Description
【0001】

AB=τ1,BC=τ2,FG=t4,GH=t5。
【0047】
【0059】
τ1=30,τ2=30,
t1=10,t2=2,t3=2,t4=3,t5=11,t6=8,t7=2,t8=8,t9=8,
Vp=35,Va=33,Vb=30
【0060】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an inkjet printer that performs recording on a recording sheet by ejecting ink droplets from a nozzle portion, and a recording head driving apparatus and method for an inkjet printer.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, ink jet printers that perform recording on recording paper by ejecting ink droplets from nozzle portions that communicate with an ink chamber have become widespread. Conventionally, in this type of ink jet printer, one piezoelectric element is provided corresponding to one nozzle. For example, the piezoelectric element is fixed to a vibration plate that forms an outer wall of an ink chamber to which ink is supplied via an ink flow path, and is bent in accordance with a voltage waveform of an applied drive signal, whereby the ink chamber The volume of the ink was changed to generate a discharge pressure, and the ink pressure could be discharged from the nozzle by this discharge pressure.
[0003]
In this type of ink jet printer, the volume of the ink chamber is changed to generate the discharge pressure as described above, so that the ink discharged from the nozzles has a columnar shape (with a tail). The flying ink causes a time difference and a speed difference between the head portion and the tail portion of the flying ink. For this reason, minute satellite-like unnecessary ink droplets (hereinafter referred to as satellite droplets) are generated in association with the preceding main ink droplets, and an undesired printing result is generated by landing on the recording paper. . In this case, the generation of satellite droplets in a dark image that is recorded with relatively large ink droplets does not have a significant effect on the image quality, but small ink droplets are used as in the case of expressing an image with a low density or an intermediate gradation image. When recording is performed, it is expected that the image quality will be significantly lowered due to the generation of satellite droplets. Therefore, the generation of satellite droplets becomes a big problem especially when ejecting small-sized ink droplets.
[0004]
In order to deal with this problem, several measures have been proposed in the past. For example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 7-76087 proposes a method in which one piezoelectric element is provided for each nozzle, and ink droplet ejection is performed by switching the change rate of the ejection voltage applied to the piezoelectric element in two stages. ing. As shown in FIG. 10, this method initially increases the discharge voltage at the first voltage change rate v1, and increases the discharge voltage at the second voltage change rate v2 larger than v1 from the middle. It is. In FIG. 10, the vertical axis represents voltage and the horizontal axis represents time. According to this method, since the ink is continuously ejected while following the head portion of the ink ejected first, the speed difference between the head portion and the tail portion of the ink column is reduced, and the satellite is reduced. Drops are less likely to occur.
[0005]
For example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 59-133067 proposes a method in which one piezoelectric element is provided for one nozzle, and two voltage pulses independent of each other are applied to the piezoelectric element to eject ink droplets. ing. In this method, as shown in FIG. 11, first, the first pulse P1 is applied to the piezoelectric element to cause the first pressure fluctuation to start the ejection of ink droplets from the nozzle, and then the first pulse After the pulse P1, the second pulse P2 is applied to the piezoelectric element before the ink droplet is ejected from the nozzle to cause the second pressure fluctuation. In FIG. 11, the vertical axis represents voltage and the horizontal axis represents time. According to this method, the ink column ejected from the nozzle is broken early, and satellite droplets are less likely to be generated.
[0006]
For example, in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 51-45931, two pressure generating means are provided for one nozzle, and ink is vibrated by superimposing vibrations from these two pressure generating means. There has been proposed an ink droplet discharge device that discharges ink.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the method described in the above-mentioned Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 7-76087, the first voltage change rate v1 must be made smaller than the second voltage change rate v2. For this reason, compared with the case where the voltage is changed at a high voltage change rate v2 over the entire discharge stroke, the flying speed of the ejected ink droplets has to be reduced. The drop in the ink droplet speed leads to instability of ejection such as a deterioration in the linearity of the flight route and variations in the flight speed. Therefore, there is a possibility that a recording dot shift occurs and the print quality is lowered.
[0008]
Further, in the method described in the above Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 59-133067, after the first pulse P1 is finished, the second pulse P2 is applied at a certain time interval Ti. Therefore, if this time interval Ti is large, the tail of the ink column becomes long and it becomes difficult to prevent the generation of satellite droplets. On the other hand, if the time interval Ti is small, the piezoelectric element cannot follow the voltage change and the desired operation cannot be obtained. This is because, in general, a piezoelectric element has inherent vibration characteristics and cannot operate at a frequency higher than its natural frequency. This point can be solved by manufacturing a piezoelectric element having a high natural frequency. However, even if the natural frequency of the piezoelectric element is increased, there is a limit to this, and there is a difficulty in manufacturing technology. This is not realistic because it leads to high costs. In the description of the above publication, the voltage value V2 of the second pulse P2 is smaller than the voltage value V1 of the first pulse P1, but the trailing part is caught up with the head part of the ink column and integrated. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to make the voltage value V2 of the second pulse P2 larger than the voltage value V1 of the first pulse P1. However, increasing the voltage applied to the piezoelectric element is expected to shorten the life of the piezoelectric element and the diaphragm excited by the piezoelectric element, and increase the residual vibration to deteriorate the frequency characteristics. In addition, the ink droplet ejection apparatus described in the above Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 51-45931 is intended to efficiently eject ink droplets with a small power input. High-frequency drive signals are respectively applied to the two pressure generating means, and the phase difference and amplitude of these high-frequency drive signals are changed, so that the vibrations from the two pressure generating means are superposed to vibrate the ink. Drops are ejected. That is, this ink droplet ejection device is not intended to prevent the generation of satellite droplets, and does not have a configuration for that purpose. There is no such suggestion.
[0010]
Thus, conventionally, satellites are not subject to reductions in the flying speed of ejected ink droplets, shortening of device life, deterioration of frequency characteristics, etc., and without being restricted by the natural vibration characteristics of piezoelectric elements. It was difficult to sufficiently suppress the generation of droplets.
[0011]
In order to solve these problems, the present applicant has provided a piezoelectric element for ejecting ink droplets for each ink chamber corresponding to each nozzle and a piezoelectric element for suppressing satellite droplet generation separately from these piezoelectric elements. There has been proposed an ink jet printer that appropriately controls the drive timing of elements. According to this ink jet printer, it is possible to suppress the generation of satellite droplets during ink droplet ejection while overcoming the above-described problems.
[0012]
However, in the ink jet printer having such a configuration, for example, when the ink droplet ejection piezoelectric element, which is one of the piezoelectric elements, is displaced in the ink chamber contraction direction for ejection, the pressure in the ink chamber increases. Since it is immediately transmitted to the piezoelectric element for suppressing satellite droplet generation, which is the other piezoelectric element, the piezoelectric element for suppressing satellite droplet generation may be displaced in the ink chamber expansion direction. That is, the ink chamber contracts due to the displacement of the ink droplet discharge piezoelectric element, and at the same time, the ink chamber expands due to the displacement of the satellite droplet generation suppressing piezoelectric element. For this reason, a part of the shrinkage amount of the ink chamber is offset by the expansion amount, so that the substantial shrinkage amount of the ink chamber does not reach the predetermined amount, and the desired ejection pressure may not be obtained. In this case, the amount of deviation from the planned ejection pressure is not necessarily uniform, and varies depending on the voltage waveform applied to the piezoelectric element for ejecting ink droplets. As a result, the ejection pressure may vary randomly from the planned value. is there. This is also the case when the pressure for suppressing satellite droplet generation is generated by the piezoelectric element for suppressing satellite droplet generation, and the pressure for suppressing satellite droplet generation may vary randomly from the planned value. is there.
[0013]
Such variations in ejection pressure cause variations in the size and ejection speed of ink droplets, and variations in the pressure for suppressing the generation of satellite droplets result in the inability to sufficiently suppress the generation of satellite droplets. Accordingly, there arises a problem that the desired high-quality image representation becomes difficult.
[0014]
The present invention has been made in view of such problems, and an object thereof is to overcome variations in the ink droplet ejection state together with auxiliary operations such as suppression of satellite droplet generation during ink droplet ejection while overcoming the above-described problems. It is an object of the present invention to provide an ink jet printer capable of performing a stable ejection operation with a reduced amount of ink and a recording head driving apparatus and method for an ink jet printer.

A recording head driving method for an ink jet printer according to the present invention includes a nozzle unit for ejecting ink droplets, a first ink chamber that communicates with the nozzle unit and supplies ink to the nozzle unit, and communicates with the nozzle unit. A second ink chamber for supplying ink, a first pressure generating means for generating pressure by changing the volume of the first ink chamber by being displaced in the first ink chamber, and a second ink A method for driving a recording head for an ink-jet printer comprising a second pressure generating means that generates pressure by changing the volume of a second ink chamber by being displaced in a chamber, the first pressure A step of applying a main drive signal for generating a pressure for ejecting ink droplets from the nozzle portion to the generating unit, and a step of applying to the second pressure generating unitSuppresses the generation of incidental ink droplets during ink droplet ejectionAnd a step of applying an auxiliary drive signal for generating the pressure to be generated.
[0019]
In the ink jet printer according to the present invention, two ink chambers, a first ink chamber and a second ink chamber, are provided for one nozzle portion. Among these, the first ink chamber is provided with discharge pressure generating means, and the second ink chamber is provided with auxiliary pressure generating means. That is, the ink chamber for generating ejection pressure and the ink chamber for generating auxiliary pressure are independent. For this reason, it becomes possible to suppress that the pressure fluctuation by the displacement of one pressure generation means is influenced by presence of the other pressure generation means.
[0020]
In another ink jet printer according to the present invention, the first ink chambers and the second ink chambers are alternately arranged in a staggered manner across the arrangement of the nozzle portions, and the first ink chambers and the second ink chambers are arranged. The arrangement is such that they are not adjacent to each other in the arrangement direction. Thereby, crosstalk (mutual interference) of pressure fluctuations between the first ink chambers and between the second ink chambers is reduced.
[0021]
In the drive apparatus or method for a recording head for an ink jet printer according to the present invention, a main drive signal for generating ink droplet discharge pressure is applied to the first pressure generating means provided in the first ink chamber. An auxiliary drive signal for generating auxiliary pressure is applied to a second pressure generating means provided in a second ink chamber separate from the first ink chamber. For this reason, the pressure fluctuation caused by the displacement of one of the pressure generating means is less affected by the presence of the other pressure generating means.

Further, a process (from C to D) in which the drive voltage is changed from the pull-in voltage Vp1 to the reference voltage 0V is a first process, and a time required for this process is t1. While the present invention has been described with reference to the embodiment, the present invention is not limited to this embodiment and can be variously changed. For example, in the above-described embodiment, the
[0069]
For example, as a result of observing a change in the meniscus position of the ink after ejection by the ejection piezoelectric element, the present applicant has found that the meniscus position is large even after the short-period vibration of the ejection piezoelectric element has almost disappeared. It has been confirmed that fluctuations (long-period residual vibration) are exhibited, and it is proposed to drive the auxiliary piezoelectric element at an appropriate timing in order to suppress such residual meniscus vibration. Even in such a case, two ink chambers are provided, a discharge piezoelectric element is provided in one ink chamber, and an auxiliary piezoelectric element for suppressing residual vibration is provided in the other ink chamber. Mutual pressure interference between the ink chambers due to the displacement operation of the piezoelectric element can be reduced.
[0070]
In addition, when the ink droplet is ejected for the first time after the apparatus is started up, or when the ink droplet is ejected from a nozzle that has not been ejected for a long period of time, the applicant preliminarily applies a preliminary meniscus to the meniscus before ejection. An ink jet printer has been proposed in which discharge from the nozzles can be smoothly performed by applying a small vibration. In such a printer as well, two ink chambers are provided, one of the ink chambers is provided with an ejection piezoelectric element, and the other ink chamber is provided with an auxiliary piezoelectric element for performing preliminary vibration. Mutual pressure interference between the ink chambers due to the displacement operation of the element can be reduced.

In the above embodiment, as shown in FIG. 4, all of the ejection
[0072]
In the above-described embodiment, the case where two ink chambers are provided for one nozzle has been described. However, for example, three or more ink chambers are provided radially for one nozzle, and each of these ink chambers has a respective one. You may make it arrange | position the piezoelectric element which plays a role. By doing so, it is possible to perform more various auxiliary operations while reducing pressure interference between each other. In this case, the volume of each ink chamber and the displacement capability of each piezoelectric element may be equal to each other or different from each other.
