本発明は、通信ケーブルなどの製造に用いるSZ撚り装置に関し、特に押さえ巻きの改良に関するものである。

光・通信ケーブルなどの製造方法においては、ケーブルに可撓性を付与する等の目的のために、絶縁心線、光ファイバ心線、あるいはこれらを複数本集合したユニットなどのケーブル要素を撚り合わせる工程が一般的に行われる。従来、ケーブル要素を撚り合わせる方法としては、例えば図に示すようなものがある。即ち、複数のドラム1を回転ゲージ2内にセットして一方向に回転しながらケーブル要素4を供給し、撚り合わせ口金3直前で撚り合わせる。また、図示してないが、複数本の糸状物あるいはテープ状物の押さえ巻き材料を撚り合わせ口金3直前あるいは直後のいずれかで一方向に巻き付けて押さえ巻きを施す。この方法では、ドラムが大型化されると装置も大きくなり、また、ドラムの取り替えに手数がかかり、作業能率を上げられないという問題があった。

このような問題を解決した撚り合わせ方法にSZ撚り法がある。この方法では、ケーブル要素の繰り出し側も引き取り側も撚り方向に回転しない。その代わりに図に示すように、両者の中間にSZ反転装置11があり、ケーブル要素12がその中を通過する際、ケーブル要素12に一定間隔で右撚り(S撚り)・左撚り(Z撚り)の撚りを交互に与えるようになっている。その工程の手順は次の通りである。即ち、
1)図において、ケーブル要素12が右から左へ進行する。ケーブル要素12は、進行方向に移動すると同時にSZ反転装置11の回転により撚りが与えられる。SZ反転装置11の回転方向は、適宜の時間間隔で逆転する。
2)SZ撚りしたものが元に戻らないようにするために、撚り合わせ口金17直前で、第1の押さえ巻き装置13により一定方向の第1の押さえ巻きを施す。次いで、第2の押さえ巻き装置14により第1の押さえ巻き方向と反対方向に第2の押さえ巻きを施す。15、16は押さえ巻き材料、18はSZ撚りされたSZ撚りケーブル、19および20は各々押さえ巻き装置13、14内に設けられた中空シャフトである。
