レンズ部2は,回折光学素子の1つであるCGH(Computer Generated Hologram)素子により形成してもよい。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a MEMS optical switch using a microlens.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, a MEMS optical switch using a MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology has been proposed. 80-85. As an example, a free space mirror type pop-up type MEMS optical switch is shown in FIG. The switch shown in FIG. 5 is an 8 × 8 matrix switch, which includes eight input-side

Features of the switch having the above configuration are that the configuration is simple, and that the
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the outer diameter size of the GRIN lens is limited, and it is difficult to arrange the GRIN lenses in parallel at a pitch of 1 mm or less. This point was a barrier to miniaturization of optical switches.
[0007]
Further, when the number of optical fibers constituting the matrix is increased to increase the size of the switch, the optical path from the input side optical fiber to the output side optical fiber inevitably becomes longer. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the collimation length. Here, the collimation length is the distance that collimated light propagates in a parallel light state. However, due to the nature of the light, increasing the collimation length increases the beam diameter. In order to reflect light with a large beam diameter, the size of the mirror must be increased, which is also an obstacle to miniaturization of the switch.
[0008]
Furthermore, in the optical switch manufacturing process, mounting individual GRIN lenses one by one at a predetermined position with high accuracy is not an easy task, leading to higher costs.
[0009]
An object of the present invention is made in view of such problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide an optical switch that can be miniaturized. Another object of the present invention is to provide an optical switch capable of reducing the cost.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, according to a first aspect of the present invention, a plurality of lens portions formed by etching and arranged in an array shape in a direction intersecting the optical axis are integrated with the lens portion. and handling-support portion is extended form, a part of the outer periphery extending from the forming surface of the lens portion on the side facing, have a, a projecting portion projecting downward from the handling and support portions A microlens array that collimates or condenses light input and output ; and an optical fiber that has substantially the same external dimensions as the protruding portion of the microlens array, and the protruding portion and the A part of the optical fiber provides a MEMS optical switch characterized in that a mirror is placed in a groove formed on the same substrate provided on the optical path . According to such a configuration, an optical switch can be configured using a microlens array having a smaller size than that of a GRIN lens that has been used in the past, so that the optical switch can be miniaturized. In addition, since a plurality of micro-sized lens parts can be handled collectively, handling at the time of mounting becomes easy, work time is shortened, and cost can be reduced. Further, since the microlens array can be mounted in the mounting groove in which the optical fiber is disposed in the same manner as the optical fiber, high-precision mounting is easily possible.
[0011]
At this time, at least one of the plurality of lens units may be configured to have different optical performance from the others. For example, according to the optical path length corresponding to each lens unit, the light condensing performance of the lens unit is made different so that the minimum necessary collimation length can be obtained. According to such a configuration, since the beam diameter does not become larger than necessary, it can contribute to miniaturization of the optical switch.
[0013]
Further, it is preferable that the projecting portion is formed in a substantially arc-shaped outer shape with the optical axis of the lens portion as a central axis.
[0014]
The optical switch may be configured to be a free space mirror type. The microlens array may be made of, for example, a silicon crystal substrate. Alternatively, it may be made of a substrate made of GaAs, Inp, GaP, SiC, Ge or the like. Further, the lens unit may be constituted by a diffractive optical element. Furthermore, the groove formed on the substrate is preferably a V-groove.
[0015]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. In the following description and the accompanying drawings, components having substantially the same function and configuration are denoted by the same reference numerals, and redundant description is omitted.
[0016]
FIG. 1 is a top view showing the configuration of the MEMS optical switch according to the first embodiment of the present invention. In this switch, a microlens array is used as a collimating lens instead of the GRIN lens shown in FIG. This switch is a free space mirror type pop-up type MEMS optical switch, which is an 8 × 8 matrix switch.

Here, the pitch P which is the fiber interval shown in FIG. 1 is considered. When the pitch P is narrowed, the light from the adjacent optical fiber interferes to cause an influence. According to diffraction theory, the limit value of the pitch P that does not need to consider the influence of interference is 125 μm in the case of 8 × 8 matrix switch, 250 μm in the case of 16 × 16 matrix switch, and in the case of 32 × 32 matrix switch. 500 μm.
[0030]
Such a narrow pitch could not be realized with a conventional optical switch using a GRIN lens due to the size of the GRIN lens. However, as in the present embodiment, a microlens having a
[0031]
As described above, according to the present embodiment, by using a microlens having a lens portion formed by etching as a collimator lens, there is no restriction due to the lens outer diameter size, and the pitch can be reduced to a value sufficient in diffraction theory. . Therefore, the downsizing of the MEMS optical switch can be greatly advanced. Since the pitch can be reduced, the overall optical path length can be shortened compared to the conventional case, and the required collimation length is also shortened. Because of the relationship between the collimation length and the beam diameter described above, the beam diameter of the collimated light is also smaller than before, and the required mirror size can be reduced. In addition, by adopting a microlens array configuration in which multiple lens parts are integrated, multiple lens parts can be handled in a lump, making handling during mounting extremely easy and cost-effective. Can be achieved. Further, since the microlens array has a protruding portion having the same outer diameter as that of the optical fiber, it can be mounted in the V-groove with high accuracy.
[0032]
Next, a MEMS optical switch according to a second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 4 is a top view showing the configuration of the switch. In the optical switch of the present embodiment, the configuration of the lens unit is different from that of the optical switch of the first embodiment. The following description will be made with a focus on this point, and a duplicate description of the same configuration will be omitted.
[0033]
In the present embodiment,
[0034]
Since the longest optical path length corresponding to each lens part is different, the required collimation length is also different for each lens part. For example, in the
[0035]
Here, since the lens portion is composed of a diffractive optical element formed by etching, in order to form a lens portion having different performance in one microlens array, etching is performed using a mask pattern corresponding to each lens portion. It can be easily manufactured.
[0036]
As described above, according to the present embodiment, similarly to the first embodiment, by using a microlens having a lens portion formed by etching as a collimator lens, there is no limitation due to the lens outer diameter size, and diffraction The pitch can be reduced to a theoretically sufficient value.
[0037]
Furthermore, in this embodiment, each lens unit is configured to have different optical performance so as to generate light having a minimum necessary collimation length. As a result, the beam diameter can be minimized, which can further contribute to the reduction of the mirror size. This point is particularly effective when applied to a large-scale optical switch.
[0038]
As mentioned above, although preferred embodiment concerning this invention was described referring an accompanying drawing, it cannot be overemphasized that this invention is not limited to this example. It is obvious for those skilled in the art that various changes or modifications can be conceived within the scope of the technical idea described in the claims. It is understood that it belongs to.
[0039]
In the above description, a free space mirror type pop-up 8 × 8 matrix switch has been described as an example, but the present invention is not limited to this. The present invention is applicable to a free space mirror type MEMS optical switch such as a biaxial tilt mirror system or a stand-up system. The number of optical fibers constituting the matrix may be other than the above example. In the above example, a lens array in which all the lens portions in one row are connected is shown. However, a combination of a plurality of lens arrays or a combination of a single lens and a lens array can be adopted as necessary. Further, the shape of the lens portion, the edge portion, the handling / supporting portion, the overhanging portion, etc. constituting the lens array is not limited to the above example, and various shapes are conceivable. For example, the lens portion is not limited to a circle and can be formed in a desired shape.
