【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は平面状に発光する平板型光源に係り、より詳細には液晶パネル等のバックライトが必要な表示素子を使用する、例えばテレビ、ゲーム機やカーナビゲーションシステム等の情報映像機器やワープロ等のOA機器、若しくは光源を内蔵した表示システム等に用いて好適な平板型光源に関する。

【従来の技術】
液晶パネルは薄型軽量で低消費電力のため、パソコンやテレビ等各種の情報映像ディスプレイとして広く利用されている。しかし、液晶自体は発光素子ではなく、表示のためには液晶パネルの背面から光を供給するバックライトが必要である。通常用いられているバックライトは、細径の蛍光ランプとアクリル樹脂の導光体を組み合わせたものが主であるが、平板型の放電ランプも使用されている。

図7は、例えば特開平9−115483号に記載されている従来の平板型光源の断面図である。図に示す様に、ソーダガラス等からなる透光性の前面板2と、ソーダガラスやセラミック等からなる絶縁基板14と側板15とが、例えば低融点ガラス(図示せず)で一体に気密封着され、扁平状の気密容器1が構成されている。発光面となる前面板2の内面には互いに平行な一対の放電電極4、5が設けられており、上記放電電極4、5の表面は誘電体層7で覆われている。

また、絶縁基板14の内面には蛍光体8が塗布されており、気密容器1内の放電空間9には水銀と始動用ガスとしてアルゴンやネオン・アルゴン等の混合ガス、またはキセノン、クリプトン、ヘリウム、ネオン等の希ガスからなる放電ガスが封入されている。

本構成による平板型光源は、放電電極4、5間に高周波電圧を印加することにより放電空間9内に放電を発生させ、この放電で発生した紫外線により蛍光体8を励起して発光させる。蛍光体から発光した光は前面板2を通して外部に放射される。16は光の放射方向を示す。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
液晶表示装置に平板型光源をバックライトとして使用する機器は、デジタルスチルカメラやカーナビゲーションシステムなど、広い分野で使用されている。これらの機器は使用していない時は、長期間に渡ってケースなどで覆い、暗黒状態で保管されたり、低温から高温までの広い温度範囲で使用されることが多い。このため、使用時に点灯遅れを起こしたり、低温時の始動性が悪いなどの問題があった。

本発明の目的は上述した課題を解決するためになされたもので、簡単な構造で暗黒放置後の点灯遅れや低温時の始動性を改良した平板型光源を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するために、本発明においては発光面となる透光性を有する前面板と浅皿形容器からなる背面板とを組み合わせて扁平状の気密容器を構成し、上記前面板の内面に互いに放電主電極となる平行な一対の放電電極を設け、さらに放電電極の一方に近接して補助電極を設け、上記放電電極と補助電極の表面を誘電体層で覆い、前記背面板枠部と前面板の間に補助電極を形成する。

また、前記補助電極部の背面板枠部の内側に放電空間を設け、さらに放電主電極と補助電極の表面を覆った誘電体層の表面に保護膜を形成する。前記背面板および前面板には膜厚の異なる蛍光体を塗布し、上記気密容器の内部に放電ガスを封入した平板型光源とする。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下本発明の実施例を図面と共に説明する。図1、図2は本発明による平板型光源の一実施例を示す図で、図1は部分断面の斜視図を示し、図2は図1のA−A’部の断面図を示す。

図に示すように、例えばソーダガラス等からなる透光性の前面板2とソーダガラスやセラミックス等からなる浅皿形の背面板3が、例えば低融点ガラス(図示せず)で一体に気密封着され、扁平状の気密容器1を構成している。前面板2の内側には、略平行な一対の放電電極4,5が設けてあり、放電電極5に近接して補助電極6を設け、上記放電電極4,5および補助電極6の表面は厚膜印刷法等によって設けられた誘電体層7で覆われている。補助電極6は誘電体層7を介して、一部が放電空間9に露出する構造とした。

前面板2の内面および背面板3の内面にはそれぞれ膜厚の異なる蛍光体8が塗布されており、気密容器1内の放電空間9にはアルゴンやキセノンなどの希ガスまたは、キセノンを含む混合ガスが封入されている。

図3は前面板2と背面板3の枠部に補助電極6を埋め込んだ構造の断面図を示す。図4は背面板3の枠部に設けた補助電極6の近傍に放電空間10を設けた構造の平板型光源の断面図を示す。図5は放電電極4,5と補助電極6の表面を誘電体層7で覆い、誘電体層7の表面に酸化マグネシウム、酸化アルミニウムなどの保護膜11を形成した実施例を示す。

本実施例による平板型光源の駆動方法は、図6(a)に示したように、例えば電極4には12で示した−Vhの電圧を持つ矩形波電圧V1を、電極5には図6(b)のように、上記電圧12から半周期位相のずれた13の矩形波電圧V2を印加する。このような駆動方法を用いることで放電空間9内に放電が発生し、放電で発生した紫外線によって蛍光体8が励起されて発光し、光が前面板2を通して外部に放射される。

また、補助電極6には放電電極4と高抵抗またはコンデンサ(図示せず)を介して同電位に保つよう接続してあり、放電電極4,5に矩形波電圧を印加した初期に放電電極5と補助電極6の間で微放電が発生する。放電電極4,5間で正常な放電が行われると、放電電極5と補助電極6間の微放電は停止するよう構成した。

上記実施例の平板型光源を用い、液晶パネル等のバックライトが必要な各種の表示素子を構成すれば、例えばテレビ、ゲーム機、カーナビゲーションシステム等の情報映像機器やワープロ、パソコン等の表示機器において幅広く利用することができる。

【発明の効果】
本発明の平板型光源によれば、上述のように本発明の前面板に設けた互いに平行な一対の放電電極と放電電極の一方に近接して補助電極を設け、補助電極が近接しないもう一方の放電電極と補助電極を高抵抗を介して同電位にすることで、電圧印加初期に電極間が近い補助電極と近接した放電電極との間で微放電が発生する。上記構成により、暗黒放置など放電がし難い状態でも容易に放電させることができる。また、放電電極と補助電極の表面を覆って誘電体層を設け、さらに誘電体層表面に酸化マグネシウム、酸化アルミニウムなどの保護膜を形成することによって、初期電子の放出が多く、点灯性が向上することから、始動電圧を低くできる効果もある。
