TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device capable of time-division driving with a high duty and a driving method of the liquid crystal cell.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The liquid crystal display devices include a transmissive type that displays by using light from a backlight and a reflective type that displays by using external light such as natural light or indoor illumination light.
[0003]
In these liquid crystal display devices, a polarizing plate is arranged on the front side and the back side with a liquid crystal cell interposed therebetween, and in the reflection type liquid crystal display device, a reflecting plate is arranged on the back side of the back side polarizing plate. It is configured. Some reflection-type liquid crystal display devices include only one polarizing plate. In this reflection-type liquid crystal display device, a polarizing plate is disposed on the front surface side of a liquid crystal cell, and the rear surface side of the liquid crystal cell is disposed. It is configured by disposing a reflection plate.
[0004]
The liquid crystal cell used in these liquid crystal display devices has a configuration in which an electrode is provided on an inner surface and a liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates on which an alignment film subjected to an alignment process is formed. The molecules are aligned in a predetermined alignment state (for example, a twist alignment state) with the alignment direction in the vicinity of each substrate being regulated by the alignment film.
[0005]
The liquid crystal display device is driven for display by applying a drive voltage according to display data between electrodes of each pixel portion of a liquid crystal cell, and when a voltage is applied between the electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules are in a state where no voltage is applied. The alignment state is changed so as to rise from the initial alignment state with respect to the substrate surface, and light transmission is controlled according to the alignment state.
[0006]
By the way, the above liquid crystal display devices include those using a simple matrix type liquid crystal cell and those using an active matrix type liquid crystal cell. However, the structure of the liquid crystal cell is extremely simple and can be obtained at low cost. Then, the simple matrix method is advantageous.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, a liquid crystal display device using a simple matrix type liquid crystal cell controls an effective value of a driving voltage by applying a writing voltage between electrodes (between a scanning electrode and a signal electrode) of each pixel portion of the liquid crystal cell. Since the display is driven, when performing display in which the transmission state of light is controlled stepwise, if the number of time divisions increases, the difference between the effective values corresponding to each step cannot be increased, and therefore, a high duty cycle is required. If the time-division driving is attempted, the operating voltage margin (difference in the effective value of the voltage for displaying each gradation) when driving the liquid crystal cell becomes small, and clear step-by-step display becomes impossible.
[0008]
Therefore, it is difficult for a liquid crystal display device using a simple matrix type liquid crystal cell to perform high-duty time-division driving, and thus it is difficult to increase the number of pixels to achieve high definition of a display image.
[0009]
The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of enlarging an operating voltage margin with respect to a drive duty, enabling time-division driving at a high duty, and realizing display of a high-definition image having a large number of pixels. It is another object of the present invention to provide a method for driving the liquid crystal cell.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes a liquid crystal cell having a nematic liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a pair of substrates having electrodes formed on opposing surfaces, and at least one liquid crystal cell disposed on at least the surface side of the liquid crystal cell. And a driving system for supplying a voltage between the electrodes of the liquid crystal cell,
After applying a reset voltage between the electrodes of the pair of substrates, the liquid crystal layer applies a reset voltage for aligning the molecular long axis of the liquid crystal molecules substantially perpendicular to the substrate surface, selecting a first metastable state having a lower value than the reset voltage. A first metastable state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a predetermined alignment state by the selective application of a voltage and a second metastable state selection voltage different from the first metastable state selection voltage; A second metastable state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in an alignment state different from the metastable state of the liquid crystal molecules according to an effective value of a voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer in each of the first metastable state and the second metastable state. Having a writing orientation state induced by an electric field in which the orientation of the orientation changes,
The drive system includes a reset voltage and a first and second metastable state selection voltages having absolute values different from each other, wherein at least one of the absolute values having a larger absolute value has a polarity opposite to the polarity of the reset voltage. It is characterized by comprising driving means for sequentially applying a stable state selection voltage and a writing voltage for applying a voltage of a predetermined effective value to the liquid crystal layer between opposed electrodes of the liquid crystal cell.
[0011]
In this liquid crystal display device, the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell are aligned in one of the first and second metastable states, and the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules in each metastable state is changed according to the effective value of the driving voltage. The first and second metastable states are arranged so that the liquid crystal molecules rise almost vertically by application of a reset voltage to reset the previous alignment state, and then the first and second metastable states are reset. Is switched by applying a metastable state selection voltage for selecting the first or second metastable state.
[0012]
When the first metastable state is selected, the liquid crystal display device has electro-optical characteristics of a display device including a liquid crystal cell in which liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the first metastable state and a polarizing plate, and has a second metastable state. When the metastable state is selected, the display device has electro-optical characteristics of a display device including a liquid crystal cell in which liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the second metastable state and a polarizing plate.
[0013]
That is, this liquid crystal display device has the electro-optical characteristics of two display devices in which the alignment states of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell are different from each other. Can be controlled using one electro-optical characteristic, and the other plural transmission states can be controlled using the other electro-optical characteristic.
[0014]
For this reason, according to this liquid crystal display device, the total number of stages of the transmission state is determined when the one electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, when the transmission state is controlled by selecting the first metastable state. When the other electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, when the transmission state is controlled by selecting the second metastable state, the number of stages driven in each metastable state can be reduced. Therefore, in each metastable state, time-division driving with a small number of stages can be performed.
[0015]
Therefore, according to this liquid crystal display device, it is possible to increase the operating voltage margin with respect to the drive duty of the liquid crystal cell, to enable time-division driving at a high duty, and to realize the display of a high-definition image with a large number of pixels. it can.
[0016]
Further, the liquid crystal display device includes a drive system for driving the liquid crystal cell, and the drive system causes the reset voltage and the metastable state to be applied between the electrodes of the pixel portion of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell. By sequentially applying the selection voltage and applying the write voltage, the pixel portion of each pixel row is rewritten to display an image.
[0017]
In this liquid crystal display device, the rewriting is performed by first resetting the alignment state of the previous liquid crystal molecules, selecting the next metastable state, and thereafter applying a write voltage for obtaining the next write state. The resetting of the orientation state and the selection of the metastable state can be performed in a short time.
[0018]
Then, in this liquid crystal display device, of the voltage for selecting the first metastable state and the voltage for selecting the second metastable state, the metastable state selection voltage having at least the larger absolute value is set to the immediately preceding voltage. Is applied with a voltage having a polarity opposite to the polarity of the reset voltage applied to the liquid crystal cell by applying a reset voltage which is a voltage having a large absolute value that causes liquid crystal molecules to rise and orient almost vertically. The bias of the electric charge generated between the two substrates can be reduced by applying the metastable state selection voltage having the opposite polarity, and therefore, the operation characteristics of the liquid crystal cell can be kept good.
[0019]
Further, in the method of driving a liquid crystal cell according to the present invention, after supplying the reset voltage for a predetermined period, at least one of the first and second metastable state selection voltages having different absolute values has a larger absolute value. Is selectively supplied with a metastable state selection voltage having a polarity opposite to the polarity of the reset voltage, and thereafter, a write voltage for applying a voltage of a predetermined effective value to the liquid crystal layer is applied to the opposite electrode of the liquid crystal cell. It is characterized in that it is sequentially applied during the period.
[0020]
According to this driving method, it is possible to cause the liquid crystal display device to perform an image display in which a pixel portion of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell is rewritten, and to maintain favorable operation characteristics of the liquid crystal cell.
[0021]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention uses a liquid crystal cell in which liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a first metastable state and a second metastable state, and sets a reset voltage and a metastable selection voltage between electrodes of each pixel portion. One of the first and second metastable states is selected by applying a voltage, and after the selection of the metastable state, the effective value of the driving voltage is controlled by applying a writing voltage to align the liquid crystal molecules in a desired state. By doing so, the light transmission state is controlled in a plurality of stages in each of the first and second metastable states.
[0022]
The liquid crystal display device includes a drive system for driving the liquid crystal cell, and the drive system applies the reset voltage to each pixel portion of the liquid crystal cell to apply the reset voltage to the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules before that. After resetting, a metastable state selection voltage is applied to securely orient the liquid crystal molecules in the first or second metastable state, and thereafter, a writing voltage is applied to rewrite and display an image. And, among the voltage for selecting the first metastable state and the voltage for selecting the second metastable state, at least the absolute value of the metastable state selection voltage having a larger absolute value, By applying a voltage having a polarity opposite to that of the reset voltage, the bias of the charge generated between the two substrates of the liquid crystal cell due to the application of the reset voltage is reduced, and the operation characteristics of the liquid crystal cell are kept good. One in which the.
[0023]
In the liquid crystal display device of the present invention, the initial alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell is such that the liquid crystal molecules have a twist angle of approximately 0 ° to approximately 180 ° in one direction with respect to the alignment processing direction of one of the substrates. A non-twisted or twisted splay alignment state, wherein the first metastable state is a state in which liquid crystal molecules are further twisted by approximately 180 ° in the one direction from the initial alignment state to eliminate splay distortion, The second metastable state is a state in which liquid crystal molecules are twisted from the initial alignment state by approximately 180 ° in a direction opposite to the one direction to eliminate splay distortion.
[0024]
Further, in the method of driving a liquid crystal cell according to the present invention, after supplying the reset voltage for a predetermined period, at least one of the first and second metastable state selection voltages having different absolute values has a larger absolute value. Is selectively supplied with a metastable state selection voltage having a polarity opposite to the polarity of the reset voltage, and thereafter, a write voltage for applying a voltage of a predetermined effective value to the liquid crystal layer is applied to the opposite electrode of the liquid crystal cell. It is applied sequentially between them.
[0025]
In this driving method, it is preferable to drive the pixel units of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell by rewriting the pixel units of one pixel row every predetermined number of frames. In this case, a rewriting frame for rewriting is used. The write voltage is applied after sequentially applying the reset voltage and the metastable state selection voltage between the electrodes of the pixel portion, and the write voltage applied in the rewrite frame before the frame is applied to the other frames. It is only necessary to apply a write voltage having the same absolute value.
[0026]
Further, in this driving method, all the pixel rows of the liquid crystal cell are divided into groups of a plurality of rows, and resetting of the pixel portion of each pixel row of one group and selection of the metastable state are performed for each frame. It is desirable to write the pixel portion of the pixel row.
[0027]
In this case, it is preferable that the grouping of the pixel rows is selected such that the organization of the pixel rows of each group is changed every cycle of resetting and metastable state selection and writing of the pixel rows of all groups.

In this liquid crystal display device, when the first metastable state is selected, the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is a twist alignment state in which the twist angle is as large as approximately 270 °. Since the optical rotation differs for each wavelength light due to dispersion, each wavelength light passes through the back-side

As described above, the display in the TN mode when the first metastable state is selected is a color display in which a colored display is obtained, and the display color is the driving voltage of the driving voltage applied between the

That is, the liquid crystal molecules rise and align according to the effective value of the driving voltage while maintaining the alignment state in the metastable state. When the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules changes in this manner, the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer corresponding thereto changes. Since the optical rotation of each wavelength changes due to a change in optical rotation dispersion in accordance with the change of the color, it is possible to change the color of the colored light by controlling the effective value of the drive voltage. Color can be displayed.

In the color display, the light is colored by utilizing the birefringent action of the liquid crystal layer of the

On the other hand, when the second metastable state is selected, the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is a twist alignment state in which the twist angle is approximately 90 °, and the display in the TN mode at this time is a normal TN type liquid crystal display. This is basically the same as the device, and in the liquid crystal display device of this embodiment, the front
[0070]
In this case, the liquid crystal molecules rise and align in accordance with the effective value of the drive voltage, and the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer changes accordingly, so that by controlling the effective value of the drive voltage, the light transmission state can be changed. By controlling in a stepwise manner, monochrome display with gradation can be performed.
[0071]
The above-mentioned initial alignment state, that is, the state in which the liquid crystal molecules are twist-aligned at a twist angle of about 90 ° with a splay distortion is not used for actual display, but the initial alignment state is also a black and white display in the TN mode. It is in a state where it can be done.
[0072]

[0073]
First, the initial alignment state will be described. The voltage-emission rate characteristic in the initial alignment state is as shown in FIG. 4A, and the change in display color with respect to the driving voltage is as shown in FIG. In addition, when the effective value of the driving voltage is 0 V (in a state where no voltage is applied), the voltage is white, and when a voltage of an effective value (for example, about 5 V) at which the liquid crystal molecules rise and align substantially vertically is applied, the color is black.
[0074]
The rising alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is almost vertical when the above-described reset voltage is applied, and the display becomes blackest at that time. However, since the reset voltage application time is extremely short, the state in the reset state is small. The display is almost invisible to the human eye.
[0075]
In addition, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the first metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 5A, and the change in the display color with respect to the drive voltage is the effective value as shown in FIG. Are red when a voltage of 1.95 V is applied, and are blue when a voltage of 2.98 V is applied.
[0076]
Note that the x, y coordinates of the red color are x = 0.353, y = 0.350, and the Y value (brightness) is 28.54. The x, y coordinate values of the blue are x = 0.274, y = 0.296, and the Y value is 11.64.
[0077]
Further, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the second metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 6A, and the change of the display color with respect to the drive voltage is the effective value as shown in FIG. Are white when a voltage of 1.55V is applied, and black when an effective value of 3.07V is applied.
[0078]
Note that the x, y coordinate values of the white are x = 0.317, y = 0.341, and the Y value is 34.41. The x, y coordinate values of the black are x = 0.271, y = 0.290, and the Y value is 1.83.
[0079]
That is, the liquid crystal display device displays red and blue by selecting the first metastable state and displays white and black by selecting the second metastable state. In addition to the white and black display described above, two color display of red and blue can be performed.
[0080]
When the power of the liquid crystal display device is turned off, the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules in the first or second metastable state is changed for several seconds to several minutes by spontaneous discharge (the characteristics of the nematic liquid crystal used and the characteristics of the chiral agent and (Depending on the amount) and returns to the initial alignment state, and the entire screen is in the initial alignment state when no voltage is applied (white in the above embodiment).
[0081]
The liquid crystal display device has electro-optical characteristics of two display devices having different alignment states of liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal cell, and includes a plurality of transmission states among transmission states to be controlled stepwise. Since the control of the state can be performed using one electro-optical characteristic and the control of other plural transmission states can be performed using the other electro-optical characteristic, the total number of stages of the transmission state is When the one electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, when the transmission state is controlled by selecting the first meta-stable state, and when the other electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, the second meta-stable state is selected. When the transmission state is controlled, the number of stages driven in each metastable state is reduced. Therefore, in each metastable state, the time division driving of a small number of stages is performed. Row Ukoto can.

[0102]
In the liquid crystal display device, the first metastable state (the state in which the liquid crystal molecules are twisted at a twist angle of about 210 ° in one direction) is selected, and the second metastable state (the liquid crystal molecules are twisted in one direction). Is different from the first metastable state in which the liquid crystal molecules are twisted at a twist angle of about 150 ° in the opposite direction), and the liquid crystal layer exhibits different birefringence accordingly. Therefore, different colors can be displayed when the first metastable state is selected and when the second metastable state is selected.

[0105]
First, the initial alignment state will be described. The voltage-emission rate characteristics in the initial alignment state are as shown in FIG. 8A, and the change of the display color with respect to the driving voltage is as shown in FIG. The color is yellow-green when the effective value of the drive voltage is 0 V (no voltage applied), and black when an effective value (for example, about 5 V) at which the liquid crystal molecules rise and align almost vertically is applied.
[0106]
In addition, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the first metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 9A, and the change in the display color with respect to the drive voltage is the effective value as shown in FIG. Are red when a voltage of 1.46 V is applied, and white when a voltage having an effective value of 2.00 V is applied.
[0107]
The coordinates of the red x, y coordinates are x = 0.432, y = 0.391, and the Y value (brightness) is 20.29. The x, y coordinate values of the white are x = 0.290, y = 0.319, and the Y value is 29.70.
[0108]
Further, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the second metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 10A, and the change of the display color with respect to the driving voltage is the effective value as shown in FIG. Are red when a voltage of 1.46 V is applied and blue when an effective value of 2.00 V is applied.
[0109]
The coordinates of the red x, y coordinates are x = 0.424, y = 0.399, and the Y value is 21.31. The x, y coordinate values of the blue are x = 0.249, y = 0.267, and the Y value is 11.32.
[0110]
That is, the liquid crystal display device selects the first metastable state to display red and white, and selects the second metastable state to display red and blue. A color display in which an image is displayed in red and blue in the background can be performed.
[0111]
Then, the liquid crystal display device of this embodiment changes the effective value of the drive voltage to red by selecting the second metastable state and displaying red and white by selecting the first metastable state. When displaying blue, it is only necessary to set the two values of 1.46 V and 2.00 V. Therefore, the difference between the effective values of the two drive voltages in the respective metastable states, that is, the operating voltage margin is set to the first value. In both the metastable state and the second metastable state, it can be set to a sufficiently large value of 0.54 V (= 2.00 V-1.46 V).
[0112]
Also, the two effective values when the first metastable state is selected and displayed are the same as the two effective values when the second metastable state is selected and displayed (1.46 V and 1.46 V). 2.00 V), which facilitates display driving.

[0129]
First, the initial alignment state will be described. The voltage-emission rate characteristics in the initial alignment state are as shown in FIG. 12A, and the change of the display color with respect to the driving voltage is as shown in FIG. In addition, when the effective value of the driving voltage is 0 V (in a state where no voltage is applied), the voltage is white, and when a voltage of an effective value (for example, about 5 V) at which the liquid crystal molecules rise and align substantially vertically is applied, the color is black.
[0130]
In addition, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the first metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 13A, and the change of the display color with respect to the drive voltage is the effective value as shown in FIG. Are red when a voltage of 1.53 V is applied, and orange when a voltage of 2.03 V is applied.

The red x, y coordinates are x = 0.343, y = 0.322, the Y value is 24.31, and the orange x, y coordinates are x = 0.322, y = 0. .378 and the Y value is 31.98.
[0132]
Further, the voltage-emission rate characteristic in the second metastable state is a characteristic as shown in FIG. 14A, and the change of the display color with respect to the drive voltage is, as shown in FIG. Is white when a voltage of 1.53 V is applied, and blue when a voltage of 2.03 V is applied.
[0133]
The x, y coordinate values of the white are x = 0.320, y = 0.349, the Y value is 34.36, and the x, y coordinate values of blue are x = 0.260, y = 0. 278, the Y value is 9.05.

That is, the liquid crystal display device displays red and orange by selecting the first metastable state, and displays white and blue by selecting the second metastable state. Color display in which an image is displayed in red, orange and blue in the background.
[0135]
The liquid crystal display device according to the present embodiment selects the second metastable state by selecting the second metastable state when displaying the red and orange colors by selecting the first metastable state. Also, when displaying blue and blue, it is only necessary to set two types, 1.53 V and 2.03 V. Therefore, the difference between the effective values of the two types of drive voltages in each metastable state, that is, the operating voltage margin, is set to In any of the first and second metastable states, it can be set to a sufficiently large value of 0.50 V (= 2.03 V−1.53 V).

[0137]
As described above, the liquid crystal display devices of the second and third embodiments also have the electro-optical characteristics of the two display devices in which the alignment states of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell are different from those of the first embodiment. This is a state in which the splay distortion is eliminated by twist orientation with a twist angle of about 180 ° in a direction opposite to the first metastable state with respect to the direction.
[0141]
Further, for example, when the initial alignment state is a twist alignment state in which liquid crystal molecules are aligned in one direction with a twist angle of about 180 ° with respect to the alignment processing direction of one substrate, the first metastable state is The second metastable state is a state in which the liquid crystal molecules are twist-aligned with a twist angle of about 360 ° in one direction with respect to the alignment processing direction of the one substrate to eliminate the splay distortion. Moreover, in this method, the pixel row in which the metastable state is selected is reset in all the remaining pixel rows and the metastable state selection is completed. Until the new writing period is reached, new writing is not performed. In particular, the pixel row for which the metastable state is selected earlier is lasted longer, so that the screen flickers.
[0165]
Therefore, in this embodiment, all the pixel rows of the
[0166]
Then, according to the method of this embodiment, writing to the pixel row for which the metastable state is selected, resetting the remaining pixel rows of the group and selection of the metastable state are completed, and then each pixel row of this group is , The writing is performed when the writing period for the pixel row is started and the writing period for the pixel row is started, so that a new writing is not performed even in the pixel row in which the reset and the metastable state selection are first performed in the group. The time during which the screen is left as it is is extremely short, so that the screen does not flicker.
[0167]
When the pixel rows of the
[0168]
Therefore, in the pixel row grouping, the number of pixel rows in one group is selected so as to obtain a high frame frequency, and the number of groups is not so large that the number of frames required to rewrite an image for one screen is large. It is desirable to choose.
[0169]
For example, simple matrix type liquid crystal cells include those having 32, 64, 128, etc. pixel lines. For example, if the liquid crystal cell has 64 pixel lines, It is preferable to divide the pixel rows into groups of 8 rows. If the number of pixel rows in one group is about 8 rows, a sufficiently high frame frequency can be obtained, and 64 rows can be divided into groups of 8 rows. If it is clear, the image for one screen is rewritten in about 8 to 9 frames, so that the screen switching is good.
[0170]
That is, for example, if the frame frequency is 1/30 sec, if the number of frames required to rewrite an image for one screen is 8 to 9 frames, about 3 to 4 screens can be rewritten per second. Therefore, it is possible to make the switching of the screen favorable.
[0171]
However, the grouping of the pixel rows is performed every time an image for one screen is rewritten, that is, every cycle of resetting the pixel rows of all the groups and selecting and writing the metastable state, and the pixel row of each group. It is desirable to choose to change the organization of the.
[0172]
This is because the display from the time of reset to the time of writing of a region (hereinafter referred to as a rewriting region) corresponding to a pixel row group to be rewritten by selecting a next metastable state by resetting a previous writing state and applying a writing voltage to the next row is applied. Since the state is different from the display state of a region (hereinafter, referred to as a non-rewrite region) corresponding to a pixel row group for maintaining the previous write state without performing the rewrite, the organization of the pixel rows of each group is always the same. This is because the boundary between the rewritable area and the non-rewritable area appears at the same place every cycle and display unevenness is conspicuous.
[0173]
That is, for example, as described above, the total number of pixel rows of the liquid crystal cell is 64, and the total number of pixel rows is divisible by the number of pixel rows of one group, as in the case of dividing it into groups of 8 rows. , The pixel rows are grouped into 1-8 rows, 9-16 rows, 17-24 rows... 57-64 rows, and the organization of the pixel rows of each group is always the same. Is fixed, and the boundary between the rewrite area and the non-rewrite area appears at the same place every cycle.
[0174]
On the other hand, as described above, if the pixel rows are grouped so that a part of the organization of the pixel rows of each group is changed every cycle, the boundary between the rewritable area and the non-rewritable area is changed every cycle. Because of the shift, display unevenness due to the difference between the display states of these regions can be made inconspicuous.
[0175]
An example will be described in which 64 pixel rows are divided into groups of 8 rows. For example, the last pixel row of each group and the first pixel row of the next group are overlapped and grouped, and one cycle is performed. The first to eighth rows, the eight to fifteen rows, the fifteen to twenty-two rows..., The rewriting of each pixel row group of 57 to 64 rows are performed one by one in one frame, and the second cycle is 64 to 7 rows, 7-14. Rows, 14 to 21 rows... 56 to 63 rows are sequentially rewritten one group at a time in one frame, and the third cycle is 63 to 6 rows, 6 to 13 rows, 13 to 20 rows. If the rewriting of each pixel row group of a row is performed one by one in one frame, the boundary between the rewriting area and the non-rewriting area can be shifted by one pixel row every cycle.
[0176]
Note that the overlap number of the pixel rows of each group is not limited to one row, and may be a plurality of rows. For example, if the overlap number of the pixel rows of each group is two rows, the rewrite area and the non-rewrite area are changed every cycle. Are shifted by two lines.
[0177]
However, if the total number of pixel rows of the liquid crystal cell is not divisible by the number of pixel rows in one group, the rewrite area and the non-rewrite area are changed every cycle even if some of the pixel rows in each group are not overlapped. Can be shifted.
[0178]
FIG. 16 shows a case where a liquid crystal cell having a total number of 64 pixel rows is divided into groups of 8 rows, and the boundary between the rewrite area and the non-rewrite area is shifted by one pixel row every cycle. FIG. 9 is a waveform diagram of a scanning signal and a data signal when driven by the scanning method. Here, the scanning signals C1, C2, C8, and C9 supplied to the scanning electrodes in the first, second, eighth, and ninth rows. And the waveform of the data signal S1 supplied to the signal electrodes in the first column.
[0179]
As shown in FIG. 16, in this driving method, the initial periods of all the frames T1, T2,... Are each a reset / metastable state selection period TS of one pixel row group, and the remaining periods are 1 to 64 rows. Is the writing period TD of all the pixel rows.
[0180]
In this embodiment, the reset / metastable state selection period TS is divided into nine equal parts, namely, first to ninth periods TS1 to TS9, and one group of pixel rows (eight rows) is divided into the first divided period TS1. The first row is reset, the metastable state of the first row is selected and the second row is reset in the second divided period TS2, and so on. Thus, the metastable state of the seventh row is selected and the eighth row is reset in the eighth divided period TS8, and the metastable state of the eighth row is selected in the last ninth divided period TS9. In each of the above periods, for example, the reset / metastable state selection period TS is about 300 msec, and each of the divided periods TS1 to TS9 is about 33 msec.
[0181]
In this driving method, the writing period TD is equally divided into 64 periods TD1 to TD64, which is the same as the number of pixel rows of the

The scanning signal and the data signal will be described. Each scanning signal supplied to each scanning electrode of the
[0183]
The reset potential VR is supplied to each scanning signal when the last pixel row of each group and the first pixel row of the next group are overlapped and grouped, except for the first pixel row of each group. The reset potential VR is supplied to the last pixel row of each group once every nine frames (one cycle), once at the end of the reset period of one frame and once at the beginning of the next frame.
[0184]
Also, the address period VC is supplied to each scanning signal once every frame, and the period during which the reset potential VR is supplied shifts by one reset period every nine frames. The period during which the potential VC is supplied is the same period (selection period of a pixel row to which a scan electrode to which the scan signal is applied) in any frame.
[0185]
On the other hand, each data signal applied to each signal electrode of the

[0187]
The potentials of + VS2D and -VS2D are the same in absolute value, and the potential difference of the scanning signal with respect to the reference potential V0 is the selection voltage in the second metastable state (when the liquid crystal molecules are in the initial alignment state) (A low-valued voltage that is oriented at an inclination angle that is almost the same as or close to the pretilt angle of the above).
[0188]
Further, the potential of the reset / metastable state selection period TS in each frame T1, T2... Of the data signal is VS1 and -VS2D in the frame where the reset potential VR of the scanning signal is -VR. In a frame in which VR becomes + VR, they are VS1 and + VS2D.
[0189]
In this embodiment, the absolute value of the writing period potential VC (+ VC and -VC) of the scanning signal is equal to the potential difference between + VS2D and -VS2D of the data signal in the first and second metastable states, respectively. It is set so that different effective values of the driving voltage can be obtained.
[0190]
That is, in this embodiment, of the writing period potentials VC of the scanning signal, the + writing period potential + VC and the potential difference of the data signal with respect to + VS2D are the driving voltages in the first and second metastable states shown in FIG. A writing voltage for obtaining an alignment state (upper alignment state in FIG. 3) when the effective value of the driving voltage among the liquid crystal molecule alignment states corresponding to the effective value is relatively low, and a writing period potential of + The write voltage for obtaining the alignment state (the lower alignment state in FIG. 3) when the potential difference between + VC and −VS2D of the data signal is a somewhat high effective value of the drive voltage, and the write period potential of −. A write voltage for obtaining an alignment state when the potential difference between −VC and + VS2D of the data signal with respect to + VS2D is a high value, a −write period potential −VC and the data The write voltage of the potential difference between the -VS2D signals get alignment state when said effective value is a low value.
[0191]
In addition, the absolute value of the reset potential VR of the scanning signal has a potential difference (reset voltage) sufficient to cause liquid crystal molecules to rise and align substantially vertically with respect to any of the potentials of the data signal VS1, + VS2D and -VS2D. Is set to a value that can be obtained.
[0192]
FIG. 17 shows the first row, second row, eighth row, and ninth row of the first column when the scanning signals C1, C2, C8, and C9 and the data signal S1 have waveforms as shown in FIG. FIG. 3 is a waveform diagram of a voltage applied between a scanning electrode in a row and a signal electrode in a first column, where C1−S1 is a voltage applied between the scanning electrode in the first row and the signal electrode; S1 is a voltage applied between the scanning electrode in the second row and the signal electrode, C8-S1 is a voltage applied between the scanning electrode in the eighth row and the signal electrode, and C9-S1 is a ninth voltage. 2 shows a voltage applied between a scanning electrode of a row and the signal electrode.
[0193]
The driving of the pixel units in each row of the
[0194]
First, the rewriting of an image for one screen in the first cycle will be described. In the figure, in the first frame (hereinafter, referred to as a first frame) T1, the first divided period TS1 of the reset / metastable state selection period TS1 , A reset voltage corresponding to the difference between the reset potential VR of the scanning signal C1 and the potential of the data signal S1 is applied between the electrodes of the pixel unit of the first row in the pixel row group of 1 to 8 rows. The liquid crystal molecules in the portion rise almost vertically and are aligned, and the previous writing state, that is, the previous metastable state and the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules in that state are reset.
[0195]
The reset of the previous alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is performed not only when the next writing is performed by selecting a metastable state different from the previous metastable state but also by selecting the same metastable state as the previous metastable state. It is also performed when performing.
[0196]
Next, during the second divided period TS2 of the reset / metastable state selection period TS2, the difference between the reference potential V0 of the scanning signal C1 and the potential of the data signal S1 between the electrodes of the pixel unit in the first row. A metastable state selection voltage is applied to select the first or second metastable state of the liquid crystal molecules in the pixel section, and at the same time, the scanning signal C2 between the electrodes in the pixel section in the second row. A reset voltage corresponding to the difference between the reset potential VR and the potential of the data signal S1 is applied, and the pixel unit on the second row is reset.
[0197]
Next, in the third divided period TS3 of the reset / metastable state selection period TS, the difference between the reference potential V0 of the scanning signal C2 and the potential of the data signal S1 between the electrodes of the pixel unit in the second row. And the second row of pixel units is selected to be in the first or second metastable state, and at the same time, the reset voltage is applied between the electrodes of the third row of pixel units. Then, the pixel portion of the third row is reset.
[0198]
Hereinafter, similarly, for each divided period of the reset / metastable state selection period TS 1, the metastable state selection of the pixel unit in one row and the reset of the pixel unit in the next row are sequentially performed, and the last In the nine-segment period TS9, the pixel unit in the eighth row, which is the last row of one group, is selected in the first or second metastable state.
[0199]
The reset potential VR of each of the scanning signals C1, C2,... C8 in the reset / metastable state selection period TS of the first frame T1 is either one of + or-with respect to the reference potential V0. In FIG. 16, the waveform of the data signal S1 in this period TS is the first metastable state selection potential VS1 or ++ with respect to this potential VS1 for each of the divided periods TS1, TS2,. In this driving method, as described above, the potential of the data signal during the reset / metastable state selection period TS 1 is set to − and the reset potential VR of the scanning signal is set to −. In the frame in which the reset potential VR is + VR, VS1 and -VS2D are used in the frame in which the reset potential VR is + VR. 2 metastable state select voltage is applied as a reverse polarity voltage to the reset voltage.
[0200]
In this embodiment, as described above, the absolute value of the reset potential VR is set to be sufficient to cause the liquid crystal molecules to rise almost vertically to any potential of the data signals VS1, + VS2D, and -VS2D. Since each pixel portion is set to a value that can obtain an appropriate potential difference, each pixel portion can be reliably reset.
[0201]
The above-mentioned metastable state selection voltage (the difference between the reference potential V0 of the scanning signals C1, C2... C8 and the potential of the data signal S1) applied to each pixel unit after the reset is applied to the
[0202]
That is, when the data signal S1 has a waveform as shown in FIG. 16, the data signal potential in the second divided period TS2 for selecting the metastable state of the pixel unit in the first row is the same as the reference potential V0 of the scanning signal C1. Since the potential is VS1, a metastable state selection voltage of approximately 0 V is applied to the liquid crystal layer, and the liquid crystal molecules in the pixel portion on the first row are aligned in the first metastable state described above.
[0203]
In the waveform of the data signal S1 in FIG. 16, the data signal potential in the third divided period TS3 for selecting the metastable state of the pixel unit in the second row is + VS2D. A metastable state selection voltage having a value that aligns at a tilt angle substantially equal to or close to the pretilt angle in the above is applied, and the liquid crystal molecules of the pixel portion in the second row are aligned in the above-described second metastable state.
[0204]
After the metastable state of the pixel units in the first to eighth rows is selected in this manner, in the first row write period TD1 of the next write period TD, the pixel units in the first row apply the scan signal C1. A writing voltage corresponding to the difference between the writing period potential VC and the potential of the data signal S1 is applied between the electrodes and writing is performed. Similarly, in the second row writing period TD2, the pixel portion of the second row, Pixel units in the third row in the third row writing period TD3... Pixel units in all rows are rewritten in the order of the pixel units in the 64th row in the 64th row writing period TD64.
[0205]
Note that the writing period potential VC of each scanning signal in the writing period TD of the first frame T1 is either one of + or-with respect to the reference potential V0 (+ VC in FIG. 16). The waveform of the data signal S1 in the period TD is a waveform in which one of the potentials + VS2D or -VS2D is selected in accordance with the write data in each of the write periods TD1, TD2,.
[0206]
Therefore, for example, as shown in FIG. 16, when the writing period potential VC of each scanning signal is + VC and the data signal potential in the first row writing period TD1 is -VS2D, the pixel portion of the first row has + VC and + VC. A write voltage corresponding to the potential difference between −VS2D and −VS2D is applied, and the effective value of the drive voltage until the first row write period TD1 of the next frame (hereinafter, referred to as a second frame) T2 becomes a somewhat high value. This pixel portion is in a first writing state in which liquid crystal molecules are oriented to the orientation state when a high effective value voltage is applied among the orientation states in the metastable state shown in FIG.
[0207]
In the waveform of the data signal S1 in FIG. 16, the data signal potential in the second row writing period TD2 is + VS2D, and therefore, a writing voltage corresponding to the potential difference between + VC and + VS2D is applied to the pixel portion in the second row. Therefore, the effective value of the drive voltage until the second row writing period TD2 of the next second frame T2 becomes a relatively small value, and the pixel portion of the second row becomes the metastable state shown in FIG. The second writing state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned to the alignment state when a low effective value voltage is applied among the alignment states in the state.
[0208]
The same applies to the pixel units in other rows. If the data signal potential in the writing period TD2 of that row is −VS2D, the pixel unit is in the first write state to which the high effective value voltage is applied. When the data signal potential is + VS2D, the pixel portion enters the second writing state to which the low effective value voltage is applied.
[0209]
When the writing of the pixel portion of the 64th row, which is the last row, is completed and the next second frame T2 starts, in the second frame T2, during the reset / metastable state selection period TS, the first frame T1 , The pixel units of each row of the 8 to 15 pixel row groups including the last pixel row of the pixel row group (1 to 8 rows) for which the selection of the metastable state has been performed are sequentially reset, and the first or the first pixel row is reset. 2 are selected in the metastable state, and in the subsequent writing period TD, the pixel units of 1 to 64 rows are sequentially written.
[0210]
In the second frame T2, the waveforms of the scanning signals and the data signals are inverted with respect to the waveform of the first frame T1, but the resetting of the pixel portion in each row, the selection of the metastable state, and the subsequent writing are performed in the first frame. This is performed in the same manner as in the frame T1.
[0211]
That is, for example, the pixel unit on the eighth row is reset in the first divided period TS1 of the reset / metastable state selection period TS2 in the second frame T2 following the first frame T1 and also in the second frame T2. The metastable state is selected, and writing is performed in the eighth writing period TD8 of the next writing period TD. As shown in FIG. 16, the liquid crystal molecules in the pixel portion of the eighth row are The first metastable state is selected in the second divided period TS2 for selecting the metastable state, and a second write state in which a low effective value voltage is applied is applied in an eighth row write period TD8 for writing the row. .
[0212]
In the pixel portion on the ninth row, only resetting and metastable state selection are not performed in the first frame T1 and only writing is performed. In the second frame T2, the second division of the reset / metastable state
[0213]
The pixel portion of the eighth row, which is the first row in the pixel row group of 8 to 15 rows that performs the reset and the metastable state selection in the second frame T2, is once reset and quasi-stable in the previous first frame T1. Stable state selection and writing are performed. In the second frame T2, the writing state in the first frame T1 is reset. After the metastable state is selected again, writing is performed again, and the next third frame T3 is written. The writing state according to the effective value of the drive voltage until the eighth row writing period TD8 is reached.
[0214]
In addition, the write voltage applied to the pixel units in all the rows other than the pixel row group of 8 to 15 rows in which the reset and the selection of the metastable state are performed in the second frame T2 is the same as the write voltage in the first frame T1. This is a rewriting voltage for maintaining, and the rewriting voltage applied to the pixel portion in these rows is the same as the writing voltage in the first frame T1.
[0215]
Thereafter, similarly, for each frame, resetting of one pixel row group, selection of a metastable state, and writing of all pixel rows are performed. In the ninth frame, resetting and resetting of pixel row groups of 57 to 64 rows are performed. The metastable state selection and writing of all the pixel rows are performed, and the image for one screen is rewritten.
[0216]
In the next one cycle (the tenth to eighteenth frames), one of the pixel row groups of 64 to 7 rows, 7 to 14 rows, 14 to 21 rows,. Reset of one group, selection of a metastable state, and writing of all pixel rows are performed, and an image for one screen is rewritten.
[0219]
Further, in the next one cycle (the 19th to 27th frames), each of the pixel row groups of 63 to 6 rows, 6 to 13 rows, 13 to 20 rows. Reset of one group, selection of a metastable state, and writing of all pixel rows are performed, and an image for one screen is rewritten.
[0218]
Furthermore, in the next one cycle (the 28th to 36th frames), each of the pixel row groups of 62 to 5 rows, 5 to 12 rows, 12 to 19 rows,. Is reset, the metastable state is selected, and all the pixel rows are written, and the image for one screen is rewritten.
[0219]
In these cycles, the rewriting of the display in one of the nine frames is performed in the eight rows of pixel units of the group in which the reset and metastable states are selected in that frame and subsequently written. As described above, the pixel units in the other rows are applied with the rewrite voltage having the same absolute value as the write voltage applied in the previous rewrite frame, and thereafter, the rewrite voltage is applied for each subsequent frame. Thus, the write state written in the previous rewrite frame is maintained until the next rewrite frame for rewriting the pixel row.
[0220]
In each pixel row, rows that overlap with two groups (for example, 1 to 8 rows, 8 to 15 rows, 15 to 22 rows... 57 to 66 rows in the first cycle, 8 rows and 15 rows) ,
[0221]
Note that the metastable state selection and writing in the previous frame of the two consecutive frames for the pixel units in these rows are temporary until reset again in the next frame. The selection and writing of the metastable state in the previous frame should be the same as the previous metastable state and writing state, or the same as the metastable state and the writing state selected in the next frame. desirable.
[0222]
As described above, in the method of driving the liquid crystal cell, the
[0223]
For this reason, the liquid crystal display device retains the written state written in the rewrite frame by performing rewrite by applying the same absolute value of the write voltage in each frame until the next rewrite frame. The repetition rewrites the pixel portion of each pixel row every predetermined number of frames to display an image.
[0224]
In the liquid crystal display device, the rewriting of the pixel portion of each pixel row of the
[0225]
Then, the liquid crystal display device, as in the driving method, is configured to select the first metastable state and the second metastable state, and select the second metastable state having the larger absolute value. Since a voltage having a polarity opposite to that of the reset voltage is applied as the stable state selection voltage, the bias of the charge generated between the two substrates of the
[0226]
That is, since the reset voltage is a voltage having a large absolute value that causes the liquid crystal molecules to rise almost vertically and be aligned, ionic impurities in the liquid crystal gather on one substrate side when this reset voltage is applied, and the reset voltage is applied between the two substrates. Of the
[0227]
However, as described above, if a voltage having a polarity opposite to that of the reset voltage is applied as the second metastable state selection voltage having a larger absolute value, the electric charge between the two substrates caused by the application of the reset voltage is increased. Since the bias is alleviated by the application of the metastable state selection voltage having the opposite polarity, the operation characteristics of the
[0228]
Note that the first metastable state selection voltage, which is a voltage of approximately 0 V, does not have the effect of alleviating the bias of the charge, but the first metastable state selection voltage of the opposite polarity and the first metastable state selection voltage, which is a voltage of approximately 0 V, Since the metastable state selection voltage is randomly applied in accordance with display data, the number of times these metastable state selection voltages are applied during display driving has a probability of approximately 1/2, so Each time the metastable state selection voltage is applied, the bias of the charges is reduced, and the operation characteristics of the
[0229]
Further, the liquid crystal display device rewrites the pixel portion of each pixel row of the
[0230]
That is, in the metastable state, the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules changes according to the effective value of the drive voltage, but the twist alignment state is maintained as it is, and the reset voltage is applied to the selected metastable state. Rewriting to change only the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules without changing the metastable state is performed by applying only the write voltage without omitting the reset of the previous alignment state and the selection of the next metastable state. Can also be performed.
[0231]
However, considering the responsiveness of the liquid crystal, compared to the case where the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules is changed while maintaining the same metastable state, once the liquid crystal molecules are aligned almost vertically and the metastable state is selected again. Applying a write voltage thereafter can align the liquid crystal molecules in a predetermined write state at a much higher response speed.
[0232]
Therefore, in the above-described liquid crystal display device, rewriting in the rewriting frame is performed without resetting the alignment state of the liquid crystal molecules and selecting the next metastable state before applying the writing voltage regardless of the previous writing state. In this way, even when rewriting is performed to change only the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules without changing the metastable state, the writing can be performed at high speed.
[0233]
Further, in the driving method of the above embodiment, all the pixel rows of the
[0234]
In this case, in the above-described embodiment, the grouping of the pixel rows is selected such that the organization of the pixel rows of each group is changed every cycle of resetting, metastable state selection and writing of the pixel rows of all groups. Therefore, in each cycle, the previous write state is reset, the next metastable state is selected, and the pixel row group to be rewritten by applying the write voltage corresponds to the corresponding rewrite area, and the previous rewrite area without rewriting. The boundary between the pixel row group that maintains the written state and the corresponding non-rewritable area is shifted, so that display unevenness due to the difference in display state between these areas can be made inconspicuous.
[0235]
In the above driving method, the pixel rows of the
[0236]
Further, in each frame, the selection order of the reset and the metastable state and the selection order of the pixel row groups in which the new writing is performed may be every other group or every plural groups. The screen flicker can be further reduced by resetting each pixel row of the group, selecting a metastable state, and performing new writing thereafter.
[0237]
Further, in the above-described driving method, in order to simplify the configuration of the
[0238]
The above driving method can be applied to the driving of the liquid crystal cell of the liquid crystal display device of the first embodiment. In this case, there are two ways of selecting and displaying the first metastable state. Since the effective value and the two effective values when the second metastable state is selected and displayed are different from each other, four kinds of writing potentials are generated by the
[0239]
【The invention's effect】
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has the electro-optical characteristics of two display devices in which the alignment states of liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal cell are different from each other. Can be controlled using one electro-optical characteristic, and the other plural transmission states can be controlled using the other electro-optical characteristic.
[0240]
For this reason, according to this liquid crystal display device, the total number of stages of the transmission state is determined when the one electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, when the transmission state is controlled by selecting the first metastable state. When the other electro-optical characteristic is used, that is, when the transmission state is controlled by selecting the second metastable state, the number of stages driven in each metastable state can be reduced. Therefore, in each metastable state, time-division driving with a small number of stages can be performed.
[0241]
Therefore, according to this liquid crystal display device, it is possible to increase the operating voltage margin with respect to the drive duty, to enable time-division driving with a high duty, and to display a high-definition image with a large number of pixels.
[0242]
The liquid crystal display device includes a drive system for driving the liquid crystal cell. The drive system causes a reset voltage and a metastable state selection voltage to be applied between the electrodes of the pixel portion of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell. Are sequentially applied, and by applying a write voltage, the pixel portion of each pixel row is rewritten to display an image. In the present invention, the voltage for selecting the first metastable state and the voltage Of the voltages for selecting the second metastable state, a voltage having a polarity opposite to the reset voltage is applied as a metastable state selection voltage having at least a larger absolute value. The bias of the charge generated between the two substrates of the liquid crystal cell due to the application of the reset voltage, which is a voltage having a large absolute value that causes the liquid crystal cell to rise substantially vertically, is reduced by applying the metastable state selection voltage having the opposite polarity. It can, therefore, can be kept operating characteristics of the liquid crystal cell better.
[0243]
Further, in the method for driving a liquid crystal cell according to the present invention, after resetting the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules before applying the reset voltage between the electrodes of the pixel portions of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell, A metastable state selection voltage is applied to orient the liquid crystal molecules in one of the first and second metastable states, and thereafter, a write voltage for controlling an effective value of the drive voltage is applied to rewrite. And a voltage for selecting the first metastable state and a voltage for selecting the second metastable state, the metastable state selection voltage having at least a larger absolute value with respect to the reset voltage. Since a voltage of a reverse polarity is applied, the liquid crystal display device can perform an image display in which a pixel portion of each pixel row of the liquid crystal cell is rewritten, and the liquid crystal cell can be displayed. It is possible to maintain a good work characteristics.
