BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an atomic frequency standard that obtains a standard frequency using the frequency of an electromagnetic wave that is absorbed or emitted when the energy state of an atom transitions, and in particular, makes a microwave transition to the energy state of the atom. The present invention relates to an atomic frequency standard with an improved cavity resonator.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Since the energy transition of the cesium ( 133 Cs) atom was adopted in the definition of “second” in 1967, how accurately the time (time) is measured using the energy transition of the cesium ( 133 Cs) atom. Has been studied. In recent years, the relative accuracy has increased to the order of 10 −13 to 10 −14 . Therefore, until now, an atomic frequency standard that outputs such a high-accuracy standard frequency signal has been developed and put into practical use.
[0003]
FIG. 5 shows the transition of cesium ( 133 Cs) atoms used in this atomic frequency standard. In FIG. 5, the hyperfine level in the ground state (6 2 S 1/2 ) of the cesium ( 133 Cs) atom is denoted by F, and the hyperfine level in the excited state (6 2 P 3/2 ) is denoted by F ′. Indicated.
[0004]
The ground state (6 2 S 1/2 ) of the cesium ( 133 Cs) atom has hyperfine levels of F (level) = 4 and 3. The transition used to create the standard frequency signal is [(F = 4, m F = 0) → (F = 3, m F = 0)] or [(F = 4, m F = 0) ← ( F = 3, m F = 0)]. However, m F is the magnetic quantum number. This transition is particularly referred to as clock transition. In order to align the energy states of cesium atoms to one hyperfine level, a magnetic field is applied to the moving atoms (atomic beam), or the D 2 line (light) of cesium (Cs) atoms. Laser light having the same wavelength as the wavelength λ (= 852.1 nm) may be applied (optical pumping).
[0005]
An atomic frequency standard that uses optical pumping to align atoms into a single energy state is configured, for example, as shown in FIG.

[0034]
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and suppresses the phase fluctuation of the standing wave in the resonator and maintains the standard frequency to be output with high accuracy and with a simple configuration. An object of the present invention is to provide a high-accuracy atomic frequency standard with a simple configuration that can generate a static magnetic field (C magnetic field) that coincides with the magnetic field direction.
[0035]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present invention unifies atoms of an atomic beam emitted from an atomic beam generator into one of two energy states, and a static magnetic field parallel to a microwave magnetic field is applied to the single energy state. The state is applied to the cavity resonator having the maximum number of atoms by detecting the number of atoms that have been transitioned by performing a microwave transition in the cavity resonator in a different state to shift to another energy state. It is applied to an atomic frequency standard that outputs a microwave frequency as a standard frequency signal.
[0036]
In order to solve the above problems, the cavity resonator incorporated in the atomic frequency standard of the present invention includes a pair of H-bend ring resonators disposed along the atomic path and facing each other. A microwave introduction tube in which both end openings communicate with the ring resonator at one circumferential position on the mutually opposing surfaces of each H-bend ring resonator, and a microwave input port is formed in the center portion; Each H-bend ring resonator includes a through-hole through which atoms are formed at a position 180 ° opposite to the circumferential position where the microwave introduction tube is attached.
[0037]
In the cavity resonator incorporated in the atomic frequency standard configured as described above, a pair of H-bend ring resonators are used instead of the conventional pair of E-bend ring resonators. As described above, in the E-bend type ring resonator, the electric field direction changes in the circumferential direction in the ring type resonator, whereas in the H bend type ring resonator, the ring type resonator is used. The magnetic field direction changes in the circumferential direction.
[0038]
Therefore, in this H bend type ring resonator, the direction of the magnetic field of the microwave is a through hole formed at a position 180 ° opposite to the circumferential position where the microwave introduction tube is attached in each H bend type ring resonator. Perpendicular to the direction of the atomic beam through Therefore, the static magnetic field (C magnetic field) that needs to be applied in parallel to the direction of the microwave magnetic field may be applied in a direction orthogonal to the direction of the atomic beam, so that the conventional device using an E-bend ring resonator is used. Since it is not necessary to use a cylindrical coil, the configuration of the coil can be simplified.

[0061]
The present invention is not limited to the atomic frequency standard of the embodiment described above. In atomic frequency standard of the embodiment, as a means to align the atoms to a single energy state was irradiated with a laser beam having a D 2-wire the same wavelength of the atom to atom. That is, although the present invention is applied to an optical pumping type atomic frequency standard, it can also be applied to a magnetic deflection type atomic frequency standard that applies a magnetic field instead of a laser beam.
[0062]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, in the atomic frequency standard of the present invention, the cavity resonator for causing the atom to perform microwave transition is configured using a pair of H-bend type ring resonators.
Therefore, it is possible to generate a static magnetic field (C magnetic field) that matches the magnetic field direction of the microwave without complicating the configuration, suppress the phase fluctuation of the standing wave in the cavity resonator, and increase the output standard frequency. The accuracy can be maintained.
