out image data stored in the image memory, and the light emitting element on the scan line for each scan line (M lines) in the image data. It is determined whether one or more of these are turned on (light emission) or all of the light emitting elements on the scanning line are off (non-light emitting), and which of the light emitting elements on the scanning line is selected Or the number m of scanning lines determined that one or more of them are on (light emission)Thus, the control is performed such that each scanning period T ′ of the m scanning lines scanned in the partial display mode is longer than each M scanning period T in the normal mode. For this reason, in the partial display mode, the drive duty ratio of the scanning line to be scanned becomes large. Therefore, when the emission luminance of the light emitting element that emits light according to the scanning of the scanning line is reduced, that is, to the signal line. Even when the level of the applied current signal (light-emitting element driving current) is reduced, display luminance necessary for the matrix display device can be obtained. Therefore, during the period in which the matrix type display device is driven in the partial display mode, the driving current of the light emitting element is reduced, so that a decrease in luminance with time is suppressed. The longer the driving period is, the more prominent it is. As a result, even when the number of scanning lines of the matrix type display device increases, it is possible to suppress a decrease in luminance over time as a whole, and it is possible to realize a luminance life equivalent to that of a display device having a small number of scanning lines. It will be.
[0018]
Such claims4When using the described drive unit, SystemWith the control circuit, it is possible to perform control to relatively lower the display brightness in the normal display mode and relatively increase the display brightness in the partial display mode.
According to this drive device, in the normal display mode in which full screen display is performed, the level of the drive current applied to the light emitting element at the time of scanning line scanning can be suppressed. It will be beneficial.
According to the fifth aspect of the present invention, the maximum driving current of each light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the partial display mode and the maximum driving current of each light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the normal display mode are obtained. May be equal.
Further, as in the means described in claim 6, the one horizontal scanning period for scanning the scanning line group in the partial display mode may be set to M / m times (M> m) the one horizontal scanning period in the normal display mode. Good.
[0019]
SystemBy controlling the light emission luminance of the light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the normal display mode and the partial display mode by the control circuit, the display luminance in the normal display mode is relatively lowered and the partial display is performed. Even if the display brightness in the mode is controlled to be relatively highGood. Also in this caseAs a whole, the luminance life can be improved.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
(First embodiment)
Hereinafter, the present inventionis connected withA first embodiment will be described with reference to FIGS.
FIG. 1 shows the overall electrical configuration by a combination of functional blocks. In FIG. 1, an organic EL panel 11 (matrix type)Organic EL(Corresponding to a display device) is modularized together with the

The drive
[0026]

b. If the scanning period of each scanning line in a state where the driving duty ratio of the scanning lines is 1 / M (a state where all scanning lines are scanned: the same driving method as in the prior art) is T [seconds], the driving duty ratio is 1 / M. The scanning period T ′ of each scanning line at m is T × (M / m) [seconds].
c. The light emission luminance L [cd / m] of the light emitting elements on the scan line when the drive duty ratio of the scan line is 1 / M (the same drive method as in the prior art).2], The light emission luminance L ′ of the light emitting elements on the scanning line when the drive duty ratio is 1 / m is L × (m / M) [cd / m2].
d. Under the general assumption that the emission luminance is proportional to the drive current, the drive current I at the time of scanning of each light-emitting element to be driven in a state where the drive duty ratio of the scan line is 1 / M (the same drive method as in the past). In contrast to [A], the driving current I ′ during scanning of the light emitting element to be driven when the driving duty ratio is 1 / m is I × (m / M) [A].

In FIG. 2, in the case of displaying a figure C (the number of scanning lines including light emitting elements to be driven is m) as shown in (a) and (d) on the
[0030]
On the other hand, in the driving method according to the present embodiment, the number of scanning lines per scanning period is reduced to m, so that the scanning period T ′ (= T × (M / m) [seconds] of those scanning lines. ]) Becomes longer than the conventional method as shown in (d), and the drive duty ratio of the scanning line is increased to 1 / m. As a result, since it is not necessary to relatively increase the light emission luminance at the time of scanning of each light emitting element, the drive current I ′ (= I × (m / M) [A]) flowing through them is also shown in (f). Will decrease proportionally.
[0031]
In short, according to the present embodiment, when there is a scanning line in which there is no light emitting element to be driven (for example, when a figure C as shown in FIGS. 2A and 2D is displayed), the scanning line is changed. Since the drive duty ratio during scanning increases, the level of the current signal (light emitting element driving current) applied to the signal line is reduced when the light emission luminance of the light emitting element that emits light in response to scanning of the scanning line is reduced. Even when the brightness is reduced, it is possible to obtain the necessary display brightness in the

That is, the light emission luminance L′ m [cd / m when scanning the light emitting element corresponding to the maximum gradation level km of the mth scanning line.2] Is the light emission luminance at the time of scanning by the conventional method (the luminance at the full gradation level is L [cd / m2] L × (km / K) [cd / m in consideration of the gradation level2]) And the following equation (2).
[0037]
[Expression 2]
From this equation (2), the following equation (3) is obtained.
[Equation 3]
Since there is no factor for the mth scanning line on the right side of the equation (3), the light emission luminance L′ m [cd / m at the time of scanning the light emitting element corresponding to the maximum gradation level of each scanning line.2] Is constant for any scan line. Therefore, in the following description, L′ m will be expressed as L ′. As a result, the following expression (4) is obtained.
[0038]
[Expression 4]
From this equation (4), the following can be understood. That is, according to the driving method of this embodiment, only when the maximum gradation level km of the light emitting elements on the mth scanning line is full gradation (km = K (m = 1 to M)). Since the light emission luminance L ′ at the time of scanning of each scanning line coincides with the luminance L at the full gradation level, the effect as in the first embodiment cannot be obtained. However, when the
[0039]
Here, on the assumption that the light emission luminance of the light emitting element is proportional to the drive current, the drive current I [A] required for the conventional drive method isreferenceThe necessary drive current I ′ in the example can be expressed by the following equation (5).
[0040]
[Equation 5]
Each light emitting element having a gradation level other than the maximum gradation level km on the scanning line has a predetermined luminance and gradation by controlling the pulse width of the driving current (current signal) applied during the scanning period. You will get a level. In this case, the pulse width Pij applied to the light emitting element in the i-th row and the j-th column is obtained by the following equation (6).

On the other hand, the drive
[0042]
Book configured in this wayreferenceAccording to the example, each light emitting element emits light at a plurality of gradation levels according to image data given from the outside. In this case, the scanning period of each scanning line in one scanning cycle of the scanning line group is controlled so as to be a period proportional to the maximum gradation level km of the light emitting element to be driven existing on the scanning line. Therefore, for example, when there is no light emitting element to be driven on the scanning line, the maximum gradation level km of the light emitting element to be driven is regarded as zero, and scanning is performed on the scanning line where the light emitting element does not exist. I will not. In addition, the scanning line in which the light emitting element to be driven exists is controlled so that the scanning period is shortened when the maximum gradation level km of the light emitting element to be driven is relatively low. If there is a scanning line in which the above-described scanning is not performed, other scanning lines, that is, scanning lines where there are light emitting elements to be driven in which the maximum gradation level km is relatively high are present. Thus, the scanning period is extended. Accordingly, the drive duty ratio of a scanning line having a light emitting element that is required to display at a relatively high gradation level is increased.

(Other embodiments)
In addition, the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and can be modified or expanded as described below.
First2In the embodiment, a “low brightness full screen mode” for displaying the entire screen with a relatively low light emission brightness is set as the normal display mode, and a relatively high light emission is made using only a predetermined range of the screen as the partial display mode. Although the “high luminance sub-screen mode” performed with the luminance is set, it is not necessary to reduce the emission luminance in the full-screen mode. In this way, when the light emission luminance in the normal display mode using the full screen is increased, the drive current of the light emitting element is increased to the same level as in the conventional case, so that the light emission luminance is expected to decrease with time. However, during the period of driving in the partial display mode, the driving current of the light emitting element is reduced, so that a decrease in light emission luminance over time is suppressed. Becomes more prominent as the relative length increases. As a result, matrix typeOrganic ELEven when the number of scanning lines of the display device is increased, a decrease in luminance over time can be suppressed as a whole, and a luminance life equivalent to that of a display device having a small number of scanning lines can be realized.
Therefore, for example, even if the light emission luminances in the normal display mode and the partial display mode are set to be equal, the luminance life can be improved as a whole.
[0055]
When the normal display mode and the partial display mode are set, the light emission luminance of the light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the normal display mode is set relatively high, and the light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the partial display mode is set. You may perform control which sets light emission luminance relatively low. When such control is performed, in the partial display mode, the level of the drive current applied to the light emitting element during scanning line scanning can be suppressed. Therefore, overall, it is beneficial for extending the luminance life. It becomes.
[0056]
Furthermore, by setting the light emission luminance of the light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the normal display mode to be relatively high and setting the light emission luminance of the light emitting element during scanning line scanning in the partial display mode to be relatively low. The display brightness in the normal display mode and the partial display mode may be set to the same level, and this also makes it possible to improve the brightness life as a whole.
