【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an illumination optical device and a projector.
[0002]
[Background]
Conventionally, as a projector, a light beam emitted from a light source device is separated into RGB color light by a dichroic mirror, and modulated according to image information for each color light by three liquid crystal panels (light modulation devices). A so-called three-plate projector is known in which a later luminous flux is synthesized by a cross dichroic prism and a color image is enlarged and projected via a projection lens.

An object of the present invention is to provide an illumination optical device that can improve contrast and can be miniaturized, and a projector having the illumination optical device.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
Therefore, the present invention intends to achieve the object by adopting the following configuration.
An illumination optical device of the present invention is an illumination optical device that illuminates a light modulation device that includes a rectangular image forming region that modulates an incident light beam according to image information and forms an optical image. A light source device including an elliptical reflector that reflects the light beam emitted from the arc tube, and a parallelizing lens that collimates the light beam reflected by the elliptical reflector, and a plurality of small lenses in a plane orthogonal to the illumination optical axis. A light beam splitting optical element that is arranged in a matrix and splits the light beam emitted from the light source device into a plurality of partial light beams, and each partial light beam split by the light beam splitting optical element is an image of the light modulation device A condenser lens that is superimposed on a formation region, and the arc tube includes a tubular member formed with a bulging portion that encloses the light emitting portion main body therein, and is disposed on a side opposite to the elliptical reflector of the bulging portion. A reflecting member for reflecting the radiated light beam to the elliptical reflector is provided, and the tip position of the reflecting member on the elliptical reflector side substantially coincides with the opening of the elliptical reflector in the illumination optical axis direction, and the collimating lens Is arranged at a position where the diameter of the light beam reflected by the elliptical reflector is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming region of the light modulation device, the collimating lens, the light beam splitting optical element, The light beam transmission region of the condensing lens is set to a rectangular shape that is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side size of the image forming area.
[0008]
According to the present invention, since the elliptical reflector is used, not only the light beam emitted from the light source lamp but also the reflected light beam can be narrowed down and the diameter thereof can be reduced. By arranging the collimating lens at a position where the diameter of the light beam reflected by the elliptical reflector is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming region, the collimating lens is further provided at the subsequent stage of the collimating lens. The light beam transmission area of the light beam splitting optical element and the condensing lens to be arranged can be set to a rectangular shape that is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming area. Thereby, the diameter of the light beam emitted from the condenser lens is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming region.
Since the difference between the diameter of the light beam emitted from the condenser lens and the long side dimension and the short side dimension of the image forming area is reduced, the incident angle of the light beam emitted from the condenser lens to the light modulation device is reduced. be able to. The smaller the incident angle of the incident light beam to the light modulation device, the better the contrast of the projected image. Therefore, the contrast of the projected image can be improved compared to the case of using a conventional illumination optical device.
[0009]
In addition, since the incident angle of the incident light beam to the light modulation device is thus reduced, the emission angle of the light beam emitted from the light modulation device is also reduced. Therefore, the F number of the projection lens provided at the subsequent stage of the light modulation device can be increased, and a projection image with higher resolution or high definition can be formed.
In addition, the light beam transmission area of the collimating lens, the light beam splitting optical element, and the condenser lens is set to be not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming area of the light modulation device. The size can be made smaller than that of the beam splitting optical element or the like. Therefore, the illumination optical device can be reduced in size and weight.
[0010]
In addition, when using an arc tube to which no reflecting member is attached, it is necessary to use a large elliptical reflector that covers the tip of the arc tube in order to reflect all the light flux emitted from the arc tube.
According to this invention, since the reflecting member is attached to the arc tube, the light beam emitted from the tip of the arc tube is reflected to the elliptical reflector side. Therefore, it is not necessary to make the size of the elliptical reflector so as to cover the tip of the arc tube, and the size of the elliptical reflector can be reduced.
[0011]
Also, when using a large elliptical reflector, the position where the diameter of the light beam reflected by the elliptical reflector is greater than or equal to the short side dimension and less than or equal to the long side dimension of the image forming area is far from the light source lamp, so it is parallel to the light source lamp. It is necessary to increase the distance from the lens. Further, when the distance from the light source lamp is increased as described above, it is necessary to increase the magnification of the parallelizing lens.
In contrast, in the present invention, since the size of the elliptical reflector can be reduced, the position where the diameter of the light beam reflected by the elliptical reflector is not less than the short side dimension and not more than the long side dimension of the image forming region is close to the light source lamp. . Therefore, the collimating lens can be brought close to the light source lamp, and the illumination optical device can be reduced in size. Further, since the collimating lens can be brought close to the light source lamp, the magnification of the collimating lens can be reduced.
[0012]
In the present invention, it is preferable that the reflection member is a metal film formed by vapor deposition on a tip portion of the bulge portion.
By forming a metal film as a reflecting member on the bulging portion that encloses the light emitting unit main body, the light beam emitted from the tip portion of the bulging portion can be reliably reflected to the elliptical reflector. Accordingly, it is possible to prevent the light beam emitted from the tip portion of the bulging portion from being emitted without being reflected by the elliptical reflector.
[0013]
In the present invention, it is preferable that the collimating lens is a collimating concave lens in which an incident side and / or an exit side of a light beam transmission region are aspherical.
When a spherical collimating concave lens is used, spherical aberration occurs, and the parallelism of the central part is high, but the parallelism of the peripheral part may not be good.
According to this invention, the parallelism of the emitted light beam can be improved by making the incident side and / or the exit side of the collimating concave lens aspherical.
[0014]
In the present invention, the collimating concave lens is (1) an aspherical surface having a hyperboloid shape on the incident side of the light flux transmitting region and a flat surface on the exit side, and (2) the collimating concave lens is incident on the light transmitting region. (3) The collimating concave lens has a spherical surface on the incident side of the light transmission region, and an aspherical surface on which the exit side has a hyperboloid shape. Either is preferable.
[0015]
According to the present invention, in the case of (1), since the incident side is an aspherical surface having a hyperboloid shape, the light beam is collimated on the incident side of the light beam transmission region of the collimating concave lens and is refracted on the exit side. You can avoid it. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain an emitted light beam having a higher flat altitude. Further, since the exit side is a flat surface, it is possible to produce a collimated concave lens relatively inexpensively.
In the case of (2), since the exit side of the light beam transmission region is an aspherical surface, the diameter of the emitted light beam can be reduced.
Furthermore, since the exit side of the light beam transmission region is an aspherical surface, the in-plane illuminance variation of the emitted light beam can be made relatively small.
In the case of (3), since the exit side of the light flux transmission region is aspherical, the same effect as in (2) can be obtained, and the incident side of the light flux transmission region is spherical, so that light is incident on the incident side. Can be prevented from being refracted, and an outgoing light beam with higher parallelism can be obtained.
[0016]
In the present invention, it is preferable that the condensing lens is an aspherical surface in which the incident side of the light flux transmission region is a flat surface and the exit side has a hyperboloid shape.
According to this invention, since the exit side of the light beam transmission region is aspherical, the aberration of the emitted light beam can be reduced. Therefore, the light beam can be reliably incident on the image forming area of the light modulation device.
[0017]
In the present invention, a polarization conversion element that aligns the polarization direction of the incident light beam is provided between the light beam splitting optical element and the condenser lens, and the polarization conversion element has a phase plate made of crystal or mica. It is preferable.
As described above, since the light beam transmission region of the collimating concave lens and the light beam splitting optical element is reduced, the light beam density is increased, and thus it is necessary to improve the heat resistance of the retardation plate.
According to the present invention, since the retardation plate is made of quartz or mica, the heat resistance of the retardation plate can be improved.
[0018]
A projector according to the present invention includes any one of the illumination optical devices described above.
According to the present invention, it is possible to achieve substantially the same operational effects as the illumination optical device described above. That is, the projector can improve the contrast.
