DVD系倍率=fsyn1/fobj1、
CD系倍率=fsyn2/fobj2

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical head for recording / reproducing information on / from an optical disk and an optical disk apparatus using the same, and in particular, with high performance capable of recording / reproducing on a plurality of different types of optical disks such as DVD and CD. The present invention relates to a small optical head.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An optical disc is an information medium having features such as non-contact, large capacity, and low cost. Compact discs (hereinafter referred to as CDs) widely used in various applications such as music and computers are recordable discs such as CD-Rs and CD-RWs, in addition to CD-ROMs dedicated to playback. The spread of is also progressing rapidly.
On the other hand, in recent years, large capacity disks such as a digital versatile disk (hereinafter referred to as DVD) having a capacity about seven times that of a CD have appeared. Thus, in the situation where there are a plurality of types of optical disks, there is a strong demand for a DVD / CD compatible optical head and an optical disk apparatus capable of recording and reproducing with respect to the plurality of optical disks with a single apparatus.
[0003]
In order to reproduce a DVD-ROM, a laser light source having a wavelength of 650 nm is necessary, whereas in order to reproduce a CD-R, a laser light source having a wavelength of 780 nm is necessary. This is because the CD-R has a low reflectance near the wavelength of 650 nm. Therefore, it is necessary to mount two laser light sources on the DVD / CD compatible optical head. In order to reduce the size and cost of the optical head, it is desirable to support the two wavelengths with one objective lens. However, DVD and CD are combined with different thicknesses of the disk substrate, so that one objective lens can be used. Therefore, it has been very difficult to achieve DVD / CD compatibility.
On the other hand, an optical head that realizes DVD / CD compatibility with one objective lens by using a specially shaped objective lens is disclosed in O plus E, Vol. 20, No. 3, March 1998, 319- 322 (O plus E, Vol. 20, No. 3, pp. 319 to 322). A DVD / CD compatible optical head that uses the special-shaped objective lens and uses a common detection optical system including a collimator lens in the DVD system and the CD system, which greatly reduces the number of parts of the optical head. And JP-A-2000-82226.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The optical head has the advantage that DVD / CD compatibility can be achieved with a small number of parts by using one objective lens and one collimating lens. However, when either DVD system or CD system is used for recording, The following new problems arise. In the following, the problem of the prior art will be described by taking as an example the case where the DVD system is reproduced and the CD system is recorded and reproduced.
[0005]
Since signals are recorded at a very high density on a DVD, the spot size on the disk needs to be made sufficiently small in order to obtain good reproduction characteristics. For this purpose, the magnification of the DVD optical system (= focal length of collimating lens / focal length of objective lens) needs to be set relatively large.
On the other hand, when recording a signal on a CD-R disc, it is essential to set the light utilization factor of the light beam high in order to efficiently collect the laser power on the disc surface. For this reason, the magnification of the CD optical system needs to be set smaller than the magnification of the DVD optical system. That is, the magnification must be changed greatly between the DVD optical system and the CD optical system while using one objective lens and one collimator lens.
[0006]
Also, in order to reduce the magnification in the CD optical system, if the distance from the collimating lens to the CD laser light source is simply reduced, an optical component such as a dichroic prism is disposed between the collimating lens and the CD laser light source. This also causes a problem that sufficient space cannot be secured.
[0007]
Further, for example, a small optical head corresponding to a small optical disk device for a notebook personal computer has the following problems. As described above, the DVD optical system increases the magnification, so even if the distance from the collimating lens to the DVD laser light source is simply increased, the DVD laser light source does not fit in the small optical head because the mounting space for the optical components is small. The problem of.
Therefore, in order to solve the above-described component mounting problems while ensuring optimum magnifications for the DVD system and the CD system, it is necessary to introduce new optical means for the DVD system and the CD system. .
[0008]
An object of the present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems. By introducing an optimum auxiliary lens into each of the DVD optical system and the CD optical system, a high-performance recording medium compatible with CD-R recording is provided. An object is to provide a compact DVD / CD compatible optical head with high performance.
[0009]

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Embodiments of an optical head according to the present invention and an optical disk apparatus using the same will be described below with reference to the drawings using some examples. In this embodiment, as an example, an optical head and an optical disk apparatus capable of reproducing CD-R recording and CD and DVD will be described.

In this embodiment, the DVD system and the CD system have a high performance by setting the DVD system magnification to 7 times and the CD system magnification to 4 times.

DVD system magnification = fsyn1 / fobj1,
CD magnification = fsyn2 / fobj2

[0025]
Next, the reason why a high-performance optical head can be obtained by setting the DVD and CD magnifications to the above magnification will be described with reference to FIGS.
Normally, when the emitted light of a semiconductor laser is viewed in a cross section perpendicular to the emitted light, the lateral spread (hereinafter referred to as θ //) and the longitudinal spread (θ⊥) are different. Yes. When the divergence angle θ // and θθ are compared, θ // has a smaller angle than θ⊥. For this reason, when the spot diameters on the disks are compared, the spot diameter is larger in the direction of θ // than in the θ⊥ direction. Therefore, in order to improve the jitter characteristics when reproducing a DVD-ROM disc, it is necessary to increase the magnification of the DVD system and sufficiently reduce the spot diameter in the θ // direction.
[0026]
FIG. 3 is a characteristic diagram showing the relationship between magnification and jitter during DVD-ROM playback. In the figure, the horizontal axis indicates the magnification (the combined focal length of the
The values used are θ // = 8 ° (center value), variation: ± 1 °, and the numerical aperture of the objective lens is assumed to be 0.6. 41 indicates a characteristic curve when θ // is 7 °, 42 indicates a characteristic curve when θ // is 8 °, and 43 indicates a characteristic curve when θ // is 9 °.
The jitter becomes smaller as the magnification is increased. A typical target jitter in DVD-ROM disc playback is 10% or less. From the figure, in order to achieve a jitter of 10% or less, the magnification needs to be 6 times or more. However, if the magnification is increased, the utilization efficiency of the laser light is reduced, so it is not realistic to set the magnification excessively. Therefore, in this embodiment, the magnification of the DVD system is set to 7 times.
[0027]
FIG. 4 is a characteristic curve diagram showing the relationship between magnification and coupling in a CD optical system. The horizontal axis indicates the magnification (the combined focal length of the

Optical disk incident light quantity (mW) = product of transmittance of all optical components (including objective lens 9) arranged between laser light source 2b and
The maximum amount of laser light emitted from a laser light source that is currently used for recording a CD-R disc is about 130 mW, and the optical system shown in FIG. The product of the transmittance of the parts is about 60%. On the other hand, in order to cope with CD-
[0029]
In FIG. 4, the values of the laser divergence angles: θ //, θ⊥ of a currently used laser light source for recording a CD-R disc are used, and the relationship between the magnification and the coupling efficiency is shown. Asked. The values used were θ // = 9 ° (center value), variation: ± 1 °, θ⊥ = 17 ° (center value), variation: ± 2 °, and the numerical aperture of the objective lens was 0.5 It is.
4, 45 indicates a characteristic curve when θ // is 8 ° and θ ° is 15 °, 46 indicates a characteristic curve when θ // is 9 ° and θ⊥ is 17 °, and 47 indicates The characteristic curve when θ // is 10 ° and θ⊥ is 19 ° is shown.
From the figure, it is necessary to reduce the magnification of the CD system to 4.7 times or less in order to ensure 39% or more as the coupling efficiency. Therefore, in this embodiment, the magnification of the CD system is set to 4 times.
[0030]
As described above, in the optical head according to the present invention, an auxiliary lens is disposed in each of the DVD system and the CD system, so that an optimum magnification can be secured for each of the DVD system and the CD system while using a common collimating lens. is doing.
When a meniscus lens is used as a DVD auxiliary lens, the meniscus lens has two lens surfaces. Compared to the case where a normal biconcave or plano-concave lens is used, from the collimating lens to the DVD laser. The distance can be reduced.
On the other hand, in this embodiment, a plano-convex lens is used as an auxiliary lens for the CD system and a diffraction grating is formed on the plane side thereof, so that the plano-convex lens and the diffraction grating can be made into one component. In addition to the reduction, a space for mounting optical components is secured between the collimating lens and the CD laser.
[0031]
As a result, a DVD / CD compatible optical head with high performance and compact CD-R recording is realized for both DVD and CD systems.
The shape of the auxiliary lens shown in FIG. 1 is an example, and the shape of the lens is not particularly specified. For example, if a meniscus lens is used in the CD system as in the DVD system, the mounting space between the collimating lens and the CD laser can be further expanded without changing the magnification.
[0032]
Next, another embodiment of the present invention different from the above will be described in detail with reference to FIG.
FIG. 5 is a schematic view showing another embodiment of the optical system of the optical head according to the present invention. In the figure, the same reference numerals are assigned to optical components of the same type as in FIG.
In FIG. 5, 2a is a laser light source that oscillates near a wavelength of 655 nm, 2b is a laser light source that oscillates near a wavelength of 785 nm, 3a is a quarter wavelength plate for a wavelength of 655 nm, 3b is a quarter wavelength plate for a wavelength of 785 nm, 4c and Reference numeral 4b denotes an auxiliary lens. 14 is a composite prism, 7 is a collimating lens, 8 is an actuator, 9 is an objective lens, 10 is an optical disk, 11 is a detection lens, 12 is a photodetector, 13 is a front monitor, and 18 and 19 are diffraction gratings.
