本発明は、車両衝突時における乗員の内装品への2次衝突を防止するためのエアバッグ装置に係わり、特に、展開初期の早い段階で乗員拘束面を形成する技術に関する。

【従来の技術】
従来より、車両衝突時に乗員を車両と共に減速させて、車室内の構造物への2次衝突や車外放出を防止することを目的とした乗員保護装置(SRS)として、車両の衝突を感知するセンサ,センサからの信号に基づき衝突の程度を判断する制御装置,乗員を受け止めるバッグ,及びバッグを膨らませるインフレータ(ガス発生器)を主たる構成要素とするエアバッグ装置が知られている。

図9は、ステアリングホイールに収納される運転席用のエアバッグモジュールの一従来例を示す斜視図、図10は、インストルメントパネルに収納される助手席用のエアバッグモジュールの一従来例を示す斜視図である。
バッグ1,2は、2枚又は複数枚の基布パネル3,4から袋状に構成されていて、リテーナ7,8内に折り畳まれていたバッグ1,2にインフレータ5,6からのガスが流入することによって、バッグ1,2が膨張して乗員を受け止める。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところが、従来のバッグ1,2は、展開中のバッグ容積が常に一定であったため、インフレータ5,6からの流入ガス量が不十分な展開初期の段階では、バッグ内圧が上がらず、乗員の拘束性能が大幅に低下するという問題があった。
また、バッグ1,2には、乗員を受け止めた後の反発を防ぐベントホール9が設けられているため、そこからのガスリークもバッグ内圧の上昇を妨げる原因になっていた。

本発明は、このような事情に鑑みてなされたものであり、その目的とするところは、展開初期の早い段階で乗員拘束面を形成することのできるエアバッグ装置を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記課題を解決するために、本発明は、車両の衝突を感知するセンサからの信号に基づきインフレータ(24)を点火し、バッグ(22,61)を展開させることにより乗員(28)を拘束するエアバッグ装置であって、前記バッグ内部が、セパレータ(43,64)により最初に展開する第1の部屋(41)と、次に展開する第2の部屋(42)との少なくとも2つに分割されるものにおいて、前記第1の部屋を前記セパレータの上面側に設けると共に、前記第1の部屋以外の部屋に前記バッグからガスを流出させるベントホール(44)を設け、前記バッグを、チューブ状のバッグ本体を折り曲げて形成し、相互対向 させられるバッグ表面の一部によってセパレータを構成したことを特徴とする。

この構成では、セパレータによって、展開初期から中期のバッグ容積が規制されるため、展開初期の早い段階で乗員拘束面(46)を形成するのに十分な程度にまでバッグ内圧を上昇させることができる。
また、展開初期に発生するベントホールからのガスリークを低減し得るので、バッグ内圧を容易に上昇させることができる。

【発明の実施の形態】
次に、図面を用いて、本発明の実施の形態について説明する。
以下に説明するエアバッグ装置は、車両の衝突を感知するセンサ,センサからの信号に基づき衝突の程度を判断する制御装置,乗員を受け止めるバッグ,及びバッグを膨らませるインフレータを主たる構成要素とし、センサが車両の衝突を感知すると、制御装置が衝突の程度を判断し、その判断結果に基づき、インフレータを点火してガスを発生させ、膨らませたバッグにより乗員を保護するものである。

本実施の形態による助手席用のエアバッグモジュール20は、図7の分解斜視図に示すように、リッド21,バッグ22,リテーナ23,及びインフレータ24からなり、リテーナ23内にインフレータ24及び展開前のバッグ22が折り畳まれた状態で収容され、かつ、リテーナ23の上部開口がリッド21によって閉塞されるよう、車両26のインストルメントパネル27に取り付けられている(図8)。

インフレータ24は、バッグ22を膨張させるためのガス発生器であり、窒素,アルゴン等の不活性ガスを高圧充填しておき、これを瞬時に開放してバッグを膨張させる気体式,火薬等の固体のガス発生剤(推薬)を燃焼させ、その燃焼ガスによってバッグを膨張させる固体式,これら気体式と固体式とを組み合わせ、高圧容器の封板を破ると同時に少量の推薬を燃焼させてガスを発生させるハイブリッド式等がある。

例えば、固体式のインフレータ24にあっては、衝突を感知したセンサ(図示略)から制御装置(図示略)へ信号が送られると、制御装置での演算結果が出力信号として点火器(図示略)に送られ、点火器が作動する。
すると、推薬が燃焼して燃焼ガスが発生し、この燃焼ガスがガス孔32を通過してバッグ22内に流入するため、折り畳まれたバッグ22が膨張しながらリッド21を開き、車室内に展開されることになる(図8)。

〔参考例〕
ここで、まず本願発明のベースとする技術を含む参考例を図1〜図4に基づいて説明する。
この参考例のバッグ22は、図4の斜視外観図に示すように、複数枚の基布パネル22aを略袋状に組み合わせることによって構成されている。
また、バッグ22の内部には、図1及び図2に示すように、膨張過程にあるバッグ22の内部を、最初に展開する第1の部屋41と、次に展開する第2の部屋42とに分割するセパレータ43が設けられており、第2の部屋42には、バッグ22内からガスを流出させるベントホール44が設けられている。

セパレータ43は、ガス流入部45の下側に片持ち固定されていて、図1に示す展開初期から中期にかけては、バッグ22の内底面に載置された状態になっているため、インフレータ24からの流入ガスは、セパレータ43の上面側、すなわち、第1の部屋41を流通し、その後、乗員拘束面46の内側で流向をUターンさせられて、セパレータ43の下面側、すなわち、第2の部屋42に導入される(図2)。

このように、この参考例によるエアバッグ装置にあっては、ガス流入部45から乗員拘束面46へと延びるセパレータ43によって、展開初期から中期のバッグ容積を規制したので、展開初期の早い段階で乗員拘束面46を形成するのに十分な程度にまでバッグ内圧を上昇させることができる。
よって、バッグ展開時間が不十分な、インストルメントパネル27に比較的近接して乗車している乗員28に対しても、優れた乗員保護性能を確保することができる。

また、ベントホール44を最初に展開する第1の部屋41側に設けずに、次に展開する第2の部屋42側に設けているため、展開初期のベントホール44からのガスリークを効果的に低減して、バッグ内圧を容易に上昇させることが可能になったので、より少ないガス出力で従来と同等の乗員拘束性能を得ることができる。

[本発明の実施の形態]
次に、図5及び図6を用いて、本発明の実施の形態によるエアバッグ装置を説明する。
本実施の形態に係るバッグ61では、両端が開口端62及び閉塞端63とされたチューブ状のバッグ本体がその途中で略180゜折り曲げられた状態となってリテーナ23に固定されており、その状態で相互対向させられるバッグ表面の一部61Aによってセパレータ62が構成されている。

すなわち、本実施の形態によるエアバッグ装置は、チューブ状をなすバッグ61の一部を利用してセパレータ64を構成した点に特徴があり、袋状をなすバッグ22内にそれとは別個にセパレータ43を設けるようにした参考例によるエアバッグ装置とは、構成が大きく相違する。

この構成では、バッグ61の開口端62から折曲部65にかけて第1の部屋41が形成され、折曲部65から閉塞端63にかけて第2の部屋42が形成されているため、これに対応して、バッグ61内からガスを流出させるベントホール44も第2の部屋42に相当する折曲部65から閉塞端63の間に設けている。
この構成によっても、参考例と同様の効果を得ることができる。

【発明の効果】
以上の説明から明らかなように、本発明によれば、以下の効果を得ることができる。
(1)セパレータによって、展開初期から中期のバッグ容積が規制されるため、展開初期の早い段階で乗員拘束面を形成するのに十分な程度にまでバッグ内圧を上昇させ得て、優れた乗員保護性能を確保することができる。
