BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a piezoelectric transformer control circuit suitable for use in a cold cathode tube driving apparatus.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, liquid crystal displays have been widely used as display devices in notebook personal computers that are easy to carry. Inside this liquid crystal display device, a cold cathode tube is provided as a so-called backlight to back up the liquid crystal display panel, and lighting of the cold cathode tube starts from a DC low voltage such as a battery. There is a need for a step-up inverter capable of converting to an AC high voltage of about 500 Vrms at the time of steady lighting at 1000 Vrms. Conventionally, a winding transformer has been used as a step-up transformer of this step-up inverter, but recently, a piezoelectric transformer that performs step-up by electrical conversion through mechanical energy is being used. This piezoelectric transformer has a generally undesirable characteristic that the step-up ratio varies greatly depending on the size of the output load (load resistance). On the other hand, the dependence on the load resistance is an inverter power supply for a cold cathode tube. It is attracting attention as a compact high-voltage power supply that meets the demands for thinner and more efficient liquid crystal displays. An example of such a piezoelectric transformer control circuit will be described with reference to FIG.
[0003]
FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a conventional control circuit for a piezoelectric transformer.
[0004]
In the figure, 101 is a piezoelectric transformer, 102 is a load such as a cold cathode tube connected to the output side of the

FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of frequency characteristics regarding the output voltage and load current of the piezoelectric transformer.
[0006]
The
[0007]
Therefore, according to the control circuit of FIG. 1, frequency control is performed so that the load current detection voltage Vri becomes the reference voltage Vref, and the load current is held at a predetermined value by the frequency control. In such a piezoelectric transformer control circuit, if the load is a cold cathode tube and it is used as a lighting device for the cold cathode tube, the brightness of the cold cathode tube is proportional to the tube current flowing therethrough, so it is important that the predetermined brightness can be maintained. Function can be achieved. However, in the cold-cathode tube lighting device, in addition to the function of maintaining a predetermined luminance, a function of changing the luminance (dimming function) is required. As one of the methods, for example, in the prior Japanese Patent Application No. 8-228458 by the applicant of the present application, an average pulse current of the cold cathode tube is obtained by driving the piezoelectric transformer by applying an intermittent pulse voltage. A method of adjustment is proposed. Here, the outline of the method will be described with reference to FIGS.
[0008]
FIG. 3 is a block diagram of a conventional piezoelectric transformer control circuit capable of adjusting the brightness of a cold cathode fluorescent lamp.
[0009]
FIG. 4 is a diagram for explaining the operation of a piezoelectric transformer control circuit capable of adjusting the luminance of a cold cathode tube as a conventional example.
In the figure, the horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents the pulse voltage supplied from the pulse
[0010]
When the luminance is reduced, a pulse voltage having a certain pulse interval is supplied from the pulse
[0011]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, even if the method of FIG. 3 is incorporated into the control circuit of the piezoelectric transformer shown in FIG. 1 to add a dimming function, the dimming function cannot be obtained. This is because, if the average tube current is decreased by intermittent oscillation for dimming, the load current detection voltage Vri becomes smaller than the reference voltage Vref, so that the oscillation frequency of the voltage controlled
[0012]
As another conventional example, FIG. 5 is a block diagram of a circuit having a function of keeping the driving voltage of the piezoelectric transformer substantially constant, and FIG. 6 has a function of keeping the output voltage of the piezoelectric transformer substantially constant. FIG. These circuits compare the voltage detected by the
[0013]
Furthermore, as another conventional example, in FIG. 7, the tube current is controlled by adjusting the duty ratio of the rectangular wave signal output from the
[0014]
However, even when the circuit for performing intermittent oscillation of FIG. 3 is incorporated in these circuits, the functions of each other are canceled as in the case of incorporation in FIG. 1, and preferable control cannot be obtained.
[0015]
Therefore, the present invention has an object to provide a control circuit for a piezoelectric transformer capable of achieving both a function of maintaining the tube current, drive voltage, or output voltage of a cold cathode tube as a load substantially constant and a brightness adjusting function by intermittent oscillation. To do.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the piezoelectric transformer control circuit of the present invention is characterized by the following configuration.
