Description
【0001】

単純マトリクス型の液晶表示装置や、有機EL(ElectroLuminescence)素子や無機EL素子、CRT(Cathode−Ray Tube)等が表示装置として用いられてもよい。
【0043】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical sensor that detects the intensity of incident light and a display device including the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Many electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and portable televisions include a liquid crystal display device as a display device that displays predetermined information. The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display panel composed of two substrates and liquid crystal sealed between the two substrates. For example, a transmissive or transflective liquid crystal display device is used for a mobile phone. The transmissive liquid crystal display device illuminates a liquid crystal display panel with a backlight disposed on the back surface thereof. A transflective liquid crystal display device illuminates a liquid crystal panel with a backlight to perform transmissive display as in the transmissive type, and performs reflective display using external light in a bright place. The backlight is turned on for a predetermined time when a button of the mobile phone is operated. Thereby, the liquid crystal display device of the cellular phone can obtain a display screen that is easy to see even in a dark place.
[0003]
However, since the backlight is lit with the same emission luminance regardless of the ambient brightness, it may be too bright in a dark place. In particular, in a mobile phone having a web browser function or the like, as a result of intermittent button operation, the backlight continues to be lit for a long time, so that unnecessary power is wasted.
[0004]
On the other hand, in a place where the surroundings are bright, the contrast of the display image displayed on the display screen of the liquid crystal display device due to reflection of external light (visible light) from the outside reflected by the surface of the display screen and entering the eyes of the observer Will be difficult to see.

An object of the present invention is to provide an optical sensor for controlling the display screen to a brightness that is easy for an observer to view while realizing power saving, and a display device including the optical sensor.
[0015]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The above object is an optical sensor that is disposed in the vicinity of a housing of an electronic device having a display screen for displaying predetermined information and has a light receiving surface that detects the intensity of incident light. This is achieved by an optical sensor arranged to detect the intensity of light incident at an angle less than the incident angle.
[0016]
In the optical sensor of the present invention, the light receiving surface is arranged so that light incident at an angle larger than the incident angle is shielded by the housing. In the optical sensor of the present invention, the light receiving surface is disposed on the inner side of the housing surface. Further, in the optical sensor according to the present invention, the light receiving surface is arranged such that light incident at an angle larger than the incident angle is shielded by a light shielding wall formed around the light receiving surface. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An optical sensor according to an embodiment of the present invention and a display device including the same will be described with reference to FIGS. First, the basic principle of the present invention will be described using a liquid crystal display device as an example. The contrast of the display image displayed on the display screen of the liquid crystal display device is reduced by the incident light from the outside. The incident light to the display screen is reflected mainly on the surface of the display screen, and the reflected light (visible light) is This is for the eyes of the observer. Therefore, the light emission luminance of the backlight may be controlled based on the intensity of the reflected light. Therefore, assuming a range of angles at which the observer views the display screen, only light (particularly visible light) incident on the display screen within the range of the angles may be detected by the optical sensor.
[0022]
On the other hand, the liquid crystal display panel of the liquid crystal display device has viewing angle characteristics, and a display image having a predetermined contrast cannot be obtained from an angle larger than the maximum viewing angle. Therefore, if the predetermined incident angle is determined based on the maximum viewing angle at which a display image with a predetermined contrast is obtained, and the emission luminance of the backlight is controlled based on the intensity of light incident at an angle equal to or smaller than the incident angle, A display device having a display screen that is easy for an observer to see can be realized.
[0023]
Next, the structure of the photosensor according to this embodiment and the display device including the photosensor will be described with reference to FIGS.
