Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to thermoplastic polymer granules and methods of making thermoplastic polymer granules.
In the manufacture of polymers (eg, thermoplastic polymers), the process may result in powdered polymers. Further, in the recycling of polymer products, etc., the polymer may be regenerated into a powder form. Powdery polymers generally have a low bulk density and poor fluidity, and are therefore poor in handleability. In addition, there are many safety issues, such as the possibility of dust explosion and the possibility of dust explosion. Therefore, pelletized resin, that is, resin pelletized by heating and melting a powdery polymer, extruding the melted product from a die and solidifying it, is often used. However, some powdery polymers are difficult to pelletize. For example, in recent years, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) synthesized in vivo by microorganisms have attracted attention as biopolymers, but such biopolymers have a slow crystallization rate and are sometimes difficult to pelletize. Also, a resin with a high molecular weight (eg, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) has too high a melt viscosity and is difficult to pelletize. Engineering plastics and super engineering plastics such as polyphenylene ether, polycarbonate, liquid crystal polymer, polyphenylene sulfide, etc. are processed at high temperatures, and their physical properties tend to deteriorate due to pelletization due to repeated heat history. Core-shell rubber obtained by emulsion polymerization is widely used as an impact resistance modifier for various resins, but it has a problem that it cannot be thermoplasticized by itself.
The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a polymer granule obtained without melting a powdery polymer, which is excellent in handleability and safety. A disk pelleter-type granulator has, as a basic structure, one or two disks with a large number of holes of 2 mm to 30 mm and rollers for pressure-feeding raw materials into the holes of the disks. A raw material supplied between a disc and a roller or between two discs is pressed into the holes of the discs as the rollers rotate to form a cylindrical extrudate. Here, the disk hole is tapered, and in the process of passing the mixture through the hole, a compressive stress is applied from the outer periphery of the die hole. The length of this tapered hole is called the effective length. The extruded granule precursor can be cut by a cutter or the like on the back surface of the disc to obtain pellet-like thermoplastic polymer granules. The length of the granule precursor (resulting in thermoplastic polymer granules) can be adjusted by the distance between the back surface of the disc and the cutter, and the number of rotations of the roller. The distance between the disk plate and the cutter can be any appropriate distance depending on the type of powdered thermoplastic polymer. The distance between the disk plate and the cutter is, for example, 1 mm to 30 mm, more preferably 2 mm to 20 mm, still more preferably 3 mm to 10 mm.
More specifically, the disk pelleter method includes a roller/disk die method, a roller/ring die method, a double die method, a flat die method, and the like. Examples of commercially available disk pelleter type granulators include disk pelleter F series manufactured by Dalton.
Any appropriate method can be adopted as a drying method in the drying step. After the drying step, the thermoplastic polymer granules from which fine powder has been removed can be obtained by performing treatment with a vibrating sieve or the like. Any suitable drying equipment is used in the drying step. For example, a vibrating fluidized bed dryer is preferable because it can dry efficiently in a short time.
C. Melt Compounding of Thermoplastic Resin and Thermoplastic Polymer Granules In one embodiment, the thermoplastic polymer granules are provided as raw materials for thermoplastic resin compounds for their intended use. Also provided are melt compounds of the above thermoplastic polymer granules with other thermoplastic resins. Any thermoplastic resin is used as the other thermoplastic resin.
Any appropriate method can be adopted as a method for producing the molten compound. For example, kneaders, Banbury mixers, rolls, single-screw or multi-screw extruders with two or more screws can be used. Preferably a twin screw extruder is used. The composition obtained by melt-kneading is pelletized.
Examples of uses of the thermoplastic polymer granules include the following uses.
1) Use of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder granules as a resin modifier Sliding properties can be improved by blending 1 to 10% by weight of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder granules with polyamide resin or polyoxymethylene resin. It can be used as a quality agent (improving slipperiness). In this case, by adding an acid-modified polymer such as maleic anhydride polyethylene to the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder granules, it is possible to increase the dispersibility of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene in the polyamide resin. Also, by blending with a thermoplastic elastomer, it can be used as a stiffness improver, slip improver and strength improver for thermoplastic elastomers.
2) Improvement of handling properties by granulation of powdery biopolyester produced by living organisms Powdery biopolyester produced by living organisms is sometimes taken out as a powdery polymer primarily. In the method of heating and melting a powdery polymer, extruding the melted product from a die, cooling it, solidifying it, and pelletizing it, not only is the feedneck of the powdery polymer impeded productivity, but also the molten state Since the crystallization rate from empty is slow, it may be difficult to cut into pellets, or blockage of pellets may occur, which may hinder productivity. By using the thermoplastic polymer granules of the present invention, it is possible to obtain pellet-like granules excellent in handleability without being heated and melted. In this case, by adding a crystallization nucleating agent (for example, talc) to the biopolyester powder granules, it is possible to increase the crystallization speed and crystallinity of the biopolyester, thereby improving rigidity and heat resistance. In addition, productivity can be enhanced.
3) Productivity improvement by granulation of resin composition of powdery engineering plastic raw material By granulating the polymer raw material, it becomes possible to eliminate the raw material feed neck and increase the productivity of the molten compound.
4) Improving productivity in remelting processing of pulverized polymer products for recycling In reusing pellets, bulk polymers, molded products, and even recovered plastics, handling by granulating the powdered polymer obtained by pulverization processing. can enhance sexuality.

<Evaluation>
The thermoplastic polymer granules obtained in Examples 1-10 and Comparative Examples 1-2 were subjected to the following evaluations. Table 3 shows the results.
(1) Granulation property The obtained thermoplastic polymer granules were confirmed, and the granulation property was evaluated according to the following criteria.
◯: Granules with a diameter of 3 mmφ are obtained.

x: The thermoplastic polymer clogs the die, or the thermoplastic polymer has no binding property and does not form granules.
(2) Granulation rate The production rate of thermoplastic polymer granules per hour (kg/Hr) was calculated.
(3) Bulk Density The thermoplastic polymer granules after drying are naturally dropped into a 1-liter masu, filled to the brim, accurately weighed in a volume of 1 liter, and weighed to determine the thermoplastic polymer. The bulk density (unit: kg/L) of the granules was calculated.
(4)

[Comparative Example 6]
Pellets were formed by melt-kneading in the same manner as in Example 13, using a powdery acrylic acid ester (shown in A-7 in Table 2) without using the thermoplastic polymer granules (PG-9). manufactured.
In Comparative Example 6, when the powdery acrylate was supplied, bridging and classification occurred at the chute port of the extruder, and the uniformity of the composition could not be maintained, making continuous production impossible.
