DFD(Depth Fused 3-D)

[Embodiment 2]
The three-dimensional display device of the present embodiment is a DFD (Depth Fused 3-D) type three-dimensional display device described in Patent Document 1 described above.
First, the principle of a DFD type three-dimensional display device will be described with reference to FIGS.
In the three-dimensional display device of the DFD (Depth Fused 3-D) method, as shown in FIG.
A plurality of transmissive display devices such as transmissive display devices (101, 102) (the transmissive display device 101 is closer to the

In FIG. 3, a liquid crystal display device is used as the transmissive display device (101, 102), and therefore, the case where the light source 110 is arranged at the rearmost position when viewed from the

Hereinafter, the configuration of the depolarizing

In FIG. 9, a high-order wave plate or a scattering plate can be used instead of the quarter wave plate 51.
In the depolarizing
Therefore, the portions other than the quarter-wave plate 51 need to emit while maintaining the polarization of the incident light.
On the other hand, when linearly polarized light is incident on the quarter-wave plate 51, the emitted light becomes circularly polarized light. Therefore, the quarter-wave plate 51 cancels the polarization of the incident light. It is emitted as polarized light. Similarly, even when linearly polarized light is incident on the high-order wave plate, unpolarized light can be emitted.
Further, when linearly polarized light is incident on the scattering plate, the incident light is diffused, so that the scattering plate also depolarizes the incident light and emits it as non-polarized light.
The depolarizing
[0017]
When displaying a moving image on each transmissive display device (111, 112), an
A first example of a depolarizing plate using a liquid crystal panel is a polymer dispersion type liquid crystal panel.
In a polymer dispersion type liquid crystal panel, incident light is diffused when no voltage is applied to the polymer dispersion type liquid crystal, and when a sufficient voltage is applied to the polymer dispersion type liquid crystal, it is dispersed in the polymer. The liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the direction of the electric field and emitted while maintaining the polarization of the incident light.
The above-described diffusion of incident light or transmission of incident light can be controlled for each pixel unit.
Therefore, by controlling the voltage applied to each pixel unit of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal panel according to the position of the moving image displayed on each transmissive display device (111, 112), the
[0018]
As a second example of the depolarizing plate using the liquid crystal panel, as shown in FIG. 10A, the
In a liquid crystal panel having an
The above-described random polarization of incident light or transmission of incident light can be controlled for each pixel.
Therefore, the
[0019]
As a third example of the depolarizing plate using the liquid crystal panel, the product (Δn · d) of the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) of the liquid crystal layer and its thickness (d) is expressed by the following equation (1). It is a liquid crystal panel set as follows.
[Expression 1]
Δn · d = (2n−1) λ / 4 (1)
Here, n is an integer of 1 or more, and λ is the wavelength of incident light.
When the product (Δn · d) of the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) of the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal panel and its thickness (d) is set as in the above-described equation (1), the liquid crystal panel is ¼. Performs the same function as the wave plate.
Therefore, in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the incident linearly polarized light is emitted as circularly polarized light, and when a sufficient voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the electric field direction, The light is emitted while maintaining the polarization of the incident light.
The aforementioned circular polarization of incident light or transmission of incident light can be controlled for each pixel.
Accordingly, the
[0020]
A fourth example of a depolarizing plate using a liquid crystal panel is a liquid crystal panel in which the initial alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules is a random direction for each pixel of a plurality of pixels (hereinafter referred to as pixel blocks) of the liquid crystal panel. is there.
An example is shown in FIG.
FIG. 11A shows a pixel size of a liquid crystal display panel (liquid
In the example shown in FIG. 11, four pixels of the
Then, the orientation directions of the liquid crystal molecules are made different for each of the four pixels of the
Therefore, in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, incident light is emitted as polarized light in a different direction for each pixel, and when a sufficient voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the electric field direction, The light is emitted while maintaining the polarization of the incident light.
The above-described polarization of the incident light in a different direction for each pixel or the transmission of the incident light can be controlled for each pixel.
Accordingly, the
[0021]
FIG. 12 shows another example of a liquid crystal panel in which the initial alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules is a random direction for each pixel of a plurality of pixels (hereinafter referred to as pixel blocks) of the liquid crystal panel.
FIG. 12A shows a pixel size of a liquid crystal display panel 30 (in FIG. 1, the liquid
In the example illustrated in FIG. 12, one pixel of the
In the liquid
Therefore, in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, incident light is emitted as polarized light in a different direction for each pixel, and when a sufficient voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the electric field direction, The light is emitted while maintaining the polarization of the incident light.
The above-described polarization of the incident light in a different direction for each pixel or the transmission of the incident light can be controlled for each pixel.
Accordingly, the
In the above description, the case where the initial alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules is used has been described. However, when a voltage less than the saturation voltage is applied to the pixel, the pixel enters a birefringence state that varies depending on the voltage. Therefore, it goes without saying that the same effect can be obtained even when different voltages are applied to each pixel.
Further, as the above-mentioned liquid crystal panel, TN mode, IPS mode, and STN mode liquid crystals can be used.
[0022]
A fifth example of the depolarizing plate using a liquid crystal panel is a liquid crystal panel in which the initial alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules is vertical alignment.
In a liquid crystal panel in which the initial alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules is vertical alignment, in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the light is emitted while maintaining the polarization of incident light.
In addition, when a sufficient voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the liquid crystal molecules are tilted with respect to the electric field direction because the liquid crystal with Δε (dielectric anisotropy) <0 is used. At this time, the tilting direction can be varied depending on the location of the electrode structure or the like.
Therefore, when a sufficient voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, incident light is emitted as random polarized light (so-called non-polarized light).
The above-described random polarization of incident light or transmission of incident light can be controlled for each pixel.
Therefore, by controlling the voltage applied to each pixel unit of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal panel according to the position of the moving image displayed on each transmissive display device (111, 112), the
By using the depolarizing
In addition, when the selective diffusion plate described in Patent Document 2 is used, the luminance of the diffusion region may increase due to ambient illumination light, which may result in an unnatural display. When the depolarizing
Although the invention made by the present inventor has been specifically described based on the above-described embodiment, the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiment, and various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. Of course.
