FIG. 1A schematically shows an
This electro-optic region is optically transparent, formed from an amorphous π-functional material, and has a resistivity of 10 −9 ohm (Ω) or less, such as an electro-optic polymer (EO polymer). Non-linear characteristics are shown. Electrostatic unit (esu) greater than 10 -44, chromophore dipole moment and molecular hyperpolarizability-product value (Chromophore dipole moment-molecular hyperpolarizability product (mb) values) is currently habitually achieved. This has been achieved without sacrificing thermal or chemical stability. For example, the decomposition temperature of phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene (FTC) chromophore is about 325 ° C. The intermolecular electrostatic interaction maximizes the plot of EO activity reverse chromophores filling the host polymer matrix. The position of this maximum shifts to lower packing with increasing chromophore dipole moment and thus dipole moment, hyperpolarizability, product. The decay of electro-optic activity is most severe for prolate ellipsoidal chromophores and not so much for spherical chromophores. The shape and structure of the chromophore can be used to optimize electro-optic activity. The electro-optic coefficient (r33) determines the strength of the electro-optic effect of the material. The value of the electro-optic coefficient is preferably 80 pm / V or more.
Non-limiting examples of materials available for the EO polymer and electro-optic region include AJ307, AJ309, AJ404, AJLZ53, AJ-CKL1, AJCKL1, AJLS102, AJPL172 in bisphenol A polycarbonate (BPAPC), amorphous polycarbonate (APC) AJLZ53, and SEO100 (of various volume ratios). The EO polymer described above is commercially available from Soluxra, LLC, located in Seattle, Washington. As described below, the nanoparticles can be mixed with the EO polymer, thereby producing a hybrid EO polymer nanocomposite.
Se Huang et alによる "Advanced processing method to introduce and preserve dipole orientation in organic electro-optic materials for next generation photonic devices(次世代フォトニックデバイスのための有機電気光学材料における双極子配向を導入・保存するための先進的な電場処理方法)"を参照することにより、当業者には、概して、開示されたポーリング技術が認識されよう。 Organic EO polymers have chromophores with randomly distributed permanent dipole moments. In order for the EO polymer to exhibit the second-order nonlinearity required for the operation of the optical modulator, the chromophores must be polled. Poling is the process of aligning chromophores. Common polling techniques include contact polling and corona polling. Contact poling requires heating the EO polymer to near the glass transition temperature of the EO polymer while applying an electric field between the electrodes in contact with the EO polymer. This cools the EO polymer after aligning the dipoles. This electric field is generated by applying a polling voltage of about 100 volts (V) to about 1,000 volts (V). Corona poling is similar to contact poling, but differs in that an electric field is created by accumulating charge on the surface of the EO polymer by corona discharging the conductor at a high voltage. Se Huang et al's "Advanced processing method to introduce and preserve dipole orientation in organic electro-optic materials for next generation photonic devices (for introducing and preserving dipole orientation in organic electro-optic materials for next-generation photonic devices" By referring to "Advanced electric field processing methods" ", those skilled in the art will generally recognize the disclosed polling techniques. The refractive index of the EO polymer can be adjusted by introducing nanoparticles. The nanoparticles can be bound to the organic matrix of the EO polymer by ionic or covalent bonds. Alternatively, the nanoparticles can be added without binding to the organic matrix. Nanoparticles that do not rely on bonding result in faster diffusion and mixing between adjacent layers.
The
The
When alternating current flows through a circuit, the relationship between circuit element current and voltage is characterized not only by their magnitude ratio, but also by their phase difference. For the purposes of the present invention, a reference to the electrical conductivity of the dielectric or electro-optic region means the imaginary component of the complex valued permittivity, and a perfect conductor has infinite conductivity. A perfect dielectric, however, has a real-valued permittivity with zero imaginary component. In a lossy medium, the magnitude of the displacement current depends on the frequency of the applied field, and there is no displacement current in a field that does not change. At low frequencies, the contribution to energy consumption and energy storage from resistive and reactive elements is decoupled. In contrast, at high frequencies, stored electromagnetic energy partially contributes to resistance, and power consumption partially contributes to reactance. For improved electrical poling to achieve this higher r33, it is desirable to increase the electrical conductivity of the dielectric layer, thereby polarizing the chromophore in the electro-optic material. ) To reduce the half-wave voltage required. It is possible to add a chromophore to the dielectric, thereby increasing the electrical conductivity of the host dielectric material and improving the poling efficiency of the layer structure of the EO modulator.
The electrode is preferably an ink-jet printable conductive ink. Two types of suitable conductive inks are metal organic decomposition inks (MOD-inks) and more generally conductive nanocomposite inks. MOD inks are solvent based inks that contain a metal salt such as a silver salt. However, aqueous-based nanocomposite inks offer various advantages in printing thin conductive patterns without morphologies and without residual contaminants over conventional organic solvent-based MOD inks. The conductive nanocomposite ink is a suspension of metal nanoparticles such as silver and copper. This conductive nanocomposite ink is commercially available from various manufacturers. For example, silver-based nanocomposite inks are available from Novacenttrix, Austin, Texas, Cabot Corporation, Boston, Massachusetts, and Suwon, Gyeongg-do, Gyeongg-do, Korea. Available from a Samsung Electromechanics Company.
Conductive inks require a sintering process to provide continuous connectivity of conductive nanoparticles. This sintering process can include the introduction of a furnace to increase the temperature of the conductive ink. The temperature of the EO modulator must be kept below the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Preferably, the temperature of the EO modulator is maintained below 100 ° C. Various techniques can be implemented to avoid high temperatures while allowing continued connectivity of the conductive nanoparticles. Hydrochloride solutions (hydrochrorides solutions) can be used to dissolve the chemical coating on the nanoparticles. Direct local heating of the conductive ink can be achieved by direct resistive heating. The pulsed light can sinter the material via a pulsed ultraviolet xenon arc lamp, near infrared, or other radiation source.

Various techniques can be used to deposit the above-described elements of the EO modulator. Ink jet printing can be used to deposit and form the conductive ink, dielectric layer, and electro-optic polymer. Alternatively, a spin-on method or an ultraviolet imprint method can be used.
FIG. 2A shows an
The
The
After deposition of the nanocomposite ink from one of the plurality of printheads, the
FIG. 2B shows a
For these EO polymers suitable for ink jet printing, they can be held in one of the storage tanks. Alternatively, the EO polymer may be supplied using ultraviolet nanoimprinting or nanostamping techniques, resulting in features at the nanometer scale. For sufficiently small forms, nanoprinting technology is the preferred method. In nanoprinting, an appropriately sized form of an original silicon mold is produced using lithography techniques well known in the art. At that time, the flexible mold material is generated from the original silicon mold. The flexible mold has a desirable pattern for imprinting via stamping. For example, a single-mode waveguide can be imprinted into a dielectric cladding layer and then filled with an EO polymer to produce an EO modulator according to the present invention. First, layers up to the EO polymer are deposited by ink jet printing, spin-on techniques, or other known processes. The dielectric cladding layer is partially gelled by exposure to ultraviolet light. Next, a flexible mold is pressed against the gelled dielectric cladding layer. The gelled layer is sufficiently cured to take the shape of the mold. The mold is then released, leaving the imprint in the cladding layer, which is further cured while retaining the feature shape of the mold. EO polymer is then deposited to fill the imprinted features. Such techniques can make waveguide channels such as those shown in FIGS. 1A, 1B, and 1C sufficiently small to operate as single mode waveguides. Alternatively, nanostamps can be utilized to pattern the morphology in a positive or negative pattern in an optically curable photoresist or metal. The morphology can then be defined using wet chemical processing or inductively coupled plasma etching.
