Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a novel ferroelectric liquid crystal compound and a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition comprising the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Liquid crystal displays are thin, lightweight, have low power consumption and are highly portable, and have a wider range of application fields than other types of flat panel displays, making them suitable for various end products such as watches, calculators, personal computers, and televisions. It's being used. Currently, TN type, STN type, and TFT type drive systems are mainly used for liquid crystal displays. On the other hand, a new display technology called a light valve using ferroelectric liquid crystal, a so-called ferroelectric liquid crystal display, has appeared. This is characterized by high-speed response and memory performance 100 times that of the TN type, and is attracting attention as a next-generation liquid crystal technology. The currently known ferroelectric liquid crystals are smectic C phase and smectic I phase in which mesogen is tilted in the smectic layer, and mesogen is tilted in the smectic layer, but the mesogen tilt between layers is alternately reversed. It is prepared by mixing an optically active group (chiral component) into a liquid crystal compound that forms a smectic CA phase facing the surface. That is, these chiral smectic C phase, chiral smectic I phase, and chiral smectic CA phase exhibit ferroelectricity because the symmetry of the smectic structure is lowered by the chiral component.
[0003]
Ferroelectricity means that this spontaneous polarization can be reversed by an external electric field when permanent dipole moments are aligned in the same direction even when no electric field is applied from the outside. It has been pointed out that a ferroelectric liquid crystal phase is developed by introducing asymmetric carbon, and various attempts have been made to obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal. As a result, the introduction of asymmetric carbon lowers the symmetry of the system and breaks the inversion symmetry. Therefore, the introduction of optically active groups has been considered essential for the development of ferroelectric liquid crystals.
[0004]
However, since optically active substances are generally expensive and often accompanied by difficulty in synthesis, they are inferior in mass productivity. Furthermore, since such a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition contains an optically active group in the molecular structure, the liquid crystal phase to be formed has a spiral property. The dipole generated in the system becomes isotropic due to this spirality, and the generated spontaneous polarization disappears. Spontaneous polarization that would normally occur in the order of 100 to 200 nC / cm 2 due to this helical property is a low value when actually measured. The spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds synthesized up to now is generally 10 to 50 nC / cm 2 .
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The present invention is to solve the problems associated with the prior art as described above, and is a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting excellent ferroelectricity with high spontaneous polarization without introducing an optically active group. It is intended to provide a composition.
[0006]

[0044]
In the compound of the above formula (1), the carbon atom located at the center of the bent chain is centered, and in the compound of the formula (2), it is axisymmetric about the oxygen atom located at the center of the bent chain. A linking group, a mesogenic group, and a terminal chain are arranged. For this reason, it becomes a symmetrical structure which does not contain a chiral component in the molecule, and exhibits high spontaneous polarization.
[0045]
The ferroelectric liquid crystal compound of the present invention can be prepared from a known starting compound using a known reaction.
[0046]
The novel ferroelectric liquid crystal composition according to the present invention forms a double smectic CA phase in the liquid crystal formation temperature range. Such a double smectic CA phase can have ferroelectricity due to the symmetry of the system even if no asymmetric carbon is contained. In other words, in such a system, a two-fold axis is generated in a direction perpendicular to the molecular long axis and there is no mirror surface perpendicular to this, so the symmetry is C2v crystallographically, which is spontaneous in the two-axis direction. Symmetry that can be polarized and become ferroelectric. By controlling the symmetry from the shape of the molecule as described above, ferroelectricity can be expressed even in a non-optically active molecule that does not contain an optically active group.
[0047]
The ferroelectric liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a sharp phase reflection derived from the smectic CA phase in the alignment axis direction and a disorder of molecules in the smectic CA phase in the axis direction perpendicular to the alignment axis, as determined by X-ray diffraction measurement. Diffuse reflections due to filling appear 25 degrees apart. Further, sharp (001) reflection and (002) reflection appear in the alignment axis direction. This is derived from the period of the molecular length and a half of the molecular length, respectively, and is a phase reflection peculiar to the double smectic CA phase.
[0048]
The ferroelectric liquid crystal compound of the present invention can be used alone or in combination of two or more as a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition as a display such as a liquid crystal monitor.

(Structural formula and characteristic test results)
Next, Table 1 shows the structural formulas of the compounds of Examples 1 to 4 and the property test results of the compounds.
[0060]
The above characteristics were tested as follows.
[0061]
(1) Phase transition temperature:
The phase transition temperature was measured by PYRIS type 1 DSC (differential thermal analysis) manufactured by PerkinElmer. Phase states are indicated using the following abbreviations:
[0062]
K: Crystal S CAb : Double smectic CA phase I: Isotropic phase (2) Spontaneous polarization:
Spontaneous polarization in the double smectic CA phase was measured by the triangular wave method (± 10.0 μm −1 · 1 Hz).
[0063]
(3) Confirmation of double smectic CA phase:
Using an X-ray generator R-axis manufactured by Rigaku Denki Co., Ltd., exposure was performed with a nickel filter, and measurement was performed using CuKα rays excluding Kβ rays. A flat camera was used as the camera. After aligning the measurement sample on the glass thin film within the liquid crystal formation temperature range, the sample was mounted on a hot stage and directly placed on an X-ray generator, and sharp (001) reflection and (002) reflection in the alignment axis direction were measured.

【The invention's effect】
Since the ferroelectric liquid crystal compound and the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition according to the present invention have a bent chain having a symmetric structure that does not contain a chiral component, the phase transition behavior temperature, which is the difference between the crystal and the isotropic phase, is wide. High spontaneous polarization is exhibited in the temperature range, and the spontaneous polarization is 2 to 4 times as high as that of a general ferroelectric liquid crystal compound, and forms a double smectic CA phase. Furthermore, since no optically active substance is introduced, mass production is easy.
