図１および図３に示すように、犬の頭部からクッション体１３を被せ、これを首まで押し下げた後、絞り紐１５により口布１４を絞り、アジャスタ１７によりその長さを維持する。これにより、犬の首とクッション体１３の内周部との隙間がなくなり、この状態を保持することで、動物用保護カラー１０が犬の首回りに装着される。このとき、動物用保護カラー１０が首に固定されていない。そのため、犬は装着前と変わらず上下左右、自由に首を動かすことができ、ストレスが小さい。
このように、動物用保護カラー１０の本体をドーナツ状のクッション体１３としたため、犬の視野を狭めることがない。しかも、犬が胴体の怪我や手術後の傷口、皮膚疾患の患部に向かって口を近付けようとしても、クッション体１３の膨れた外周部が邪魔をしてその患部を舐めたり噛んだりすることができない。また、後足で頭部を引っ掻こうとした場合も同様である。さらには、このようにクッション体１３がドーナツ状であるため、食事の際にクッション体１３の下部が皿の手前側で落ち着き、動物用保護カラー１０が皿に被さらず飲食の邪魔にならない。

また、クッション体１３が柔らかいため、使用中に動物用保護カラー１０と擦れて首回りの皮膚を傷付けたり、首回りが脱毛したり、皮膚炎を発症することがない。しかも、歩行中、障害物に衝突してもストレスの１つの原因となる衝突音や首への衝撃はほとんど生じない。さらに、犬が狭い隙間を通る際にも、隙間に合わせてクッション体１３が変形するため、この隙間を支障なく通過することができる。また、犬の首への動物用保護カラー１０の掛止具として絞り紐１５およびアジャスタ１７を採用したため、このカラーを着脱する時に不快な着脱音が発生しない。
さらにまた、動物用保護カラー１０は、クッション体１３を枕にして、どこでも犬が休める機能を有している。すなわち、犬が眠たくなったときには、どのような睡眠姿勢をとっても、ドーナツ状のクッション体１３が顎下と床面とのあいだの空間を埋める。これにより、動物用保護カラー１０が犬の快適な枕となる。
また、クッション体１３は、内周部の曲率半径より外周部の曲率半径の方を大きくしている。これにより、動物用保護カラー１０を枕としたとき、クッション体１３と床面との接触面積が大きくなり、安定性が高い寝心地のいい犬用枕となる。

また、クッション体１３の周方向のうち、弾性布１６との対向領域を、中綿１２の充填密度が高い高密度領域Ａとしている（図２）。これにより、クッション体１３の重心はクッション体１３の中心位置より弾性布１６側に偏る。その結果、仮に犬の動きに伴いクッション体１３が犬の首回りを回動し、弾性布１６が喉との対向位置からずれても、最終的に重心の作用によって、クッション体１３が位置ずれを解消する方向に回動し、弾性布１６は犬の喉との対向位置に戻る。
