Description
The present invention relates to a cartridge.
Conventionally, image forming devices such as copying machines, printers, and facsimiles using electrophotography or electrostatic recording methods are provided with a developing device that supplies toner (developer) to an electrostatic latent image formed on an electrophotographic photosensitive body as an image carrier to form a toner image. In recent years, developing cartridges or process cartridges in which the developing device is detachably attached to the main body of the image forming device, either alone or together with other process means, have been widely used. The cartridge system in which the developing cartridge or process cartridge (hereinafter also simply referred to as "cartridge") is detachably attached to the main body of the image forming device makes it easy to replenish toner and perform other maintenance work.
In a cartridge-type image forming apparatus, when the toner in the toner container of the developing device runs out, an operator such as a user or a serviceman replaces the cartridge or replenishes the toner. For this reason, the cartridge-type image forming apparatus has a detection unit that detects the amount of toner in order to notify the user or the like that it is time to replace the cartridge.
Meanwhile, in recent years, activities to collect and recycle used cartridges have become more common. Reusable parts of collected cartridges are recycled as new cartridges after going through processes such as disassembly, cleaning, and repair. Generally, in the recycling process, identification information indicating whether the cartridge frame has been disassembled is stored in an electrical storage device attached to the cartridge. Alternatively, an electrical storage device containing the identification information is attached to a new cartridge.
In recent years, as described in
The object of the present invention is to provide a technology that can accurately detect the amount of developer even when recycling a cartridge of an image forming device with an electrical storage device still attached.

The
When a print start signal is input to the

Meanwhile, at a predetermined control timing, the
The recording material P with the toner image transferred thereto is separated from the

A process cartridge is generally a cartridge in which an image carrier such as a photosensitive member and a process means acting on the image carrier are integrated into one cartridge, and the cartridge is detachable from the main body of an image forming apparatus. Examples of the process means include a charging means, a developing means, a cleaning means, and a toner charging means for charging the transfer residual toner. Here, the process cartridge is defined as a cartridge in which at least a developer container or a developing device and an image carrier are integrated into one cartridge, and the cartridge is detachable from the main body of an image forming apparatus.

In the developing
Meanwhile, in the
The
In relation to the electrodes that detect the amount of developer, when the
An

A predetermined developing bias (developing voltage) is applied to the developing
In this embodiment, an example is described in which a magnetic one-component developer (toner) is charged to a negative polarity and the toner is developed into an electrostatic latent image, but a non-magnetic developer or a two-component developer may also be used. Also, the toner may be charged to a positive polarity instead of a negative polarity and developed.
(Developer amount detection means)
Next, a detection device 130 (developer amount detection device) of an electrostatic capacitance detection type as detection means (developer amount detection means) for detecting the amount of developer in this embodiment will be described.
The
In this embodiment, the developing
When an AC voltage (AC bias) is applied to the developing
In addition, the
Figure 4 is a graph showing the relationship between the toner weight and capacitance in the
In this embodiment, the remaining toner amount was detected using electrostatic remaining detection table A (Table 1) stored in electrical storage device M. Electrostatic remaining detection table A is a table showing the relationship between the electrostatic capacitance detected by the developer amount detection means and the remaining toner amount display that the image forming device displays to notify the user. Here, the remaining toner amount display of the image forming device shows the percentage of remaining toner when the initial filling amount of 360 g filled in the storage section is taken as 100%.
In this embodiment, the target toner remaining amount for a newly shipped cartridge is 30 g. The target amount is the value at which 0% is displayed to the user when the weight is detected. Here, the target amount is 30 g, which is the value at which the printed image appears blank. In a measurement performed in advance, the capacitance when 30 g of toner remains is 2.8 pF. For this reason, the electrostatic remaining inspection table A is set so that the toner remaining amount display is 0% when a capacitance of 2.8 pF is detected. By using this electrostatic remaining inspection table A, the image display device can successively inform the user of the remaining toner amount.
EEPROM(Electrically
Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory)を使用した。
(Electrical storage device)
Next, the electrical storage device M provided in the developing device of the cartridge will be described. In this embodiment, the electrical storage device M is an EEPROM (Electrically Programmable Read Only Memory).
As shown in Fig. 5, the electrical storage device M stores the manufacturing date of the process cartridge, the serial number, the print page count, the remaining amount of toner, and various data related to process control for maintaining a good output image. This information is shipped with the initial values stored when the
These data are stored in various information storage areas. As shown in FIG. 6, each information storage area has an "attribute" as a type of information, and whether the information can be rewritten is determined. First, the "ReadOnly attribute area" is an area with an attribute that allows only reading out the stored information and does not allow the information to be rewritten later. In this embodiment, it is an area that stores information stored at the time of manufacturing the cartridge, and stores the production date and serial number. Next, the "OneWay attribute area" is an area where the stored information can only be rewritten in the decreasing direction. In this embodiment, it is an area that stores the usage information of the process parts, and stores information on the remaining amount of toner that can be printed. And the "Read/Write attribute area" is an area where the information can be rewritten without restrictions on the direction of increase and decrease. In this embodiment, it stores the remaining amount of toner when the electrical storage device M is reused. Finally, the "WriteOnce attribute area" is an area with an attribute that allows the information once stored to not be rewritten. In this embodiment, it is an area that stores recycling information of the electrical storage device, and identification information is written when the reset process described later is performed.
(Information stored on an electrical storage device)
The present invention assumes a case where the
When creating a new shipping cartridge (creating a new cartridge), the "recycle identification information" in the "WriteOnly attribute area" of the electrical storage device M is set to "no information (null)". Furthermore, "electrostatic residual inspection table A" is stored in the "ReadOnly attribute area A", and "electrostatic residual inspection table B" is stored in the "ReadOnly attribute area B". Here, "electrostatic residual inspection table A" is an electrostatic residual inspection table assuming a newly shipped cartridge. On the other hand, "electrostatic residual inspection table B" is an electrostatic residual inspection table assuming a recycled cartridge. The recycling method here is a method in which the
On the other hand, when creating a cartridge for recycling (recycling a used cartridge), in order to record that recycling has been performed, "Recycle identification information present" is stored in the "WriteOnly attribute area" of the electrical storage device M. Furthermore, no changes are made to the "Electrostatic residual inspection table A" and "Electrostatic residual inspection table B" stored in the "ReadOnly attribute area A" and "ReadOnly attribute area B".
(Comparative Example Assumed from the Prior Art)
The inventor of the present application came up with the idea that when recycling a developing
Figure 15(a) shows the state before disassembly of the developing
Next, as shown in FIG. 16(a), with the inside of the
ここで、現像枠体40の第一部分40aおよび第二部分40bには、静電容量を測定するための極板A(現像剤担持体としての現像スリーブ41)及び極板B(静電容量検出部材としてのアンテナ部材43)が、それぞれ取り付けられている。
Here, the
In addition, in the process of attaching the
The inventors of the present application therefore came up with the idea of preventing a decline in detection accuracy by switching the electrostatic remaining toner detection table used to detect the remaining toner amount depending on the presence or absence of "recycling identification information," and will explain this with reference to the flow chart below.
(Cartridge operation flow)
A new cartridge or a recycled cartridge shipped from a cartridge factory is inserted into an image forming apparatus by a user and used for image forming operations. Hereinafter, how a new cartridge and a recycled cartridge each operate in an image forming apparatus will be described with reference to the flow chart of FIG.

The "recycle identification information" stored in the "iteOnce attribute area" is obtained (step S101), and it is determined whether or not the "recycle identification information" is present (step S102).

On the other hand, if "recycle identification information exists" in step S102, this indicates that the recycling process has been performed (the
According to the above flow, even if the recycling process is performed with the electrical storage device M still attached, and the developing
(Evaluation Experiment 1)
Next, an evaluation experiment of this embodiment will be described. In
After preparing such a recycled cartridge in which the distance between the electrodes is greater than that of a new cartridge, a printing operation was performed on 10,000 sheets of recording material using an image forming apparatus. In this printing operation, an E character image with a printing rate of 5% was used as the image data. The toner filling amount was 360 g, the same as that of a new cartridge.
Comparative Example 1 is an example in which the electrical storage device M that is still installed in the newly shipped cartridge is used to detect the amount of toner remaining in the recycled cartridge. In this case, "No recycle identification information" is selected in step S102 of the flow in FIG. 7, and the "Electrostatic remaining detection table A" shown in Table 2 is referenced.
In Comparative Example 1, after the toner remaining display of the image forming device showed 0% (toner remaining amount was 50 g), about 600 sheets could be printed out before the printouts started to blank out due to toner depletion. On the other hand, in Example 1, after the toner remaining display of the image forming device showed 0% (toner remaining amount was 33 g), about 100 sheets were printed out before the printouts started to blank out. This result shows that in the case of Comparative Example 1, in which a new toner remaining inspection table was used for a recycled cartridge, users who saw the display showing 0% remaining will replace the cartridge, even though a sufficient number of sheets can still be printed.
The reasons for the above evaluation results will be explained below with reference to graphs of Figures 9(a) and 9(b) showing the relationship between remaining toner amount and capacitance. In the figure, the horizontal axis is the actually measured remaining toner amount, and the vertical axis is the detected capacitance. The solid line shows the relationship between remaining toner amount and capacitance in a newly shipped cartridge, and the dashed line shows the relationship between remaining toner amount and detected capacitance in a recycled cartridge. Furthermore, C0 is the capacitance detected when the remaining toner amount is displayed as 0%. When the capacitance reaches C0, the user is notified that the toner is out.
As mentioned above, if the space between the electrodes is filled with developer, the capacitance increases, and as the developer decreases, the percentage of the space between the electrodes occupied by air increases, and the capacitance decreases. As a result of recycling increasing the distance between the developing
The arrows in FIG. 9(a) show how the remaining toner amount is calculated from the obtained capacitance in Comparative Example 1. In Comparative Example 1, the remaining amount is displayed by referring to the "electrostatic remaining inspection table A" for new products, so when the electrostatic capacitance of 2.8 pF is detected, 0% remaining toner (target toner remaining amount of 30 g) is displayed. However, since the actual cartridge is a recycled product, as shown by the dashed line in FIG. 9(a), when the electrostatic capacitance of 2.8 pF is detected, the remaining toner amount is 50 g. In other words, even though the remaining amount is displayed to the user as 0%, in reality, 50 g of toner remains, which is more than the target value of 30 g when the remaining amount is 0%. In this way, when the electrostatic remaining inspection table for new products is used for recycled products, the difference between the electrostatic capacitance and the remaining toner amount cannot be sufficiently corrected.
In contrast, the arrows in FIG. 9(b) show how the remaining toner amount is calculated from the obtained capacitance in Example 1. In Example 1, the remaining amount is displayed by referring to the "electrostatic remaining amount detection table B" for recycled products, so when a capacitance of 2.6 pF is detected, 0% remaining toner (target remaining toner amount of 30 g) is displayed. In other words, when 0% remaining is displayed to the user, the weight of remaining toner is 30 g, which is the same as the target value. In this way, according to this embodiment, the discrepancy between the capacitance and remaining toner amount is corrected, making it possible to display the remaining amount with little error and high accuracy.
Therefore, even if the cartridge is recycled (the toner seal member is regenerated) at a recycling factory and the electrical storage device attached to the cartridge is reused, an electrostatic remaining inspection table corresponding to the recycled cartridge can be used, and the remaining toner amount can be detected with high accuracy.
The recycling process carried out in the recycling factory of the present invention is not limited to the reattachment of the toner seal member described in Example 1, but may also include, for example, the replacement or addition of parts associated with the recycling of cartridges.
[実施例2}
[Example 2]
In the second embodiment, an example in which the present invention is applied to a recycled cartridge different from that in the first embodiment will be described. The same components as those in the first embodiment will be given the same reference numerals, and the description will be omitted. When using the recycled cartridge of this embodiment shown in FIG. 10, after the toner seal is released, another member (here, a
The method of recycling the
In this embodiment, when a new cartridge is produced, the
When a new cartridge is first used, the stirring member rotates and drives, and at the same time, the heat-welded portion of the container inside the
(Cartridge operation flow)
Newly shipped cartridges or recycled cartridges shipped from a cartridge factory are inserted into an image forming apparatus by a user and used for image forming operations. How newly shipped cartridges and recycled cartridges operate in an image forming apparatus will be described below with reference to the flow diagram of FIG. 11. The operations of steps S100 to S102 are the same as those in the first embodiment. In the case of a newly shipped cartridge (S102=Yes), the amount of remaining toner is obtained and updated using electrostatic remaining inspection table A as in the first embodiment (steps S103 to S107).
On the other hand, in the case of a recycled cartridge (S102=No), the
(Evaluation Experiment 2)
In the
After preparing such a cartridge with the
In Comparative Example 2, the toner remaining amount detection display showed a blank when it was 7%, and printing was no longer possible before the toner remaining amount display on the image forming device reached 0%. On the other hand, in Example 2, after the toner remaining amount display on the image forming device showed 0% (32 g of toner remaining), blank images appeared after about 50 sheets were printed. This result shows that in the case of Comparative Example 2, in which a new toner remaining amount inspection table was used for a recycled cartridge, the remaining amount did not show 0% even though the display was already blank, resulting in blank images.
The reasons for the above evaluation results will be explained below using graphs of the relationship between remaining toner amount and capacitance, shown in Figures 12(a) and 12(b). In the cartridge of this embodiment, the
The arrows in FIG. 12(a) show how the remaining toner amount is calculated from the capacitance obtained in Comparative Example 2. In Comparative Example 2, the remaining amount is displayed by referring to the "electrostatic remaining inspection table A" for new products, so when the capacitance of 2.8 pF is detected, 0% remaining toner (target remaining toner amount of 30 g) is displayed. However, since the actual cartridge is a recycled product, as shown by the dashed line in FIG. 12(a), when the capacitance of 2.8 pF is detected, the remaining toner amount is 10 g. In other words, even though the remaining amount is displayed to the user as 0%, in reality, only 10 g of toner remains, which is less than the target value of 30 g when the remaining amount is 0%. In this way, when the electrostatic remaining inspection table for new products is used for recycled products, the difference between the capacitance and the remaining toner amount cannot be sufficiently corrected.
In contrast, the arrows in FIG. 13(b) show how the remaining toner amount is calculated from the obtained capacitance in Example 2. In Example 2, the remaining amount is displayed by referring to the "electrostatic remaining amount detection table C" for recycled products, so when a capacitance of 3.0 pF is detected, 0% remaining toner (target remaining toner amount of 30 g) is displayed. In other words, when the remaining amount is displayed to the user as 0%, the weight of the remaining toner is the same as the target value, 30 g. In this way, according to this embodiment, the increase in capacitance due to the
Therefore, even if the cartridge is recycled (the toner seal member is regenerated) at a recycling factory and the electrical storage device attached to the cartridge is reused, an electrostatic remaining inspection table corresponding to the recycled cartridge can be used, and the remaining toner amount can be detected with high accuracy.
Note that there are cases where a cartridge is recycled using a method selected from a number of recycling methods. For example, recycling factory A may use the method of Example 1, while recycling factory B may use the method of Example 2. In such a case, it is advisable to store information that identifies the recycling method in the electrical storage device M, and to use a table corresponding to the recycling method when using the cartridge. Specifically, in addition to storing "recycling identification information present" in the "WriteOnce attribute area" of the electrical storage device M at the recycling factory, the "recycling method" may also be stored in the "Read/Write attribute area". In that case, both electrostatic residual inspection tables B and C are stored in the "ReadOnly attribute area" of the electrical storage device M, and a table is selected according to the recycling method when the cartridge is attached, etc.
In the above first and second embodiments, one of the electrodes used for capacitance detection is the developing
As described above, in each embodiment of the present invention, an electrostatic residual inspection table is stored in the electrical storage device M as correspondence information representing the correspondence between the detected electrostatic capacitance value and the toner amount, and this electrostatic residual inspection table is referenced when detecting the toner remaining amount. For example, if the correspondence information used when the cartridge is new is the first correspondence information, and the correspondence information used when the cartridge is a recycled product is the second correspondence information, the electrostatic residual inspection table A is the first correspondence information (first table), and the electrostatic residual inspection table B and the electrostatic residual inspection table C are the second correspondence information (second table). Note that in the above embodiments, the toner remaining amount is detected using a table as the correspondence information, but the correspondence information is not limited to a table as long as the relationship between the electrostatic capacitance and the toner amount can be obtained by correlating them. For example, the toner remaining amount may be calculated using a formula stored in the electrical storage device. That is, the electrical storage device as a storage means stores correspondence information representing the correspondence between the electrostatic capacitance and the toner remaining amount, and the correspondence information may include the first correspondence information used when the cartridge is new and the second correspondence information used when the cartridge is a recycled product. There may also be a plurality of second correspondence information according to the recycling method.
