TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a connection structure between an optical fiber for signal light transmission used for optical communication and the like and a waveguide device or between optical fibers.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Optical guides such as optical fibers and flat optical waveguides used for optical communication, etc., consist of a core with a high refractive index and a cladding with a low refractive index surrounding the core, and light rays are guided inside the core. Like that. In addition, various connection structures have conventionally been considered in order to optically connect the light guides to each other at the connection portions of the plurality of light guides.
[0003]
For example, in the conventional connection structure shown in FIG. 10, V-
[0004]
After the connection end faces of the waveguide device 1 and the fiber arrays 8 and 9 are optically polished, the connection end faces of the waveguide device 1 and the fiber arrays 8 and 9 are abutted to each other by using a jig for optical axis alignment. The optical axes of the fiber arrays 8 and 9 with respect to the waveguide device 1 are adjusted by measuring the intensity of the emitted light using a photodetector or the like while passing the light through the waveguide device 1. After the optical axis adjustment, the waveguide device 1 and the fiber arrays 8 and 9 are fixed to each other by an adhesive or the like.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
When the optical axis alignment of the waveguide device and the fiber array is performed as in the conventional structure described above, the alignment accuracy of the optical axis is at a level satisfactory in performance, but the work of adjusting the optical axis takes a long time. It requires careful attention and a high degree of skill, and there is a problem that the cost is high.
[0006]
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a connection structure of light guides that can accurately align the optical axes of the light guides with a relatively simple operation and can reduce the cost.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an optical waveguide having a core and a clad formed at a predetermined position, the optical waveguide comprising: first and waveguide devices having a reference surface, a plurality of mutually parallel multiple V-grooves for holding an optical fiber is formed and a second reference that is superimposed on the first reference surface at a predetermined position along the a V-groove substrate having a surface, and a protrusion protruding be formed by the core and cladding of the same material of the optical waveguide in the thickness direction of the first reference surface to the first reference plane, the second A position where the optical waveguide and the optical fiber are aligned with each other in a shape formed on the reference surface so that the protrusions can be engaged from the direction along the first reference surface and in a state in which the protrusions are engaged. Provided in And recesses, provided in the V-groove substrate and a cover plate for pressing the optical fiber to the V groove.
[0008]
In such a connection structure of the present invention, the first reference plane of the waveguide device and the second reference plane of the V-groove substrate are overlapped with each other, so that the relative position of the waveguide device and the V-groove substrate in the thickness direction is adjusted. Decided. Then, in this state, the waveguide device and the V-groove substrate are positioned in the width direction by engaging the convex portion and the concave portion from the direction along the reference surface like a wedge, and the end faces of the optical waveguide and the optical fiber are aligned. By opposing each other, both optical axes are aligned.
[0009]
The present invention according to the second aspect, as described in
[0010]
According to the present invention having such a configuration, when the convex portion and the concave portion are engaged with each other from the direction along the reference plane, the waveguide device and the V-groove substrate are positioned in the width direction, and when the convex portion is further advanced, Depending on the amount of movement, a part of the convex portion gradually climbs on the inner surface or both side edges of the concave portion, and the optical axis of the optical waveguide and the optical axis of the optical fiber are displaced in the thickness direction of the reference surface, so that the light guide is formed. The optical axis of the wave path and the optical axis of the optical fiber can be aligned.
[0011]
Since the convex portion can be formed simultaneously with the optical waveguide by using a mask used when forming the core of the optical waveguide in the manufacturing process of the waveguide device, the cost required for forming the convex portion is extremely small, The relative position between the projection and the optical waveguide can be set accurately.
[0012]

【The invention's effect】
According to the present invention, by using a waveguide device having a convex portion and a concave portion and a V-groove substrate that mesh with each other, it is possible to easily and quickly perform optical axis alignment of an optical waveguide and an optical fiber , This can contribute to cost reduction of the connection part.
[0038]
And since the above-mentioned convex part can be formed simultaneously with the optical waveguide by using the mask for the optical waveguide in the manufacturing process of the waveguide device, the cost for forming the convex part can be greatly reduced and the optical waveguide can be formed. Since the relative positional relationship between the projection and the projection can be accurately maintained, the optical axes of the projection and the projection can be more accurately aligned when the projection and the recess are engaged with each other.
[0039]
In addition, since the flat surface of the clad formed to the correct thickness in the optical waveguide film forming process can be used as the reference surface, the positional relationship between the center of the core functioning as an optical guide and the reference surface is also accurate. can do.
