【0058】
Va=(CbCcCs/C)V …(1)
Vb=(CaCcCs/C)V …(2)
Vc=(CaCbCs/C)V …(3)
C=CaCbCc+CaCbCs+CaCcCs+CbCcCs …(4)
である。
【0059】

[0015]
This inventionThe image writing method ofThe invention described aboveIn the method of writing an image on the display storage medium, an external image writing device comprises at least a selection period and a subsequent no-field display period on the display layer, and the electric field intensity Es in the selection period is A write signal having an electric field strength that changes all the cholesteric liquid crystals to the same state is applied.
[0017]

[0019]
[Action]
Cholesteric liquid crystal molecules with a helical structure of liquid crystal molecules split light incident parallel to the helical axis into right and left circularly polarized light, Bragg-reflect the circularly polarized light component that matches the twisted direction of the spiral, and transmit the remaining light Cause selective reflection phenomenon. The central wavelength λ of the reflected light and the reflection wavelength width Δλ are λ = n · p and Δλ = when the helical pitch is p, the average refractive index in a plane orthogonal to the helical axis is n, and the birefringence is Δn, respectively. The light reflected by the cholesteric liquid crystal is expressed by Δn · p and exhibits a bright color depending on the helical pitch.
[0020]
As shown in FIG. 17A, a cholesteric liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy is a planar that has the above-described selective reflection phenomenon with respect to incident light, with the helical axis perpendicular to the cell surface. B), a focal conic structure in which the spiral axis is substantially parallel to the cell surface and transmits incident light while being slightly scattered forward, and a spiral structure is unwound as shown in FIG. Shows three states: homeotropic that faces the electric field direction and transmits the incident light almost completely.
[0021]
Of the above three states, the planar and focal conic structures can exist bistable without an electric field. Therefore, the state of the cholesteric liquid crystal is not uniquely determined with respect to the electric field strength applied to the liquid crystal, and when the planar is in the initial state, the planar, focal conic structure, and homeotropic characteristics increase as the electric field strength increases. When the focal conic structure is in the initial state, the focal conic structure and the homeotropic structure change in this order as the electric field strength increases.
[0022]
On the other hand, when the electric field strength applied to the liquid crystal is suddenly reduced to zero, the planar structure and the focal conic structure are maintained as they are, and the homeotropic state is changed to the planar state.
[0023]
Therefore, the cholesteric liquid crystal immediately after the pulse signal is applied exhibits a switching behavior as shown in FIG. 18, and when the applied pulse signal has an electric field strength of Efh, 90 or more, the selective reflection changed from homeotropic to planar. When it is between Epf, 10 and Efh, 10, it becomes a transmission state by the focal conic structure, and when it is less than Epf, 90, the state before the pulse signal application is continued, that is, the selective reflection state by the planar or the focal conic. It becomes transparent by the tissue.
[0024]
In the figure, the vertical axis represents the normalized reflectance, and the reflectance is normalized with the maximum reflectance being 100 and the minimum reflectance being 0. In addition, since there is a transition region between the planar, focal conic structure, and homeotropic states, the selective reflection state is when the normalized reflectance is 90 or more, and the transmission state when the normalized reflectance is 10 or less. The threshold electric field strengths of the planar and focal conic structures change to Epf, 90, and Epf, 10 respectively before and after the transition region, and the threshold electric field strengths of the focal conic structure and homeotropic changes are expressed as follows. , Efh, 10 and Efh, 90 respectively before and after the transition region.
[0025]
In the present invention, by utilizing the bistable phenomenon of the cholesteric liquid crystal, an electric field is applied to one display layer of the display storage medium from an external image writing device, so that they are included in the one display layer. By switching between (A) the selective reflection state by the planar and (B) the transmission state by the focal conic structure for a plurality of independent cholesteric liquid crystals that selectively reflect different color lights, memory characteristics without an electric field are achieved. Monochrome display or multicolor display with
[0026]
In this case, each cholesteric liquid crystal has a relationship between a resistance value and a capacitance between each component such as each cholesteric liquid crystal and a polymer shell or a binder that holds them independently in one display layer. A determined voltage is applied. In general, since any of the constituent elements exhibits a sufficiently large resistance value, the voltage division ratio to each constituent element substantially depends on the capacitance ratio. In addition, since the cholesteric liquid crystal has anisotropy in dielectric constant, and the capacitance changes depending on the state of the planar, focal conic structure, and homeotropic, the voltage applied to each cholesteric liquid crystal is It also changes due to switching of the cholesteric liquid crystal.
[0027]
Therefore, in the display storage medium of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 18, the switching behavior of each cholesteric liquid crystal with respect to the electric field strength actually applied to the cholesteric liquid crystal and the static of each element constituting the display storage medium. By combining the voltage division ratio depending on the capacitance ratio, the state of each cholesteric liquid crystal with respect to the electric field strength applied by the external image writing device can be obtained, and by controlling this to a desired state, These cholesteric liquid crystals can be switched simultaneously and independently.
[0028]
AndIn the display storage medium of the present invention described above,A write signal composed of at least a selection period Ts of an electric field strength Es for changing all of a plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals to the same state and a subsequent non-electric field display period Td is applied to the display layer from an external image writing device. By doing so, two states are obtained: (1) a plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals are all in a planar state, and (2) a plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals are all in a focal conic state.
[0029]
Therefore, as a plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals, for example, blue color light having a peak in a wavelength range of 400 to 500 nm, green color light having a peak in a wavelength range of 500 to 600 nm, and a peak in a wavelength range of 600 to 700 nm, for example. (1) Three types of cholesteric liquid crystals that selectively reflect red color light are included in one display layer independently of each other, and a light absorption layer is provided on the side opposite to the external light incident side. All the cholesteric liquid crystals are in the selective reflection state, and white is displayed by additive color mixing. (2) All the three cholesteric liquid crystals are in the transmissive state, and the light transmitted through the three cholesteric liquid crystals enters the light absorption layer. It is possible to take the state that all is absorbed and black is displayed, and within one pixel, black, white It is possible to display two colors.
[0030]
Here, in the selective reflection phenomenon by the cholesteric liquid crystal, a maximum reflectance of 50% can be obtained in the peak wavelength range, so that a high integrated reflectance can be obtained even in white display expressed by additive color mixture, and the brightness and contrast are high. High display can be performed.
[0031]
Furthermore, each of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals can be made of cholesteric liquid crystals that selectively reflect the same color light and have mutually opposite spiral twist directions, whereby a brighter display can be obtained.
[0032]
In addition, since the display storage medium of the present invention does not require drive electrodes or drive circuits in the medium, the display storage medium can be manufactured at low cost, and can have a light and flexible structure.
[0033]
Further, as described later, a display storage medium in which a transition region between a planar state of a plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals and a state of a focal conic structure and a transition region between a focal conic structure and a homeotropic state do not exist with the same electric field strength. CaseFor example, when three cholesteric liquid crystals are included in one display layer, at least a refresh period Tr of an electric field intensity Er and a select period Ts of an electric field intensity Es from the external image writing device to the display layer, and thereafter The electric field intensity Er during the refresh period Tr and the electric field intensity Es during the selection period Ts have the relationship of Er> Es, and the threshold for the state change of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals. By applying a write signal selected from seven levels of electric field strength at the boundary, (1) all three cholesteric liquid crystals are in a planar state, and (2) all three cholesteric liquid crystals are in a focal conic structure. (3) Any one of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals is a planar, and the remaining two Is a state of the focal conic structure, (4) of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals, including a species whose threshold electric field intensity of the state change is an intermediate value between the other two types, one of which is a planar, Four states are obtained, the remaining one being the state of a focal conic organization.
[0034]
Therefore, as the three kinds of cholesteric liquid crystals, for example, blue color light having a peak in the wavelength region of 400 to 500 nm, green color light having a peak in the wavelength region of 500 to 600 nm, and a peak in the wavelength region of 600 to 700 nm, respectively. The cholesteric liquid crystal that selectively reflects the red color light that is included is included in one display layer independently of each other, and a light absorption layer is provided on the side opposite to the external light incident side, thereby (1) three types of cholesteric liquid crystal All are in the selective reflection state, and white is displayed by additive color mixing. (2) All three types of cholesteric liquid crystal are in the transmission state, and all the light transmitted through the three types of cholesteric liquid crystal is absorbed by the light absorption layer. (3) Only one of the three cholesteric liquid crystals is selected A state in which red, green, or blue is displayed in a shooting state, and (4) of three types of cholesteric liquid crystals whose threshold field change intensity is an intermediate value between the other two types In any one pixel, only two of them are in the selective reflection state, and any one of yellow, magenta and cyan can be displayed. , Black, white, red, green and blue, and two colors of yellow, magenta and cyan can be displayed in total.
[0035]
Here, in the selective reflection phenomenon by the cholesteric liquid crystal, a maximum reflectance of 50% is obtained in the peak wavelength range, so that the primary colors of blue, green, and red are displayed as well as white, yellow, Also in magenta and cyan displays, a high integrated reflectance can be obtained, and a bright and high-contrast display can be performed.
[0036]
Furthermore, each of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals can be made of cholesteric liquid crystals that selectively reflect the same color light and have mutually opposite spiral twist directions, whereby a brighter display can be obtained.
[0037]
Further, full color display can be performed by performing area gradation such as dithering or error diffusion using at least five colors of white, black, blue, green and red.
[0038]
Also in this case, since the display storage medium does not require a drive electrode or a drive circuit in the medium, the display storage medium can be manufactured at a low cost, and can have a light and flexible structure.
[0039]
As described above, according to the present invention, high-speed rewritability and non-power-source memory characteristics are achieved by electric field switching of cholesteric liquid crystals, and bright, high-contrast monochrome display or multiple display is achieved by selective reflection of cholesteric liquid crystals. A paper-like display storage medium that can perform color display, has a light and thin structure with flexibility, and has low manufacturing costs can be realized.
[0040]
Furthermore, according to the present invention, the plurality of types of cholesteric liquid crystals are not laminated as separate display layers as in the invention of the prior application, but are included in one display layer independently of each other, so that the entire display layer is The thickness can be reduced, and the writing voltage applied to the display storage medium from an external image writing device can be reduced.
[0041]

Cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, 8C are Schiff base, azo, azoxy, biphenyl, terphenyl, benzoate, tolan, pyrimidine, cyclohexanecarboxylate, phenylcyclohexane, dioxane, etc. A material obtained by adding a chiral agent having an asymmetric carbon such as an ester derivative, a cyanobiphenyl derivative, or a bisanneal derivative to a nematic liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy or a mixture thereof can be used.
[0048]
The helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal is adjusted by the amount of the chiral agent added to the nematic liquid crystal. For example, the center wavelengths of the selectively reflected lights of the cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C are 400 to 500 nm, 500 to 600 nm, and 600 to 700 nm, respectively. Try to be within range.
[0049]
Further, in order to compensate the temperature dependence of the helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal, a known method of adding a plurality of chiral agents having different twisting directions or opposite temperature dependences may be used.
[0050]
As a method of keeping the cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C in one display layer independently of each other, for example, each liquid crystal is emulsified in an aqueous phase, and then three kinds of emulsified liquid crystals are mixed and dissolved in water. A method of forming a film by adding a binder, or a method of forming a film by adding a binder after mixing three kinds of liquid crystals microencapsulated with polymer shells, respectively, can be used. By any method, a display layer in which three kinds of liquid crystals are uniformly and independently dispersed in a resin can be obtained. In addition, various methods can be used such that one type is an emulsified liquid crystal and the other two types are microencapsulated.
[0051]
Furthermore, for example, one of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals is mixed with a polymer precursor that polymerizes by heat or light, such as acrylic, thiol, or epoxy, and polymerized from a uniform phase state. PIPS (Polymerization Induced Phase Separation) method for phase separation, TIPS (Thermally Induced Phase Separation) method for mixing thermoplastic polymer and liquid crystal, cooling to a homogeneous phase, and cooling and phase separation, polymer and liquid crystal It can also be formed by a SIPS (Solvent Induced Phase Separation) method in which a polymer and a liquid crystal are phase-separated by dissolving in a solvent such as chloroform and evaporating the solvent.

The display storage medium of this example has the largest value Eth1 of the threshold electric field intensity Epf, 10 of the state change of each of the three cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C and the focal conic structure, and three kinds of The cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C are configured such that the respective focal conic structures and the smallest value Eth2 of the threshold electric field strengths Efh and 10 of the homeotropic state change have a relationship of Eth1 <Eth2. The electric field strength between Eth1 and Eth2 is the largest value Eth3 among the threshold electric field strengths Efh and 90 of the respective focal conic structures and homeotropic states of the three cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B and 8C. The above electric field strength is defined as Eb.

FIG. 6 shows the state change of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C according to the select electric field strength Es in this case, where “p” is the selective reflection state by the planar, and “f” is the focal conic. The transmissive state by the tissue is shown, and cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C are shown in this order.
[0066]
As is apparent from the above, according to the display storage medium and the image writing method described above, (1) the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, 8C are all in the planar state, and (2) the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, Two types of states are obtained: 8C is a focal conic state.
[0067]
Therefore, for example, when the cholesteric liquid crystal 8A is configured to selectively reflect blue color light, the cholesteric liquid crystal 8B is green color light, and the cholesteric liquid crystal 8C selectively reflects red color light, as shown in FIG. (T) indicates that the corresponding cholesteric liquid crystal is in a transmission state by a focal conic structure), (1) Black (Bk) is displayed by a writing signal of Es = Ea (2) The white (W) display state can be taken by the writing signal of Es = Eb, and two colors of black and white are displayed in one pixel. be able to.

In this example, the display storage medium has the same electric field strength in the transition region between the planar and focal conic states and the transition region between the focal conic and homeotropic states of the three cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C. Configured to not exist. Of the three types of cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C, the cholesteric liquid crystal having the largest threshold voltage for state change is the H liquid crystal (H layer in the figure), and the intermediate cholesteric liquid crystal is the M liquid crystal (in the figure). FIG. 10 shows the state change of the H, M, and L liquid crystals by the combination of the refresh electric field strength Er and the select electric field strength Es in this case. “P” is the selective reflection state by the planar, “f” "Represents a transmission state by a focal conic structure, and"? "Represents an undefined state depending on the state before application of the write signal, and L, M, H liquid crystals (in the figure, L, M, H layers) It shows in order.
[0073]
As is apparent from the above, according to the display storage medium and the image writing method described above, (1) all three cholesteric liquid crystals of H, M, and L are in a planar state, and (2) three kinds of H, M, and L All cholesteric liquid crystals in a focal conic structure, (3) H liquid crystal in a planar state, M liquid crystal and L liquid crystal in a focal conic state, and (4) M liquid crystal in a planar state, H liquid crystal and L liquid crystal in a focal conic structure (5) L liquid crystal is planar, H liquid crystal and M liquid crystal are in a focal conic structure, (6) H liquid crystal and M liquid crystal are planar, and L liquid crystal is in a focal conic structure, (7) M liquid crystal Seven types of states are obtained: L liquid crystal is planar and H liquid crystal is in a focal conic state.
[0074]
Therefore, for example, the cholesteric liquid crystal 8A is an H liquid crystal that selectively reflects blue color light, the cholesteric liquid crystal 8B is an M liquid crystal that selectively reflects green color light, and the cholesteric liquid crystal 8C is an L liquid crystal that selectively reflects red color light. In this case, as shown in FIG. 11 (for convenience, three types of cholesteric liquid crystal are shown in three layers, and “T” indicates that the corresponding cholesteric liquid crystal is in a transmission state by a focal conic structure) (1 ) For example, a state in which black (Bk) is displayed by a write signal of Er = Ed, Es = Ea, (2) a state in which white (W) is displayed by a write signal of Er = Eg, Es = Ea, (3) Blue (B) is displayed by a write signal of Er = Eg, Es = Ec, (4) Er = Ef, Es = a state in which green (G) is displayed by a write signal of b, (5) a state in which red (R) is displayed by a write signal of, for example, Er = Ee, Es = Ea, (6) Er = Eg, Seven display states in which cyan (C) is displayed by a write signal of Es = Eb, (7) for example, a state in which yellow (Y) is displayed by a write signal of Er = Ef, Es = Ea Thus, a total of seven colors of five colors of white, black, blue, green and red and two colors of cyan and yellow can be displayed within one pixel.
[0075]
Furthermore, full color display can be performed by performing area gradation such as dithering or error diffusion using at least five colors of white, black, blue, green and red.
[0076]
In the above example, cholesteric liquid crystal that selectively reflects green color light is used as M liquid crystal, and cyan and yellow are displayed as two of the three colors cyan, magenta, and yellow, but blue color light is selectively reflected. When the cholesteric liquid crystal to be used is M liquid crystal, cyan and magenta can be displayed as two of the three colors of cyan, magenta, and yellow, and the cholesteric liquid crystal that selectively reflects red color light is M liquid crystal. In this case, magenta and yellow can be displayed as two of the three colors cyan, magenta, and yellow.
[0077]
The embodiment shown in FIG. 1 is a case where three types of cholesteric liquid crystals 8A, 8B, and 8C selectively reflect circularly polarized components in any of the turning directions that coincide with the helical twist direction of each cholesteric liquid crystal. As in another embodiment of the

FIG. 12 shows the electric field strength of the select signal applied between the aluminum electrodes and the displayed color.
[0100]
Even when the writing of these two colors was repeated 1000 times or more, no change was observed in the display color and the electric field strength of the select signal necessary for display. In addition, each display had sufficient memory properties, and no change in display color was observed even after 30 days. Further, the display storage medium has flexibility.
