Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to optical imaging systems.
In recent years, the application of aerial image display technology for displaying images in the air has been studied in various industrial fields, and floating displays are particularly expected. An aerial imaging method is known as such an aerial image display technology, and for example, first and second light beams are formed by arranging a large number of band-shaped planar light reflecting portions at a constant pitch perpendicular to one surface. An optical imaging device has been proposed that includes a control panel and has first and second light control panels facing each other so that their planar light reflecting portions are perpendicular to each other (for example, Patent Document 1). In such an optical imaging device, the incident light that has entered the first and second light control panels is retransmitted and forms a real image in the air. However, when the optical imaging device described in

(Definition of terms and symbols)
Definitions of terms and symbols used herein are as follows.
(1) Refractive index (nx, ny, nz)
"nx" is the refractive index in the direction in which the in-plane refractive index is maximum (i.e., slow axis direction), and "ny" is the direction perpendicular to the slow axis in the plane (i.e., fast axis direction) "nz" is the refractive index in the thickness direction.
(2) In-plane phase difference (Re)
"Re(λ)" is an in-plane retardation measured with light having a wavelength of λnm at 23°C. For example, "Re(550)" is an in-plane retardation measured with light having a wavelength of 550 nm at 23°C. Re(λ) is determined by the formula: Re(λ)=(nx−ny)×d, where d (nm) is the thickness of the layer (film).
(3) Angle When an angle is referred to in this specification, the angle includes both clockwise and counterclockwise directions with respect to the reference direction. Therefore, for example, "45°" means ±45°.
(4) Substantially orthogonal or parallel In this specification, the expressions "substantially orthogonal" and "substantially orthogonal" include cases where the angle between two directions is 90°±7°, preferably 90° °±5°, more preferably 90°±3°. The expressions "substantially parallel" and "substantially parallel" include cases where the angle between two directions is 0°±7°, preferably 0°±5°, and more preferably 0°±5°. It is 3°. Further, in this specification, the term "orthogonal" or "parallel" may include substantially orthogonal or substantially parallel states.
A. Overview of Optical Imaging System FIG. 1 is a schematic block diagram illustrating an optical imaging system according to one embodiment of the invention. The illustrated
In a bright place where the light source illuminates the space in which the aerial imaging device is placed, the light from the light source may enter the interior of the aerial imaging device. In this case, the visibility of the aerial image formed by the aerial imaging device may be reduced due to diffuse reflection of external light that has entered the interior of the aerial imaging device. On the other hand, according to one embodiment of the present invention, since the first transmission axis direction of the first polarizer and the second transmission axis direction of the second polarizer intersect, the first polarizer The transmitted linearly polarized light is blocked by the second polarizer. Therefore, it is possible to suppress light from the light source from entering the inside of the aerial imaging device. As a result, the optical imaging system can form an aerial image with excellent visibility even in a bright place illuminated by a light source.

The angle between the first transmission axis direction X of the first polarizer and the second transmission axis direction Y of the second polarizer is, for example, 60° or more, preferably 70° or more, and more preferably 80° or more (Fig. 5). Particularly preferably, the first transmission axis direction and the second transmission axis direction are substantially orthogonal. If the first transmission axis direction and the second transmission axis direction intersect in this way, it is possible to further suppress external light from entering the inside of the aerial imaging device.

The absorptive polarizer, protective layer, and reflective polarizer will be explained in more detail below.

Examples include those that have been dyed and stretched with a dichroic substance such as iodine or dichroic dye, and polyene-based oriented films such as dehydrated PVA and dehydrochloric acid treated polyvinyl chloride. Preferably, an absorption type polarizer obtained by dyeing a PVA film with iodine and uniaxially stretching is used because it has excellent optical properties.
The above-mentioned staining with iodine is performed, for example, by immersing the PVA film in an iodine aqueous solution. The stretching ratio of the above-mentioned uniaxial stretching is preferably 3 to 7 times. Stretching may be carried out after the dyeing process or may be carried out while dyeing. Alternatively, it may be dyed after being stretched. If necessary, the PVA film is subjected to swelling treatment, crosslinking treatment, washing treatment, drying treatment, etc. For example, by soaking the PVA film in water and washing it with water before dyeing, you can not only wash dirt and anti-blocking agents from the surface of the PVA film, but also swell the PVA film and prevent uneven dyeing. It can be prevented.
Specific examples of absorption type polarizers obtained using a laminate include a laminate of a resin base material and a PVA resin layer (PVA resin film) laminated on the resin base material, or a laminate of a resin base material and a PVA resin layer (PVA resin film) laminated on the resin base material. Examples include polarizers obtained using a laminate with a PVA-based resin layer coated on the resin base material. A polarizer obtained using a laminate of a resin base material and a PVA-based resin layer coated on the resin base material can be obtained by, for example, applying a PVA-based resin solution to the resin base material and drying it. By forming a PVA-based resin layer thereon to obtain a laminate of the resin base material and the PVA-based resin layer; stretching and dyeing the laminate to make the PVA-based resin layer an absorption type polarizer; can be made. In one embodiment of the present invention, preferably, a polyvinyl alcohol resin layer containing a halide and a polyvinyl alcohol resin is formed on one side of the resin base material. Stretching typically includes immersing the laminate in an aqueous boric acid solution and stretching. Furthermore, the stretching may further include stretching the laminate in air at a high temperature (for example, 95° C. or higher) before stretching in the boric acid aqueous solution, if necessary. In addition, in one embodiment of the present invention, the laminate is preferably subjected to a drying shrinkage treatment in which the laminate is heated while being conveyed in the longitudinal direction to shrink by 2% or more in the width direction. Typically, the manufacturing method of this embodiment includes subjecting the laminate to an in-air auxiliary stretching process, a dyeing process, an underwater stretching process, and a drying shrinkage process in this order. By introducing auxiliary stretching, even when PVA is applied onto a thermoplastic resin, it becomes possible to improve the crystallinity of PVA and achieve high optical properties. At the same time, by increasing the orientation of PVA in advance, it is possible to prevent problems such as deterioration of orientation and dissolution of PVA when it is immersed in water during the subsequent dyeing and stretching processes, resulting in high optical properties. becomes possible to achieve. Furthermore, when the PVA-based resin layer is immersed in a liquid, disturbance in the orientation of polyvinyl alcohol molecules and deterioration of orientation can be suppressed compared to when the PVA-based resin layer does not contain a halide. This can improve the optical properties of a polarizer obtained through a treatment process performed by immersing the laminate in a liquid, such as dyeing treatment and underwater stretching treatment. Furthermore, optical properties can be improved by shrinking the laminate in the width direction by drying shrinkage treatment. The obtained resin base material/absorption polarizer laminate may be used as is (that is, the resin base material may be used as a protective layer for the polarizer), or the resin base material/absorption polarizer laminate may be used as is. The base material may be peeled off, and any suitable protective layer depending on the purpose may be laminated on the peeled surface. Details of the method for manufacturing such an absorption polarizer are described in, for example, Japanese Patent Application Publication No. 2012-73580 and Japanese Patent No. 6470455. The entire descriptions of these publications are incorporated herein by reference.

In another embodiment, the absorptive polarizer is configured as a coating layer laminated to the protective layer.
The coating film is typically a solidified or hardened layer of aligned lyotropic liquid crystal. As used herein, the term "lyotropic liquid crystal" refers to a liquid crystal that undergoes a phase transition between an isotropic phase and a liquid crystal phase by changing the temperature or the concentration of a solute (liquid crystal compound). It can be produced by
The thickness of a polarizer made of such a coating film is, for example, 0.1 μm to 20 μm. In particular, when the polarizer is a solidified layer or a hardened layer of lyotropic liquid crystal, the polarizer can be made thinner because it has excellent absorption dichroism. The thickness of the solidified layer or hardened layer of the lyotropic liquid crystal is preferably 0.1 μm to 10 μm, more preferably 5 μm or less, and even more preferably 1 μm or less.

C. Protective Layer The protective layer is bonded to at least one surface of the absorption polarizer, for example, via any suitable adhesive layer (not shown).
The protective layer is formed of any suitable film that can be used as a protective layer of a polarizer. Specific examples of materials that are the main components of the film include cycloolefin (COP) systems such as polynorbornene systems, polyester systems such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) systems, cellulose resins such as triacetylcellulose (TAC), and polycarbonate. Examples include transparent resins such as (PC), (meth)acrylic, polyvinyl alcohol, polyamide, polyimide, polyethersulfone, polysulfone, polystyrene, polyolefin, and acetate. Other examples include thermosetting resins such as (meth)acrylic, urethane, (meth)acrylic urethane, epoxy, and silicone resins, and ultraviolet curable resins. Note that "(meth)acrylic resin" refers to acrylic resin and/or methacrylic resin. Other examples include glassy polymers such as siloxane polymers. Furthermore, the polymer film described in JP-A-2001-343529 (WO01/37007) can also be used. Materials for this film include, for example, a resin composition containing a thermoplastic resin having a substituted or unsubstituted imide group in its side chain, and a thermoplastic resin having a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group and nitrile group in its side chain. For example, a resin composition containing an alternating copolymer of isobutene and N-methylmaleimide and an acrylonitrile/styrene copolymer can be used. The polymer film may be, for example, an extrusion molded product of the resin composition. The materials for the resin film can be used alone or in combination. Among the resin films, (meth)acrylic resins and cycloolefin resins are preferred.
The thickness of the protective layer is typically 5 mm or less, preferably 1 mm or less, more preferably 1 μm to 500 μm, and still more preferably 5 μm to 150 μm.
D. Reflective Polarizer A reflective polarizer is typically composed of a film having a multilayer structure (sometimes referred to as a reflective polarizing film). The multilayer structure has alternating layers A with birefringence and layers B with substantially no birefringence. The total number of layers making up the multilayer structure may be between 50 and 1000. For example, the refractive index nx in the x-axis direction of the A layer is larger than the refractive index ny in the y-axis direction, and the refractive index nx in the x-axis direction and the refractive index ny in the y-axis direction of the B layer are substantially the same, The refractive index difference between layer A and layer B is large in the x-axis direction and substantially zero in the y-axis direction. As a result, the x-axis direction can become the reflection axis, and the y-axis direction can become the transmission axis. The refractive index difference between layer A and layer B in the x-axis direction is preferably 0.2 to 0.3.
The layer A is typically made of a material that exhibits birefringence when stretched. Such materials include, for example, naphthalene dicarboxylic acid polyesters (eg, polyethylene naphthalate), polycarbonates, and acrylic resins (eg, polymethyl methacrylate). The B layer is typically made of a material that does not substantially exhibit birefringence even when stretched. Examples of such materials include copolyesters of naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and terephthalic acid. The multilayer structure may be formed by a combination of coextrusion and stretching. For example, after extruding the material constituting layer A and the material constituting layer B, they are multilayered (for example, using a multiplier). The obtained multilayer laminate is then stretched. The x-axis direction in the illustrated example may correspond to the stretching direction.

The thickness of the reflective polarizer is, for example, 10 μm to 150 μm, preferably 20 μm to 100 μm, and more preferably 30 μm to 60 μm.
The cross transmittance (Tc) of the reflective polarizer (reflective polarizing film) may be, for example, 0.01% to 3%. The single transmittance (Ts) of the reflective polarizer (reflective polarizing film) is, for example, 43% to 49%, preferably 45.0% to 47.0%. The degree of polarization (P) of the reflective polarizer (reflective polarizing film) is, for example, 92.0% or more, preferably 99.0% or more, and, for example, 99.99% or less.
EXAMPLES Hereinafter, the present invention will be specifically explained with reference to Examples, but the present invention is not limited to these Examples. The method for measuring each characteristic is as follows.
(1) Measurement of white brightness, black brightness, and contrast In the optical imaging systems of Examples and Comparative Examples, a white image and a black image were slid and displayed on the image display panel to form aerial images thereof. The brightness of each aerial image was measured using a brightness meter (manufactured by TOPCON, SR-5000) placed at a polar angle of 0° and an azimuth angle of 0°. In addition, the ratio (contrast; white brightness/black brightness) of the brightness of the white aerial image (white brightness) to the brightness of the black aerial image (black brightness) was calculated. Furthermore, the contrast ratio between the example and the comparative example (contrast of the example/contrast of the comparative example) having the same polar angle and azimuth angle was calculated as an improvement effect. Tables 1 to 3 show black luminance, white luminance, contrast, and improvement effects.

[Preparation example 1]
1. Preparation of absorption type polarizing plate A long amorphous isophthalic polyethylene terephthalate film (thickness: 100 μm) with a Tg of about 75°C was used as the thermoplastic resin base material, and on one side of the resin base material, Corona treatment was applied.
100 parts by mass of a PVA resin prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol (degree of polymerization 4200, degree of saponification 99.2 mol%) and acetoacetyl-modified PVA (manufactured by Nippon Gosei Kagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd., trade name "Gosefaimer") at a ratio of 9:1. to which 13 parts by mass of potassium iodide was added was dissolved in water to prepare a PVA aqueous solution (coating solution).
The PVA aqueous solution was applied to the corona-treated surface of the resin base material and dried at 60° C. to form a PVA-based resin layer with a thickness of 13 μm, thereby producing a laminate.
The obtained laminate was uniaxially stretched 2.4 times in the vertical direction (longitudinal direction) in an oven at 130° C. (in-air auxiliary stretching treatment).
Next, the laminate was immersed for 30 seconds in an insolubilization bath (boric acid aqueous solution obtained by blending 4 parts by mass of boric acid with 100 parts by mass of water) at a liquid temperature of 40° C. (insolubilization treatment).
Next, the final polarizer was added to a dyeing bath (an iodine aqueous solution obtained by blending iodine and potassium iodide at a weight ratio of 1:7 to 100 parts by mass of water) at a liquid temperature of 30°C. The sample was immersed for 60 seconds while adjusting the concentration so that the single transmittance (Ts) became a desired value (staining treatment).
Next, it was immersed in a crosslinking bath (boric acid aqueous solution obtained by blending 3 parts by mass of potassium iodide and 5 parts by mass of boric acid with 100 parts by mass of water) at a liquid temperature of 40 °C for 30 seconds. (Crosslinking treatment).
Thereafter, while immersing the laminate in a boric acid aqueous solution (boric acid concentration: 4% by weight, potassium iodide concentration: 5% by weight) at a liquid temperature of 70°C, the laminate was completely rolled in the longitudinal direction (longitudinal direction) between rolls having different circumferential speeds. Uniaxial stretching was performed so that the stretching ratio was 5.5 times (underwater stretching treatment).
Thereafter, the laminate was immersed in a cleaning bath (an aqueous solution obtained by blending 4 parts by mass of potassium iodide with 100 parts by mass of water) at a liquid temperature of 20° C. (cleaning treatment).
Thereafter, while drying in an oven kept at about 90°C, it was brought into contact with a SUS heating roll whose surface temperature was kept at about 75°C (drying shrinkage treatment).
In this way, a polarizer with a thickness of about 5 μm was formed on the resin base material, and a laminate having a resin base material/absorption type polarizer configuration was obtained.
An HC-TAC film (thickness: 20 μm) was attached as a protective layer to the absorption polarizer surface (the surface opposite to the resin base material) of the obtained laminate. Next, the resin base material was peeled off to obtain an absorption type polarizing plate having a structure of protective layer/absorption type polarizer/.

Note that the retroreflective member includes a retroreflective sheet and a λ/4 plate. Next, the monitor, reflective polarizer, and retroreflective member were arranged in a substantially triangular shape when viewed from the side, as shown in FIG. 4, to create a retroreflective imaging device.
The angle between the image display panel and the reflective polarizer was 45°, and the angle between the retroreflective sheet and the reflective polarizer was 45°.
In addition, a light source (manufactured by Sofirn, LED lighting) was prepared. Next, the absorption type polarizing plate (first polarizing plate) obtained in Preparation Example 1 is placed on the light exit surface of the light source so that the first transmission axis direction of the first polarizer and the second transmission axis direction of the second polarizer are aligned. They were attached so that the angles formed were as shown in Table 1.
Next, the light sources were arranged so that the polar angle θ 1 and the azimuth angle θ 2 had the values shown in Table 1. The illuminance on the reflective polarizer was 200 lx, and the length of the virtual line segment connecting the center of the aerial image and the center of the light exit surface of the light source was 50 cm.
Through the above steps, an optical imaging system including a retroreflective imaging device was obtained.
