【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は印字装置に関し、特に、インク漏れが発生した場合に、印字ヘッドユニット側への電源供給を遮断する機能を備えた印字装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
従来から、インクジェット式の印字装置においては、インクが充填されたインクカートリッジが印字ヘッドに取り付けられ、このインクカートリッジから印字ヘッドにインクが供給される。そして、印字ヘッドに設けられた複数のノズルから記録媒体に対してインク液滴が噴射されることにより印字が行われる。印字機構部においては、印字ヘッドユニット側に、ドライバ回路が搭載されたドライバIC基板(ドライバ・インテグレイティッド・サーキット基板)、キャリッジ側に、印字装置本体の制御部及び電源と接続されたフレキシブル基板が、互いに対向する位置に設けられている。各基板の互いに対向する面には、それぞれ印字制御信号送信用の電極及びドライバ回路駆動電源用の電極が設けられ、これら各基板上の電極同士が電気接続することで、印字装置本体から印字ヘッドユニットへ印字制御信号及びドライバ回路駆動電源が伝達される。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、上記のような従来の印字装置によれば、インクカートリッジから印字ヘッドにインクが供給される過程でインク漏れが発生した場合、図9に示すように、インクiがフレキシブル基板(又はドライバIC基板)25上のドライバ駆動電源用電極24aに達して該電極間でショートすると、この電極間には高圧が印加されているために発煙することがあった。

本発明は、上述した問題点を解決するためになされたものであり、インクカートリッジから印字ヘッドへのインク供給時のインク漏れを検出し、高圧電極間におけるショート及び発煙を未然に防止可能な印字装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するために請求項1に記載の発明に係る印字装置は、インクを噴射して記録媒体上に印字を行う印字ヘッドユニットが、印字動作のために往復動されるキャリッジ上に搭載され、この印字ヘッドユニットに設けられた基板上に、複数の信号送信用電極及び電源用電極が設けられ、その印字ヘッドユニット側の基板に対向する位置の前記キャリッジに設けられた基板上に、前記信号送信用電極及び電源用電極のそれぞれに対向して信号送信用接点及び電源供給用接点が設けられ、前記両基板上の対向する電極と接点が電気接続されることにより、装置本体側の制御手段及び電源回路から印字ヘッドユニット側に印字ヘッド駆動用信号及び電源を供給するように構成された印字装置において、前記キャリッジ側の基板上の一側位置に、通常時にオープン状態にあるインク漏れ検出用の一対の電極を設けると共に、前記電源用電極を前記検出用の電極との間に前記複数の信号送信用電極を挟んで前記検出用の電極から離れた位置に設け、さらに前記検出用の電極間の抵抗値を検出する検出手段を設け、前記検出手段によりインク漏れ検出用の電極間の抵抗値が所定値よりも小さくなったことが検出された時、前記制御手段は前記印字ヘッドユニット側への電源供給を遮断するものである。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の実施の一形態に係る手動型印字装置について図面を参照して説明する。図1は本発明の実施の一形態であるプリンタ1の内部機構を示した斜視図であり、印字機構、紙送り機構、及びパージ装置等が示されている。印字機構2は、インクジェット式の印字ヘッド5を備える印字ヘッドユニット(以下、ヘッドユニットという)6と、印字ヘッド5にインクを供給するインクカートリッジ7等からなり、ヘッドユニット6とインクカートリッジ7は、キャリッジ8に搭載されている。ここで、キャリッジ8は、ベルト9を介してキャリッジモータ10により駆動されており、キャリッジ軸11に沿って水平移動するようになっている。なお、印字ヘッド5は複数個のノズルを有しており、キャリッジ8の移動に対応してノズルからインクを噴射する。印字ヘッド5への印字データ、印字クロック等の各種制御信号の送信、及び印字ヘッド5を制御するヘッドドライバ(後述)を駆動するための電源供給は、フレキシブルケーブル18によって行われる。

次に、プリンタ1の制御系の構成について図5を用いて説明する。図5はプリンタ1の制御系のブロック図である。プリンタ1には、印字データ処理等の印字動作の制御を行うG/A(ゲート・アレイ)回路31、及びその他のプリンタ1全体の制御を行うCPU(制御手段)32が備えられている。G/A回路31には、インターフェイス部33を介してホストコンピュータ34が接続され、ホストコンピュータ34から受信した印字データを格納するイメージメモリ35も接続されている。また、キャリッジ8の駆動機構、記録媒体Pの搬送機構等を制御するプログラムを格納するROM36、各機能ブロック毎の制御データを格納するRAM37が、G/A回路31及びCPU32に接続されている。CPU32には、操作スイッチ等で構成される操作パネル(SWパネル)38、並びにキャリッジ8駆動用のモータ10及び記録媒体P搬送用のモータ等からなる駆動系39が接続されている。G/A回路31にはヘッドドライバ40が接続されており、G/A回路31からヘッドドライバ40には、印字データ、転送クロック、印字クロック、及びラッチ信号といった印字制御信号が送信される。

【発明の効果】
以上のように請求項1に記載の発明に係る印字装置によれば、インクがインク漏れ検出用電極間に達して該電極間が導通し、電極間の抵抗値が小さくなった時に、これを検出して印字ヘッドユニット側への電源供給を中止するようにしているので、インク漏れを検出でき、印字ヘッドユニットへの電源供給用の高圧電極間でのショート、発煙等を生じることを防止することが可能となる。
