Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an ignition device for an internal combustion engine, and more particularly, to a technique capable of obtaining an ignition characteristic according to the operating state of the engine.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In order to make the secondary voltage rise quickly as a characteristic of the ignition coil in the ignition device of the internal combustion engine, the discharge time is short because the number of secondary windings of the ignition coil is reduced to release the energy in a short time. On the other hand, in order to obtain a characteristic with a long discharge time, the rise of the secondary voltage is slowed because energy is released for a long time by increasing the number of secondary windings of the ignition coil. There is a conflict.
[0003]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Conventionally, when operating at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or an air-fuel ratio richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, an ignition coil having a characteristic that the secondary voltage rises quickly so as to obtain good ignition performance against smoldering of the spark plug can be provided. Although sufficient, when operating at an air-fuel ratio that is sufficiently leaner than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, characteristics that require a long discharge time are required to maintain a stable combustion state.
[0004]
However, even an engine that operates at a lean air-fuel ratio needs to operate at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or a rich air-fuel ratio at the time of start-up or at a high load. A characteristic in which the secondary voltage rises quickly is required. In addition, when stratified combustion is performed by forming a stratified mixture in the combustion chamber as in an engine developed in recent years, a good ignition performance against smoldering is obtained for a rich mixture around the spark plug. In order to obtain the above, a characteristic in which the secondary voltage rises quickly is required, and at the same time, the outer lean mixture is required to have a long discharge time so that a stable combustion state can be maintained. In stratified combustion, there is a large variation in the air-fuel ratio in terms of space and time (combustion cycle), so there is also a need for double ignition for the purpose of avoiding misfire.
[0005]
If the ignition energy of the ignition coil is set to be large, it is possible to increase the rising secondary voltage while extending the discharge time. However, if the operation is always performed with the ignition energy increased, the power consumption increases. The electrode of the spark plug may be consumed or the amount of heat generated by the power transistor may increase, thereby impairing durability.
[0006]
The present invention has been made paying attention to such a conventional problem, and an object of the present invention is to provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine that can obtain ignition characteristics in accordance with the operating state of the engine while suppressing power consumption. And
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
For this reason, as shown in FIG.
A first ignition coil having a relatively fast secondary voltage rise and a short discharge time;
A second ignition coil having a characteristic that the rise of the secondary voltage is relatively slow and the discharge time is long;
The first ignition coil and the second ignition coil are driven independently according to the engine operating state . During the stratified combustion operation, the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil are driven, and the drive start timing of the first ignition coil is set to the first timing. Ignition control means for driving together earlier than two ignition coils ;
It is characterized by comprising.
According to the invention of
The ignition control means selects and drives either one or both of the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil according to the engine operating state.
[0009]
As a result, the first ignition coil is driven during operation that requires a fast rise of the secondary voltage, and the second ignition coil is driven during operation that requires a long discharge time. At the time of operation requiring a fast and long discharge time, the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil are driven at the same time, so that ignition control can be performed with characteristics suitable for each operation condition. In addition, power consumption can be suppressed to the minimum necessary, and deterioration of durability can be prevented.

Further, during the stratified combustion operation, the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil are driven together with the drive start timing of the first ignition coil earlier than that of the second ignition coil.
In other words, by driving the first ignition coil with a fast secondary voltage rise first, it is possible to obtain good ignition performance against smoldering due to a rich mixture around the spark plug in stratified combustion, Next, by driving the second ignition coil having a long discharge time, a stable combustion state can be maintained for the outer lean air-fuel mixture. Further, by performing double ignition by simultaneously driving the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil, it is possible to avoid the occurrence of misfire due to spatial and temporal (combustion cycle) variations in the air-fuel ratio in stratified combustion. be able to.
Further, the invention according to
[0011]
According to the invention of
During start-up or operation at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or an air-fuel ratio richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, the ignition control means selects and drives only the first ignition coil. Since smoldering is likely to occur due to the above, by driving the first ignition coil having a characteristic that the secondary voltage rises quickly, ignition failure due to smoldering can be prevented and good ignition performance can be ensured.
[0012]
The invention according to
The ignition control means drives only the second ignition coil during a homogeneous lean combustion operation or during an operation in which EGR is performed at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio greater than or equal to a predetermined EGR rate.
[0013]
According to the invention of
During homogeneous lean combustion operation or during operation in which EGR is performed at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio above a predetermined EGR rate, the ignition control means selects and drives only the second ignition coil.
[0014]
That is, at the time of homogeneous lean combustion, as shown in FIG. 2, by extending the discharge time, the combustibility is stabilized and the lean limit is expanded, so that the ignition is performed by the second ignition coil having the characteristic that the discharge time is long. By doing so, the lean limit is expanded while stabilizing the flammability to promote the reduction of HC, CO, etc. and the improvement of the fuel consumption, and also when performing a large amount of EGR, as shown in FIG. By extending the discharge time, the combustibility is stabilized and the EGR limit is expanded, so by igniting with the second ignition coil having a long discharge time characteristic, the EGR limit is expanded while stabilizing the combustibility. To promote NOx reduction and fuel efficiency improvement.
[0018]
The invention according to
[0019]
According to the fourth aspect of the present invention, when a misfire is detected at times other than during the stratified combustion operation, the ignition control means selects and drives both the first ignition coil and the second ignition coil .
[0020]
In other words, there are two possible misfires in combustion other than stratified combustion: misfire due to smoldering and misfire due to excessively lean air-fuel ratio. Therefore, the rise of the secondary voltage effective for smoldering is assumed. Of the first ignition coil that is fast and the second ignition coil that has a long discharge time that is effective against misfire due to excessive lean simultaneously to perform double ignition, thereby reliably preventing both misfires. And
[0021]
The invention according to
According to the fifth aspect of the invention, misfire in stratified combustion is caused by excessive smoldering due to the rich air-fuel mixture around the spark plug. Then, the first ignition coil having a fast secondary voltage effective against smoldering is driven to prevent misfire.
[0022]
The invention according to
The ignition control means drives only the first ignition coil when a knocking occurrence state of a predetermined level or higher is detected.
[0023]
According to the invention of
When a knocking occurrence state of a predetermined level or higher is detected, the ignition control means selects and drives only the first ignition coil.
[0024]
That is, when knocking occurs, the tip of the spark plug, which is at a high temperature, is a hot surface ignition source that is triggered by the continuous occurrence of knocking and causes preignition, so that ignition is performed by the second ignition coil with a short discharge time. As a result, the temperature at the tip of the spark plug is lowered to avoid preignition.
