Description
J. Appl. Phys.

Color displays for luminescent displays, luminescent objects, solid state image intensifiers, display screens, monitors, etc. must reproduce color images so that color recognition is possible. To achieve this, all color information about the color image is displayed with information about the three primary colors red, green and blue. By adding additional colors, any color including white can be created from the three primary colors. This principle has been adopted by various flat tube technologies such as ordinary color television receivers with cathode ray tubes and plasma display screens, electroluminescent display screens and LCD displays. In other commercially available color displays, the three primary colors red, green and blue are produced by a diode array with semiconductor diodes emitting red, green and blue. However, in these color displays, color recognition image reproduction such as pure green and blue color reproduction is a problem. On the other hand, the development of UV-emitting semiconductor diodes has increased the possibility of color recognition image reproduction for diode-type color displays. The reason is that theoretically any desired color in the visible light spectrum can be generated from UV light. For this purpose, illuminants are used that absorb UV light and re-emit it at wavelengths in the visible range. It is known to use inorganic pigments as light emitters to convert UV light into the visible region. For example, from pages L838-839 of Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. Vol. 35 (1996), as phosphors for converting UV light from UV diodes in fluorescent color displays, ZnS; Ag, ZnS; Cu, It is known to use Al and ZnCdS; Ag. These light emitters and ordinary light emitters such as Y 2 O 3 ; Eu have a high quantum effect, but the absorption of these light emitters is extremely small in the near UV region where the UV diode emits light.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a diode type diode comprising a UV diode and a phosphor, which has a high quantum effect and a high extinction coefficient in the near UV wavelength range, and can achieve color recognition image reproduction. To provide a color display.
The purpose of this is the UV diode and the general formula LnL 3 X 2 : [where Ln = Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Th 3+ , Dys 3+ , Sm 3+ , L = 4-R-4 '-Benzophenone carboxylic acid (R = phenyl, benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 H 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-R-4'-benzophenone acetylacetonate (R = phenyl Benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 OH 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-acetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-trifluoroacetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-acetophenone acetylacetonate or 4-tri Fluoroacetophenone acetylacetonate, and X = 1/2 phenanthroline, 1/2 diphenylphenanthroline, 1/2 · 4-Cl-phenanthroline, 1/2 bipyridine, 1/2 ethylenediamine, triphenylphosphine oxide, trimethylphosphine Oxide, triethylphosphine oxide, 1/2 diethyleneglycol Dimethyl ether or ethanol. It is achieved according to the invention by a diode-type color display comprising a light emitter represented by
Such color displays are distinguished by ligand-centered absorption in the near UV region using high intrinsic emission quantum efficiency and high extinction coefficient and in the short wavelength visible region between 320-450 nm. The UV absorption has its maximum at 390-320 nm. From a photophysical consideration, the properties of these two light emitters are mutually exclusive. Surprisingly, however, it has been found that a phosphor of the composition LnL 3 X 2 satisfies both criteria. The illuminant according to the present invention having an “antenna molecule” L containing benzophenone or acetophenone as a structural element exhibits an absorption capacity several times that of a normal illuminant. Changing the ligand L makes it possible to introduce large absorptions at various wavelengths in the lanthanoid compound substantially linearly and independently. Concentration quenching is generally a problem with normal illuminants with high activator concentrations, but is not observed with the illuminants according to the present invention. The illuminant according to the present invention is a molecular compound and, therefore, can generally be easily dissolved in a polar organic solvent. As a result, their properties can easily be examined in solution and the results transferred to the solid state. The solubility in organic solvents further allows new design concepts for diode-type color displays to be developed.
Within the scope of the present invention, this diode-type color display is preferably provided with a transparent polymer coating comprising the light emitter of the general formula LnL 3 X 2 in solid solution. This coating is transparent. The reason is that light is not scattered by the dissolved phosphor particles.
These and other aspects of the invention will be apparent from and elucidated with the three examples described below.
The diode type color display according to the present invention includes a UV emitting diode as an excitation source for UV radiation, and a light emitter represented by a general formula LnL 3 X 2 . In the formula, Ln = Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Tm 3+ , Dys 3+ , Sm 3+ , L = 4-R-4′-benzophenonecarboxylic acid (R = phenyl, benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 H 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-R-4′-benzophenone acetylacetonate (R = phenyl, benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 H 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-acetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-trifluoroacetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-acetophenone acetylacetonate or 4-trifluoroacetophenone acetylacetonate, and X = 1/2 phenanthroline 1/2 diphenylphenanthroline, 1/2 ・ 4-Cl-phenanthroline, 1/2 bipyridine, 1/2 ethylenediamine, triphenylphosphine oxide, trimethylphosphine oxide, triethylphosphine oxide, 1/2 diethylene glycol-dimethyl ether (diglyme) or Shown in ethanol It is. Europium-containing or samarium-containing phosphors convert UV radiation into visible red light. Terbium-containing phosphors convert UV radiation into visible green light, thulium-containing phosphors convert UV radiation into blue light, and dysprosium-containing phosphors convert UV radiation into a bluish yellow mixed light.
The simplest color display according to the present invention comprises a UV diode and a transparent coating provided on the UV diode and made of a light emitter according to the present invention. This transparent coating can comprise, for example, a light emitter that is solidified in a transparent matrix of polyacrylate, polystyrene, epoxy resin or other polymer.
Since LEDs are mass-produced, they are typically embedded in epoxy housings, epoxy resin cast lenses that serve to improve the separation of light from the diodes. In this preferred embodiment, the light emitter can be provided as a contact layer between the actual diode and the epoxy resin dome. Alternatively, the light emitter may be provided as a coating on the exterior of the epoxy resin dome. According to another preferred embodiment, the phosphor is mixed with an epoxy resin and forms a solid solution therewith.
Large two-dimensional displays can also be easily manufactured. In this case, the diode array is combined with a light emitter according to the invention. For example, the diode array may be covered with a glass plate on which a three-color light emitter set having red fluorescent dots, green fluorescent dots, and blue fluorescent dots is printed. The red fluorescent dot comprises LnL 3 X 2 as a light emitter. This UV diode is in particular an InGaN or GaN UV diode and has its emission maximum in the range of 370-410 nm with a half-width value FWHM <50 nm.
The light emitter according to the present invention has the following general formula: LnL 3 X 2 . In the formula, Ln = Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Tm 3+ , Dys 3+ , Sm 3+ , L = 4-R-4′-benzophenonecarboxylic acid (R = phenyl, benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 H 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-R-4′-benzophenone acetylacetonate (R = phenyl, benzyl, CH 3 , CF 3 , C 2 H 5 , F, Cl, OCH 3 , CH 3 CO), 4-acetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-trifluoroacetophenone carboxylic acid, 4-acetophenone acetylacetonate or 4-trifluoroacetophenone acetylacetonate, and X = 1/2 phenanthroline 1/2 diphenylphenanthroline, 1/2 ・ 4-Cl-phenanthroline, 1/2 bipyridine, 1/2 ethylenediamine, triphenylphosphine oxide, trimethylphosphine oxide, triethylphosphine oxide, 1/2 diethylene glycol-dimethyl ether (diglyme) or Is ethanol . These lanthanoid europium, terbium, thulium, dysprosium and samarium complex coordination compounds have Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Tm 3+ , Dys 3+ and Sm 3+ as metal centers and as charging ligands. Benzophenone-4-carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, or benzophenone-4-acetylacetonate or a derivative thereof, and phenanthroline, 1/2 diphenylphenanthroline, 1/2 · 4-Cl- as a neutral ligand It comprises phenanthroline, 1/2 bipyridine, 1/2 ethylenediamine, triphenylphosphine oxide, trimethylphosphine oxide, triethylphosphine oxide, 1/2 diethylene glycol-dimethyl ether (diglyme) or ethanol. These coordination compounds exhibit strong optical intraligand transitions and can act efficiently as light-sector antennaes apart from chelating ligand absorption. . Primary excitation by UV radiation leads to a ligand-centered exited state, whose energy is transferred to lanthanoid ions in the next step, which leads to light emission. In these compounds, the original absorption properties of the ligand are substantially retained and the interligand interaction is weak. The coordination saturation of lanthanoids prevents the compound's tendency to polymerize, and as a result, the compound exists in a mononuclear state. Therefore, unlike the light emitters according to the current situation, active ions are added to the receiving side lattice, and here, molecular light emitters are used.
