同時係属中の米国特許出願、出願番号(UTCドケット番号第R−3630)、名称“光ファイバブラッググレーティングによるコーティング消滅検出”は、本願に関連する内容を有している。
技術分野
本発明は、スマート構造体、より詳細には、光による浸食検出に関する。
発明の背景
光温度センサ技術及び光歪みセンサ技術の分野では、構造体の表面または表面内部に沿ってセンサを分散させることは周知となっている。この様なセンサは、上記構造体の種々のポイントに誘発された応力情報を与え、上記構造体の疲労、寿命、メンテナンス修理サイクルについての情報を与えるようになっている。これらを機能させている上記センサ一体型構造及びその光学系並びにエレクトロニクスは、“スマート構造体”として知られている。このようなシステムの一つとして、同時係属中の米国特許出願出願番号第08/207,993、名称“埋設型光歪み及び温度測定センサケーブル”に開示のものを挙げることができる。
構造体内における歪み及び温度の測定に加えて、構造部品の浸食に関する情報を得て、通常使用に耐えなくなる時点を決定する要求があった。例えば、航空機の機体または翼に沿って極限的なストレスが加えられている点に浸食が生じていると、構造破壊が生じることになる。
従って、構造材料中において浸食を検出するためのセンサが要求されていた。
発明の開示
本発明の目的は、浸食を検出するための光学的センサを提供することにある。
本発明に従えば、光センサは、光学的キャビティを形成する光ファイバと、この光ファイバに埋設され、それぞれのグレーティングが中心反射波長を有し、上記光学的キャビティを画成している対となった反射型ブラッググレーティングと、このファイバグレーティングのそれぞれの中心波長に応じて、光共振器を形成するような寸法とされた上記キャビティの光路長及び伝搬損失と、上記キャビティの周囲にあり、このキャビティにわたって形成された所定厚の材料コーティングと、を有していて、上記コーティングは、上記キャビティの全体の屈折率を変化させるように上記キャビティに径方向内側に向かって力を加え、上記キャビティの光路長を変化させることで上記共振器を発振させないようにしており、上記キャビティに加えられる力が、上記コーティングが少なくとも一部消滅すると低減して、上記共振器の共振を生じさせるようにされている。
さらに本発明によれば、上記コーティングによる力は、上記キャビティの周囲に、かつ、これに沿って不均一に分布しているので、上記キャビティの屈曲率変化に変調を与えて、上記キャビティの光学的効率を減少させるようになっている。
本発明は、スマート構造体技術の進歩をもたらすものである。このスマート構造体によれば、アルミニウムと言った材料によってコーティングされたファイバ状の導波路である光キャビティが、光路長に変化を与え、導波路特性に変化を与えることを見出し、これが構造体内の浸食検出を可能とするものである。本発明は、軽量、安価、及び取り付け容易でさらに浸食に対して高感度であることを特徴としている。さらに、上記センサは、同様にファイバブラッググレーティングを用いる例えば温度センサ/歪みセンサ等、容易に別のスマートセンサ技術と組み合わせることができる。さらに、上記のような検出において共振器キャビティを用いることによって、極めて高感度の検出を行うことを可能とするものである。
上記目的及びその他の目的、本発明の特徴及び効果については、図面をもって説明する本発明の代表的実施例の詳細な説明によって明確となろう。
【図面の簡単な説明】
図1は、本発明に従い、共振器キャビティを画成している2つのブラッググレーティングの間がアルミニウムコーティングによってコートされた光ファイバを示している。
図2は、コアと、クラッドと、アルミニウムコーティングと、を示した本発明の光ファイバグレーティングの断面図である。
発明の最良の実施形態
図1を参照すると、光源10は、光信号12をビームスプリッタ14に与えており、このビームスプリッタ14は、上記光ファイバ18へと所定量の光線16を通過させている。上記光信号16は,上記光ファイバ18の上記コア内に形成された第一のファイバブラッググレーティング20へと入射する。ファイバブラッググレーティングは、狭い波長幅の光を反射させ、それ以外の光を通過させるように周囲的に屈折率に変化を与えたものであり、グレン(Glenn)等に与えられた米国特許第4,725,110号において開示のように狭い波長反射プロファイルを示すものである。上記グレーティング20は、光線21のうち狭い波長幅部分を反射させ、ライン24で示すようにその残りの波長を通過させる。上記光線24は、ファイバ領域26に沿って、上記ファイバ18に埋設されている第二のグレーティング30へと伝搬し、狭い波長幅部分の光線32を反射させるとともに、ライン34で示すようにその残りの波長を透過させている。上記光線34は、上記ファイバ18から射出され、検出器35に入射し、入射する上記光線24の強度を示した電気的信号をライン36に与えるようになっている。同様にして、出力光線22は、上記グレーティング共振器対20,30(後述する)から、上記ファイバ18に沿って射出され、上記光線の所定部分37を反射させるビームスプリッタ14に入射し、検出器38へと入射する。上記検出器38は、入射した上記光線37の強度を示した電気信号39を与えるようになっている。また、上記ファイバの領域26は、例えばアルミニウムのコーティング40によって包囲されている(コーティング方法については後述する)。
図2を参照すると、上記ファイバグレーティング26の断面は、直径約6〜9ミクロンのゲルマニアドープシリカのファイバコア42を有している。上記コア42を取り囲んで直径約125ミクロンの純シリカのファイバクラッド44が設けられている。上記クラッド44を取り囲んで、アルミニウムの外側コーティング40が設けられており、これは、約196ミクロンの外径を有している。上記コア、クラッド及びコーティングについて異なった材料及び直径は、上記ファイバ共振器の動作及び特性上の要求に合致するものであれば所望により用いることができる。
アルミニウムコーティング40は、上記ファイバクラッド44及び上記ファイバコア42にライン46で示されているように加えられている径方向の径方向内向き圧(力)を発生させている。上記コーティング40によって加えられる全体の平均的な圧力は、上記ファイバの領域26の実効屈折率nを全体として平均に変化させ、上記2つのグレーティング20,30の間の上記光路長に影響を与えている。
上記グレーティング20,30は、対として与えられ、同一の中心長においてピーク反射率を有しており、上記2つのグレーティング20,30の間の上記ファイバ18の領域26において、光学的共振キャビティを画成している。上記キャビティは、高いフィネス又は高いQ値の狭帯域共振応答性を有しているファブリ−ペロー共振器を用いることもできる。上記2つのグレーティング20,30及び上記共振器キャビティ26は、上記グレーティング20,30の中心反射波長において光学的共振器として動作し、上記キャビティ26の上記光路長は、良く知られているように光学的に共振するように予め設定されている。さらに、共振器特性は、複数の上記グレーティング(後述する)の間の光学的損失を低下させることによっても最適化させることができる。
光学的共振が生じると、透過した上記出力光線34(共振器システムとして、上記共振キャビティ26及びグレーティング20,30から構成される)は、知られているように共振周波数(波長)においてピークを形成し、この場合、上記出力光線22は、上記出力光線22,34に対して相補的に最小値を形成する。逆に、上記出力光線22が共振周波数(波長)においてピークを与えるように光学的に共振する場合には、上記出力光線34が最小になることが知られている。上記共振器の狭い波長バンド幅のため、上記グレーティング20,30の間の上記光路長が僅かでも変化すると、共振波長において上記出力光線34の強度は著しい減少を示す。従って、まず上記共振器は、上記ファイバ26に上記コーティング40を施さない状態で共振するように設計される。その後、上記コーティング40が施され、上記コーティング40により全体として平均的な圧力が加えられて、上述したように上記ファイバ26の平均屈折率が変化する。この結果、上記光路長は、共振に必要とされる光路長から変化し、共振波長における上記出力強度は、著しく減少する(すなわち、共振器が共振しなくなるためである)。
浸食が発生すると、上記コーティング40によって加えられた圧力は減少し、上記光路長は、以前の未コート状態へと戻ることとなる。この結果、上記光学的共振が発生するようになり(すなわち、上記キャビティが再度共振状態となる)、上記共振周波数における出力光強度は増大し、上記検出器35,38からの出力信号は増加する。
上記コーティングが一部だけが消滅した場合、すなわち、上記コーティングが薄くなったり、又は一部の領域だけで消滅したが、それ以外の領域では残されている場合には、それぞれに対応する上記共振器は、未コートキャビティへと向かって変化する。上記グレーティング反射率プロファイルの変化が観測されるまでのコーティングの必要消滅量は、上記コーティングによって加えられている初期の力や、コーティング材料の剛性や、残されている上記コーティングの厚さに依存するが、当業者によれば容易に決定することができる。
これとは別に、上記共振器を、コーティング40がなされている条件で共振するように設計しておいても良く、その後、浸食されると圧力が減少して上記キャビティの光路長が変化し、上記システムは共振しなくなり、上記共振波長における出力光線が著しく減少するようにされていてもよい。
また、上記コーティング40によって加えられている径方向の圧力46が変化すると、上記ファイバの領域26は、ポアッソン比に応じてその物理的長さLを変化させる。この効果は、全体の光路長変化に寄与している。しかしながら、この効果は、上述したそれ以外の影響に比べて著しく小さなものである。
加えて、上記クラッド44の周囲の上記コーティング40の厚さは、完全に均一というわけではなく、長手(長さ)方向軸に沿って上記コーティング40の厚さも、完全に均一というわけではない。このため、上記コートファイバには、上記圧46がランダムに変化しつつ加えられ(即ち、マイクロベンド(microbends))、これによって、上記キャビティ26の屈折率には、不均一なランダム変動が生じる。この結果、上記キャビティ26内の上記光線24,32は、上記コーティング40が存在する場合には、上記各グレーティング20,30の間において伝搬損失、すなわち伝搬の効率低下を来たし、上記共振器のQ値(即ちフィネス)を変化させることとなる。従って、上記共振器キャビティの光学的損失は、上記キャビティの回りにコーティングが存在すると最も大きくなる。この結果、上記共振器が、未コート状態において共振するように設計されている場合が、上記共振器の損失を最も低くする設計とされる。
上述したように、上記キャビティが共振しているか否かは、上記光路長(屈折率)に関連するものであり、この光路長は、上記ファイバキャビティ上の上記コーティングによって加えられる全体の平均した力に関連している。また、上述したように、光学的な伝搬損失(即ち効率低下)は、上述したマイクロベンド(即ち、上記キャビティに加えられる不均一な力)によって引き起こされている。このことから、我々は、上記キャビティをコーティングするプロセスと、用いるコーティング材料と、を調節して上記共振器内で生じる光学的損失量を決定することができることを見いだした。
従って、上記ファイバが、融点温度で溶解させたアルミニウムでコーティング、例えば、上記ファイバを溶融アルミニウムへと温度を約650℃以上としてディップコートし、その後上記ファイバを引き上げて冷却し、上記ファイバの表面に上記コーティングを接着させた場合には、上記ファイバとアルミニウムの間の熱膨張係数の大きな違いにより、冷却中に上記ファイバには、全体として大きな力が加えられ、上記キャビティ内に大きな平均的な屈折率変化が生じることとなる。以後この技術を、“フリーズコーティング法(freeze coating)”とする。
しかしながら、上記ファイバが実質的にコーティングプロセス中に室温に保持されている場合(例えばスパッタリング法やベーパデポジッション法等)には、上記ファイバに対する冷却温度勾配は大きくないので、上記ファイバに加えられる平均的な全体の力は上記ディッピング技術のようには大きくならない。従って、上記平均屈折率変化及びそれに伴う光路長変化は小さくなる。また、このプロセスを用る場合には、上記コーティングは、極めて平滑で均一になりがちである。従って、光学的損失の変化は、上述したディッピング技術よりも小さくなる。
従って、我々は、鋭意検討の結果、上記キャビティに加えられる全体の平均的力の量を調節させることによって、屈折率変化量(及びそれに伴う光路長の変化)を自在に変化させることができることを見出したものである。この量は、コーティング中のファイバ温度、上記コーティング材料の熱膨張係数に直接に関連している。また、我々は、上記キャビティに塗布する際のコーティングの平滑性及び均一性を調節することにより、上記キャビティに沿った光学的損失を調節することができることを見出したものである。
本発明は、コーティングの消滅に対して著しく鋭敏な検出方法を提供することができる。特に、光学的共振器に関連するセンサ、例えばファイバファブリ−ペロー型干渉計によれば、数マイクロラジアン(1°の数分の一程度)程度に小さな攪乱により発生した位相変化を検出することができる。この様にして、約10-5ラジアン程度の位相変化(Δφ/φ)を検出することも可能である。光ファイバに沿った上記位相変化(これは、上記光路長変化に直接的に関連する)は、次式で算出できる。

上式中、ΔLは、物理的な光路長Lの上記攪乱誘起変化であり、Δnは、上記平均有効コア屈折率nの変化である。この位相シフトは、上記光ファイバに加えられる攪乱誘起の長軸方向歪みεz及び径方向歪みεrという主要成分項を用いて以下のように変形できる。

上述したように、アルミニウムといった材料で光ファイバを上記フリーズコーティングするプロセスは、径方向にわたって圧力を及び長さ方向の応力を加え、これらは、径方向及び長さ方向歪み成分を発生させる。上記コーティング誘起歪み成分は、約10-3ラジアン程度の著しい位相シフトを発生させる。従って、本発明では、上述した光共振器を用いれば、上記アルミニウムコーティング特性においては、極めて小さな(例えば1%未満)の浸食誘起変化を検出することも可能である。
純粋なファブリ−ペロー型キャビティ26を用いるかわりに、上記ファイバ領域26には、所定量のドーパントでドープをしておき、ファイバレーザを形成させても良い。上記ファイバレーザは、米国特許第5,305,335号、名称“単一縦モードポンプ光導波路がレーザ配置”に開示されている。本発明をファイバレーザ構成において用いる場合には、上述したような共振器設計と類似の設計方式を用いることができる。特に、適切な光路長は、レーザ発振させるためには重要である。上記光路長は、上記グレーティングの上記反射波長とともに設計され、コーティングが存在しない場合にレーザ発振するようにしておく。上記キャビティ、すなわち上記キャビティの一部分は、その後コーティングされ、上記光路長が変更されて、レーザ発振は、低減するか、或いは発振しなくなる。その後、浸食が生じると、上記光路長はその未コート状態へと戻り、レーザ発振波長において強度ピークを有する出力光を発生させる。これとは別に、上記ファイバレーザは、コーティングが施された状態でレーザ発振するように設計しておくこともでき、この場合には浸食の発生により、上記出力光線は、レーザ発振波長において減少するか、或いはレーザ波長がシフトを示すことになる。
上記光源10は、広い波長幅の光源とすることもでき、上記検出器38は、光学的な分光器であって、上記反射波長プロファイルを表した電気信号39を与えるように、すなわち上記反射波長及びそれに伴なう強度を与えるようにされていても良いことが理解されよう。これとは別に、上記光源は、能動的に波長スキャン/指令する技術を用いる波長可変光源とすることもでき、これについては、同時係属中の米国特許出願番号08/129,217号、名称“ファイバグレーティングシステムセンサの診断システム”に開示してある。侵食による光出力信号の変化を検出するためには、別のいかなる構成でも用いることができる。上記光学的出力信号22又は34を分析するための別のいかなる手段(そのデバイスが、反射型か、透過型かに依存する)でも、浸食による上記光学的出力信号の変化を検出するために用いることができる。
さらに、アルミニウム以外の材料であっても上記キャビティを取り囲むコーティングとして使用することができ、これらのコーティングが、浸食、蒸発、薄膜化、等と言った別の方法により一部又は完全に消滅することで上記キャビティに加えられる力が低減するようにされていても良い。従って、本発明は、キャビティを取り囲むいかなるコーティングであっても、その一部又は全部の消滅を検出するために使用することができ、この際、全体を平均した力及び上記グレーティングに加えられる不均一な力が満たすべき所定の変化基準が与えられるようにされている。
また、上記キャビティの全長にコーティングを施すかわりにキャビティの一部をコーティングすることもできる。
Claims (11)
- 光学的センサであって、この光学的センサは、
光学的なキャビティが画成されている光ファイバと、
この光ファイバに埋設され、中心反射波長を有し、かつ、光学的な前記キャビティを画成する対となった反射型のファイバグレーティングと、
前記ファイバグレーティングの中心反射波長に応じ、光学的共振器を画成するようなキャビティ光路長及び伝搬損失と、
所定厚で周囲を取り囲み、かつ、前記キャビティの長さに沿った材料コーティングと、を有し、
前記コーティングは、前記キャビティにわたって径方向内側に向かった力を加えていて、前記キャビティの全体の屈折率を変化させ、前記キャビティの前記光路長を変化させることで共振器に共振を生じさせないようにしており、

- 前記コーティングによる前記の力は、前記キャビティを取り囲み、かつ、前記キャビティにわたって不均一に加えられ、上記キャビティの屈折率に変動を与えているとともに、前記キャビティの前記光学的効率を低下させるようになっていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 前記コーティングは、アルミニウムからなることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 前記コーティングの消滅は、前記コーティングの浸食によってなされるようになっていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載のセンサ。
- 光センサを製造する方法であって、この方法は、
光ファイバ内部に埋設され、光学的なキャビティを画成する対となった反射型のファイバグレーティングが埋設された光ファイバを形成するステップと、
前記ファイバグレーティングの中心反射波長に応じて、前記キャビティの光学的光路長及び伝搬損失を設定して光学的共振器を形成するステップと、
前記キャビティの周囲及びその長さにわたってコーティングを施すステップと、を有し、
前記コーティングは、前記キャビティに径方向内側に向かって力を加えて前記キャビティの全体の屈折率変化を生じさせ、前記キャビティの前記光路長を変化させて共振器が共振しないようにしており、
前記キャビティ上の前記コーティングは、少なくとも一部が消滅することで共振器が共振するようにされていることを特徴とする光センサの製造方法。 - 前記コーティングは、アルミニウムからなることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の方法。
- 前記コーティングを施すステップは、ベーパデポジッション法を含んでいることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の方法。
- 前記コーティングを施すステップは、フリーズコーティング法を含んでいることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の方法。
- 前記コーティング消滅は、前記コーティングの浸食からなるものであることを特徴とする請求項7の方法。
