The disclosure is incorporated by reference in its entirety.
The present invention relates to a multi-pane insulating glass unit having a third pane formed from a relaxed film supported by either a flexible frame or edge spacers and a method for its fabrication.
Insulating glass units having a third pane, or even more panes, in the form of a plastic sheet or multilayer film supported between a pair of glass panes are known. The glass panes are connected to each other via at least one circumferential spacer, at least a primary seal, and a secondary seal provided along an edge of the glass pane. The third pane creates a space between each of the glass panes, and the space may be filled with air or gas to reduce thermal conductance across the window structure. Any inert, low heat transfer gas may be used, including krypton, argon, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon dioxide, etc. This fill gas may contain some appreciable amount of oxygen to prevent or minimize yellowing of the interior surface of the plastic third pane. One example of an insulating glass unit is illustrated in FIG. In this design, the third pane includes low-e coated PET film, which is a high cost component. The third pane is securely secured to the circumferential spacer, the primary seal, and the secondary seal. This process requires at least a secondary sealant to be fully heat cured first to support the film during the heated wrinkle removal step. A fully assembled unit results in very inefficient heat transfer to the film, which requires 2-4 hours, typically closer to 4 hours, to assemble. One of the main drawbacks of this design, in addition to the long assembly time, is that the film often wrinkles, which means that since the film is fully integrated into the system, the entire unit This means that it must be destroyed. Even when the film is attached to the spacer, any distortion of the unit during shipping or operation will cause the film to wrinkle, even if no leakage occurs. Designs that include multiple intermediate panes necessarily have additional interfaces between the intermediate panes and the primary and secondary seals, which increases the risk of air intrusion.
Many prior art insulating glass units with two panels cannot achieve better than R5 thermal performance.
There is a need in the art for an insulating glass unit that is quick and easy to assemble, where the occurrence of third pane wrinkles is minimized. There is also a need in the art for an insulating glass unit that allows for the presence of additional intermediate panes without creating additional interfaces.

The use of the divider polymer film of the present invention having a low thermal mass reduces the wrinkle removal temperature in less than 1 hour or even less than 1 second, compared to the total prior art wrinkle removal time of 2 to 4 hours. may reach. The invention also allows for interchangeability with respect to various combinations of glass thickness, low-e coatings and location of these coatings within the unit. This allows the manufacturer to adapt the design to provide the desired cost/performance trade-off for a given building, geographic area, or code requirements. Supporting the center divider or third pane on a separate structure allows offset of the divider from the centerline of the unit more easily than in the prior art. This allows easier muntin placement/addition while still improving thermal performance. Also, unlike the prior art where intermediate panes are integrated into a unit, the system of the present invention may be separated into subcomponents for assembly. This allows for improved yield of the final system by allowing scrapping of off-spec parts early in the process. It is also much easier to include multiple intermediate panels or panes within a unit.

Reference is now made to FIGS. 2-3, which illustrate a multi-pane insulating glass unit, designated generally as 10, according to embodiments of the invention.
This annealing step releases tension within
Depending on the type of
According to the embodiments shown in FIGS. 2, 3, and 4A-4C, at least one

The FIG. 4B arrangement shows a pair of
The FIG. 4C arrangement shows a pair of
According to the embodiment of FIG. 4D, the

According to one embodiment, adhesive 22 may be used to securely
According to one embodiment, and with reference to FIGS. 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8A, and 8B, the
