The present invention relates to a method for separating neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) by complex formation and crystallization, and particularly to a method for separating dysprosium with high purity.
Neodymium magnets, the strongest of all permanent magnets and can be manufactured in large quantities, are used as core and essential materials in high-tech products and the implementation of green energy technologies such as wind turbines and electric vehicles. Neodymium magnets contain neodymium, which is a relatively abundant resource, and dysprosium, which is rare, to increase coercive force. In recent years, while the widespread use of neodymium magnets in the industrial field has increased, the countries that produce dysprosium are unevenly distributed, raising concerns about supply risks. Therefore, if a technology can be developed to easily and highly selectively separate and recover dysprosium contained in neodymium magnet scrap, it is expected to avoid the supply risk of dysprosium and contribute to a stable supply.
Currently, there are two ways to collect and recycle the dysprosium contained in used neodymium magnets: one is to recycle the neodymium and dysprosium as a mixture without separating the two, and the other is to separate the neodymium and dysprosium and then use their respective metal salts. A method of recycling neodymium as a raw material in the neodymium magnet manufacturing process is being considered. However, a process for recovering neodymium magnets from used electronic products and then separating and recovering the dysprosium contained in the neodymium magnets for recycling has not yet been established. We are at the stage where we need to consider ways to separate and recover the dysprosium contained in neodymium magnets and recycle them, taking into consideration not only technical ease but also economical aspects and environmental impact.
Both neodymium and dysprosium are elements belonging to the lanthanide series. Lanthanides tend to assume a trivalent valence in solution, and the f orbital, which is filled with electrons as the atomic number increases, is shielded and does not participate in chemical bonding. Therefore, the chemical properties of the lanthanides are similar, and it is difficult to separate the coexisting lanthanides by a simple method. For example, in the fractional crystallization method that separates lanthanides by utilizing the difference in solubility of lanthanide metal salts, it is necessary to repeat the cycle of crystal formation and dissolution because the difference in solubility of lanthanide metal salts is small. In addition, the solvent extraction method, which is another typical separation method for lanthanides, utilizes the difference in the complex formation constant between the extractant and the lanthanide. Due to the small difference in production constants, it is necessary to design a multi-step separation process. As described above, the method of separating lanthanides from coexisting lanthanides that has already been put into practical use requires a multi-step separation procedure.
As a separation method different from the above-described fractional crystallization method and solvent extraction method, a method for separating lanthanides based on crystallization of a lanthanide complex has recently been reported. For example, in Patent Document 1, an amine is coordinated to a lanthanide, and the complex is reacted with salicylaldehyde to form a complex, and by utilizing the difference in solubility of these crystals, only one of two types of lanthanides is crystallized. Discloses a method for converting In addition, Zhao et al. reported that only one of two types of lanthanides can be crystallized based on the fact that coordination polymers with different structures are generated depending on the ionic radius of the lanthanides (Non-patent Document 1). . However, these documents not only do not consider mutual separation of neodymium and dysprosium, but also do not indicate evaluation indicators for separation methods such as crystallization yield and separation coefficient.
Regarding mutual separation of neodymium and dysprosium, Patent Document 2 discloses that from a mixed solution of neodymium ions (Nd 3+ ) and dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) using di-2-ethylhexyl phosphate ester as a ligand, A method for selectively precipitating Dy 3+ as a coordination polymer is disclosed. In addition, Schelter et al. have developed a method in which Dy 3+ is selectively crystallized as a complex from a mixed solution of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ using tris(2-tert-butylhydroxylaminato)benzylamine as a ligand. reported (Non-Patent Document 2). Furthermore, Yin et al. reported a method for selectively crystallizing Dy 3+ as a complex from a mixed solution of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ using a specific borate as a ligand (non-patent Reference 3). These documents disclose a one-step separation method for mutually separating neodymium and dysprosium, and the purity of the separated dysprosium is considered to be 90% or more. However, in the method described in Patent Document 2, the reaction cannot help but be stoichiometrically unstable, and in the method described in Non-Patent Document 3, heating at 200°C for 3 days is required. However, from an economic point of view and an environmental burden, this method of separating and recovering dysprosium contained in neodymium magnets was not necessarily satisfactory.
As mentioned above, regarding the mutual separation of neodymium and dysprosium, although a one-step method is known in which a specific compound is used as a ligand and dysprosium ions are selectively precipitated as a coordination polymer, the resulting dysprosium Regarding dysprosium, a method for separating and recovering dysprosium that is not necessarily satisfactory has not been obtained not only from the viewpoint of its purity but also from the viewpoint of economics, stoichiometric stability, and environmental impact.
In view of the current situation, the present invention aims to provide a method for easily and selectively separating and recovering highly pure dysprosium from a solution containing a mixture of neodymium ions and dysprosium ions, which are difficult to separate easily. That is.
As a result of extensive research to achieve the above object, the present inventors found that tris[2-(5-methylsalicylideneimino)ethyl]amine (hereinafter referred to as "H 3 L") shown in FIG. It has been found that the above object can be achieved by using as a ligand. Furthermore, by evaluating the solubility and stability constant of the complex of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ , separation conditions for precipitating the Dy 3+ complex as a crystal in one step were determined. When the purity of Dy 3+ contained in the crystal was evaluated, the purity of dysprosium under optimal conditions was 99% or more, indicating high selectivity compared to the conventional technology.

The mixed solvent of an aprotic polar solvent and a protic polar solvent used in the present invention is an aprotic polar solvent and a protic polar solvent selected from the viewpoints of ease of handling, high boiling point, and non-carcinogenicity. It is obtained by mixing with a polar solvent, and the mixed solvent preferably has a small solubility of the dysprosium complex and a large difference between the solubility of the neodymium complex and the solubility of the dysprosium complex. The aprotic polar solvent is not particularly limited, but a solvent with a high dielectric constant is preferable, and examples thereof include dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylformamide. Dimethyl sulfoxide is preferred from the viewpoint of ease of handling. Further, examples of the protic polar solvent include, but are not particularly limited to, lower alcohols such as ethanol and isopropanol.
Regarding the mixing ratio of the aprotic polar solvent and the protic polar solvent in the mixed solvent, the mixing ratio is preferably such that the solubility of the dysprosium complex is small and the difference between the solubility of the neodymium complex and the solubility of the dysprosium complex is large. For example, in the case of a mixed solvent using dimethyl sulfoxide as the aprotic polar solvent and isopropanol as the protic polar solvent, the solubility of the dysprosium complex is small, and the difference between the solubility of the neodymium complex and the solubility of the dysprosium complex is large. Therefore, the volume ratio of dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol is preferably 1:3.
As the tripod-type Schiff ligand used in the present invention, for example, tris[2- (5-methylsalicylideneimino)ethyl]amine (H 3 L ) can be mentioned. The group ring may be unsubstituted, and the substituent may be substituted with a less bulky substituent such as an ethyl group or a propyl group in addition to the methyl group, and the substitution position may be other than the 5-position. may be substituted at any position.
In the present invention, the two problems are that the dysprosium complex is generated preferentially over the neodymium complex in a reaction in which acid dissociation of H 3 L and complex formation occur simultaneously, and that the solubility of the generated dysprosium complex is lower than that of the neodymium complex. The combination of these two events synergistically amplifies the separation selectivity for dysprosium. A strong base can be added to a solution in which neodymium ions, dysprosium ions, and H 3 L coexist in order to advance the complex formation reaction, and the moles of Nd 3+ , Dy 3+ , H 3 L, and the strong base By adjusting the ratio, it is possible to control the ratio of neodymium complex and dysprosium complex contained in the generated crystal. Examples of the strong base include, but are not limited to, triethylamine, tripropylamine, diisopropylethylamine, and the like, with diisopropylethylamine being particularly preferred.
In the present invention, a solution containing neodymium ions and dysprosium ions is mixed with a mixed solvent consisting of an aprotic polar solvent and a protic polar solvent, and a tripod-type Schiff ligand is added. The solution thus obtained is allowed to stand at 25° C. (room temperature) for 3 days to generate a neodymium complex and a dysprosium complex, and the complex precipitated in the mixed solvent is separated by filtration.
The present invention will be described below using Examples, but the present invention is not limited to these Examples in any way.
[Synthesis of 7-coordinated mononuclear complex]
A seven-coordinated mononuclear complex of neodymium and dysprosium (hereinafter, the seven-coordinated mononuclear complex of neodymium is referred to as "NdL", and the seven-coordinated mononuclear complex of dysprosium is referred to as "DyL") was synthesized. DyL was synthesized according to a known method (Polyhedron, 2015, 85, 76-82). Moreover, NdL was synthesized by mixing H 3 L and Nd(CF 3 SO 3 ) 3 for 5 minutes in methanol heated to 50° C., and then adding diisopropylethylamine (DIEA) as a base. Figure 2 shows the outline of the synthesized complex. In addition, the properties of the synthesized complex were evaluated in order to determine the conditions that enable separation by crystallization. The solvent used in the following experiments was dehydrated using a molecular sieve in order to suppress side reactions and ensure reproducibility.
[Preparation of mixed solvent and study of solubility]
In order to separate neodymium and dysprosium based on the crystallization of the complex formed between them and the ligand, a mixed solvent is used in which the solubility of one of NdL and DyL is small and the difference in solubility with the other complex is large. was prepared. A mixed solvent was prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an aprotic polar solvent and isopropanol (IPA) as a protic polar solvent. The results are shown in Table 1. The volume ratio of dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol in the mixed solvent was varied from 1:1 to 1:6. It was found that the solubility of DyL in the mixed solvent (sDyL) was lower than the solubility of NdL (sNdL) at any volume ratio, and it was found that DyL can be used for separation within this volume ratio range. Further, it was found that from the viewpoint of the balance between yield and purity, it is preferable to set the volume ratio of dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol in the mixed solvent to about 1:3.
Using the difference in solubility between NdL and DyL, changes in the ratio of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ incorporated into the crystal were studied. NdL and DyL were dissolved in a mixed solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol in a volume ratio of 1:3, and crystallized. When the ratio of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ in the generated crystal was measured using a scanning electron microscope and an energy dispersive X-ray elemental analyzer, it was found that ~80% of dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) were present in the crystal. It was found that ~20% neodymium ion (Nd 3+ ) was contained. It was found that the difference in solubility between NdL and DyL alone provides significant selectivity to dysprosium ions.
LnL(Lnはネオジム又はジスプロシウム)の錯体生成平衡は下記の式(1)で表される。
Furthermore, we investigated the possibility of further improving the selectivity to dysprosium ions by combining the difference in solubility of the complex with the difference in reactivity during the complex formation process. The production equilibrium of NdL and DyL in a mixed solvent with a volume ratio of dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol of 1:3 was investigated. The complex formation equilibrium of LnL (Ln is neodymium or dysprosium) is expressed by the following formula (1).
Based on the above study results, a separation experiment was conducted in which the low solubility of DyL in a mixed solvent and the ease of producing DyL function synergistically to more selectively crystallize DyL.
DIEA was added to a solution in which Nd(NO 3 ) 3 , Dy(NO 3 ) 3 , and H 3 L coexisted using a solvent in which dimethyl sulfoxide and isopropanol were mixed at a ratio of 1:3. The mixing ratios of the reagents were Nd 3+ :Dy 3+ :H 3 L:DIEA, 1:1:2:6, 1:1:2:3, and 1:1:2:2.5. The solution was allowed to stand at 25° C. for 3 days in a sealed container. The generated crystals were filtered and washed with a mixed solvent of DMSO:IPA=1:3. The recovered crystals were dried under reduced pressure overnight, dissolved in nitric acid, and the concentrations of neodymium ions (Nd 3+ ) and dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The entire amount of the filtrate and washing solution was collected, and the concentrations of neodymium ions (Nd 3+ ) and dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) contained in the solutions were determined by ICP-AES. From the values obtained from the above operations, we can determine the ratio of neodymium ions (Nd 3+ ) and dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) in the crystal, and the ratio of neodymium ions (Nd 3+ ) and dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) contained in the solution. ) was determined. Furthermore, the separation coefficient (S) was calculated using equation (4).
As shown in Table 3, in the separation experiments at all mixing ratios, the proportion of dysprosium ions (Dy 3+ ) contained in the crystal was over 96%, and the difference in solubility and the difference in the complex formation process were used in combination. It was found that the selectivity of dysprosium was significantly improved by this. The value of the separation coefficient (S) was one order of magnitude larger than the separation coefficient obtained by one-stage solvent extraction, indicating high selectivity. In particular, when Nd 3+ :Dy 3+ :H 3 L:DIEA=1:1:2:2.5, the purity of dysporosium ions (Dy 3+ ) contained in the resulting crystal is 99. It showed 8±0.1%.
Neodymium ions were successfully separated with high purity using a tripod-type Schiff ligand in a mixed solvent of an aprotic polar solvent and a protic polar solvent through one-step crystallization. We provide a lanthanide separation technology that uses readily available solvents, does not require heating, is economical, and has less environmental impact, not only for combinations of neodymium and dysprosium, but also for combinations of neodymium and other lanthanides. can.
