Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus capable of adjusting the image quality of an image forming unit based on a reading result of an adjustment image formed on a transfer medium, an information processing apparatus capable of communicating with the image forming apparatus, and a program.
In an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine, a facsimile machine, a printer, or a multifunction machine, an image is output to a transfer medium based on image data included in a job in accordance with set image forming conditions (image forming position, color, density, etc.). The The image forming conditions may change temporarily or gradually with the operation of the image forming apparatus. For this reason, quality is maintained by various adjustment operations. Specifically, a patch image or the like is output to a transfer medium every predetermined time when the image forming apparatus is operated or every predetermined number of printed sheets, and the output image patch is detected by a color density sensor or the like to form an image properly. It is determined whether it is done. If there is a shift in image quality, etc., the image formation is adjusted by correcting tone, density unevenness, maximum density, position of each color, density shift, etc. by feedback.
For example, in
Furthermore, printing may be performed on paper larger than the output image, and unnecessary parts may be cut using a cutting machine to generate a final output product. In such paper, a patch is known that outputs a patch outside the frame of a document image (cutting margin, etc.), reads the patch with an in-line sensor, and performs image quality correction (hereinafter, real-time adjustment) in real time. In the real-time adjustment, an adjustment image such as a gradation patch is printed for each page in a margin area, and the adjustment value is calculated by reading the adjustment image with an inline sensor. Then, by applying the adjustment value to the image being printed, the image quality of the output image can be stabilized.
By the way, when a patch is formed in the margin area, the margin portion is specified by comparing the original image size and the paper size, and if there is an area for printing the gradation patch in the margin portion, printing is performed on the margin portion. If there is no area for printing gradation patches, printing is not performed.
However, for example, when a job with an odd number of pages is output by double-sided printing, if there is a white image page that is automatically added to the back side of the last page, the original image size does not exist, so there is no original image size. Becomes unknown, and the adjustment image cannot be printed on the paper.
If the printing surface of the gradation patch is fixed to either the front surface or the back surface of the paper, if you print on an odd number of jobs with double-sided printing, the gradation patch cannot be printed on the white image. The number of adjustments may be reduced.

Whether to perform printing on one side or both sides of the paper can be set according to the printing conditions.

In printing the adjustment image, the margin image portion is defined by comparing the document image size and the paper size, and it is determined whether or not there is an area for printing the adjustment image in the margin portion. If there is an area, printing is performed.
The adjustment image is stored in the storage unit in advance.

In this embodiment, it has been described that two image reading units are provided on the conveyance path, and each has a configuration capable of reading an image on another side of the paper. Alternatively, a reverse conveyance path may be provided so that the paper is reversed and the images on both sides of the paper are read by one image reading unit.
The

Next, real-time adjustment for adjusting image quality during job output will be described.
The
Hereinafter, an implementation procedure when performing real-time correction will be described.
When outputting a job for which real-time adjustment is set, patch image data such as gradation correction is prepared according to a command from the
The image data stored in the
FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a print area of an adjustment patch when performing real-time adjustment. In this example, it is assumed that the image I is printed on the paper S, and the area outside the area of the image I is finally cut.
Here, the area necessary as the final output product is the area of the center image I, and the areas other than the area of the image I are cut areas. Therefore, in real-time adjustment, patches are printed on all pages in an area that is not necessary after being cut by the cutting machine of the post-processing device, for example, patch area A in the figure, and a sensor mounted on the post-processing machine is used. Read the patch and make corrections.
When printing a patch, for example, YMCK and RGBPb (Pb = YMC overlapped black) gradation patches are divided into two sheets and printed repeatedly, and both patches are read to calculate a gradation correction value. In this example, two sheets are required for image quality adjustment. However, according to the present invention, the number of sheets necessary for adjustment and the image content of the patch are not limited to specific ones.
The adjustment image is not limited to a patch, and the shape of the image is not limited to a specific one as long as it can be used for adjustment.
For patches that are affected by the image on the back side during reading, such as patches for tone correction, printing is usually performed only on one side of the paper.
The printed patch is normally read by either the first
However, when determining the print position of the patch, it is necessary to specify in advance a region that is finally cut and becomes unnecessary, that is, a blank region outside the image forming region. Therefore, the image area of the document is compared with the paper size in advance, and the area outside the document area is specified. Thereafter, if there is an area for printing the gradation patch in the margin, printing is performed. If there is no area, printing is not performed.
However, in a double-sided printing job, since it is an odd page, if a blank page is automatically added before printing, the size of the original image cannot be acquired. Therefore, it is not possible to specify a margin area based on the size of the document image, and as a result, it is not possible to print a patch on a blank page.
Since the printing of the patch is performed on one side of the paper in consideration of the reverse of the paper, when the surface of the blank page is the printing surface of the patch, the number of printing surfaces of the patch is reduced. In real-time adjustment, it is desirable to read a patch as continuously as possible. If the number of times of reading decreases, the print quality of the output may be reduced.
Therefore, in the present embodiment, the surface on which the patch image is printed is determined based on whether the number of printed sheets of the job is an even number or an odd number, and whether the face-up discharge or the face-down discharge is performed.
This prevents a reduction in the number of printed pages of patches in the job. That is, for an odd-numbered page job, a patch image is printed on the paper discharge surface. The paper discharge surface indicates a surface on which the first page of the job is printed.
Note that “Face Up” is output so that one page of the printed material is facing upward, and “Face Down” is output so that one page of the printed material is facing downward.
In the present embodiment, when performing double-sided printing with the
Therefore, when output is performed face up, the pages are output in the order of the pages going back so that the top surface of the last output sheet is the first page.
When output is performed face down, output is performed in page order so that the lower surface of the first output sheet is the first page.
FIG. 4 is a diagram illustrating an example of a print surface of a patch at the time of face-down output. In this example, the number of pages of the job to be output is 5, and the print conditions are set so that face-down output is performed.
The first page is printed on the first side S1A of the first sheet, the second page is printed on the second side S1B, the third page is printed on the first side S2A of the second sheet, and the second page The fourth page is printed on the surface S2B. Further, since the fifth page is printed on the first side S3A of the third sheet and the job is an odd page, the second page S3B of the third sheet is automatically set as a blank page. It is a white image.
The paper discharge surface is the first surface S1A (side1) of the first sheet. Therefore, patches are printed on the first surfaces S1A, S2A, and S3A. This makes it possible to print patches on all sheets.
FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a printed surface of a patch at the time of face-up output.
In this example, printing is performed in the reverse page order as in face-down. Also in this case, since the job is an odd page, a blank page is inserted in the last page.
The last page is assigned to the first side S4A (side1) of the first sheet, and the fifth page is printed on the second side S4B (side2). On the second sheet, the fourth page is printed on the first side S5A (side1), and the third page is printed on the second side S5B (side2). On the third sheet, the second page is printed on the first side S6A (side1), and the first page is printed on the second side S6B (side2).
The sheet discharge surface is the second surface S6B (side2) of the third sheet. Therefore, patches are printed on the second surfaces S4B, S5B, and S6B. This makes it possible to print patches on all sheets.
Furthermore, even if a blank page is assigned to a page that is in the middle of printing due to chaptering or the like in job printing, the number of printed pages can be secured by the method for determining the printing surface of the adjustment image according to this embodiment. It becomes.
When chaptering is performed in a job and the chaptering position is an odd page, a blank page is automatically inserted on the back of the page before the chaptering. Since the blank page does not include information on the original image, the blank area cannot be determined, and the patch cannot be printed.
FIG. 6 shows a case where a job set to divide chapters between the third page and the fourth page is output face-down. Since the output is face-down, a patch is formed on the first surface (Side 1) of the paper. In this example, the fourth page after chapter division is the first page. For this reason, printing can be performed without reducing the number of print surfaces of the patch by printing the patch on the discharge surface.
Further, in the present embodiment, similarly, when performing collective printing, it is possible to determine the print surface so that the patch is printed on the paper discharge surface.
In addition, when outputting even page jobs, patches can be printed as many as the number of prints, regardless of which side is printed, but if there is a previous job, the patch print side of the previous job Patches can be printed on the same side.
By forming a patch on the same surface as the patch printing surface of the previous job, it is possible to use an image reading unit that reads the same side surface, and if the image reading unit is changed, there is an effect due to differences in device characteristics It is possible to avoid the occurrence and perform adjustment such as gradation correction with high accuracy. This will be specifically described below with reference to FIG.
In the example of FIG. 7, an even page job is output after an odd page job.
The first job (JOB1) has an odd number of pages (3 pages) and face down output, the second job (JOB2) has an even number of pages (4 pages) and face up output. is there.
Since JOB1 is an odd-numbered page with face-down output, a patch is printed on the first surface (Side1), which is a paper discharge surface. That is, patches are printed on the first surface S10A and the first surface S11A, which are the discharge surfaces of the first and second sheets.
Since JOB2 is a face-up output and is an even page, the number of printed patches does not change regardless of which side the patch is printed on. In the present embodiment, it is assumed that printing of a patch in JOB2 is performed in Side1 as in JOB1.

Whether or not the job is an even page is determined by starting the output of the job (step s1). If the job is an even page job (step s1, Yes), it is determined whether a previous job exists (step s2). If the previous job exists (step s2, Yes), it is determined whether the paper discharge surface of the previous job is face down (step s4). If the paper discharge surface of the previous job is face down (step s4, Yes), the print surface of the patch is set to Side1 (first surface) as in the previous job, and the patch is printed on the surface side of Side1 (step s7). Next, it is determined whether the job is finished (step s8).
If there is no previous job (No in step s2), the process proceeds to step s3 described later.
If the paper discharge side of the previous job is not face-down (step s4, No), the printing surface of the patch is set to Side2 (second side) as in the previous job, the patch is printed on the side of Side2 (step s6), and the next Then, it is determined whether the job is finished (step s8).
If it is determined in step s1 that the job is not an even page job (No in step s1), that is, if it is an odd page job, it is determined whether the set paper discharge surface is face down (step s3). If the paper discharge surface is face down (step s3, Yes), the patch printing surface is set to Side1 (first surface), the patch is printed on the side of Side1 (step s5), and then the job is completed. Determination is made (step s8).
In step s3, if the paper discharge surface is not face-down (step s3, No), the patch print surface is set to Side2 (second surface), the patch is printed on the side of Side2 (step s6), and then the job ends. (Step s8).
In step s8, it is determined whether all jobs are completed (step s8). If all jobs are not completed (step s8, No), the process returns to step s1, and the flow is repeated for the next job. If all jobs have been completed (step s8, Yes), the procedure ends. According to this embodiment, the number of printed real-time adjustment patches can be maximized.
