Description
【0001】
(“A6×6−in 20−lpi Electroluminescent Display Panel ”T.P.BRODY,FANG CHEN LUO,et.al.IEEE Trans.Electron Devices,Vol.ED-22,No.9,Sept.1975、p739〜p749参照)
【0012】
Ids=(1/2)(W/L)μ0 C0 (Vgs−Vth)2
Ids TFT
Vth TFT

For this reason, the image data (video signal) VL is input to the gate of the thin film transistor which is a nonlinear element (BIAS TFT) M11. As a result, a current corresponding to the gate voltage flows from the EL power source to the drain and source of the nonlinear element M11, and the EL element EL11 emits light.

At the next timing, the

As shown by extracting one pixel in FIG. 5, an EL element for each pixel is connected in series to a nonlinear element (BIAS TFT) M for light emission control, and a signal holding signal is connected to the gate electrode of the nonlinear element (BIAS TFT) M. Capacitor C is connected.
[0010]
A non-linear element for data writing (SELECT-SW TFT) Ty is connected to the signal holding capacitor C, and Y-coordinate selection signals Yn and X are connected to the non-linear element for data writing (SELECT-SW TFT) Ty. Image data (video signal) VL selected by the coordinate selection signal is applied.
[0011]
Charge is stored in the signal holding capacitor C by the image data VL, and the current flowing through the light emission control nonlinear element (BIAS TFT) M is controlled by the voltage stored in the signal holding capacitor C. Thus, the emission intensity of the EL element is determined. (See “A6 × 6-in 20-lpi Electroluminescent Display Panel” TPBRODY, FANG CHEN LUO, et.al. IEEE Trans. Electron Devices, Vol. ED-22, No. 9, Sept. 1975, p739 to p749)
[0012]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the characteristic relationship between the current flowing through the nonlinear element (BIAS TFT) M for light emission control and the voltage stored in the capacitor C is not necessarily a linear relationship. For this reason, since the relationship between the magnitude of the input video signal and the light emission luminance of the EL element is not linear, the light emission luminance of the EL element cannot be obtained faithfully to the input video signal. It was difficult to reproduce the brightness.
[0013]
For example, when the non-linear element M is a field effect transistor (TFT), the current flowing through the non-linear element M is expressed by the following equation in the saturation region.
Ids = (1/2) (W / L) μ 0 C 0 (Vgs−Vth) 2
Current flowing in Ids TFT Vgs Gate-source voltage (voltage accumulated in capacitor C)
C 0 Gate capacitance per unit area μ 0 Mobility W TFT gate channel width L TFT gate channel length Vth TFT threshold voltage As apparent from the above equation, Ids and Vgs are not proportional. The luminance of light emitted in proportion to the video signal could not be obtained.
[0014]
An object of the present invention is to solve the above-described conventional problems, and to obtain a luminance of a thin film pixel element faithful to an input video signal by making an input voltage and a current flowing through a non-linear element for light emission control in a linear proportional relationship. To do.
[0015]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention comprises a light emitting thin film pixel element (EL element), a light emitting control nonlinear element (BIAS TFT), a selection switching TFT, and the like as shown in FIG. In addition to the

Therefore, when the image signal VL is input to the operational amplifier OP, the operational amplifier OP controls the non-linear element M1 so that the input image signal VL and the reference potential Vs are equal. Therefore, a current proportional to the image signal VL is used for reference. It flows as a current Is of the non-linear element M1.

Therefore, when the image signal VL is input to the resistor R1, a current Is proportional to it flows to the nonlinear element M1, the transistor Q1, the resistor R2, and the common potential (ground). In this manner, a current proportional to the image signal VL flows through the reference nonlinear element M1, and the same current flows through the nonlinear element for light emission control.
[0026]
For this reason, since a current proportional to the image signal VL flows through the non-linear element for light emission control on the
[0027]
Also in this embodiment, the TFT as the non-linear element on the panel side and the TFT as the non-linear element for reference M1 are simultaneously formed on the same substrate, so that the characteristics of these TFTs can be easily made substantially the same. Can be configured.
[0028]
Further, it is not necessary to provide a plurality of reference nonlinear elements M1, and one reference can be made according to the shape of the channel of the TFT, which is a nonlinear element for light emission control on the panel side.
[0029]
In the above-described embodiment, the case where a TFT manufactured using a thin film is used as the nonlinear element has been described. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and a nonlinear element manufactured by another manufacturing method can also be used.
[0030]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, the present invention has the following effects.
(1) An image signal input using a second nonlinear element having characteristics similar to those of the nonlinear element for light emission control is converted into an image signal suitable for the nonlinear element for light emission element control, and this light emission control is performed. Since it is input as the control voltage of the non-linear element, the luminance faithful to the video signal can be reproduced.
[0031]
(2) Since a device in which a non-linear element for light emission control and a second non-linear element are used at the same time is used, these characteristics can be made to have almost the same characteristics, and the luminance is faithful to the video signal. Can be provided.
[0032]
(3) Since an operational amplifier is used for the reference converter, the luminance of the thin film pixel element faithful to the input video signal can be obtained.
(4) A current mirror is used for the reference converter, and the current mirror is composed of the second nonlinear element and the nonlinear element for light emission control, so that a complicated circuit such as an operational amplifier is not required, and it is faithful to the input video signal. The brightness of a thin film pixel element can be obtained.
[0033]
(5) A second nonlinear element having a voltage-current characteristic similar to that of the nonlinear element for light emission control is provided, and an image signal adjusted with reference to an output of the second nonlinear element is used to control the light emission control. Since the nonlinear element is driven, the brightness of the thin film pixel element faithful to the input video signal can be obtained.
[0034]
(6) In the method for driving the non-linear element for light emission control, the second non-linear element is formed at the same time as the non-linear element for light emission control, so that these characteristics are almost the same. Therefore, it is possible to provide a driving method of an image display device that reproduces luminance faithful to a video signal.
