Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to communication, and more particularly, to a wireless system.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Many wireless data networks today transmit data between base stations and mobiles in a series of fixed length physical layer blocks (simply referred to as “blocks”). Each block consists of a number of payload bits and parity bits. They are generated by a forward error correction code (coding) scheme. In general, increasing the number of parity bits per block can increase the number of airing errors that can be detected and corrected.
[0003]
However, increasing the number of parity bits per block clearly reduces the number of available payload bits. Thus, wireless data networks such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks use multiple coding schemes to transmit data over the air link. The higher the received signal to sound ratio (SNR), the lower the air link bit error rate. As a result, coding schemes with a small number of parity bits often provide adequate protection. Low SNR requires “strong” coding to protect data against air link errors. Strong coding adds more parity bits to each block.
[0004]
The error performance of the cellular air link changes as the mobile moves through the cell. In order to use the air link most effectively, the coding scheme is dynamically selected according to the change in the quality of the cellular air link. The current coding scheme selection algorithm is a function of the channel quality indicator (CQM). CQM is a function of, for example, soft bit or soft symbol information, block or bit error rate estimation, received signal strength, and / or carrier to interference ratio (C / I).
[0005]
For example, for a C / I in a given coding scheme, the portion of the transmission that causes a block error decreases as the C / I value of the received signal increases. Using simulation or analysis techniques, it is possible to evaluate the rate at which payload bits were carried over the air link as a function of C / I. Plotting the throughput versus C / I curve for all coding schemes available in a wireless data network shows advantageous C / I values for switching coding schemes.
[0006]
FIG. 1 shows a plot of throughput C / I for three coding schemes I, II, and III. Coding scheme I is the strongest and coding scheme III is the weakest. C / I switching points are often hard-coded at the transmitter. Based on the C / I measurement, the transmitter switches to the coding scheme that gives the best performance (highest throughput / lowest delay) at the estimated received C / I level.
[0007]
Similar selection techniques are used in other systems such as Enhanced GPRS and North American TDMA packet data channels. For example, instead of or in addition to the channel coding rate, there is one that changes the modulation scheme (signal constellation size) in order to realize a similar trade-off for changing C / I. Therefore, in the North American TDMA packet data channel, the channel coding rate is fixed (to 5/6) and the modulation scheme is switched between 4 levels (DQPSK) and 8 levels (coherent 8PSK) (16 levels (still defined). Can be extended to not)).
[0008]
In this case, if the three formats I, II and III are considered as three modulation schemes, the same performance trade-off as shown in FIG. 1 is applied. (In this specification, “coding / modulation scheme” means any of the coding scheme, modulation scheme, coding and modulation scheme used to transmit a signal.)
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
We have observed that selecting a coding / modulation scheme based only on CQM (eg C / I) does not advantageously use any available bandwidth in the block. Thus, the data direction is not maximized for a particular block. For example, payload bits are always sent as a block number. A transmitter that wishes to be sent a 1-byte payload must send one block regardless of which coding / modulator scheme is used. However, if the coding / modulation scheme selection is based solely on CQM, the coding / modulation scheme with the least number of parity bits is used regardless of the availability of available bandwidth in the block. As a result, when the coding with the smallest number of parity bits is used, the level of data protection becomes low and the air link cannot be used effectively.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The coding / modulation selection scheme according to the present invention takes into account CQM measurements and the amount of payload bits sent in the block. As a result, the strongest coding / modulation scheme can be used for a given amount of payload bits.
[0011]
In one embodiment, the transmitter uses one of the k coding / modulation schemes when transmitting data over the wireless data network. The transmitter first selects coding / modulation scheme C as a function of C / I measurement. Subsequently, the transmitter calculates the number B of blocks necessary for transmitting the data packet group D using the coding / modulation scheme C. In addition, the transmitter calculates the number of blocks required to transmit the data packet group D for each coding / modulation scheme stronger than the selected coding / modulation scheme C.
[0012]
Finally, the transmitter selects a coding / modulation scheme for transmitting the data packet group D in the B block using the strongest coding / modulation scheme. As a result, each block is transmitted using the strongest coding / modulation scheme available. Accordingly, the number of retransmissions is reduced, the packet transmission delay is reduced and the fluctuation is reduced, and the maximum throughput can be realized.

When coding / modulation scheme C is selected,
[0018]
In a GPRS network, for all four coding / modulation schemes used in GPRS, a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) acknowledgment packet (after native TCP / IP header compression is applied by GPRS) We recognized that it could fit in one physical layer block. TCP acknowledge packets often make up the majority of data packets carried over the GPRS network. In fact, the majority of Internet packets will fit into one or two GPRS air link blocks. For example, Internet backbone measurements indicate that approximately half the length of a packet is 64 bytes or less. Therefore, when the principle of the present invention is used in a GPRS network, the efficiency can be improved and the retransmission rate can be lowered for the TCP / IP traffic portion.
[0019]
Although the principles of the present invention have been illustrated herein by discrete functional blocks (eg, transmit buffer 115), any of the functions of these blocks may be performed by one or more appropriately programmed processors or processing circuits (eg, , Digital signal processor, discrete circuit element, IC). Although the principles of the present invention have been described in relation to C / I, any CQM can be used.
